Official "second screen" thread

SUBRICK

This thread is to discuss (or ponder) what the second screen might be used for in the new upcoming DS releases diamond and pearl, both outside and inside battle. Discuss what you would like it to be used for.

Things to keep in mind:
Battle scenes
Main outside area
Contests
Pokedex

Close if inappropriate.

Based on the screenshots we have now, we can pretty much assume that the attacks and battle selections will be contained on the second screen.

In the overworld, I could see it being useful as a quick access provider to several useful tools, such as providing buttons for your bike and fishing rod, in addition to giving commands for any HMs that your Pokemon might know. Furthermore, it could prove useful if it provided a snippet of the region's map where you are located, giving a few squares out to each side, or otherwise providing an overview of the route on which you are.

One of the best uses I could see for it would be providing quick access to menu commands, such as certain items or a miniature Pokedex, which could give you some info on the Pokemon you are fighting while you are fighting it. However, you'll need to activate this feature through an in-game quest, much like you needed to acquire additional cards for your Pokegear to extend its functionality.

I like your overworld idea, but I'm not sure of your miniature pokedex one. What would be on the second screen before you do this in-game quest?

It would display the time and day of week in a fairly large portion of the screen, but after you complete this quest half of this area would be given to display the miniature Pokedex. It would give enough room to show the sprite, name, height, weight, and whether you have caught this Pokemon or not.

I liek that all-in-one idea, which brings me back to beliving that the Pokegear must be brought back!

But still, maybe if you encounter the pokemon for the first time, or if you want to choose, you can see it's info on-demand.

Like Eszett said,The Top screen will probably be used(In battle) to choose attacks and outside battle it could be a short cut to the bag, map, pokedex etc.

i thought of something but it most likely wont happen.

If you encouter a pokemon a pokedex on the top screen would appear and show data and stuff.
ex.
Wild BUIZERU appears *pokedex opens on top and some text appear and the footprint etc.*
oh yeah, the bottom is for the battle, but this probably won't happen.

No,no your ideas fine. It is kind of like the Pokedex sugestion mentioned before.

But I just came up with something! What if a kind of targeting thing was made with the touch screen?

How could anyone miss those giant pokemon sprites? Besides, that ruins the whole concept of accuracy and evasiveness.

Maybe the touch screen will show a region map, and when you have fly, you just have to touch where you want to go, as long as you've been there.

Maybe it will just remain unused.. If it doesn't serve a huge purpose, why add it just to add it? I'd prefer it this way... Maybe it's just me.

I don't see It being too big... maybe a menu out of battle, and you can switch to a map. In battle a menu to choose your action... I son't think it will be something big.
Meh-just my 2 cents

That can't happen because Nintendo has already said D/P will utilize ALL of the features of the DS.

For contests, it'll probably be similar, where you'll choose the moves to perform and it gives your general status. That is, most of the things that were on half of the screen before will all be on the bottom to touch and the top will be the entire field with the pokemon performing. Just IMO

WHERE IS PIDGEOT?!
yeah HM and key item shortcuts would be cool (youd have to assign them though). maybe, like, ranger, there'll be a small map (like a zoomed out overview of the town youre in) and a list of your party...? time/date/weather/money etc could be there too. badges...? in battle, it'll obviously used to show attacks and battle selections. when you select pokemon/items, you'll be able to view them on the bottom screen. i also think that whenever you use the menu (bag, pokemon, trainer card etc) the top screen will stay there, but the bottom screen will show you what you have selected.

Cheer up.
Just to confirm people, the shots we have seen so far are displayed on the top screen.

Maybe they will use the microphone to command HM's in the overworld map. That would be cool. And of course you could choose the style of previous games, in case you're deaf, or just don't like to shout "cut" in public.
