Photoshop-Masking!

I have tried to search on google on how to creat maskings on photoshop, but every time i search i get hard tutorials that i dont get! i need a simple begginers tutorial i don't get the masking thing at all! In every tut. that i want to follow for either, manupulating, or just editing photos most require a masking system step which i can't do! so please can someone help me out on masking!

Depending on what you want to do, you could just set aside areas using channels or layers. My version of photoshop doesn't a nice channels set up, so I'll explain with layers:

On a new layer, draw over the area you want to mask. using the magic wand tool, select this area. Now go to Select => Inverse. (Or Right Click, then Select Inverse) Hide this layer.

Now go back to the layer with your image on it. You should be able to just manipulate the selected area. When you're done with the selection, Deselect it so that you can work on the whole image again.
