Kiawe has massive potential to be the best male companion Ash ever has. That nonsense, almost leaderlike quality he has will make him a great male role model I feel Ash has severely lacked. Brock was his homeboy for 4 regions, but he felt like a sidekick ultimately. Clemont was cool. Liked how he helped Ash in understanding Ash-Greninja, but again, just a sidekick as well. I have high hoqes for Kiawe, his straight man act can also double for some really funny scenarios as well.
I agree. What adds to his potential is the fact that, unlike Brock, Cilan, and Clemont, Kiawe isn't choosing to follow Ash; he is stuck with Ash as his new classmate, whether he likes the kid or not.
Anyway, I'm still liking the series more and more, but I'm still a little concerned about the whole "Ash going to school" thing. The concept fits with Gen VII as a whole, but I still can't see how Ash is going to be able to do the trials, explore the Alola region, & build a team if he's stuck in school all the time, especially since the previous seasons mention on how Ash is terrible at school and the sometimes letting real life experiences be your teacher works a lot better
Maybe Ash won't be in school for the entire series, but only for the first story arc - the story arc that corresponds to the Trainer school from the games. Maybe Ilima is the "final test": students have to pass his Trial in order to graduate and become Trial Captains themselves. Mallow, Lana, Kiawe, and Sophocles all successfully pass Ilima's Trial and graduate, but our beloved idiot hero fails to graduate with his classmates.
As for the Z-Moves, the dance before it look necessary, so I can see Kiawe teaching Ash how to do those dances. I can also see Ash fail and have it literally blow up in his face.
Bonus points if Ash still has three left feet when he dances and Kiawe, being a dance specialist, is utterly frustrated with the kid's lack of coordination. ("How can someone be this bad at dancing?") Gold stars if Pikachu gets the dance right off the bat and shows off more of that expressive animation by making hilarious faces of exasperation at his Trainer's ineptitude.
Don't forget the fact that Meowth may also try to be his own trainer too
Ah, yes, how could I forget that? I can see it now... While Jessie and James are arguing over who gets to wear the Z-Ring, Meowth proclaims that
neither of them are good enough to be his Trainer, takes the Z-Ring, and attempts to use it himself...only to discover that it's hard to synchronize solo. And he will discover this fact in a battle against Pikachu and Ash and their perfected Catastropika.
