I was battling and pidgeotto grew to level 36, but after the battle it didn't evolve. Is this a glitch or was it the fact that it fainted?

Maybe it was holding an Everstone. Don't know about the fainting part, though.

It's because it had fainted,pokemon need to be alive at the end of the match to evolve
