To be fair they did kind of touch on it a little bit in BW on what Pokémon Connisseur is, and it even had different rankings with S being the highest class/rank.
If I recall Cilan was a A class/rank Connissuer, so he could have strived towards getting to S class/rank and opening his own shop. However they unfortunately decided to prioritize his hobbies over what his goal would actually be.

Since people are giving their hopes for future opponents, I’ll give 1-3 per region
Lorelei, Lance, and Surge. Lorelei was the first E4 he fought against which was a pivotal part of his journey, Lance for Dragonite plus a battle of potentially Kanto’s strongest Trainers, and Surge just for the callback.
Casey and Janine. Casey because she’s one of the few characters from Johto that I remember and like. Janine since she’s the only Gym Leader pre Galar that hasn’t appeared yet
Steven & Brandon. Steven is someone who Ash has met twice and feels like he’d be a fun battle for him after seeing his brief match with Alain. Brandon for the chance for him to use all 6 Regis. Maybe vs the original 6 or Hoenn team?
Cynthia, Paul, & Palmer. The first two are obvious. Palmer so Torterra can get redemption and I feel like this is the best person. Flint is an honorable mention since Volkner and him have a fun dynamic.
Benga & Virgil. Benga could be Alder’s new prodigy apprentice after passing the Champion title to Iris. Virgil is mainly so him and Ash can actually have a match. Could also serve as a field trip for Chloe and Eevee.
Diantha for the Ash Greninja rematch. I don’t really have any other hopes but I guess Alain?
Youngster Tristan from the Title Defense in game. Don’t really know who else since Ash has had satisfactory battles with pretty much everyone in Alola but I’d take anyone
Mustard, Peony, and Kabu. Just personal preferences as those are my favorite characters from SwSh

Love these choices! Mine would probably be the same although I'd rather have Bruno instead of Lorelei coz I think he would make a more interesting opponent. I really hope we get to see Will and Karen too for Johto, Ash doesn't have to battle them, them being referenced as the new elite four is enough, maybe when Ash takes on Janine and she mentions her father Koga is an elite 4 member now
I would love to see all the other members too like the the three remaining hoenn members, the remaining unova members and Drasna, but I'm trying not to be too greedy

Honestly forgot about Bruno! I was rewatching a couple of OI episodes and I remember how cool “Prima” was. Bruno seems like a somewhat likely option given Bea’s obsession with fighting Fighting specialists. Also agree on showcasing characters like Karen, Grimsley, & Drasna. They deserve the Wilkstrom treatment. I’m honestly open to any character returning so I’ll even be hype for someone like Brock’s brother battling Ash lolLove these choices! At this point i just want a non dragon, fighting, or electric type user game character to be ash’s opponents. Because that’s apparently all he’s allowed to meet and fight for the most part.

I'm really hoping for some other type-experts. I'm starting to get a little tired of all the Fighting-experts...
(and yet I expect almost every Fighting expert to grace PM2019 at some point
)As weird as it sounds, I'd like see a Poison expert. Those guys just don't get enough love. (Heck, even Gamefreak doesn't seem to care because there have only been just, what, four or five in 25 years). An ever under-appreciated Bug or Flying expert sounds nice too.

I always hated whenever other Series never made every game character appear in their respective anime series. There should be a rule that all of them should appear made by the Executives from the Next Series and onwards. Considering how every series tends to do something the completely opposite of the one before it (XY in Ash being Competent unlike BW, SM in making the Series Comedy in opposed to Serious XY), I really hope the Next One makes it that all Game Characters in Gen 9 appear in the Gen 9 Anime opposed to the Current Series.
