• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

When I'm hyped for a game, I can power through it really fast.

No, least I don't think it does. But I know Mismagius can learn Mystical Fire.

I thought you meant Pachirisu using a Fire-type move. I was shocked. xD

Just looked at my Platinum team on my save file and god it's the most basic team ever with Infernape, Gastrodon, Staraptor, Luxray, Bronzong. Also for some reason Carnivine. Going to try for a less obvious team than this when I play Brilliant Diamond. Might as well add Abomasnow to fit the totally basic theme

BDSP has finally convinced my to stop lurking and actually post, haha. I’ve been giving my teams a lot of thought- I tend to like to stick to Pokémon from that generation, at least for my first run through each game, so I think I’ve finally decided on:

Brilliant Diamond
  1. Torterra (my original starter in Diamond and I still love it very much)
  2. Luxray
  3. Drifblim
  4. Lucario
  5. Drapion
  6. Manaphy (alternatively Floatzel, probably, if I decide Manaphy is too much work)
Shining Pearl
  1. Infernape
  2. West Sea Gastrodon
  3. Mismagius
  4. Bronzong
  5. Abomasnow
  6. Togekiss
I’d really like to use a Lopunny at some point, too, but it may end up just being filler for one of my parties until I get more of my planned members!

How's Abomasnow a basic choice?!? It's literally one of those picks that often hurts your team more then benefits it. I mean I hate self-inflicted hail damage.

I've been watching this thread and Abomasnow doesn't get picked a lot. Same for Gastrodon and Bronzong as well either.. Rare picks.

Do people not understand the benefits of Hail that you can hit Blizzard 100% when in Hail? Abomasnow basically shuts down half of Cynthia's team by itself. It's probably the best ice pokemon in the game. Also if Megas are actually in the game it will be even more devastating. Also Gastrodon and Bronzong are incredible defensive pokemon and love their fun stall.

Three things to consider:

1. Abomasnow is SLOW.
2. Has no singular exceptional stat.
3. It has weaknesses to Fire, Fighting, Steel, Bug, Poison, Flying and Rock.
Bonus: Weavile, Mamoswine, Froslass, Glaceon. Heck, I'd sooner consider FrostRotom.

Garchomp outspeeds Abomasnow. Hits 1 Flamethrower. Abomasnow is dead.

Cynthia leads with Spiritomb. Do you start with Abomasnow? It has Silver Wind to hit you relativaly hard. Lets say you beat it. What do you think Cynthia will throw at you? Big odds are it's Lucario. AuraSphere. Abomasnow doesn't win this match-up. You faint or switch. Eitherway, you're switchin will take damage from your OWN SnowWarning. Heck, even Garchomp Pt-moveset has Flamethrower and DP moveset has BrickBreak.. 100% Blizzard is nice, but you get wrecked before you get to use it against Cynthia. You might get away with it against Bertha though..

Not even lieing, but every one of Cynthia's DPt-teams has a super effective move against Abomasnow.

Literally focus sash Abomasnow and Garchomp is literally one shot by Blizzard, and that's the main reason for using him. Also you could bring a Bronzong to do Trick Room and Aboma outspeeds Togekiss and Garchomp which are the main reasons why to bring him. It doesn't need to go 6-0, I'm not planning to put him on the team for that. It still is good at wiping a good chunk of the Elite Four

My team: Empoleon, Luxray, Mamoswine, Tropius, Blissey, Azelf
My prefered team: Empoleon, Luxray, Mamoswine, Azelf, Shaymin-Sky, Darkrai
I will use Shaymin and Darkrai if they are allowed to be transferred from Home or if they have post game events available to catch them.

There's literally ONE Focus Sash you can get before the Pokémon League. But I guess you can get it and use it for this single battle. Considering the scarceness I often don't bother using it as it's not a replicable strategy at that point in the game. But I guess if you really want to use an Abomasnow then you have to make it work somehow.

But at that point you could also just use a Lvl17 Starly to get the exact same result.

But fair play on the TrickRoom Bronzong set-up. I'm still not sure how you'd get Abomasnow in (if this one is not carrying a Sash) without potentially having to sack Bronzong.

Also, which pokémon are you setting up against? Spiritomb? Because depending on your IV/Ev's you've gotten throughout the playthrough, there's a decent chance that it will outspeed both Bronzong and Abomasnow under TrickRoom. Likely meaning that Abomasnow's Sash would be broken regardless in this situation.

Tangent:

I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible to get through Cynthia's team with just Starly's with a combination of Double Team, WhirlWind, Endeavor and Quick Attack (Lvl21 regular learnset). I mean she starts with Spiritomb. That's such a slow sucker and with some EV-training in Speed, there might be a chance that it can get a Double Team off before Spiritomb gets to move. With incredible luck, you can get off enough Double Team's. You'd still need something for the Spiritomb though. Does Final Gambit effect Ghost-types?

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m using an Abomasnow in my planned Shining Pearl team mostly because I like its design? I like its typing, too, despite the weaknesses, and it doesn’t have the worst move pool. I’ve used a Froslass and a Mamoswine before and I’m looking to try something different even though I really like them (and I have a Weavile in a planned Empoleon file iirc). And I know it’s not optimal or anything, but you could also equip the Quick Claw to it, if you’re that worried about its speed stat. It’s not the most reliable but I’ve had decent luck with it in my Platinum replay with my Luxray.

If you wanna use your favorite designs then that's absolutely a great reason to use whatever you please. Don't let anybody stop you.

The discussion about Abomasnow started because Julia called it a good fit for a 'totally basic'-themed team. If you look through this thread, it honestly isn't a basic pick. The most basic picks would be a team consisting of: Infernape, Staraptor, Luxray, Roserade, Floatzel and Garchomp, with a spice of Lucario thrown in.

I'm honestly going to not do what I normally do (which is sink my teeth in a game and never replay it - unless I get it on an emulator years down the line). I'm just gonna do a run with the squad that I picked (and a few benchwarmers). Once that's done, I'll transfer them to Home (if possible) and do a Nuzlocke-run. I might switch up the order though if Home doesn't become accesable for a while (I want the planned team on Home at least, Nuzlocke-squads are deletable in my eyes - even if succesful).

I'm still trying to figure out my reserves for my Brilliant Diamond team, but if I can't think of anything before we get Home connectivity I'll most likely include my Hariyama from Pokemon Go & my Teddiursa from Crystal that I've been waiting to use for a while.

I used doubles of them in my recent Pokemon Y playthrough (Teddiursa actually worked as a special tank on my team), but it'd be nice to have the actual pokemon as backup this time,

Right now playing Gold with my Jumpluff and love it's awesome status effects with Poison Powder and Leech Seed. I think it got Strength Sap last gen and along with Bullet Seed it's going to be really fun to use. Want to definitely use it and also Medicham

Wait, what's so good about BulletSeed Jumpluff? It's got a 55 Base Attack stat?

Now that HMs are not tied to the Pokémon on your team there is a bit more freedom in putting together a team, particularly as it looks like we are using Platinum’s roster (Gallade was used by Lucas in the Tag Battle with Riley in the recent trailer). Team now looks to be:

Infernape

Staraptor

Manaphy (from the Manaphy egg distribution)

Luxray

Hipowdon/Garchomp/Gastrodon

Gardevoir/Roserade

So replaying Diamond and wow I forgot how great Medicham was missed my powerful yoga boy, who I used so much in gen 6. Also having a lot of success with my Flash Fire Ponyta so probably will use that even if we don't get Galarian Rapidash. And honestly impressed with my Super Luck Murkrow so maybe going with Honchkrow, though it's defenses aren't great

Now that we know HMs have been revamped, I can freely design my team how I wish:

First Choice
1. Roserade
2. Drifblim
3. Dusknoir
4. Froslass
5. Umbreon
6. Spiritomb

Second Choice (if above are not all available pre-Elite Four)
1. Roserade
2. Drifblim
3. Gengar
4. Umbreon
5. Steelix
6. Spiritomb

Preliminaries
1. Empoleon
2. Ninetales
3. Snorlax
4. Mamoswine
5. Altaria
6. Milotic
7. Bronzong

No matter what, I WILL obtain Spiritomb before I take on the Elite Four. I don't care how long it takes or what irritating methods I have to endure. Preferably, I'd like to have it before the 4th gym.

It seems quite clear that we'll be able to use the PlatinumDex..

However, a core member from my planned team is Togekiss. Using that one basically hinges on when/where we are able to get a Togepi. In Platinum you got the Togepi Egg from Cynthia at Eterna City, which is going to be ideal for my playthrough since my team would only have two to three members at that stage.

So.. I don't know what to do if Togepi is only able to be gotten in the area it was available in D/P, which is PostGame. Now I've only recently finished Sword and have just begun Isle of Armor.. But.. GameFreak apparently likes not giving you Fairy-types in WildAreas.. So if that's taken into account I can see them witholding you access to Togekiss until the PostGame. In which case I think I'd need to get a replacement.

My planned team is still the following:
- Empoleon: Starter
- Lopunny: Eterna Forest
- Togekiss: Eterna City
- Skuntank: Route 206
- Carnivine: GreatMarsh
- Froslass: Acuity LakeFront

I don't like to double up on types, so when looking for a replacement I'm pretty much looking for a Gen4 Pokémon of the Bug, Dragon, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Ground, Psychic or Rock-types.

Here's the list of available pokémon:
- Infernape: I'm starting with Piplup, so not an option.
- Kricketune: I vastly prefer dual-types and would've loved it if Technician wasn't an HA.
- Luxray: Overused it in Sinnoh.
- Rampardos: Honestly don't remember using a fossil much in Sinnoh, it's definitely on the bench.
- Wormadam-Sandy: I'm actually feeling this one.
- Vespiquen: I'd rather use Wormadam, considering the rate of getting a female Combee..
- Pachirisu: I don't want to go full 'Dawn'..
- Garchomp: Not happening.
- Hippowdon: I don't use it often, but Sandstream doesn't offer any synergy on my team.
- Rhyperior: I don't tend to use trade evolutions unless I can catch them as is.
- Electivire: See above.
- Magmortar: See above.
- Yanmega: It's a good pick, but I think I still like Wormadam better as a Bug-type.
- Gliscor: Honestly one of my favorite pokémon and best synergizer with Empoleon on paper. But I used it too often.. So I'm not going to use it here.
- Gallade: Carried me during a Fighting-type run, not going to use it.
- Rotom-H: Actually one of the frontrunners as a replacement in my eyes. :)

So, if I had to make a shortlist:
- Rampardos
- Wormadam-S/Yanmega
- Rotom-H: Actually an 'if' with regards to when you can access Rotom and the ability to change its forms.

Honestly, I think I'd drop Yanmega because as a Flying-type it will overlap with the eventual Togekiss and I see Carnivine as my GreatMarsh encounter.

So it's either Wormadam, Rampardos or Rotom-H. Probably going to be Wormadam. Cranidos/Rampardos is going to be a tough sell against Gardenia, Maylene, Wake and Byron..

I'm actually wondering in the trailer we do see that we can get a Houndoom in the Grand Underground. So what fire Pokemon would be better Rapidash or Houndoom?

I'm definitely going to try to play the main story without a single Fairy-type on my team, because I don't want to risk Cynthia being easy.

I don't know if ILCA and Masuda have accommodated for the type, so I'm not taking any chances. I intend for my battle against Cynthia to be a memorable one.
