Shipping has existed before Serena and after her. All audience generated.

As for Serena, yes it was the writers. But I have a more complicated position on it. Maybe they did it for purpose of story telling. But audience has morphed it into an obsession, plethora of fanfics and pointless debates.

Are you new to shipping? Fanfics and fanarts are a standard phenomenon. It happens in literally every fandom ever, not just pokemon. Obsessing over headcanons like pokeshipping, advanceshipping, pearlshipping etc is weird and borderline delusional but when it's the writers shipping them the audience has every right to do the same.
