I think the Oinkologne episode was just the first full-on filler ep that had nothing tying it to the main plot.

I don't know...it introduces Qauxly's dancing, which becomes a BIG part of his character.

Unpopular opinion but I honestly feel the second arc was just as strong as the first arc writing wise. Sure it had more “filler” but filler doesn’t really exist in the pokemon anime and all those fillers were full of personality and fun. The character writing was also really strong and the strength progression was gradual and made sense. Plus the climax of the second arc was so fun to watch

Would episodes that are filler but have an important thing happen at the end count?

Yeah, save for some episodes in arc 2, every episode I think of as filler, manages to throw a random piece of important information at the VERY end that technically makes it not filler

Actually the episode before that with Friede and Pikachu was the first filler. At least the Oinkologne episode confirmed the gender of a couple of the mons lol.

The next filler was in the next arc that weird flower piller episode.

Most importantly, that episode marked the last time we had a conflict between Liko and her cat. Meowscarada still gets jealous from time to time, but it's simply treated as a funny quirk/gag now rather than something serious, which is much appreciated.

I still remember how Liko was utterly left in the dark about Floragato's anger towards her giving attention to other Pokemon (that cat had close contact with the writers, it seems) that everything got solved when she just gave the cat some attention and Floragato understood where she came from, and yet Liko still ended things without finding out why so to her it was another Tuesday.

They'll pull a Yu-Gi-Oh GX and have Ash fight Lik-

...And the worst part is it'll be a tie so it'll be a waste.

Never been a fan of that gag as it felt like them pushing the whole “being different from Ash’s Pikachu” thing to the limit. Like, we get it, Cap’s whole thing is being cool but it’s still a Pikachu who is a species popular fir being cute.

I do think it’s a really cute gag though and funny in a meta sense
I really appreciate how well they wrote Cap, I remember thinking about when Ash was leaving that I’d really miss Pikachu because any other would feel inferior to him, so I was really glad to be proven wrong coz they did a PHENOMENAL job of writing Cap and differentiating him enough from literally every other Pikachu we have ever seen

Seems like it's less a gag but more like "hey, this little thing is a thing" thing.

Feels like they didn't really exploit that enough to be much of a gag, probably because they didn't want Cap to look embarrassing.

Actually, it’s a Japanese trope (I already saw it in a 2013 Anime) I despise will all of my heart (doing a brand new character based, at least design-wise, on an already existing popular character of the series/franchise but having a personality that’s more or less the exact opposite of said character’s).

Four I think.

First was the Bramblin episode then again for the first Mega Voltage episode (some students who set him off sneezing) then in the first Mega Evolution special (two girls who say he's cute) and then the first Blueberry Academy episode (Lacey).
