• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

I think they keep going with Rock for the same reason that they keep the Fire/Water/Grass trio: it's simple. For example, if they made a Rock/Flying/Fighting trio, not all kids who play the game would automatically know that Flying is Super-Effective against Fighting. It makes sense, it's just not that obvious.

Water putting out Fire, and Fire burning Grass is obvious. (Grass > Water may not be as obvious, but the point stands.)

Rock is obvious; it's something most kids either encounter daily (cement) or at least know about. They learn in school how over time, water can erode even the toughest of rocks, and they've seen that trees' roots can break concrete.

As much as I agree that it would be nice to have a new type as the first gym, I wouldn't be surprised if the 5th gen had us fighting a Rock Gym first.

He's got a pretty good point.

i think it's great that we have a "Classic" 1st gym. I'm going to use the 1st set of gyms as a example. Rock- Grass and Water both powerful, fire weak - Water- Grass Powerful water okayish, fire weak. Lightning- Fire and grass okayish , water weak. So fire is the hard one , as you have yet to train, it's some of the hardest. Water is normal, , grass is easy.

It makes it easier to play though, it's classic, and you shouldn't mess with it. I'm glad that rock is the 1st gym ^-^

At least we have someone who isnt against the rock gym being first. Its not hard to beat the first gym with the fire starter, just train it.

Are you sure that many kids (I mean 6 year olds or so) would know this assuming they've never even heard of Pokemon before (although the starters' trio is pretty easy to figure out)? I think most kids would find out about the advantages of Water and Grass over Rock from the Anime, but you have a point that it'd be harder for them to know something like Flying > Fighting, partly because even the Anime hasn't showcased it much.

I don't understand, first rock gym is never really a problem since you will always have an alternative back up from wild grass/water pokemon.

What I want them to do is try not to always use dragon type for elite 4.
Kinda redundant. Not that I ever had a problem facing dragon users.

Shocked!
They need to make it harder for people that use fire at first because it becomes much easier for them later in the game, also what about falkner! how could you forget bird boy!

i agree the rock type first gym is getting very repetative, but it also gives the game that pokemon feel to me, i mean if i walked in to my first gym and it was dragon type i would flip a lid, but with rock it gets you into the feel for the game with a sense of easiness to it, i kind of like the rock type first gym, but it does seem to be repetative yes

dark gym first this time ftw

After neglecting the dark type in gyms for four generations, they better not make it the weakest gym in the region. I want the eight leader to be dark-type, and super badass.

On-topic. . . Rock gyms make the fire starter harder to use, but there are other types that can do that without being repetitive. Or just make the fire starter less of a clear choice over the others.

^Yeah, they could have a Ground gym to do that. It'd be a change while still giving Grass (especially) and Water starters the usual advantage.

The only reason I would agree with making the 1st gym a different type is so that it would be more difficult, Rock is easy to beat, even with Fire is you train hard enough.

it might be a bit late to say this but whp cares... in johto the 1st gym leader is falkner with his flying types, so although most have been rock there not all.

Ok, I don't have time to read the WHOLE thread, but I'm just gonna say, "Go catch a Fighting type!" In Red/Blue/gen III remakes, Mankey is available right after you leave Viridian City. It's not hard to deal with. Sinnoh, even there, you can catch a Machop not too far above Oreburgh. Also, go into the mine, there are Geodudes you can train to learn Magnitude! Also, if you are bothered to level your HM slave, Bibarel learns Water Gun not too long after evolving.

Maybe they should just make the first gym Normal or Bug type.I don't see why not, they would be more interesting

On-topic. . . Rock gyms make the fire starter harder to use,

Not really. All the fire starters gain super effective moves against Rock types quite early. In R/S/E if you just evelove torchic at Lv 16, Combusken learns Double kick(fighting type), in FR/LF, Charmander gained Metal claw at Lv 13 while in D/P/Pt, Chimchar learns Mach punch as soon as you evolve it at Lv 14.

The only time i had a hard time beating the rock type gym with a fire type was in R/B where charmander had no super effective moves and you either needed to train it to a much higher level or train a different pokemon.

The only thing i could think of why the first gym is rock type, is similar to this.

Rock is obvious; it's something most kids either encounter daily (cement) or at least know about. They learn in school how over time, water can erode even the toughest of rocks, and they've seen that trees' roots can break concrete.

So it is all about little kids understanding the game, and GF will have to do so, because the little kids are giving them money the most.
