===========================
I yawned and climbed out of bed, sure, I was tired, but Mom wanted me to sell some of our potions, charms, and magical instruments at the festival...Mom had teleported them there, so all i had to do was get to town and set up the booth. So after getting dressed, grabbing some food, and retrieving my staff...I was ready to go...until I noticed something amiss: Lita, my Pokemon companion, was not on my shoulder like she usually would be at this hour, It hit me: I'd forgotten to wake her in my excitement for the festival. I returned to my chamber to find her still snoozing peacefully by the window...just watching that tiny chest rise and fall made me glad she was alive and not dinner for a Poochyena or skewered on a guard's sword. "Hey..." I whispered to her. "Time to get up."
"Chu." she yawned, then climbed aboard my shoulder. With that, i trooped downstairs, stepped outside, and started down the road to town. Lita and I looked foward to Kaen's Festival every year..there was usually music and dancing, and the occasion magician or storyteller. Lita especially loved it when the desert magicians came; their tricks were far more exotic than anything the mages around here could muster.
Lita smiled as we approached the pass leading into town--the festive banners fluttering in the breeze probably caught her attention. We took a moment to look around as we strolled to our booth by the tavern--a brown haired boy was trying his luck at a game of chance--and judging from the pile of gold he had won, he knew how to win. The brown-haired individual had been breathing heavily--a sign he had been playing the game for quite some time. I brushed the boy off as we arrived at our booth--the boy looked focused on his game, and talking to him now would probably ruin his concentration. He kept hitting the reappearing targets like they were nothing--until he stopped to catch his breath. At that one critical moment, he took the hit that ended the game.

After collecting his tickets, Josh turned around and cursed under his breath, like anyone would upon losing a game. Meanwhile, Lita and I were setting out the first box of our wares: the potions. Next came a few charms, followed by the magical instruments. Mom especialy liked the Flute of the River. "Good game!" I called to the boy as he accepted his winnings at the end of his impressive winning streak. "What's your secret?"
"Didn't see that damn shot out of the corner..." he mumbled to himself again, then noticed the female. "Oh, hey. Thanks. My secret is the training I got three or so years ago. You need not only quick hands, but quick feet, and also a quick mind." he added. Everything must be lightning-fast."
"I see..." I replied, noting that the boy looked unuasually calm about losing. "Since you're here, fancy seeing my wares?" I asked, gesturing to the various items arranged on the table.
"I got nothing to do anyway...why not?" At that, she started to lead him to her booth. I waited as my potential customer looked each of my potions and artifacts over. "Once, I tried practicing a little magic, but it never worked. This was back before I moved here from the other kingdom..."
"Hm?" I was interested in hearing this boy's tale--he seemed to be an Inabian refugee, but his circumstances seemed different from the horrible fates others had suffered at the hands of Emperor Doel.
"...But I'd rather explain this somewhere in private. Is there any place we can go?"
"You can tell me over a drink, if you like." I offered. "You'll love Lina's selection of quality ales, beers, and wines." I was personally a fan of Lina's homebrew--one of the few non-alcoholic drinks Lina offered.
"That works for me," Josh said gleefully. "Let's get going."
"Stay with the items." I whispered to Lita. She nodded, and skittered on top of a box to watch as we disappeared inside the tavern.
"Good morning, Maya!" Lina, the bartender, smiled. "What can I get you for you and your guest?"
"The usual for me, please." I replied as I deposited a coin in the tip jar, then settled at a table by the bar.
"You're quite knowledgable if you know I'm Inaban by birth. Please keep this a secret from everyone."
"I will...your secret's safe with me." I assured the boy as Lina brought me my drink.
"And what can I get for your guest?"
"If you serve lemonade...nah, let's make it scotch."
"On the rocks or not?" Lina asked.
"Please."
"Okay..." Lina disappered behind the bar. This was Josh's cue.
"Alright. You know how Doel is becoming more and more aggressive, right?"
"Yes...Her Majesty has tried to send envoys to discuss peace with him." I began. "But he has made it clear that he wants nothing less than total world domination."
"He wasn't always like this. Back when I was a child, Inabu was one of the poorest towns in the region."
"But why has he become so dark...why has he succumbed to Shade's bad side?"
"Ah yes, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Josh, swordsman extraordinaire!" His voice turned subtly somber after that. "Over the first fifteen years of my life, he worked hard to rebuild the town. Because our family made a small investment in the restoration project, we became pretty wealthy." Josh almost broke out in tears, but held himself back.
"Mm-hmm." I beckoned Josh to go on, but I could tell that this next part, like so many other Inabian refugees, was going to be hard to tell.
"We were one of the first families to have the money to raise a Pokémon. For my nineteenth birthday, I brought in this cute Electrike. Its electric energy almost became a substitute for magic in our home."
"I see...and you had premission to raise it?" I was curious.
"It was one year ago that Doel showed signs of aggression. A year later, he brought in my entire family, including Electrike, to do Pokémon-related experiments. At that point, I took this sword here, painted its sheath yellow in memory of my Pokémon friend, and fled here," he said as he pointed to the sheath on his right.
"You mean, you lost your Electrike?"
"Not just lost. Confiscated."
"I'd be devastated if Lita were taken away from me like that..."
"As I fled, I barely avoided an explosion from a misdirected Pokémon attack, I thought. All I saw in the ravaged neighborhood used as testing around...was the only standing wall of an Inn. It had the front page of last week's newspaper on it. The headline read, 'Shinse courts still indecisive; chance of war more likely.'"
"That's because the envoys had returned with no peace deal, and the courts are trying to find a way to punish Doel without wiping the kingdom off the map."
"They're not going to do that. Doel has a huge army now. About halfway between here and there, I saw what looked like an orange dragon flying above Inabu."
"Some people have reported seeing a dragon like that..." I added. "Did it have a firey tail?"
"Yes, it did, though I could barely make it out. I was miles away."
"The courts are acknowleding that rthe only way out is to fight...although Her Majesty won't like to do that, but she will fight if she has too." I added. "It looks like she'll have to soon."
"Other times, I heard large explosions on the way. I got attacked by a couple Pokémon before I got here. See these scars on my leg?"
"Ow...those must have hurt..." I winced when I saw various scratch marks on josh's leg--they looked like Mightyena claw marks to me.
"I had to spend a lot of time at the clinic, but I'm just as good as before now. Is there anything you can possibly show me that will help me figure out what's going on?" At this point, Josh seemed desperate. "I want to fight against the Emperor now, but I don't have any sort of force backing me up. Is there anything?"
"Will I can probably help on your quest..."
"How?!" Josh's face turned from a frown to a gleeful smile. "Tell me!"
"If you want to infiltrate Doel's castle, you'll have to figure out how to pass his magical barriers..."
"This isn't helping! I want answers!" Josh was clearly in rage over his past now.
"Her Majesty keeps records of all Pokemon here and in Inabu...and keeping a Pokemon here is only done with Her Majesty's permission."
"I need to learn more about these Pokémon...and how I can get another one." He calmed down after hearing about the records.
"Did you hear about the Hero Competition?" I asked, changing the subject.
"There's a Hero Competition? Sounds like something up my alley."
"The prize this year is a Sword of Kaen and a chance at a named Pokemon."
"Where am I supposed to register?"
"They're registering at the arena to the west of the square...maybe you'll own a new sword and a new Electrike."
"Alright. I'm headed there. Are you entering, too?"
"I would, but I have business to do." I replied.
