the game data has been scrubbed, but note that he's reusing the same animations every time
One where he poses and sends out a pokemon and one where he takes off his visor and gets serious (& then sends out a pokemon). He's also using a great ball which is notable since I don't think anyone else in the demo does. You'll note the Lass never deviates from her standard intro.

This isn't a case of other animations being mapped to him, its a case of the game playing the closest available animation for that model to fit the situation. Those are Kukui's intro animations.

Well, the Rising Star in the demo uses Great Balls, but obviously that doesn't matter too much here. I find it odd that unnecessary Kukui animations are still in the demo and aren't scrubbed. Then again, every Dex/PC image was kept in, so who knows.

Still, even if he is battled in the game, I doubt that he's a 2nd rival, which was more of the point I was looking to make.

Never really said he's the second rival.

1:25-1:40 They have the same background as Hau's intro but there are two animations for it. Meaning there's someone else with a rival battle intro. And Gladion seems to have his own on 1:49-1:56, you can tell because of the rumbling animation which he has, plus they're his colors.

If they have the same background as Hau, isn't it just as likely it's a late game new animation for Hau?

I'd guess that all of Kukui's battle-related animations are in the demo because they're associated with his battle model that iiiiiiiiiiii think is used for the capture tutorial

It is, so iiiiiiiiiii guess that's another oversight. I like that he uses Great Balls, though. Since Ultra Balls are for the big time Trainers (Ace Trainers, Kahunas, and Admins so far), and normal Poke Balls are for your Youngsters and Lasses and such, it makes sense that a failed Trial goer turned Professor fails somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

I'd say yes. Rivals are certainly known to change throughout the game (just look at the various Blue sprites and the Victory Road Wally battle).

Looks have usually been pretty important in the pokemon games, so given how friendly and attractive the Aether Foundation people are I wouldn't be surprised if they turn out to be well-intentioned while still being antagonists. That is our character may end up opposing them but they may not necessarily be evil so much as misguided. The heavy focus on family among Team Skull also makes one think they will end up redeeming themselves in the end.

I personally see Aether's motive being rather nihilistic - perhaps they believe the world can't go on being harsh to Pokemon, and so are trying to bring the UBs back into our world and ultimately causing the world's end.

Ah, so Aether's pretty much confirmed to be bad guys.

Not really shocked, but hopefully no other bigger story spoilers come in...

Wally though was a third party rival who only got a new animation because of development. Hau doesn't seem to be the kind of guy that changes even if he is serious, which is why I think it's somebody else's intro.

Lusamine and the Champion Battle(?) intros looks outstanding.

Ikr. Game Freak have really put care and afford into this generation, and that is hyping me up into oblivion.

And is making me sound like a dying bear whenever S/M news comes out.

Although because I'm ill I sound like a dying bear anyway.

I think I'm just a dying bear with a gaming obsession.

Oh yeah, and judging by those colors I think the last two Kahunas will specialize in Dark-types and Ground-types (Mary Mudsdale confirmed!).

Dark type Kahuna, is that good enough for out first Dark type Gym Leader?

Oh I hope that is true. A Dark specialist outside of the Elite Four is LONG overdue

Verrrry interesting to see The Aether Foundation there. They never showed them in a battle yet so I assume them turning evil is meant to be the big twist.

Thing is I know this ain't happening, but...

Imagine if we were all going into S/M like "ooh either Aether or Skull is evil" and then in major plot twist it's the kahunas that are evil. That would be the ultimate troll.

No. Actual Dark-type gym or riot.

Exactly. What, do you expect a fandom to be understanding about an arbitrary thing they've been wanting? Are you new to the internet?

But yeah, it could be Dark and then Ground, though that then leaves the question of who Bluebeard von Pelipper is...

Ok, so maybe, just maybe, they will build up an Elite Four type group in the game, just like how the E4 was built up through Gen 1. You can battle them, but only after completing the Island Challenge. The Trial Captains all faced them, but as they were unable to defeat them, hence their becoming Captains and not psuedo-E4 members or the Champion. Among the members of this group we could see Beardy.
And, ta-da! Rampant speculation complete :)

And wally doesn't seem like the person who would fight you in the middle of a sunfilled flower field (in a cave...) while his out of nowhere theme blares sick guitar solos at you but that happened

Besides Kukui of all people gets 2 battle intros so why not the rival you fight all game? Doesn't even have to be him getting serious or have character development (which he probably will because even the XY friends had a character arc no matter how flimsy). Maybe Hau gets a z ring or mega bracelet and his animation changes to reflect it, for example?
