Pokemon: A Fresh Start

Now, that D/P is out of the way and the number of pokemon almost reaching the 500 mark, who thinks pokemon should get a fresh start when the next generation rolls over? Im not sure about the rest of you but 493 is already a handful trying to complete and if nintendo continues adding up to it, it will be even more of a daunting task (just imagine, 700, 800, or a 1000 pokemon to collect). Here's the idea, a whole new world (i.e. no relation to Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Shinou), whole new region, a whole new batch of pokemon never seen before (no evos or pre-evos of previous pokemon), and a set of new characters (no more Prof. Oak). Just think of it like Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow all over again. A completely fresh start where you have no preconceived notions of what the game will be like or what pokemon youre going to see (no more, oh my god another cave! better get ready for zubats). Like the idea or not? Just something for discussion.

edit:the game allows you to trade over previous gen pokemon. the main difference is that all pokemon are new and there will be no old pokemon encountered in the wild like in R/S/E, wherein you are able to see wild oddish, geodude, zubats or tentacools

I know I've said it in previous threads, but... Honestly, I don't think many people are concerned with "catching them all" anymore. Even then, most who ARE still interested in Pokemon for the collecting purposes actually want more of a challenge. 1000 Pokemon to collect would be a dream come true to some of us. Myself included. The more the better! *waves flags*

But I love the idea of a cave with no Zubats. As long as the previous Pokemon exist in the game's data (in other words: I can trade or transfer old Pokemon over from my old games) I'm for it. :3 If not... well, then that's another story.

Do you really think after 10 years of working on Pokemon Game Freak would just throw them out the window? Its not gonna happen

Thats kinda like saying "Hey! I'm bored of the animals on planet Earth! All these obscure new species being discovered all the time... There's too many! Lets go to Mars and have Martians as our pets instead!"

I doubt it would happen as so many people have their faves and are not going to be too happy about them not being included.

I think that the way R/S handled it was fine. Although I was disappointed that so many pokemon were missing it made sense. Just as to the region of Kanto a 'Camerupt' was a new creature, to the people of Hoenn a 'Clefairy' was new...So instead of 'wow 100+ new pokemon discovered' we are instead taken to a new region to whom these new ones are the 'norm'. In a way the new games are like the originals, new instead of old. That is why you can see, in the 3rd and 4th gens that there are some 'counterparts' that take the place of old ones (E.g. 'early birds' etc.)

I can't see Game Freak 'killing off' old pokemon as it were, as they are what the franchise is based on. Old pokemon would still need to be incorperated into the game, in the way current game handle it: They live in a different region. Else all previous games, anime, toys etc become redundant.

I suppose you could compare it to the real world, different animals (Pokemon) are in different countries (Pokemon regions), so a zebra lives in Africa but not in Japan. So you woun't see one in the wild in Japan, nor does the zebra have any influence over Japan's own creatures (pokemon/dex) but you can always (trade) one over, then take a trip to Australia for a kangaroo... Even if these creatures are not native to you country, they still exist.

For me its 'more the merrier' as more pokemon = more variety. You don't have to collect them all, but if you do more = a bigger collection. IT would be like a stamp collector complaining that there are too many new stamps. Or throwing out his old stamps, a collection 10 years in the making, and starting 100% afresh, instead of including his old and new.

But yes, a region that has never heard of a 'Zubat' is a good idea...

I don't think customs would allow that! ^^;

totally different thing. if you read right, im not against having new species discovered all the time, its actually what i was going for, meaning completely new pokemon.

i guess i should have refined my idea a little more. i knew some people would be attached to the old pokemon. i guess what i really wanted was to have a new pokemon game wherein all the pokemon you will encounter in the wild are new (when D/P came out, people were complaining about the sheer number of evos and pre-evos; and the lack of new pokemon) but it still gives you the capability to transfer the old pokemon into it in case you want to use them. all im saying is, no more zubats or tentacools while inside a cave or surfing the water because these pokemon end up becoming "filler" pokemon for these areas. it would be nice to see new common pokemon for these areas instead of always having to expect zubats and tentacools (i.e. squid pokemon on water or salamanders in caves).

It'd be fun, but I don't care about catching new pokes. I'm way too lazy to do that.

The new games don't have the charm of the old ones to make it like RBGY again. Who's with me remembering opening up your first pokemon game, plopping it in, and seeing Snorlax vs Nidorino for the first time? It was magical, because you didn't know what to expect. Now, even with all new pokemon, we know what's going to happen.

yeah the effect is no longer there

What do I put here?
It wouldn't be a Pokemon game without Zubat's in the cave and Tentacool's in the sea. As much as I hate them...it'd be weird.

This is why I'm not going to buy that game.

you take it too literally. its similar to RBY in the sense that every pokemon you see is new. no old pokemon encountered in the wild but the game would still allow you to trade pokemon from previous gen if you wanted.

Good idea, bad idea. I love pokemon as it is. Don't change it.

I think I understand your point a bit better now.
It would be nice to have a region with no onld pokemon in one sense, but on the other it would be nice to incorperate some old ones.
But yes, no Zubats and Tentacools would be nice for a change. I'd rather it be that the regional dex of a new region incorperate different old pokemon, not just Pikachu, Geodude, Machop, Zubat, Tentacool, Magikarp, Psyduck, Goldeen and Marill etc. There has to be somewhere where they don't live (or kept in a Safari park)...It seems a waste not to incorperate some of the 493 current pokemon.
So long as the rest of the old pokemon can be traded into the game...
