This may be a dumb question, but why did Ash's caterpie evolve so much sooner than May's wurmple? Ash's caterpie was fully evolved in two episodes, while it took a few episodes for May's wurmple to evolve. Why is this? Don't say that it's because May is less experienced than Ash. He's more experienced than her now, but way back when he caught caterpie he was just as, maybe more incompetent as May. So, what's the reason?

Easy, When Ash caught Caterpie it wasalready close to evolving

When May caught Wrumple it was less experienced, therefor took longer.

Hamstar

o snp.
What Psydaquil said o.o

I own the 5th gen
actually, Satoshi was able to catch Caterpie without even battling it, so I doubt it was closer to evolution than Haruka's Kemusso was (who needed to be battled before being caught).

I think the reason Satoshi's evolved so quickly was because when the anime first started out, it wasn't intended to be an extremely huge success that would run and promote pretty much every future game generation to come. It was intended for an 80ish episode run. As a result, events happened a lot quicker, especially near the beginning. Nowadays, though, they just bide their time for the release of the next generation of games. So, that more or less explains why it took Kemusso so long to evolve.

Actually if I remember the episode correctly, Dexter says "This perticular one evolved much sooner then others of this species".

So thats saying something like Ash's was special.

I don't remember anything of the sort being said in either of Caterpie's evolutions, to be honest. I recall Dexter saying something, but it was more talking about Caterpie's rapid evolution in general. (As in, all Caterpie.)

Really?

Fair enough, I just remember Ash being really excited about it at the time.

That may have been because it was his first pokemon evolution.

I think I do remember it saying that Caterpie/Metapod evolved quickly, not about his being special. Nowadays they seem to drag out evolving, to make room for fillers.

Ash's Pika Pal

some have to let go
Remember when Caterpie was talking to Pikachu, well it probably wanted to evolve more then Wurmple did. So, it probably evolved sooner because it wanted to get to the Buterfree stage a lot faster.

The real question is why Charmeleon evolved so fast.

I thought that was fairly obvious - Satoshi's Lizard forced itself to evolve into Lizardon so it could battle Ptera (Satoshi even mentions this in the episode, after he gets incinerated by his own Pokémon's attack).

SNEAK ATTACK
Does it really matter? Seriously, weirder things have happened in the way of evolution. Why haven't Bulbasaur and Squirtle evolved, despite battling tremendous amounts through the first 5 seasons?

Is that a rethorical question?
Bah, I'll try and answer, anyway.

They want to prove to others as well as themselves that they're strong opponents without having to evolve. It's a moral and honour thing.
Either that, or they think their evolutions suck.

Bulbasaur doesn't want to evolve. And Squirtle i guess it wants to prove it's better than Wartortle.

Pure

back.
Well, Bulbasaur didn't evolve because of the reason in 'Bulbasaur and the Mysterious Garden', and Squirtle didn't evolve because he returned to the SQUIRTLE squad.

As for Caterpie, if you've played all the games, you'll find (or I've found) that caterpie is easier to level up than Wurmple.

I subscribe to Yamato-san's theory as well.

I know that, I'm just saying pokemon can evolve fast in the anime with willpower alone.
