Are you purposely ignoring the moments where Serena shows her fragility and how spoilt she was (The road to Santalune and staying in the forest) her indecisiveness (When asked by Clemont why she left home), her attempts to find her goal and trying various activities (Baking, Grooming etc) being sad at not having a purpose on her journey (The time when she says 'It must be nice to have something you are so passionate about' or something along that line), Aria's introduction, the summer camp etc. Or are you just not remembering things correctly.
It's one thing to misremembered things, it's another to make blanket statements like someone is handled better without any reason when the someone has her first two focus episodes wasted thanks to the marketable Eevee. How is Koharu treated 'better', because she doesn't appear every episode ? If so, then every pokegirl is handled worse because none of them (except for Misty afyer the league) did anything during the leagues or many gym badges. Most of them they appeared in.
It's unfathomably stupid to expect every character to do something notable every episode. They aren't a single protagonist. They have to share screentime. If Koharu's merit lies in not appearing every episode, then you're just comparing apples and episodes by having Koharu already put in an advantageous situation of not having to put in work every episode. Then effectively ignoring Serena's character moments.
If Serena were to have all 47 episodes to herself, someone would have been complaining about other characters getting shafted. Completely missing the point that there are parts of a story where each characters gets focus. It was Clemont's time, but the fact remains that Serena still got major moments in a time where she wasn't even the major part.
-----------------
Extending to every character, it's stupid to ask them to do something every single episode and call it bad handling when they don't get focus in someone else's episode. Calling Ash useless because he does nothing in the Grand Festival is stupid. Calling May useless for not doing anything in Ash and Brandon's match is stupid. Calling Dawn useless because she wasn't bringing up her own troubles during Ash vs Paul is stupid. Are 'forefront' and 'limelight' such foreign words to you that some other character getting focus must mean that the character being discussed is entirely useless and worthless ?
If yes, then Ash is useless because he didn't snatch Braixen's pokeball from Serena and performed at the master class.
That's a bad faith argument. I never said that Serena was useless. I'm just saying that she didn't really feel like she was treated as a main character UNTIL the episode she cut her hair. My biggest gripe with her development as I've stated before was that they took far too long to establish a goal for her and then by the time XYZ came along, they rushed it terribly.
Serena started to interact with the group in episode 5 and formally joined in episode 7. It took all the way until episode 39 for her to have her first trainer battle. Now, many characters have had non-battling goals before and since then, but never has it taken that long for a first non-TR battle. Also, before that, Korrina was introduced and immediately had a 5 episode arc dedicated to her and her development. I recall around that time, people started to get annoyed that Serena was NOT doing much of anything since her debut.
Then the Summer Camp Arc happened epsidoes 39-42 which
finally set up Serena's goal of entering a Showcase. After this, she did catch Pancham and raced her mom. HOWEVER. It took 17 whole episodes for her to FINALLY enter a Showcase. That was 59 episodes of build up and which she had about 7 episodes or so of focus. She did things like Rhyhorn Racing, PokéVision, and baking PokéPuffs as separate activities which could have been weaved into a more cohesive training regimen to be a Performer earlier on instead of being things that she tried that happened to be used in Showcases. Especially the Rhyhorn herding for the third Princess key win... like what was even that? Serena just gives off Rhyhorn pheromones?
Sorry that got long.
That's why I made that original state of how I like how they are handling Chloe's development better than how they handled Serena. I know the nature of both series is different, where Kalos was a traveling series and Journeys is a stationary series in terms of having a hub location. I just feel like if the writers intend of having a character that will take their time in feeling like a main character, it's best handled like they are doing so now. Chloe appears every now and then but usually when she does now, it does add to her character growth. Also, with her not appearing in every single episode, it doesn't feel like she's just there just cause.
I had similar issues with Lillie in SM. Even there she had to share the spotlight with the 5 other kids, that even at points Lana seemed like the "main" Pokégirl of the series. Mallow.
You don't have to agree with me but that's just the way I see it.
Since I'm already talking about the girls. This is how I would classify them in terms of their goals.
Type Specialist: Misty, Iris, Lana
Coordinator: May, Dawn
Performer: Serena
Uhhh: Lillie, Chloe (May and Serena, formerly)
Chef: Mallow
(I feel confident in putting Lana as type specialist as she loves the sea and water Pokémon. Misty had Togepi and Iris had Excadrill and Emolga. Sandy doesn't count against her)
