Paranoia Agent

I bought the Box Set for this the other day, and have finished watching all of it. When I got to the end, I was a bit confused because there were certain thing that I did not understand. Has anyone else seen this series yet?

I saw it.

I hated the ending, they just made it odd for the sake of being odd.

Yea they didn't really finish it. The first time I saw this (i was 12) i was scared to death. After that I started watching it frequently. I thin theendsows tht Lil Slugger is back.

Maniwa, like the old man, found out that there was a repeating pattern in the equation, meaning that the same thing would happen again.

I've seen this show on Cartoon Network, and it confuses the crap out of me.

It's called Paranoia Agent, and the episodes I saw were of a lady, and of a kid who was being framed as Lil Slugger, while Lil Slugger terrorized em both in each episode >_>

If this show can cause paranoia, please warn me. I'm already crazy, but curious of how it goes

Well, I was looking about it on wikipedia, in the hopes of fginding some more answers, and it says that you will not really find then unless uoi know japanese folklow(sp?).

Also, there seemed like a couple of pointless episodes there, such as the one where the woman are telling stories, and the one where the 3 people want to die. They do not really add anything to the story.

If you're talking about pretentiousness, you're barking up the wrong anime tree. Try what Oshii did with some scenes Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence to make the movie more "intelligent" (ironically enough, Kon was a student of Oshii's, if I recall correctly).

Uh, what? Paranoia Agent is a completed series at thirteen episodes, and [adult swim] has aired them all certianly more than once. If you're thinking "incomplete" because they didn't tie up the ending with a nice little bow inside a box, then you're still wrong.

Maniwa, like the old man, found out that there was a repeating pattern in the equation, meaning that the same thing would happen again.

Things go in cycles and history tends to repeat itself, so it would make sense that a mass hysteria would break out again; happens all the times in "civilized" and "advanced" socites, so Kon's concept isn't far off, to say the least.

Paranoia Agent doesn't "cause" paranoia or try to have the viewer(s) go through a case of it while/after watching the show, it is simply a study and analysis of Japan's modern society (or any major power's society) and the overall alienation, distrust, manipulation, secrets, lies, etc. that its people creates.

I'd fully recommend if you are willing to try your hand at unconventional methods of storytelling, psychological representations and development that are thoughtful and even a bit satrical, episodic yet still connected study of characters, and probably one of the more memorable endings that anime has to offer. Personally I consider it to be one of Kon's two masterpieces, and while it isn't for everyone, I'd advise you to expand your horizons and general tastes by giving it a try.

Uh, there might be specific culture points in Paranoia Agent, but the gist of what Kon is trying to say in the anime can be understood by actually watching the anime and paying attention to detail. Not everything is clear-cut and spelled out for you considering that the audience of the series is expected to actually think to enjoy the story -- in my opinion that is what some of the better works of fiction do.

Also, there seemed like a couple of pointless episodes there, such as the one where the woman are telling stories, and the one where the 3 people want to die. They do not really add anything to the story.

Pointless? You might as well consider every single episode for Paranoia Agent except for its first two and final two episodes pointless considering that "the story doesn't truly progress" in most of them and are provided for introspection of its excellently handled characters. Each episode has its own meaning and does add up to the general whole of what is trying to be said to the audience.

The creator said himself that he wanted to make the ending as weird as he possibly could, and I didn't enjoy the oddity that was forcibly implemented into the ending.

Paranoia Agent wasn't something designed to fit the status quo of the majority of anime from the onset, so why should the finale be any different? If an ending fits what was being done with the rest of the story and it wasn't weakly contrived, then I don't really see what the problem would be other than "personal tastes," which I can understand and respect if not also disagree with.

Hey thanks Franky. Thats why Lil Sluggers shadow was there in the end.

EDIT: Also I remember at the end of most of the episodes the guy kept writing the equation over and over again.

Well, I think that I may need to watch th series again to see if I notice anything different. I guess that once I have watched it a couple of times I may understand it.

Oh, and Helkorn, the reason I said that they were pointless is because there was no mention of the Lil' Slugger police case, and none if the victims were really introduced like they were in the other episodes. Please PM me if you can explain it, but if it will spoil loads of things.

Nothing to be done
Having only seen the first four episodes when this show ran on Adult Swim, I must say, I loved what I saw. I greatly enjoy non-sequitter shows such as this. At times it seemed a little dark for me, yet I still loved it due to its strangeness. I seem to remember the opening and closing pieces being vagule disturbing, yet still very cool. It kills me that I didn't watch the series through to the end, although I've read summaries of how it finishes. I think I can say that Paranoia Agent and Fooly-Cooly are the best two anime I've seen on TV. I suppose I'll have to shell out for the box-set sometime soon.

Oh, the over-arching theme:
Something along the lines of inability to reconcile with one's own actions inducing a greater paranoia?

Developement of themes, man, developement of themes.
