I bought a used copy of X and found Pokémon on it back from 2000, how is this possible if the game wasn’t out back then?

what’s the oldest legal year for Pokémon you can find saved?

Well, the date of Pokémon caught depend of the 3DS' internal clock settings. I once had a friend who bought a used game of Pokémon White in 2012, and the starter was "met at 12/25/2010". The game wasn't even released yet, but the Serperior was perfectly legal as it went through Pokémon Bank. So that means the game's previous owner set the date to Christmas 2010 when he started his Pokémon White game even though it came out in Spring 2011. Hope I helped. :)
