Pokémon Sword and Shield - How will they impact the anime?

Not thinking twice!
I'd actually take them being shoehorned into every episode over them appearing once or twice every 10-14..... how's that even fair? We only went ONE freaking episode without the classmates appearing in some capacity. None for worst professor.... -.-

They're literally the only reason I watch the anime anymore, I barely rewatch episodes without them
The only thing about them from this saga I want to stick is for them and the Pokemon to actually have character again, it was hardly present in XY and not at all in BW
If they don't want to use them, then it's time for them to go. But they seem as scared of that as if not more than Ash winning a League... almost as if they know a lot of people will drop off with them gone
Elm barely appeared during johto, fam

Ultra Legends was probably an okay compromise for Team Rocket. They appear more regularly, but still don't interrupt most development episodes for the twerps, and they tend to dovetail better into plots over just barging in and doing the usual formula no matter what story is going on. It's still a bit disappointing for what potential SM offered them, but as a standard series it's pretty good use of them, especially considering they're usually at their worst in every series' final season.

A blend of Ultra Legends with maybe DA's better antagonist run would arguably be a good run for them on paper.

I'd hate to see Musashi, Kojirou, and Nyasu leave the anime since they're pretty much of equal importance to the series as Satoshi is from my perspective, but I've seen a lot of speculation that SM might be their last saga. I don't agree with those theories however since I seem to recall people claiming that Best Wishes would be the Rocket-dan trio's last saga too, and of course it wasn't. The writers can figure out some way to keep the Rocket-dan trio relevant in Galar if they try hard enough.

Well, BW was supposed to be their last saga. They had a big operation and Giovanni even showed up in person. It would've been a bad last saga for TRio due to their lack of personality for about 2/3 of BW, but it would've worked as a send off for the organization as a whole.

Operation Tempest would have been a bad send off for the trio themselves, though DA wouldn't have been TOO bad, since they'd gone back to their comical selves by that point and their 'classic' face offs in that season had been reasonable (it wasn't until about mid XY that their dynamic with the twerps became completely bland). They even got to keep a little of their former competence and a bit of their old funny chemistry with the heroes revived, meaning the rivalry was sometimes fresher than it was even by the end of the OS (BW was about the only series they got a palpable 'final stand' in the departure episode as well instead of a standard curbstomp).

Their last appearance in the finale, a pretty pathos inducing moment where they swear they'll bounce back to greatness and come back for Pikachu would have been an okay way to have them bow out but still leave openings for return appearances every now and then.

My guess is Ash will end up traveling with the female player character and she will have some made up anime thing as her goal and a male gym leader will be the other travel companion and of course Team Rocket will be stocking him.

Stocking him? They just gonna keep him in a suitcase or something?

The female playable character seems like the safest choice from my perspective since her design is generic enough to be easy to animate unlike Rurina's, and would seem more fitting as Satoshi's teammate to me than Saito at least.

The female playable character would be the worst option as a companion imo. She'll probably have a goal like performing that doesn't involve battling and she probably won't battle much or have more than 3 Pokemon on her team.

This seems to be implying that a different character would somehow be spared this fate...
The main cast is definitely going to have a girl on it, whether that be the player character or someone else, and going by the show's record in recent years, she's probably going to be stereotypically girly... though I would absolutely be thrilled if they decided to go a different direction with her.

Any other possibilities for a female companion other than a gym leader and the playable character?

I'd figure a gym leader would be more battle-focused, whereas there is probably more leniency for a playable character.

Dunno, there isn't much more characters revealed and I highly doubt Sonia would be a companion. I wouldn't mind with an OC this time, it could work.

About the girl's goal, who knows. Maybe, with sports gimmick as a thing, they do some sort of pokelympics where the girl can take part.

Well there is Sonia but unless they de age her significantly she is a bit too old.

Currently my top picks for female companions are Gloria and Bea

Everything revealed about Sword and Shield indicate that the anime is going to be XY 2.0 with an extra dose of shounen sports anime on the side. The more stuff gets revealed about the games (sponsorships, broadcasting, the focus on victory and ‘official’ wins, uniforms, endorsements, the literal Champion Cup) the more I feel confident about that assertion. I highly doubt the choice of female companion will affect their treatment; if anything the tone of the series is pretty important when it comes to writing them. Take SM and XY, the two most recent examples. In XY, Serena got her own focus and was close to winning Kalos Queen; but it was more sidelined in comparison to Ash’s hero journey in Kalos- the main focus of that saga. In SM, the girls have lighthearted (blowing bubbles) and more down to Earth goals (running a restaurant) due to the laidback/stationary nature of the saga.

Whether the girl is Gloria, Nessa, Bea, or Sonia, the handling of their character will all rely on what the writers want to convey in accordance to the series.

And Cilan didn't look too old?
Sonia could easily pass as Brock/Cilan's age, just take away the whole thing about being Leon's friend. Saves her from being forced into a romance with him

Lillie had only one Pokemon for 90% of the SM series, barely battled and had no real active goal.

I see no problems.

I agree with the sentiment of having a less stereotypically girly character which is why I think Bea has the best chance of providing an interesting dynamic with Ash, based on what we’ve seen so far we would avoid any similarity with recent “girly” girls.

Well if we do get a type specialist on the main cast for Sword and Shield at least Bea would be a Fighting type specialist which we haven't had yet, and it would be interesting to see a member of the Hitmon line be on the main cast for once. So far this is how it breaks down in terms of type specialist that have been on the main cast:

Kanto & Johto: Misty(Water)
Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, & Sinnoh: Brock(Rock(although given his goal and what pokemon he caught it didn't seem like he was really a type specialist))
Unova: Cilan(Grass), and Iris(Dragon)
Kalos: Clemont(Electric)
Alola: Kiawe(Fire), Lana(Water), Sophocles(Electric), Mallow(Grass)

So hopefully we don't get another Grass, Water, or Electric type specialist.

I really hope Bea or Nessa become traveling companions. They’re good designs. Milo would be ok but I wouldn’t be upset if he wasn’t so picked
