"So, do you want to go swimming or fishing or what?" Tambry asked idly. There was a small hut further down the beach with rental equipment like breathing apparatuses and goggles to fishing poles and small kayaks for those who didn't have a Pokemon that knew surf.

"Or maybe we could battle or sit and talk or something," she added as an after thought. She wasn't really sure what to do. If it had just been her at the beach she would have gone straight into the water, but now that she had to think about what Jake might want it made things a little harder. Was he the kind of guy that liked swimming? Or did he prefer the more peaceful sport of fishing (or as peaceful as it can get without having a Gyarados chomp down on the end of your line)?

Out in the water, Tambry could just make out a school of Horsea led by a Seadra. A Goldeen flipped out of the water closely followed by the tall blue humps of a passing Gyarados. A Starmie was sprawled on the sand a few feet down the beach and Tambry thought she saw the head of an Octillery poke out of the water for a moment. It was a great day to catch Pokemon if they wanted to fish, she mused.

Pokemon: Torchic.

The battle had started with Marion calling an ember while "Dodge each one, Mudkip," Alex followed with Mudkip dodging easily all of Torchic's Embers but Marion called out a counter attack of scratch which caused Torchic's claws to glow as it attacked with force as it landed the hit she and her Torchic needed. She saw Alex looking at the timer and the points and Marion turned the other way looking at the cheering crowd. She gulped "Oh no" she thought scanning the crowd, she had let the occasion get to her easily. "What to do" she thought while she quickly glanced at the timer before focusing on the battle at hand. "What to do" she asked herself again as Alex was about to call out an attack.

"Mudkip, stay close and launch a Water Gun directly at it," Alex ordered as Mudkip squirted out a high-pressured jet of water straight at Torchic. "What to do" she thought but then it hit her, she couldn't think on her feet, Marion had in fact let nerves take over her without any fight "Umm I don't know what to do" she thought trying to think until she thought of something "Torchic use scratch" she ordered as she didn't realise what she was getting her Pokemon into. "No wait don't...oh no" Marion yelled but it was too late as Torchic with its gleaming claws was about to attack until it got hit dead on by the water gun of Mudkip. Marion choked, she lost the battle not only to Alex but to herself, she knew that it was over as Torchic fell to the ground "Its over" she muttered with a hint of sadness in her voice as she returned Torchic.

She went up to Alex and congratulated him with her holding her tears in that were swelling her eyes. "You did great, sorry I couldn't be better but you deserve to win so good job" Marion said as she let out a sigh afterwards. She had to stay on stage waiting for the presentation as Alex was given the ribbon showing his victory as Marion got a little cheap small trophy for second place, the crowd cheered for her as she waved to them even though she was smiling the hint of disappointed was on her face, she clapped for Alex. After the presentation Marion walked off and placed a towel over her head as she started to cry after getting thrashed in the final, sitting by herself she was just there crying thinking about the loss and why she lost badly.

Alec wanted to go outside and enjoy the beautiful day that it was, go to the beach, read, shop, all the stuff he loved.

Piplup didn't have the same idea.

And so Alec was in the Contest hall, back in his normal clothes, watching the final, it was pretty close, and though in the end, Marion had lost the battle, and Alec felt sorry, but he congratulated the winner, Alex, and headed for the entrance.

He then noticed something strange. Piplup wasn't with him, he then proceeded to search the building, she wasn't on stage, or at reception, or in the toilets, he then tried the changing rooms. She wasn't there either.

He then heard something on the girl's side. Someone was crying. He headed over and saw Piplup next to the girl: it was Marion. She was the one who was crying.

"Marion, are you allright?" Alec asked her sympathetically.

"So, do you want to go swimming or fishing or what?" Tambry asked him, she appeared to be pretty calm and content by the sea. Jake noticed her looking towards a hut and he kind of guessed what she wanted to do but before he spoke, she was speaking again. Which only made it easier for him.

"Or maybe we could battle or sit and talk or something," Jake listened to her carefully and thought of a plan of action with which to occupy. As much as he hated the sand, swimming was always an attractive thing and he didn't mind it. Having made up his mind he looked at Tambry and spoke up.

"Swimming sounds good, we gonna head over to the hut, or just head in?" He asked giving Tambry another one of his half smiles. He was ready to set his back down and start getting undressed if they did go straight in, but it was all down to Tambry.

Mudkip

Alex nodded as Marion congratulated her; she was on the verge of crying, and she even fled the stadium after Alex was awarded his ribbon, but he was so excited at this point he honestly didn't care much. With a wide grin on his face, he took one last bow and left, letting Mudkip out of his Pokeball. "Wait here," he started, setting Mudkip on a bench. "I need to go change." Rushing to the changing rooms, he grabbed his bag and changed back into his street clothes, walking out into the main lobby and signing a few autographs with the green pen he carried with him everywhere.

"Thank you all for supporting me," he declared to the group of about eight people that began to flock towards the door, getting ready to have their lunch. Checking the clock, Alex realized it was barely two in the afternoon. He met up with Matt and asked, "You wanna go get some lunch? It's still pretty early. We can plan for where to head next, too." Mudkip hopped onto his trainer's shoulder as they checked their PokeItem's map of Cherrygrove, searching for any nearby restaurants. "My treat," Alex said smugly, offering to pay with a portion of his prize money from the contest.

Heading out of the Contest Hall, Alex stared up at the sun, high in the sky now. His face spread back into a grin; he couldn't stop smiling. He had his first ribbon! Just two to go, and soon he'd be dominating the Grand Festival. He stopped walking, momentarily, and began to fantasize. He couldn't travel through Johto with just Mudkip; he began to wonder what Pokemon he'd encounter on the next path. He turned to Matt and asked if he planned on catching any Pokemon soon, and if he was, what did he plan on?

With War by his side, Nihill studied the route leading out of Cherrygrove and into Violet City. His finger prodded various buttons on his PokeItem, researching the quickest way as much as possible. War intently studied the pictures of various Pokemon native to the route, hoping to find a friend in one of them. This was something Nihill noticed.

"Don't get your hopes up," the emotionless trainer admonished. "I have no plans to capture any of those Pokemon."

"Char?!" War cried in shock. Why was this? Did he only want War?

"That does not mean I don't want to capture any Pokemon at all," Nihill said, as if reading War's mind. "No Pokemon on that route interests me in the least. I desire Pokemon who fit the many ways that this world shall destroy itself."

Now War was both interested and disturbed. On one hand, it wanted to know what kind of Pokemon Nihill wanted to capture, as the young Charmander wished for more friends. On the other hand, Nihill's belief that the world would destroy itself was unsettling, to say the least.

The strange trainer set his PokeItem down beside him on the bed as he began to speak again.

"War," said Nihill. "Death. Strife. Fury. Famine. Pestilence. This planet's inhabitants cause all of these things, and thus they are the ways that this world will destroy itself. I only wish to find Pokemon that fit those traits in some way or another."

War recognized its name in Nihill's words. As Nihill retrieved his PokeItem, the Charmander began to think again. War? Why was it named that? It knew that some Pokemon could evolve into one or more forms...perhaps it was named for its evolutions?

And what of the others? Death? Fury? Pestilence? What did they have to do with the world's self-destruction? And why did Nihill only want Pokemon who fit such descriptions? As its mind drifted, War was quickly snapped back to reality by its trainer's empty voice.

"If we leave soon, we can make it to Violet City before long," Nihill said.

"Char," War nodded.

"Come," Nihill said, rising from the bed. "We leave immediately."

He pointed his Pokeball at War and recalled the small Fire-type. Nihill then left his bedroom and entered the lobby of the Pokemon Center.

"I'm leaving," Nihill said to the Nurse Joy without so much as a glance. Due to this, it took a second or two before she realized he was talking to her.

"Oh, all right," Nurse Joy said. "Thank you for staying with--"

Nihill was out the door before she finished, leaving the nurse dumbstruck. As he walked away from the Pokemon Center, he glanced briefly at the Contest Hall, as if expecting Alec to emerge from it at any moment. He then glanced the other way, towards Bulbasaur and Turtwig's trainers, who were still on the beach. Somehow, Nihill knew that the Sinnoh-born trainer would follow him, and if Bulbasaur's trainer was traveling with him, she would as well.

Two trainers and one coordinator...they were major inconveniences. In truth, he cared not whether they decided to follow him or simply ignore him. All the same, the memory of Turtwig's trainer's arrogant attitude still plagued Nihill's mind.

"Fool," Nihill muttered, regardless of whether or not the Turtwig trainer would hear him.

Without another word, Nihill began his trek onward towards Violet City. He had no intention of waiting for Alec, and if Piplup's trainer decided to try and follow him again, so be it. It mattered nothing to him.

Matt congratulated Alex on a job well done in the Contest. He was pretty surprised Alex won his first Contest, but, then again, this Contest had beginners, so everyone was on the same playing field. Once Alex was done getting changed and the two checked out of the Pokemon Center, they began to head out to their next destination: Violet City. Just like how Alex got his First Ribbon, it would be great if Matt got his First Gym Badge, because they'd be on a roll.

When they exited the Pokemon Center and walked towards the Route leading to Violet City, Alex had asked him what types of Pokemon he planned on capturing. He thought of that for a few seconds, then came up with an answer.

"I don't know. There's a lot of cool Pokemon out there, but it's hard to pick any kind. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens." He replied. After answering, he could feel his PokeItem buzzing from its pouch. He quickly grabbed it and saw that he got a Video Message from Prof. Elm. It showed his face, but it seemed kind of blurred out. Alex also grabbed his PokeItem and saw the same image.

Prof. Elm said, "H-h... help!! We're under.... a-a-attac-----" Then, the screen goes blank. Obviously, they knew that meant attack, so they rushed to back to New Bark Town, and saw a helicopter in Cherrgrove.

The person exiting was obviously one of Prof. Elm's assistants, so the boys went on the helicopter. Did everyone else get that?

Alec waited for Marion to answer him, but he supposed she was to sad to notice, so he withdrew Piplup and headed out. As soon as he got out, he heard an unfamiliar buzz in his backpack. He searched for it and found his PokéItem ringing like a madman: It was Prof Elm. He made a Video Call.

"H-h... help!! We're under.... a-a-attac-----" The image of the proffesor dissapeared, and Alec raced towards New Bark town. A helicopter had landed in the city, and Alec saw people he recognized get into it. He immeadiately ran towards it and hopped in. He recognized Matt, the boy who beat Marion in the finals.

"Hey", he said, a bit out of breath, "congratulations."

As Marion continued to cry due to her being utterly thrashed in the final without any fight. She heard someone walking it was Alec's Piplup, Marion stared at the Pokemon for a few seconds and then continued to bawl out tears with her face being covered by a white towel. "Marion, are you alright?" said a voice which was Alec, probably looking for his Piplup. Marion looked up at him and started to cry yet again which had been going on for quite a while due to the emotional rush that she was going through.

Marion didn't answer back properly but mustered a few words. "No...not...thrashed...nerves...stupidity...me" all interrupted by the tears that she had due to her crying again and again with really no sight to the end of the tears. Which was the cue for Alec to leave with his Pokemon while Marion still crying for what seemed to be 10 minutes or so, still cried. She then stopped crying after she heard a vibration against a wooden bench, it was her PokeItem which was vibrating with what seemed to be something of importance considering only the Professor knew her number. "Where is that darn thing" she muttered as she searched through her brown purse until she found it and it was still buzzing. "Oh dear" she said as she dropped it as it vibrated across the floor until she stop it with her right foot.

She opened it up and it was Professor Elm, who did look very sweaty due to pressure or anxiety. He said "H-h... help!! We're under.... a-a-attac-----" which Marion figured out as the screen went black, that he was under attack. "I better clean up and go" she thought as she closed the PokeItem and went to the bathroom. She washed her face and fixed up her hair and then went to get changed to her normal clothing attire which was her simple purple sundress, she tied her hair and packed everything up. "Alright time to head off" she said starting to sound more cheerful as she walked outside the contest hall. "Where is Skylar" she thought as she walked to the path towards New Bark Town but before she exited the city of Cherrygrove, she saw a helicopter. Marion ran to it and looked at it, she saw Alex, Alec and some other guy and she blinked and asked "Am I supposed to be here" while her eyes were red as well as her face being kind of palish due to the amount of crying that she went through.

Nihill had barely left Cherrygrove City when his PokeItem began to buzz madly. At first, he ignored it. After all, he had no use for the phone. Why would he bother to utilize something that had no meaning to him?

Soon, however, the buzzing grew quite intense. Unable to ignore it any longer, Nihill reached into his pocket and pulled out his PokeItem. The device opened quickly, and though the image was blurred, he could make out a distressed Professor Elm.

"H-h... help!!" Elm cried. "We're under.... a-a-attac-----"

The image cut out, and Elm was apparently forced to hang up. Nihill stared at his PokeItem for a short while, then, released War.

"Char?" War said, looking up at its trainer.

"I recieved a call from Professor Elm," Nihill said. "The image was blurred, but I could tell that he was in great distress. Apparently, the lab is under attack."

"Char?!" War cried. "Char, charmander! Char char char!"

The small Fire-type began to flail its arms about desperately in an attempt to get its point across. Nihill, however, was by no means an idiot. Even without War's attempt at communication, he already knew what Johto's professor was requesting of him...and likely all the other trainers, as well.

"You want me to go to the lab and stop the attackers," Nihill surmised, "as does Professor Elm."

"Char!" War nodded. The Charmander then noticed a helicopter in Cherrygrove. "Char, char!"

War pointed to the helicopter, just as several other trainers entered. One, Nihill noted, was the boy with Treecko who had asked about the PokeItem back at the lab. Another was the trainer with Mudkip, notable for having defeated his opponent with extreme ease. The third was Alec, and the fourth was a girl who had used Torchic.

Nihill could tell his Charmander wanted him to go to the helicopter. He could tell War wanted him to sit with the trainers as the helicopter ferried them over to the lab. He could tell that War wanted only one overall goal from its trainer.

It wanted to do the right thing.

Nihill closed his eyes for a moment, considering his options. For some, it was completely appalling to have to pause and think about whether or not to fight in the battle against evil. Nihill, however, was not such an individual. He only wanted to perform such a task if it would benefit him or his Pokemon in some way.

Obviously, as War wanted to go, then that would be one benefit. But what was there for Nihill to gain? One thought crossed his mind: experience. Every trainer needed experience to be capable of growing in strength, and if someone was attacking the lab, then there was a great opportunity to gain experience.

"Fine," Nihill said. "We'll go."

War dashed off the moment Nihill said "fine", worried for Elm's safety as well as the safety of any starting Pokemon at the lab. Nihill followed at a much slower pace, as if Professor Elm's fate meant nothing to him. It never did, and in the view of the emotionless trainer, it never will.

Shortly after he went in the helicopter, Marion arrived: her eyes were swollen, Alec knew she had cried. "Am I supposed to be here?" She asked the three boys. Alec tried to comfort her;

"Yeah, sure you are." Alec said whilst tapping next to him, inviting her to sit down next to him. Piplup started playing with Torchic despite the gravity of the situation, they seemed to enjoy eachother a lot and seemed to have entirely forgotten about their battle a few hours back. Alec watched them, he had also forgotten about it, he hoped Marion wouldn't break down every time she lost a battle, but this was her first time, as was it his, but he was fine.

Alec then saw war, Nihill's charmander, jump in, ready for battle. Piplup then started to play with him too, Alec wondered where War's trainer was, he might be somewhere else, he'd not be concerned about Elm. Alec then saw him enter the helicopter and sit down opposite him.

Alec responded to Marion's comment, "Yeah, sure you are." Alec said while he was tapping a spot next to him. Marion smiled and sat right next to him in the helicopter. Marion saw his Piplup and decided to let her Torchic out. "Well aren't they fast friends" she said while both of their Pokemon were playing with each other and seemed to be quite good friends.

Marion looked at Alec and smiled again. "Look I want to thank you for trying to at least cheer me up, some how but you tried" she said so only both of them could hear. "I mean I got thrashed, I got too nervous and I choked badly" Marion explained while pushing back a strand of her dark blonde hair "I battle with my emotions and they are a very powerful ally and enemy so it is all about control I think" while watching her Pokemon play with his. "So thank you I guess" she continued while wondering what else was there to say.

Marion thought about something but it sounded weird. "Hey why don't you travel with Skylar and I, I mean if you want to but since our Pokemon are really good friends I don't see why not but it your choice" she asked trying not to sound awkward as possible and not realizing that her hand was close to his. Suddenly Marion saw a Charmander jumping in and it looked like it wanted to battle but where was the trainer, Marion looked around for the trainer as she then saw him at a much slower pace on the helicopter just sitting there. "I don't get a good vibe from him" she thought as she yawned while they waited for the helicopter to leave.

Alec was somehow happy to see Marion sit down next to him, he turned to face her, since she wanted to talk. "Look I want to thank you for trying to at least cheer me up, some how but you tried" she said so only both of them could hear. "I mean I got thrashed, I got too nervous and I choked badly" Marion pushed back a strand of her dark blonde hair, Alec found that hair extremely beautiful, almost mysterious, "I battle with my emotions and they are a very powerful ally and enemy so it is all about control I think, So thank you I guess" Marion stayed silent and watched her Pokémon play with his. Alec was slightly embarassed by what Marion told him, and tried his best not to blush.

"Urm, thanks, I guess aswell." Though Marion was watching her Pokémon, Alec watched her: she looked alot better than before, then Marion looked at him, and he quickly looked away before looking back at her. She spoke.

"Hey why don't you travel with Skylar and I, I mean if you want to but since our Pokemon are really good friends I don't see why not but it your choice." Marion made it sound a little awkward, but Alec was happy that she asked him, and he wanted to go, but then Nihill came in, and Marion talked again; "I don't get a good vibe from him", she whispered to Alec.

"Nor do I, and I'm travelling with him to find out exactly what's wrong with him, and then, I'm going to make him better, make him human, but he doesn't care whether or not I follow him, so I might tag along with you from time to time." Alec considered Nihill as some sort of study subject, it intrigued him to find out what was wrong with him. he laid back and waited for the others to arrive...
