Pokemon Advance

Chapter 1: A New Beginning for Everything

A slightly cool wind blew from the north across the blades of grass that covered the thirty-six acre farm. Outstretched branches from the oaks and pines seemed to wave gently in the morning breeze. Flocks of Pidgey dipped through the cluttered forest before emerging into a small opening that turned out to be a path neatly carved and weaved through the woods. Two small birds with melon colored feathers landed on a branch that extended over the trail as a young blue haired boy walked past. His extra large, white guard shirt sagged over his short pants. The large straps almost covered his entire shoulders and where the neck of the shirt hung down, showed his small, bare chest. Little buttoned pockets covered the legs of his olive green pants, which stopped at his knees. The black sandals on his feet were large, mainly made to fit a person with large feet. He looked left and right, scanning the area in search of something. Lifting his right hand, he placed it near the side of his mouth.

“Ticharia!” he called, only to hear his echo respond. “Ticharia!” He repeated, making near by Furret, who couldn’t be seen, raise their heads from the tall blades of grass. They scampered away and disappeared into the tall grass as he passed. A small brown, long eared creature walked out in the middle of the path. It stared at the boy with oval ivory eyes while its white tipped tail moved from side to side. It shook its white mane as the boy knelt in front of it. “Did you find her Eevee?” The Pokémon shook its head slowly, watching its trainer look from left to right. “Do you hear that?” The Eevee perked its ears forward and looked around, trying to locate where the sound originated.

He heard the sound of a small voice, speaking cheerfully and decided to follow the sound until he found the source. Finally, he could make out a ginger color between the bushes. Slowly, he pushed the shrubbery aside as not to startle something that may not be what he expected.

“And this is my ma, my dad, and my brother Kae,” a little girl’s voice spoke. There was a little chirping sound that seemed to reply to what she said. Kae pushed the bushes further away to notice a little girl in a ginger dress with a white apron. Her brown hair hung down in a ponytail that came to her shoulders. She was holding up a picture in front of a Pidgey that looked it over. Kae sighed with relief as he moved away from the bushes and stood beside her. The two looked behind them to see who the stalker was. “Hi Kae!”

“Tish, what are you doing all the way out here?” he asked as he knelt down beside her as she sat up. “We were worried about you.”

“Sorry,” she muttered. “I saw Pidgey fall and I went to help.” She picked up the little bird and held it up to Kae. He held up his hands to stop her from pushing the creature into his face.

“Okay, okay, I see. Let’s get back before mom send Bear,” he told her after standing up straight.

“Okie. Pidgey come too!” she gleefully shouted. Ticharia set the bird on her shoulder and grabbed Kae’s hand. She pulled her index along with her pinky finger inward, separating their hands and placed her thumb in-between the index and middle finger of Kae’s hand. It made holding hands more uncomfortable for Kae than it was to her. He helped her through the bushes while Eevee led the way.

Not far away sat a two-story log cabin with gray smoke gently floating out the chimney. A woman appearing in her mid-thirties was sweeping the mat in front of the door. Stopping her work, she wiped the sweat away with her arm, hitting her light brown bangs as she did. She moved her hands to the back of her head where she removed a black clamp. Her hair fell to the middle of her back, shimmering in the sunlight. She clinched the clamp with her teeth as her hands folded her hair up again. Holding the bun with her left hand, she took the clamp from her mouth and fastened it onto her hair so that it stayed firmly in one place.

“Mom!” she heard a voice in a distance. She glanced to see her son and daughter walking towards her. Eevee ran ahead of them only to be stopped by a large ivory and gainsboro dog. Thick black fur protruded from its back, extending slightly farther than its body. Dark, curved arrow like patches sat above its content red eyes as well as on the bottom. Instead of having the usual black stocking on its legs like its kind, it stayed gray like most of its body. It wagged its tail as it lowered its head to be at eye level with Eevee before growling benevolently and darting off.

“Ticharia, where have you been?” their mother asked, leaning the broom on the house. “I was worried about you. And you’re filthy.” She walked up to Ticharia and used her white apron to wipe the dirt off the child’s face.

“Sorry mom. I saw this Pidgey fall and went to help,” Ticharia explained through the wipes of her face. Her mother stopped and took a look at the small bird on her shoulder.

“Well aren’t you a little cutey,” she said as she held out her hand. The little bird hopped on and she pulled it back to her, stroking its chest feathers.

“Can I keep it?” her daughter asked, tugging on her mother’s blue and white-checkered dress.

“I don’t see why not,” she answered, giving the little bird back to her. “But you have to take care of it.” Ticharia nodded. “Now go inside and wash up for dinner, you too Kae.” Ticharia ran inside while Kae walked in the doorway, but didn’t go in. He looked back at his mother.

“Mom, has dad come out yet?” Kae got a depressing look on his face.

“No,” she told him. She put her right hand on her cheek while her other arm supported it. “I’m getting worried myself. It’s been three days. He must’ve made a break through.” He looked down before walking inside the house.
----
Later, Ticharia lied on the floor of her room with her teeth clamped down onto the eraser of the pencil. She looked down at her paper covered in pencil marks. Names were jotted down in sloppy handwriting with b’s appearing as h’s, a’s resembling o’s and the v looking like u’s. Her eyes went from her notebook to her Pidgey, who was sitting on her bedpost pecking at its wing, then back to her notebook. The white door of her room opened quietly. Her mother entered, watching her kick her feet back and forth in the air. The Pidgey stopped what it was doing and stared at her mother with its head cocked to the side.

“Hmm, how about Pudgy? No, you’re not fat. Fredrick? No way!” she scratched the names out as she went down the line. “What about Falcon? Falcon sounds good.”

“It does. Falcon is a great name,” her mother put in. Ticharia leaned her head backwards until it looked as though her mother was standing upside down.

“You really think so?” she asked again, smiling.

“Mm-hm,” her mother nodded. “Now you and Falcon come to the kitchen for dinner.” Her mother left, leaving her to pick up the papers that she had thrown on the floor and under the bed.

“Come on Falcon,” she told the Pidgey. It hopped on Ticharia’s shoulder and the two headed out the door.

Sitting at the table, Kae stared at his plate, twirling the long noodles on his fork while his head leaned on his fist. He sighed, looking deeply at his plate. His Eevee sat on the floor next to him and looked at him with concern. It nudged his leg, but Kae only put a meatball on the floor for it and Eevee knocked it away. The ball of meat rolled in front of the Mightyena from earlier, which now wore a collar that had Bear on it, who didn’t hesitate eating it. Bear lied down and awaited another snack.

Ticharia entered, skipping towards the table, but stopped to pet the dog on the way. She pulled a chair from the table and jumped on. Falcon hopped on the table and began to peck at the lopsided bird in the spoon. Ticharia hummed a made up tune as her mother sat a smaller plate of noodles with red sauce in front of her. Without hesitating, she began downing it, slurping in the ends of the noodles that didn’t make it inside her mouth.

Kae glanced over at the stove where his mother was standing, watching over the food to make sure nothing burned. He scanned over the kitchen, looking at the honeydew walls and the items stuck to the refrigerator by the means of a magnet. Two pictures stuck out against the beige fridge and he looked them over. The one on the left was of him, his sister who was sucking on a pacifier, his mother looking younger as did his father and Bear, who was still a Poochyena. He remembered his parents saying they took the picture in Greenfield, but Kae didn’t remember.

The second picture on the right had only one person in it. A boy about Kae’s age in a white guard shirt, smiling and appearing as though he didn’t have a care in the world. His hair was the same color as Kae’s, but a shade darker. On his shoulder was a large scar that looked as though someone took a large razor to it. Kae had been meaning to ask one of his parents about it, but never got around to doing so.

“Mom, who’s that kid in the picture?” Kae asked.

“Hm?” She looked in the direction he was pointing. “That’s your older brother Metz. He’s eight in that picture, but now, I think he’d be around…I think…fourteen.”

“My older brother? How come you have his picture up there?” Kae wondered aloud.

“Today would be his birthday,” she replied, getting a sadden expression. “Every year, we put his picture on the refrigerator so we won’t forget.”

“Where is he?” Kae starred at his mother who turned away from him.

“He…was…kidnapped on the same day he had that picture taken,” she told him. “The police searched, we searched and we even hired private investigators to find him, but he never turned up. There was no sign of him. It was as if he’d disappeared.” His mother chuckled a little. “I won’t be surprised if it did happen.” Kae looked down at his plate, upset and ashamed that he had questioned his mother about the picture.

“I did it! Its finally done!” a voice shouted from the door under the stairs startling everyone. The trio looked towards the door that led into the large basement of their house just as it flew open. A large muscle figure ran through the door, heading towards the kids’ mother. Once he’d reached her, he grabbed her around the waist and picked her up in the air, spinning her around. She hung onto his bulky arms as she was being twirled.

“Ronnie stop! Put me down!” she told him between laughs. Her husband slowed to a stop and sat her down, holding onto her until her dizziness left. “What have you finally done dear?”

“You’ll see,” he said as he turned his towards his children. “I want you to see too.” Ronnie was a large man, almost six foot. His blue beard and mustache was connected while his head hair was spikey navy blue. The large blue jumpsuit and the white shirt he wore were covered with black spots and oil stains. Ronnie’s dark brown boots were covered with white, black, light brown, and red spots assumingly from different chemicals. His black eyes filled with the excitement of a kid and his slightly wrinkled pale skin glowed.

“Daddy!” Ticharia leapt out the chair, turning it over. Falcon jumped in fright and ruffled its feathers, causing itself to appear larger than before. His daughter ran up to him, jumping into his outstretched arms.

“Ah, there’s my little girl!” Ticharia was lifted off the ground and seated on his right shoulder. “My you’ve grown since I last saw you.” Ticharia just smiled in return as her arms went around his neck for a hug. Ronnie chuckled until his dark blue eyes went over to his son, who still sat at the table, twirling the noodles onto his fork. “Mm.” He put Ticharia by Meiko before heading over to Kae. He didn’t turn his head to look at his father when his large shadow loomed over him. “Hey son.”

“Dad,” Kae replied coldly.

Ronnie pulled a chair from the table and sat next to his son. “I know you’re mad at me for not being here like you wanted me to, but I was working on this very important project.”

“Yeah, I know. I guess it was just more important than family,” Kae said, shifting his eyes to Falcon who seemed to have, amazingly fallen asleep.

“No, it wasn’t. Of course you guys are the most important thing in my life,” Ronnie answered. He sighed at the fact that he had to go through a situation like this again due to the fact Kae always uses the “it was more important than family” line when he didn’t get his way. “Remember when we had bought you that video game for Christmas?” Kae nodded. “Remember when you didn’t want to come out your room for almost the entire day? Well, you could say I was doing the same thing except I was just working on it a little longer.”

“Five years isn’t a little longer,” Kae had let know him.

“Yeah, I know, but I think its something that you’ll like though.” His father stood up, and sat his large hand on his son’s shoulder. Kae finally looked at his father, noticing that his dark blue hair had grown a little longer than when he’d last seen him, but not by much.

“Will you be able to spend more time with us…and take us places?”

“Mm-hm,” Ronnie nodded. Kae finally smiled before sliding off the chair. He walked with his father to the large door from whence he came. Meiko and Ticharia went right behind, followed by Bear who carried the sleeping Pidgey on its back. The door led to some stairs that spiraled downwards like something from a castle. Small lamps lit the way as they carefully made their way down.

“I’ve never been down here before. How much farther?” Kae asked his father, looking up at him.

“Not much farther now,” he answered just as stepped off the stairs and onto a metallic gray floor. Everyone waited behind him as he moved up to the door. Ronnie placed his hand on a pad that had a handprint the same size as his illuminated in dodger blue. A light scanned over his hand before a door opened. Bright, white light spilled through the opening, brightening the corridor. “Come on.” Ronnie walked in first while the other followed unsurely behind.

“I feel like I’m going into another dimension,” Kae stated. The room was enormous and seemed to be twice the size of their house. The walls were a powder blue color and the floor, a metallic gray. A variety of tools littered the floor as did paper and unusual material rarely seen. To the right of them about six or seven feet away was a tremendous computer with a huge keyboard. The door automatically closed behind them as they gasped at what sat in front of them. Ticharia jumped behind her mother and looked from there. “D-Dad,” Kae stuttered, pointing forward. “Is that a giant Mightyena?”

Ronnie chuckled at his son’s startled reaction. “Yeah, but its not real.” He jogged over to it and knocked on it a couple of times with his fist.

“Ronnie, what is it supposed to be?” Meiko asked him, looking the giant object over.

“Pokemon Battle Mechanism, or the P.B.M. The ruling body wanted me to build it for the war and the protection of Johto,” he explained. “With all the research papers and books I wrote on battle equipment, they thought I’d be the best one to give building it a try.” Ronnie threw his thumb up towards the top of the machine. “Would you guys like a tour inside?” Everyone nodded.

They stepped onto a small elevator that began to ascend after Ronnie had pushed the arrow that pointed upward. The contraption slowly rose, taking them farther from the ground. Ticharia clung to her mother for safety while Kae kept looking down. It slowed to a halt and Ronnie pushed the door open.

“Careful, watch your step,” Ronnie warned them. He stepped off first and held out his hand to first his daughter, then his wife. Kae got up by himself and Bear jumped off behind him. Making sure everyone was standing safely, Ronnie went over to a pad and punched in some numbers before the door opened automatically. The latch opened and he helped his family in.

“Whoa! Cool!” Kae exclaimed, running up to the window of the machine. He looked down to see everything appearing to be a tiny speck. Ticharia tugged on his shirt, wanting him to lift her up so she could see. He strained to pick up his little sister, but managed to get her up.

“This is amazing Ronnie,” Meiko told him, touching the brown pilot’s seat. “Is this the only one in the world?”

“Yeah. Since that Team Shadow took over the Orre region, we’ve been at war with them for who knows how long. Innocent lives of civilians and soldiers were being taken at an astounding rate so they decided to come up with something to put a stop to it. It just so happened that one of their members were reading one of my books and that’s when they decided to contact me.” Ronnie rubbed his navy blue hair. “If this machine works, then we might be able to finally put a stop to this war.”

Meiko looked at Kae and Ticharia who were still looking out the window. “Mm, I hope so. But doesn’t that mean that you’ll have to go into the war yourself?”

“Don’t worry. I told them I wasn’t entering this war and that they’d have to find someone else to pilot this thing.”

“Dad, what’s that?” Kae interrupted, pointing at a large cylinder in the back. The center of the cylinder was a cyan white glass while the bottom was a solid black platform as well as the top. Six thick wires were connected around the top of it that led into the ceiling.

“That? That’s what I call the Set Pod. Its where we put the Pokemon so if need be, they’ll be able to pilot the P.B.M. Here, I’ll show you.” Ronnie went up to the seat and pressed a black button on the arm of it. The glass was lifted into the ceiling of the machine revealing a large hole in the middle of the circle. Bear gently slipped Falcon onto the floor before jumping into the pod. The glass lowered back down and Bear was trapped inside. The bottom the Mightyena stood on began to light up and the Pokémon was levitated a little ways off the platform. “When I turn the P.C.P, or the Pokemon Copilot-up to three, the Pokemon is in full control of the machine. It’s able to deliver attacks and move as if it was on land itself. Incase of an emergency, the Pokemon can be ejected and land safely because the pod will surround itself in a metal cover when released.”

“Um, okay, but what about Pokemon that shoot water guns and flamethrowers? Wouldn’t it be kinda small when it tries to take on another machine?” Kae assumed.

“When the Pokemon is inside the Set Pod and releases an attack, the attack goes up through that hole and into the head on the machine where, I guess you could say, it gets super charged and comes out wherever the Pokemon releases its attack, say through the mouth. When it comes out, the attack would be a hundred thousand times the size of its normal attack. You saw how that stuff on the floor looked from all the way up here, right.” Kae nodded. “Then that’s how we’ll look compared to a water gun or flamethrower.“

“It seem that the uh…P.B.M, would be indestructible by when hit by the attacks. The only way, to me, to take it down would be to use missiles,” his wife mentioned.

“Not necessarily. When the P.B.M is on copilot three, the machine changes. Instead of just the machine itself feeling the hits, the Pokemon will be feeling it as well,” he answered. “The Pokemon will be in actual battle when on copilot three, except they’re inside the machine. For example, if a P.B.M Mightyena is on copilot three, and uses crunch on a P.B.M Alakazam who’s also on P.C.P three, then the Alakazam will take damage as if both were battling outside the machine. Do you understand?”

Everyone nodded silently. “When the machine in on P.C.P three, the machine will succumb to missiles and rockets more easily, allowing it to be an easy take down if hit. If there’s a person who’s piloting a P.B.M psychic against you and is on three while you’re on one or two, the psychic will be able to lift your machine if it wanted. I know it’s kinda difficult to understand, but it’s a cinch once you start piloting it.”

“You said Pokemon copilot three, so what about one and two?” Meiko asked.

“Level one is just the human in control of it. He’s the only on moving it and launching the missiles and stuff. Level two is when the Pokemon is steering and controlling the movements, but the human is the one still firing the attacks. And of course level three is when the Pokemon takes over completely and the machine adapts to the Pokemon or should I say, becomes the Pokemon.”

“Its so awesome! Can we take a test run?” Kae excitedly asked.

“Mm, no, not tonight. We can early in the morning. It’s late and I think I kept you guys up way past your bedtime. Lets get out of here so you can sleep. I’ll tell you more about it in the morning.” The three began to climb out while Ronnie let Bear out. Ticharia had already taken Falcon so it darted up the ladder. Ronnie looked over the inside of the machine and smiled at his accomplishment. “After all these years, it’s finally done. It’s a new beginning for everything, I guess.” He turned off the lights and climbed up the ladder.

Chapter 2: A Living Nightmare

Kae and Ticharia raced down the hall towards their room followed by their mother. Falcon had woken up and was flying after them while Eevee walked beside Meiko. Kae jumped through the doorway, winning the race with Ticharia in second. Kae leapt onto his emerald colored bed only to bounce once. He rolled the covers back and stuck his legs under. Before he could pull the covers back over himself, his mother was at his side and pulled the covers over him.

Kae groaned. “Mom, I’m old enough to tuck myself in now. You don’t have to do it anymore, it makes me feel kinda embarrassed,” he told her.

“Embarrassed? So its embarrassing to show how much I care for my son?” she asked, trying make a fake sadden expression, but instead made a silly face when trying to suppress her smile.

“Mm, I wish you wouldn’t put it like that. It makes me sound like a bad person,” Kae told her as he turned over. She walked over to the already asleep Ticharia and pulled the covers over her and kissed her on the forehead. Meiko left, leaving the door cracked.

She walked down the hall, turning off the lights as she went. She entered her white walled bedroom. Ronnie lied in the bed, reading a book that sat propped up on a stand next to their bed and writing in a notebook that lied against his legs. He shifted his eyes when his wife entered and shut the door to the bathroom she went into.

“You know! It feels good to be back in an actual bed again, rather than a cot,” he announced, closing his notebook and putting it on the stand.

“I guess so,” she answered, opening the door dressed in her mint colored nightgown. Her husband whistled at her, making Meiko blush before she playfully scowled at him, which made him chuckle. She climbed into bed and rolled the covers up to her waist, but didn’t slide down. “With tomorrow as your first day not working on that project anymore, what are you going to do?”

“Well, I don’t know. What ever ya’ll want to do, right after I deliver the P.B.M to that place in Goldenrod in the morning,” he told her.

“Don’t forget that you told Kae you would take him for a ride in it.” Meiko reached for the lamp next to her side of the bed.

“Don’t worry, I won’t forget.” The room became dimmer as his wife turned off her lamp. Ronnie touched his and the lamp blacked out, turning the room into a black hole.

“Oh and one more thing, why did you call this a special gown?” she asked him in the dark.

“I dunno…because its special I guess,” he said, holding a bit of amusement in his voice.

“But what’s special about it?” she demanded in a soft tone, only to hear a snore as a reply.

A few hours passed as the clock on the stove changed to two thirty. The moon was high in the sky, reflecting the sun’s light down on the country. Small stray clouds drifted past blotting out the moon every now and then. Not a sound echoed through the air, but quiet as the stars in space. Five minutes passed when the ground began to rumble like someone was turning an earthquake on and off. The vibrations caused Kae to awaken. He rubbed his eyes and looked out the window to see it was still night with a full moon until the moon seemed to suddenly disappear.

“Huh? Where’d the moon go?” he thought to himself. Everything just seemed to get even quieter. The light breathing of his sister seemed to be amplified. He looked to see Eevee still lying at the foot of his bed, curled until its tail was touching the tip of its nose. On the dresser was a shoebox filled with straw where Falcon slept, occasionally making cooing sounds. Noticing his small shadow and the pale light, he looked outside once more. The moon was back. Thinking it was no more than a large, thick passing cloud, Kae lied back down under his covers. Just as he closed his eyes, an explosion erupted. The sound was deafening along with the earsplitting screams Ticharia was emitting.

“Mom! Mom!” Ticharia screamed at the top of her lungs. Everything seemed to be shaking wildly. Pictures were falling off the wall; the lamp fell over and rolled off the table. The ceiling fan in their room shook loose and shattered on the floor. The breaking bulbs resembled the sound of a gun going off. Not wasting any more time, Kae grabbed Eevee and leapt out of bed. Without even noticing, he found himself sprinting down the hall, clinching his sister’s wrist who strained to keep up with her brother’s strides. Falcon was tucked under her left arm and seemed to be gasping for air. It wriggled until it was free from its trainer’s grasp.

“Falcon!” Ticharia called in panic as she snatched her hand away from Kae. He turned around to see her running the other way and noticed the hall was ablaze like a burning hell. Ticharia knelt down to grab her Pidgey when a piece of the ceiling collapsed. She held Falcon close to her, too terrified to move from her spot.

“Eevee! Swift!” Kae commanded. The Pokemon opened its mouth, releasing a barrage of light yellow stars. The burning board broke into pieces until only harmless embers fell. Ticharia felt a hand grip her wrist and found herself running behind her brother once again. Kae began to break out in sweat from the adrenaline, exhaustion, and the searing heat. His breath came sharp, his side ached and he thought he couldn’t feel his heart beating.

“Kids!” a faint voice called above the raging flames. Kae squinted, trying to make out the one who was calling. The invisible waves made by the fire made the figure distorted.

“Down here!” Kae responded, still running. The figure became clearer as he saw the silhouette of a nightgown. “Mom!” He called again. When they reached her, no one stopped. They got down the hall and to the stairs. They hastily made their way down, but when they reached the middle, something exploded. The fire extended by them and in a flash, disappeared.

“Mom!” Ticharia scream. Kae was also screaming, and kicking wildly while patting his pants, desperately trying to kill the flames eating at him. His mother grabbed the bottom of his pants and yanked them off, leaving him in his white boxers. She threw the pants over the railing before grabbing her son and pulling him to his feet. He grabbed Ticharia’s hand and followed their mother. The trio got down stairs only to find a wall of flames at the front door. She turned around to see the back door was also engulfed in flames.

“Mom! What are we gonna do!” Kae shouted. Meiko didn’t respond, only clutched their hands a little tighter. Thinking about how they were to escape, a large beam began to break above them. Eevee perked its ears forward, looking up at the ceiling to see the heavy piece of wood about to give way. It squealed, catching Mieko’s attention. Instinctively looking up, she could see the beam falling towards them, showering them with embers as it knocked loose other pieces of wood. She shoved her kids away on impulse, letting the burning boards consume her. The children screamed for their mother although Kae knew she wasn’t coming back. Desperately wanting to get out of the house even more, he took Ticharia’s hand and wandered aimlessly through the house, looking for some means of escape. When they came across the laundry room, Kae remembered they had termites behind the dryer the other summer. He remembered the exterminator coming and getting rid of the pests, but he didn’t remember his mother patching up the weakened piece of wood.

Kae inhaled deeply, breathing in smoke that had accumulated around them. He pulled his crying sister behind him as they entered the untouched laundry room. The beige dryer and washing machine was sitting side-by-side, closed and unused. Different combustible chemicals and high-pressured cans that would explode when touched by the flames littered the shelf above the machines. Washcloths were folded and stacked neatly on a plastic white shelf. A Meowth clock was still ticking, its tail and eyes moving from side to side. It was two forty in the morning. Kae moved over to the dryer, leaving his sister by the door grasping her Pidgey, still crying. He put his hands behind it and began to pull. The dryer didn’t budge.

“Eevee, help,” he said through his gritted teeth. The little brown Pokémon squeeze behind the dryer and began to push, but the dryer still didn’t move. “Tish! Come help!” Ticharia could hear her brother’s call and moved over to him as the flames began to pick at the doorway. Also putting her hands behind the dryer, she began to pull with the other two. The fire slowly entered the doorway as though it was giving them time to do the inevitable. Kae squeezed behind the dryer as much as he could before pushing. Falcon was making strange noises of alarm as the fire progressed into the room from the floor to the ceiling. It tried blowing up a sand-attack, but it failed due to Mieko always keeping the floors clean. SCREECH! The dryer budged, releasing groaning sounds as they pushed it farther away from the wall. It didn’t move anymore, but gave them enough space to squeeze through.

Kae bent down by the wall and elbowed the wood. Pain shot through his arm making it numb and made him realize that the wood was harder than expected. The pain didn’t keep him from hitting the wall until he made a tiny hole. His elbow barely bled, but was extremely sore. Eevee moved in front of him and used a swift attack widening the hole to the extent where they were able to get through to the outside. The flames had consumed most of the room and the Meowth clock was turning black. Ticharia went through first with Falcon, followed by Eevee and then Kae. The crisp night air overpowered the heat of the flames and the two found themselves shivering. Everyone was tired and wanted to rest now that they were outside the house, but Kae didn’t let them or himself. He made the way towards the woods when the ground shook.

He looked behind him to see something towering over them. Kae began to tremble more from fear than from the crisp air. His eyes moved from the shiny light purple, two-toed feet to the top where the shimmering glass appeared small from where he stood. The light the fire gave off couldn’t illuminate the entire beast.

“A P.B.M!” Ticharia had stopped crying to see the giant machine standing in front of them and instantly began to flow with hatred.

“Monster! Monster! You took my mommy away!” she screamed. “Falcon! Gust!” The bird flew off the ground before rapidly flapping its wings. A small tornado formed, drawing in debris and dirt. It connected with the P.B.M, but nothing happened. The tornado just disappeared and the debris dropped to the ground. Then an invisible wave formed out of nowhere and knocked Falcon to the ground. The creature fell unconscious. “Falcon!” Ticharia called in panic, running towards the helpless Pokémon. Kae went to retrieve her. Once she got to the creature, she held it in her arms as Kae wrapped his around her.

“Come on! We gotta get outta here!” he tugged at his sister. He managed to get her onto her feet and the two began to head towards the woods again.

The P.B.M began to move. What supposedly appeared to be an arm was raised. At the end of the arm were three fingers that had in spheres as fingertips, which began to turn inside from sight. Three red tips became visible as the inside of the three black holes began to light up with orange and yellow colors. The children kept running, desperately trying to reach the woods. Just as it was getting ready to fire, a black figure appeared and clamped down on the arm, diverting what were soon recognized to be missiles. The missiles missed the intended targets and went into the mountains in front of the children. They stopped dead in their tracks and looked back.

“Dad!” Kae automatically shouted, knowing it was his father who was controling the P.B.M Mightyena, which was clamped down on the arm of the opponent.

Ronnie was grunting, making the machine bite down harder until the other machine took its free hand and grabbed the top of the P.B.M Mighytena’s muzzle. It began to pry its mouth open so that it could free its other arm. Ronnie strained to hold it down, but it wasn’t enough as the other one managed to work its arm fee and quickly uppercut him. His machine stumbled backwards, but stayed on its feet. He thrust the control sticks forward, which made the machine jump for a tackle, but the opponent easily evaded the attack. Before Ronnie’s machine could land on the ground, he found it stopped in midair.

“Damn, it’s a psychic!” Ronnie put his had on a lever above him and moved it back to until the screen beside it read P.C.P three. The mechanism glowed before it dropped to the ground and moved away from the opponent. Bear was now in full control of the machine. His adversary fired three missiles, but Bear jumped to the left of his opponent, knocking down trees. Wild Pokemon scattered before the machines crushed them. Bear kept dodging the onslaught of missiles even after Ronnie switched it to P.C.P two, which didn’t do any good because the machine wasn’t loaded with any type of weapons. Bear went for a tackle attack as it leapt in the air over three more missiles. The adversary backed up before stopping his mechanism as it did before. Ronnie put the Mightyena back in full control and wondered how long Bear could keep it up.

Kae and Ticharia looked on at the battle and prayed that their father won. Kae looked at his sister who was fixed on the battle and shook her. She looked at him with tired and worried eyes as Kae got to his feet.

“Come on,” he whispered to her as he held out his hand. She took his hand with her left as she held Falcon in the other. Kae held her close as they stayed low and made their way to their house that had finally burned out. He let her hand go before digging through the hot remains, and snatching his hand back a few times from pieces of wood that were still scorching hot. Ticharia kept an eye on the battle.

“Kae, daddy’s losing,” she told him.

“No…he’s not!” he responded, his voice muffled by the wood around him. “He’s gonna win!”

The sound of rapid gunfire reverberated through the air, hitting Ronnie’s mechanism and severely injuring Bear. The Pokémon howled in pain as the machine then was hit with missiles, blasting a hole in the side. Ronnie hung onto the controls as the P.B.M vibrated wildly from the strikes. Bear had been knocked out completely, but Ronnie hadn’t notice. The zinc white P.B.M released a sharp, thin metallic claw that hooked onto the P.B.M Mightyena while it was down. Electricity crackled inside Ronnie’s machine as the little screen on the ceiling in front of him when from P.C.P three to one by itself. He noticed it and moved the lever back and forth, only to see it fail.

Ronnie cursed before he felt the machine move, actually, being lifted off the ground. He tried to make it move himself, to get away from its grasp, but nothing worked. Forced to give into the psychic’s power, he awaited his fate, whatever it might be. As the machine was brought closer, Ronnie began to sweat and growl in disgust. Leaning to the side, he looked back to see Bear floating limply inside the set pod. He turned back around just after the machine stopped. Ronnie still couldn’t see his opponent although they were face to face, but his gut told him that his enemy could see him. Squinting, he could see a faint blue glow in the back of the other P.B.M. A blue laser went through the head of the P.B.M where Ronnie was sitting before erupting into flames and exploding. Twirling shards of metal spun out into the crisp atmosphere. Pieces flew across the yard and into the forest with the thunderous sound ringing throughout the night.

“DADDY!” Ticharia shrieked.

“Get in!” Kae shouted to her as he pulled her inside the little shelter he made for them. Eevee jumped in behind them.

The enemy began to scan the area as if looking for something. Kae held Ticharia close to him, his arms wrapped around her, with his back against a thick piece of burnt wood as he eyes were glued on the outside, waiting for the machine to come get them. Nothing happened. There was only the sound of something similar to a jet flying off into the night. Too afraid to move, Kae asked Eevee to see if the thing had left. The Pokémon peeked outside and nodded to Kae who sighed with relief that the machine was gone. Ticharia sobbed, her face buried into his chest, calling for her mother and father. He laid his cheek on top of her head as his own tears escaped. Since they were safe, he looked back on what happened from beginning to end. Thinking about it made the event worse than when it was all going on. Their life was now blighted with the loss of their parents.

“Everything happened so fast. No mother, no father…what are we gonna do?” Kae thought to himself as his body relaxed and his eyelids became heavy. "I won't let anything happen to my sister."Ticharia had cried herself to sleep, still sniffling and Eevee slept by his side. Although he wanted to stay up to make sure the thing didn’t come back, his body objected to the task and made him fall asleep.

The terror of the night and the night itself finally went away. The sun rose, shining its unsullied light down on the horrific scene of the once beautiful farmland. Diminutive fires still engulfed the blades of grass, trying to keep themselves alive. Black patches of scorched hay and trees could be seen from above. The once woodened farmhouse had been demolished. Thin streams of smoke still coursed from the inside the burnt heap.

Three separate sounds of sirens broke the silence of the damp morning air. A squad of cop cars, accompanied by the fire trucks and ambulances, rushed to the scene. The blue and red lights flashed faintly because of the morning light. The speeding black and white vehicles swerve while hitting the brakes, making the car spin sideways to a stop. The large fire trucks and ambulance that couldn’t do such a maneuver, came to a screeching halt.

The law enforcement swiftly exited their cars, withdrawing their guns and pointing in each direction, hoping to make a nervous spectator jump from his hiding place. They headed around to what use to be the back of the house, keeping an eye out for danger. As they jogged to the back of the pile, the sound of their feet hitting the ground made a long brown ear, that stuck from the pile, twitch. They got to the back and there was nothing to be seen, except for the scorched grass and snapped trees.

“Everything’s clear around here,” one of the officers spoke through a walkie-talkie. “We’re going to check out the barn.”

“Alright, just be careful,” the voice responded.

“Roger,” he replied, putting the radio back on his belt. “Let’s go.” His partner nodded and the two trotted towards the partially torn down barn.

Back in the front, the lieutenant gave the okay for the firefighters to go in and check out the sight. At least five jumped from the red truck, each with their own water Pokémon. Two went to the back of the house, one to the left side, and one to the right. Once again, the sound of feet hitting the ground, made a long brown ear twitch. The firefighter who took the right side of the rubble, stopped.

“Go ahead Quagsire,” he told the azure creature. Its slippery, leather skin shimmered in the morning light as it nodded. It began to slowly move the seared items away in small quantities.

The ear that had been twitching from the sounds of movement finally lifted and pulled itself inside the debris. Eevee awoke, its eyes fluttering, trying to rid itself of the blur. It yawned, only to pause by the noise of something collapsing.

“Whoa, careful there Quagsire.” Eevee peeked from their little sleeping place to see a human, dressed in yellow and black, and a blue Pokemon, who was still taking parts of the trashed house away. Eevee moved back inside and sat down. It looked at its master, his sister, and the Pidgey, huddled together for warmth and protection even in their sleep.

“Hey! We’ve found someone! Hurry! Bring the stretcher!” the Quagsire’s trainer shouted. Curious, Eevee stuck its head back out to see whom they had found, but only to duck back inside to avoid getting struck by the fast moving stretcher. The rattling from the stretcher stopped and voices were heard.

“Who is it?” the paramedic asked, getting closer to the victim they pulled from the house.

“Its Mieko,” the firefighter told him, laying the woman on the stretcher. “That’s Ronnie’s wife.” The paramedics took her away with the guy looking after them in sorrow. He felt a hand on his shoulder, but he didn’t turn around.

“Isamu, did you know that woman?” his co-worker asked, his voice filled with concern for his friend.

“Yeah, both me and Ronnie were pals, but a woman came between us,” he explained, moving forward so that his friend’s hand dropped from his shoulder. “We were still friends though. I just can’t believe something like this could happen to them. Both were my pals.”

Eevee, who had been listening attentively, shifted its ears backward towards the rustling that Kae made. It watched its trainer shift his position as though he would awake, but still was in his slumber. It could hear the workers beginning their search again and wondered what it should do. Looking back and forth, from trainer to the searchers, Eevee inhaled deeply and walked out.

It moved a few inches from the hole, but not to the extent where it wouldn’t be able to jump back in the hole if necessary. The workers didn’t notice the little brown creature. Eevee wasn’t too thrilled to use its voice in the event of an emergency, but what choice did it have. If it didn’t call the people then its trainer and sister might not make it. It called quietly as though it didn’t want the firefighters to hear, but the Quagsire heard the gentle call and turned its head to see the Eevee. The water Pokémon spoke in its language to the Eevee who spoke back.

“What is it Quagsire?” its trainer asked. Saying the first syllable of its name, it moved towards the Eevee who leapt back inside the hole. The firefighter moved behind the light blue Pokemon and stopped at the entrance of the small shelter. Quagsire looked at its trainer with black beady eyes and pointed inside the hole after looking in. The human got on his hands and knees to look at what the Pokemon saw. “Bring the paramedics! There’s two kids over here!”

The paramedics ran towards him with the stretchers as he began to clear away the boards that sheltered the children. The sound of boards being taken away made Kae come out of his sleep. Before he could comprehend what was happening, sunlight flooded the tiny dark area. He quickly shielded his eyes with one hand and held his sister with the other. He could hear someone shout they’re alive and felt hands grabbing at his wrist. Since he still wasn’t able to see clearly, he tugged away from the paramedics. All the jostling awoke his sister who immediately began screaming when she and Kae were separated. Strapped down to different stretchers, they were wheeled to different ambulances. Ticharia screamed for Kae who called her name. The paramedics lifted the stretchers onto the vehicles before closing the doors behind them.

Kae struggled furiously, trying to wriggle his way out of the straps. One of the paramedics held out a pokéball and released an ultramarine violet Pokémon that was the shape of a sphere. Its large white eyes were almost too large for its head and purple smog surrounded it. The creature said something that sounded like ghastly, but Kae wasn’t sure. The paramedic told it to use hypnosis on Kae. The creature’s big eyes glowed blue, sending strange waves over Kae who began to fall asleep once again.

IT is ok but paragragh after each diolog please but so far so good.

Chapter 3: Never a Dull Moment

BEE-BEE-BEE-BEEP! BEE-BEE-BEE-BEEP! A small, black alarm clock went off with flashing red numbers reading 7:15 AM.

“Mm…” Someone groaned, stretching out a hand and smacking the alarm off the stand, while succeeding in turning it off. The hand slid off the stand and hung floppily by the bed above a can of soda. Thick, peacock colored covers were drawn over the head and body of the figure. The curtains were closed, preventing even a speck of light from filtering through. Plastic containers, potato chip bags, cans of noodles, banana peels and other trash littered the floor of the bedroom. The table in the kitchen was also covered with books and papers, some of which appeared to be notes. Cabinets were left open swinging lightly from an occasional wind blowing through the cracks in the window.

Coming from the closet was a shadow, that made its way through the cluttered areas, progressing towards the one who was asleep in bed. It stopped beside the hanging hand and looked. The creature nudged it three times only to be swatted at. There was another groan before the hand withdrew under the cover as the person changed positions. The shadow creature went to the foot of the bed and sat its front paws on the post to watch the person’s movements. When they didn’t move anymore, it bit down on the covers and moved backwards. The comforter slid off easily, but didn’t do much as the person was still asleep. Once their body was revealed, the animal jumped on the bed and walked up to the face of the sleeping one. It stared before releasing a stream of water out of its mouth. The human flailed wildly and yelled with surprise until accidentally falling out of bed.

The curtains were drawn back and the blinds pulled up. Sunlight flooded the room, nearly blinding the person on the floor. The blue haired teenager growled with agitation as he narrowed his eyes at a cerulean colored Pokémon standing next to him with an optimistic expression. One navy blue spike stuck from the left, right side and top of its head, which had a transparent tan fin connected to it. Its mane was a thin white fin that went around its neck, and from there, small navy blue bumps went from its neck to its tail, which resembled that of a dolphin’s.

“Vaporeon,” he muttered. It responded in an urgent tone, gesturing towards the clock on the floor that now read 7:18 A.M. He looked at it and sighed. “No need for a shower.”

Moaning, he pushed himself off the ground while rubbing his head before walking towards the bathroom in his white boxers. Vaporeon followed right behind him, but was locked out of the bathroom. It trotted over to the mirror dresser and pulled one of the bottom drawers open. It searched through the set of folded clothes until it found a white tee shirt. It carefully pulled out the item as not to wrinkle it. The Pokémon then went to the closet and pulled down a navy blue wind suit pants.

In the bathroom, Kae looked into the mirror above the sink at his older self, recalling what happened on that loathsome night. Sighing, he took a towel from the shelf and turned on the water. Ringing the warm water out of the towel, he wiped his face in order to get the sleepiness out of his eyes. He sat the towel on the rack and opened the door to see his clothes covering up Vaporeon’s head who was holding them up to him.

“Don’t try to suck up now,” Kae smirked as he took the clothes. Vaporeon smiled while watching Kae closed the bedroom door behind him.

After getting dressed, Kae called Vaporeon back to its ball, and headed towards the door of the apartment. He opened it only to be startled by a chubby old woman with gray hair and heavy wrinkles.

“Hi there Mrs. Furuichi,” Kae smiled, hiding his annoyance. “My aren’t you bright today.” He pointed at her yellow shirt.

She frowned. “Its Fukuichi you smart ***. Where’s my payment?”

Kae looked at her in an awkward manner. “Payment? What payment?”

“Your rent idiot,” Fukuichi snapped, holding out her hand. “Fork it over.”

“Don’t get your wrinkles in a knot grandma, I’ll get it to you when I come from work,” he told her.

She pointed her finger at him. “You’d better or its eviction for you!” she snapped. She narrowed her eyes at him before walking off. Kae shrugged and went in the opposite direction.

He walked down the crowded streets of Goldenrod to a nearby office building that was under construction. Guys moved around at a quick pace, carrying jackhammers, boards, metal bars and other construction items. The ground was covered in soft brown dirt, which would soon be covered by a thick layer of concrete. Sparks rained down from the levels above from people splitting metal in half. Kae entered through the gate and picked up his pace a little, ducking behind people and poles. He was hopping that the boss didn't see him because it was his fifth time coming in late. Just as he was about to get inside the building, he heard someone shout his name. Kae turned around to see a guy about his age jogging over to him.

“Taylor?” Kae wondered as he watched the guy, his green hair in a ponytail bouncing up and down. His shirt was a sea green that was covered by a dirty blue work jacket and his pants were dark olive.

“What’s up?” Kae greeted him.

“We’re about to be, we’ve got transport duty,” he told him. “Let’s go.” Taylor grabbed Kae by the sleeve and pulled him into the building.

“What’s the rush?” Kae asked, but Taylor didn't hear him.

Inside, people dressed in business attire were going up and down the hall, most of whom were looking down at their papers. The floor was covered with white tile that had scuff marks from the people who didn’t pick up their feet while they walked. The walls were a peach color and had pictures of high-level executives along with the president recieveing awards. A half empty water fountain sat on the corner where the hall divided to the left and a dark brown haired woman was lightly tapping it to get the liquid to come out. Her hands were filled with stacks of paper and fighting to get the machine to work was a hassle. She tried to balance the papers on one arm, but the stack began to lean. The woman stopped them from falling, but her glasses got knocked off at the same time. She sighed helplessly until she felt the weight lift off of her arms.

“Let me help you with those,” Kae told her as he sat the papers on a nearby table. Taylor picked up the woman’s glasses and handed it to her.

“Thanks guys,” she responded, putting her glasses on while straightening her maroon skirt and vest. “How’s your day going?”

“Tammie, its still morning, there is no day yet,” Kae answered, straightening the papers.

“The annual P.B.M tournament is coming up in several months,” Taylor put in. “Would you guys like to go?”

“Oh cool. I’m definitely in!” Tammie exclaimed. “But isn’t it kinda early to be buying tickets?”

“Not to mention they cost a pretty penny,” Kae added.

“Some friends and I opened a bank account and we’re storing some money in there each day so we’ll be able to purchase the tickets. Hopefully, we’ll be able to reserve the best seats before they get sold out,” he explained. “If you guys are joining, then you’ll have to put up some money also.”

“Count me in,” Kae smiled.

“My favorite pilot is Miao Shitaoyama,” Tammie told them. “I think he’s the cutest one and his Arcanine as well.”

“Give me a break, the dude acts like he’s got a mental problem,” Taylor smirked looking at her with amusement. “The best pilot around is Kenta Maru and his Breloom from the Olivine Technology Center. They haven’t lost a battle yet.”

“Neither had Miao,” Tammie retorted, sticking up for her idol. “Miao’ll beat him into the ground any day.”

“Yeah right. Miao wouldn’t be able to touch the guy. Ain’t that right Kae?” Taylor turned to him, but Tammie jumped in front of him, looking up in Kae’s face with a puppy-eyed expression.

“You really don’t think that old Kenta would be able to beat Miao…do you?” Tammie moved her face a little closer and made herself appear as though she was about to cry. Kae blinked, beginning to turn slightly pink and stuttered when trying to come up with an answer.

While they were speaking, a guy walked up behind them, but stopped at a distance. He had black hair, which was slicked back and shiny. He wore a dark gray short sleeve shirt and black khakis with black boots. The color of his eyes was covered by the shades he wore. Not visible from far away was a small round pin that was blended with in with his shirt. The guy watched them argue, but he mainly Kae.

“Sir, I think I found him,” he spoke. “Would you like me to proceed?”

“Yes,” a voice responded. “Do what ever you have to and don’t hesitate to use force.”

“Right.” The guy advanced towards the group and stopped. “Kae Zenner?”

Kae looked behind with a smile still on his face. “Yeah?”

The guy took off his shades, revealing his dark gray eyes, and let them hang on the neck of the shirt. “I need you to come with me.”

“Look.” Kae turned around fully. “If it’s about that rent, I told the old hag I’ll pay after I get off.”

“This isn’t about any rent, this is something bigger that involves you,” he told him.

“Something bigger?” the three wondered and the other two looked at Kae.

“Kae? Did you take out a really big loan or something?” Tammie asked.

“No. I haven’t done anything…not that I know of anyway,” he told them. “Please tell me what this is about. If I’ve done something wrong…”

“Of course you’ve done something wrong,” the guy responded. “On that night you and your sister saw something that you wasn’t supposed to see or see and live to tell about. Of course, if I recall, your sister did die in some kind of accident. At her foster home wasn’t it? An explosion I think it was.”

“Shut your mouth!” Kae snapped. He was frowning and balling his fist as he began to shake. His friends looked at him and Taylor began to turn angry himself.

“Listen here dude, I don’t know who you think you are talking to my pal like that,” Taylor said as he began to move towards him. “But I think you need to watch what you say. You got that?”

Taylor went to touch the man on the shoulder, but in turn only to find himself quickly pinned to the floor with his wrist twisted and his shoulder being pushed down.

“Taylor!” Kae shouted in panic. He quickly turned to Tammie. “Hurry up and call the police!” Tammie nodded and headed down the hall.

“Where do you think you’re going?” the guy put his foot in place of his hand so he was able to withdraw a pokéball and toss it. The sphere opened releasing the white light in front of Tammie. She stopped and quivered at the sight of the large purple, spiked Pokémon. Its tail was thick and appeared to be able to crush every bone in a human’s body. There were two long teeth that stuck out from the bottom and pointed upwards, were shiny, but very lethal. It growled as it watched Tammie with pure hatred and anger.

“Nidoking, make sure she don’t move.” It growled in response and kept a clear eye on her.

Kae, himself, growled at the situation, not knowing what to do. “What do you want?”

“You. You are someone that we need for a very important project,” responded the guy.

“Alright, whatever. Just let my friends go.”

“Fine.” He released Taylor’s arm.

“Tay, hurry up and get over here,” Kae commanded. He managed to get himself off the floor and over by Kae, holding his shoulder.

“I’ve kept my end of the bargain, now its time to keep yours.”

“Sorry, but these kind of deals I really can’t accept.” Kae withdrew his pokéball and tossed it, releasing Vaporeon. “Vaporeon! Hydro pump!”

It inhaled and released a large blast of water towards the Nidoking. Tammie leapt out of the way and the attack collided with the large purple creature.

“Direct hit!” Taylor shouted. The Nidoking roared as it swung its arms apart, releasing a large, dark rainbow colored ball. The attack broke through the hydro pump and caught Vaporeon off guard.

“Vaporeon!” Kae shouted as he watched it get blasted through the wall and into an empty office. Everyone’s eyes widen with horror except the Nidoking’s trainer.

“What was that?” Taylor asked his eyes locked on the Nidoking.

“That was a hidden power attack,” Tammie responded. “I’ve never seen it get that large.”

Kae ran over to Vaporeon, stepping through the hole in the wall. He held the Pokémon in his arms and looked at it in panic. “Vaporeon! Vaporeon!” The creature opened its eyes and spoke weakly, which was enough for him as long as it was alive.

The Nidoking’s trainer stepped beside the hole. “All you had to do was come with me and none of this would’ve happen. So…before things get anymore ugly, I suggest you reconsider.”

Kae looked down at Vaporeon and then at the guy. “You’d think I’d go anywhere with scum like you?”

He chuckled. “In a way, I was hoping you’d say something like that. Nidoking.” The beast growled as it walked towards Kae. Vaporeon strained to stand on its feet and was ready to continue fighting.

“Vaporeon, are you sure about this?” Kae unsurely questioned. It nodded as it made its way towards Nidoking. Kae stepped out of the hole behind Vaporeon. “Tammie, Taylor, go call the police!”

The two turned and ran down the hall. Nidoking was about to attack them, but its trainer said to focus on Kae.

“Vaporeon, use blizzard!” It opened its mouth and set loose snowflakes along with strong, freezing winds. Nidoking held up its arm to block the ice from hitting its face. “Now turn right!” Vaporeon moved the attack to its left and it collided with the stranger, freezing his arms and legs. “Let’s go!” Kae and Vaporeon ran pass him while he was incapacitated.

“Nice try,” the guy chuckled as he broke out of the ice. “Nidoking follow them.”

Kae darted out the door with Vaporeon by his side. The construction workers were still busy doing their jobs, oblivious to what was happening, until the Nidoking came charging out of the building. The workers scattered, dropping their supplies and diving out of the way as not to get trampled. Kae got to the sidewalk, weaving his way through the crowd of people, which began to split behind him, making way for the rampaging Pokémon. He ran into the street, dodging on coming traffic while making cars stop and honk. Nidoking rammed the smaller cars out of the way and dented the larger ones.

Kae changed course, heading into the woods not too far from the street. Vaporeon began to wheeze as it was getting exhausted. He stopped to pick up before continuing to run towards the woods, which he made it to. Although the brush was thick, Kae didn’t stop, knowing the thorns wouldn’t penetrate the Nidoking’s rough hide, but even if it did get stopped, there was always the option of blasting its way through. After about ten minutes of running, what seemed to be an eternity, Kae came into a clearing. There was a large gap in the forest with a wide pond. He sat Vaporeon on the ground and it scampered over to the water. Once it sniffed and tasted the water, it dived in, getting refreshed each time it paddled. Kae watched it and then got an idea that might be able to help them defeat the Nidoking and his trainer.

“Vaporeon,” Kae beckoned it over to him. It swam up to him, but didn’t get out of the water, making Kae kneel down to whisper the plan to it. He took off his shirt and rubbed it down on Vaporeon’s head, almost as if he was scrubbing it. Next, he slipped the shirt back on while Vaporeon dived underwater.

Not long after, Nidoking marched into the opening, leaving a decent trail of flattened trees and shrubs behind it. Its trainer walked up beside it and the two scanned the area looking for any sign of movement.

“Sniff out the Vaporeon.” Nidoking nodded as it moved away from the guy and raised its head up in the air, inhaling deeply, deciphering the different smells until coming across a familiar one. It growled before crossing and flinging its arms apart, letting another hidden power attack go. The ball sped towards a large Oak Tree the stuck out from the rest of the forest. When it connected with target, there was an explosion. Dirt, dust and pieces of wood surrounded the area where the bulky tree once stood. The guy chuckled until Kae leapt out of the cloud of dust.

“Now Vaporeon!” Kae shouted. There was a large splash in the pond and the two turned to see the water rising up, but there wasn’t a Pokémon. Only after the water had fell back into the pond, did the aquatic Pokémon become visible. Its mouth was wide open, aimed towards the large purple beast. It unleashed its second hydro pump, which turned out to be bigger than the first. The water attack pushed Nidoking backwards, but the Pokémon pushed its feet into the ground, preventing itself from going back any farther. Vaporeon kept the attack going, as it seemed they had the upper hand.

“Nidoking, thunderbolt,” the guy simply commanded. In the blink of an eye, a yellow wave of crackling electricity traveled down the hydro pump towards Vaporeon. It stopped the attack, hoping the electricity wouldn’t travel any farther, but that wish was crushed as another explosion erupted. Kae felt as though his heart dropped into his stomach, anxiously waiting for the smoke to clear. The guy looked at Kae who was frozen in one spot.

“I have to commend you on lasting this long against me. The trainers I go up against who’s Pokémon haven’t been trained for a P.B.M really don’t last long. The thing I’m most impressed by is the way you used your shirt to hold Vaporeon’s scent and let the Pokémon hide under the water for an ambush by using its acid armor. Its just that kind of intelligence we need on N.A.F.”

Kae gasped and so did the man when they saw a faint glint. The smoke finally settled and Nidoking began to growl with agitation when it saw Vaporeon still standing. The light blue creature panted despite the fact that it stood behind a glass shield that wouldn’t be visible without some type of light. Although using protect stopped most of the electricity, some of it managed to get through and deal serious damage. Kae felt such a strong sense of relief that his legs almost didn’t support him, but no matter what, he couldn’t give in to his foe.

“Things just keep getting better and better, wouldn’t you agree?” the man laughed as he put on his shades. “Too bad this has to be wrapped up. Nidoking, get the boy.” The beast roared as it charged towards Kae who didn’t know what to do. Vaporeon forced itself to use quick attack to get ahead of Nidoking. While it was charging, it sensed Vaporeon’s attack and used its tail to knock the water Pokémon away. It got closer and closer to Kae until…

Chapter 4: Confusing Times

A ball of fire appeared out of nowhere, knocking Nidoking a good distance from Kae. The fireball stopped in front of Kae and dissipated to reveal a large orange canine with black stripes. It had a large tan mane with cuffs on all fours and a large arched tail to match. Its brilliant black eyes gleamed with brightness and the eagerness for a fight.

“What the hell!” the guy growled and looked towards the woods behind him to see where the sound of a motorcycle engine was coming from. The sound became louder and extremely loud when the cycle landed into view. It was a shimmering red and black sports bike, but Kae’s attention went to the one who was getting off the machine. It was a man, standing about six-foot with dark reddish brown hair. The black coat that had red zigzags going down the sides blocked the shirt he wore and his pants were a dark brown. Under his left arm, he held his helmet, which matched the color of his bike.

“Miao Shitaoyama,” Kae thought as he looked him over.

“Heh, if it isn’t the famous Miao,” the guy sneered. “Come to join the fun?” Miao didn’t respond, instead made eye contact with Arcanine who nodded. Then, he turned towards Kae who stood speechless at the famous person’s appearance.

“Recall your Pokemon,” Miao commanded more than recommended. Kae couldn’t say anything, only hold out his ball and returned the fainted Vaporeon.

“I don’t know what you think you’re doing Miao, but I have a job to complete. Nidoking, change of plans, destroy that mutt.”

“Arcanine, extreme speed.” Nidoking launched its electric attack at the dog that seemed to have disappeared. The thunderbolt was fast, but Arcanine was faster. Everyone, except Miao, looked around for the canine, but it wasn’t anywhere to be seen. It’s like it just vanished. “Flame wheel.”

The fireball that stopped Nidoking before reappeared once again. It resembled more of a fiery speeding comet than a sphere. Nidoking didn’t see it coming and was thrown off its feet when the attack connected with its chest.

“Nidoking! Sandstorm!” its trainer snapped. Nidoking got to its feet and roared as its eyes began to glow white. The wind increased and began to pick up small grains of sand at first before building into a giant twister of dirt heading for Arcanine.

“Dragon rage.” Arcanine looked towards the sky and howled. A waterspout dropped on top of it before moving like a speeding train towards the sand tornado. As the two attacks became close to one another, the wind coming from between them began to drastically intensify. Kae as well as the opponent had to lean forward against the wind to keep from being blown away, but Miao stood as though he was standing in a gentle breeze. The dragon rage and the sandstorm finally met and the force they exerted was overwhelming. A blast of wind shot across the clearing, knocking Kae off his feet.

The attacks tried to push the other back, but neither budged until, amazingly, the waterspout broke through the sand, tearing it apart, causing sand to fly in all directions. They could see Nidoking being spun around in the twister like it weighed no more than a sheet of paper. The dragon rage disappeared and Nidoking fell towards the earth as if shot out of a cannon. It hit the ground, leaving a deep crater under it. Its trainer walked over and returned the Nidoking to its pokéball while cussing up a storm.

“You’re lucky kid that you’re not worth anymore of my time,” he said as he walked into the woods. “Eh Miao, see you in the stadium in two months!”

Kae looked around dumbfounded and watched as Arcanine returned by Miao’s side. They both looked at Kae.

“Um,” Kae began. “Thanks for the help?” Miao didn't respond and only looked. Kae raised an eyebrow in question of his silence, but then felt a blow to the back of his head. He dropped to his knees, seeing the blurred form of Miao and then his Arcanine before everything went black.

------------------ Flashback!-------------------

“Where am I? What happened?” Kae’s voice echoed in the darkness of his mind. “What’s going on? Is it still night? No. I remember seeing light…wasn’t it daylight? I remember. I was knocked out…” He looked at himself. “I’m a kid again? What the world’s going on?”

“Kae? Kae?” another voice called, echoing through the darkness.

“Mom? Mom, is that you?” Kae could see himself running through the darkness.

“Kae?” the voice called again.

“Mom!” he shouted. “What’s that?” He noticed a speck of white in front of him. Kae ran faster, trying to reach it, but seemed to get farther away.

“Kae?” He stretched his hands out towards the speck. “Kae?” The small speck became large and enveloped him in a bright, white light.

“Kae! Kae wake up!” He could hear his sister’s voice and feel her shaking him.

“Ticharia?” Kae whispered as he opened his tired eyes to see the blurry figure, which he recognized as his sister. He blinked a few times until his vision returned to normal and could clearly see his sister who had a worried look on her face.

“I thought you were never going to get up,” she told him, sliding down out of view.

Kae used his sore arms to set himself upright, finding himself on a large bed covered with clean white sheets. His eyes scanned the room with beige colored walls. A small, violet wall clock ticked away. Red-violet chairs sat against the walls under a large television that hung from a pole on the wall. Beside the bed was a brown stand with a phone and a lamp. The thick blue curtains were pulled back, letting sunlight enter the room.

“Where are we?” Kae asked her.

Ticharia giggled. “We’re in a hospital silly.” Kae looked at his little sister and wondered why she was so happy when she saw both of their parents die before their eyes. “Come on, hurry up! Let’s go see mommy!”

“Mom? But mom’s…” Kae looked at his sister oddly, wondering if she’d been driven crazy.

“Sleeping!” she finished his sentence. Ticharia tugged on his arm. “Come on! Come on!”

Not wanting to upset her, he crawled out of bed. He stood still for a moment, making sure that his wobbling legs could support him before following the girl.

The two moved through the partially filled halls of the hospital, passing nurses and doctors who paid them no mind. Ticharia walked faster until she began to skip slightly. Kae looked in the open doors of the rooms they passed. There were either empty beds, people lying in bed asleep or speaking with family and friends. He felt his arm and then himself being pulled to the side until the hallway was gone from sight. He looked to find himself in another room. The first thing his eyes landed on made them grow wide. Kae ran over to the bed and looked. Almost unrecognizable, was their mother, covered in burns. She had a tube running through her arm and up her nose. Her hands were severely burned as well as a good portion of her face. The machine beeped, following the beats of her heart. She was still alive. Kae almost wanted to cry, but no tears escaped him. He shook her lightly, muttering her name. While they were looking at their mother, a doctor entered. He looked at the two children with a sad expression. Knowing it was futile shaking his mother, the doctor let his steps be heard. The children turned and looked at the brown haired doctor, his glasses shinning. His long white lab coat stopped at the knees of his olive green khakis.

“I see you’re up,” he said to the children, but mainly referring to Kae.

“How long will my mother be asleep?” asked Kae directly.

“We don’t know. She’s in a coma,” he replied. “It may be days, weeks, or even months before she gets up.” He walked towards Kae who was looking down at the floor. The man knelt down beside them.

“I know it’s a hard thing for the both of you. I just want you to know I lost both of my parents in a car accident and in an accident at work. You should be lucky, at least one of them is alive.” The doctor sat his hand on Kae's shoulder.

“With my mom like this, its like she’s dead too,” Kae told him, his voice wavering. “I feel alone.”

“Your sister’s here with you. The both of you must look out for one another because there are always going to be hard days.” Ticharia hugged her brother who hugged her back. Kae smiled a little while the doctor chuckled.

“Come on you two, there’s lots that you’ll have to do today.” They looked at him. “Our first stop will be the Pokemon Center right after you get dressed.” The kids nodded before going back to the their room.

----------

The doctor was driving Kae and Ticharia down a busy street. The two looked around, amazed at the sight of tall buildings and shiny glass. They rarely have been inside Olivine City although they lived on the outside of the city in the country. It was a wild experience for the both of them. Obviously knowing the streets and short cuts, they made it to the Pokemon Center. Parking his black car in the lot, the kids got out and followed the doctor towards the glass doors of the center, which automatically opened for them when they stepped up to it. The inside was large and incredibly clean. The floors were a marble white and the cushions of the couches were a light gray. Little potted plants sat beside the couches and the wide counter. On the counter sat a computer facing away from them, by the computer sat a small, sliver bell for service, and two medium sized poke ball lamps sat on the ends of the counter. The doctor was about to tap it when Ticharia tugged on his pants leg.

“Can I ring it?” she asked him, pointing at the bell.

“Sure.” Ticharia smiled as she was lifted off the floor. The doctor held her over the bell that she immediately hit. The bell rang loudly throughout the room. Ticharia liked the sound as she kept hitting it. He quickly sat her down to stop her. Kae could barely see over the counter when the door in the back opened. A pink haired lady in a white nurse outfit stepped up to the counter. Her white cap rested comfortably on her head. Her hair was in two ponytails that were curved back up to her head, giving it a loop. A smile was planted across her face.

“Hi, Doctor Lanson,” she greeted him, bowing somewhat.

“Hello, Nurse Joy,” he smiled back at her. “I’ve come to pick up the children’s Pokemon. I believe they were an Eevee and Pidgey.”

“Oh, yes that’s right.” Nurse Joy looked kindly at the children. She touched a button behind the desk that wasn’t visible to Kae. “Chansey, please bring in those two Pokemon that were brought in earlier. An Eevee and Pidgey.”

They could hear the Pokemon say its name in response before hanging up and in no time, came out with a tray that held two red and white spheres. The large pink Pokemon held the tray up to the nurse, the dark pink tipped feather like things on the side of its head bouncing gently. Nurse Joy took the balls off the tray and handed them to the kids. Ticharia looked the item over.

“What is it?” Ticharia asked bewildered.

“It’s called a pokéball…I’ve seen them on TV. I heard it’s used to catch Pokémon,” Kae explained.

“You two never had a pokéball before?” the doctor curiously asked.

“We lived on a farm and our Pokémon ran free. There wasn’t any need for them,” Kae told him. “I’ve seen how it’s done on TV.” Kae put the ball in his right hand. “Go Eevee!”

He chucked the ball in the air. It opened, releasing a white light that landed on the ground and began to take shape. The light disappeared, revealing his Eevee. The pokéball returned to Kae who almost didn’t catch it. Eevee jumped into Kae’s arms and licked him in his face.

“I’m so glad to see you.” The Eevee kept licking him.

Ticharia looked from them to the ball in her hands. She threw the ball straight up in the air. It opened in the same manner, but took a different shape. When the light disappeared, it revealed her Pidgey.

“Falcon!” She shouted as the bird landed in her arms. She cuddled it and forgot about the pokéball that hit her in the head. Ticharia yelped and rubbed her head hard while the others laughed. Kae asked Nurse Joy if they could keep the balls and she nodded yes. Doctor Lanson told them to head back to the car and that he’ll be right there. Kae and Ticharia left the center, leaving him and Nurse Joy.

“So, are you doing anything tonight?” Lanson asked Nurse Joy.

“Uh no…unless something comes up,” she spoke, beginning to blush.

“How about having dinner with me tonight at seven?”

Nurse Joy giggled as she put her hands on her cheeks. “Sure.” Chansey looked at Nurse Joy oddly and then at Doctor Lanson.

“Great, it’s a date then,” he said, sticking his hands in his pockets while whistling as he walked towards the door.

--------

After running a few more errands and other things, they were being taken to a small place outside of the city on the opposite side. Instead of skyscrapers lining the road, there were now little houses and stores. It was like a major shift in time from the twenty third century to the eighteenth. Kae looked out the window when the car began to slow. He saw a white sign that had the picture of a sun and clouds that looked like it was drawn by kids. Under the sun it read Akako’s Orphanage. Doctor Lanson turned in the driveway and pulled around in a large circle. In the middle of the circle was a fountain that had a Vaporeon statue, which was shooting water up in the air. The building that the doctor parked the car in front of was a three story and extended a good distance. The white building appeared more like an expensive high school than an orphanage.

Standing in front of the doors of the orphanage, were a man and a young girl. The man was dressed in a black suit with a black tie, his shirt under the coat was white and his dress shoes were also black. His hair was a dark violet color that was neatly cut and his eyes were also purple. The woman that stood next to him was a red head and she came to the guy’s shoulder who appeared to be no more than five feet eight. The woman’s eyes were orange and bright. Her tank top was black and fit loosely on her as did her blue jeans. The sneakers were red and orange. They were watching the car pull up to them, but they didn’t move. Lanson told the kids to stay in the car until he came to get them. He got out the car and closed the door before walking up to the two people and shook their hands. Kae, Ticharia and their Pokemon watched from the car.

“Doctor Lanson, great to have you here. At first I thought you wasn’t going to come,” the man in the suit spoke.

“Just had to do a few things, Kilmer,” Lanson said, putting his hands in his pocket.

“Right,” he coughed as he turned to the short woman beside him. “This is Akako Matsumori. She owns this orphanage. She says she’s willing to take the children in. We’ve checked the orphanage records, the records of the staff, how well the place is being kept and etcetera. Everything seems okay.”

“That’s good to hear,” Lanson said to her.

“Thanks,” she replied, her voice soft. She looked over at the car, looking at the two children who were watching them. “I see they have Pokemon.”

“Yeah. Why? You don’t accept Pokemon at your orphanage?” Lanson quickly threw out.

“Oh no…I mean of course we do. Sometimes Pokemon are the only family they have,” Akako mentioned, now looking at the doctor. “Most of the kids in the orphanage have Pokemon too.”

“Good. I suppose a man by the name of Dorou Hagami had called you earlier and explained the situation?” Lanson also added. The woman only nodded.

“The papers have been filled out and their rooms are ready for them,” Kilmer put in. Lanson turned towards the car and waved for the children to come. The door of the car opened and Kae got out first with a new suitcase, followed by his sister with a smaller suitcase and then their Pokemon. Kae closed the door before moving towards the people with his sister hiding behind him. They stopped in front of the three adults.

“Hello. My name’s Akako Matsumori. What’s yours?” she asked them, sitting on her haunches.

“I’m Kae Zenner, this is my sister Ticharia Zenner, my Eevee and her Pidgey named Falcon,” he answered, keeping a straight face.

“Nice to meet you. As you may know, you might be staying here for a while,” she reminded them. Kae nodded. She stood up and thanked the doctor for dropping the children off. Akako ushered them inside.

“I don’t know why Dorou did something like this,” Lanson said to Kilmer.

“Hm? Something like what?”

“He gave the job of building a machine to a man who had a family and nonetheless, he let the man choose what he wanted, how he wanted and where he wanted to do the job!” Lanson snapped.

Kilmer held up his hands. “Hey now, don’t take your anger out on me. You know he was just trying to find a way to save money for other projects. You know he’s cheap.”

“Yeah, and look what his cheapness cost these kids,” he replied, staring after the children who went up the stairs followed by Akako. “Damn him.”

“Calm down. It’s not like you lost your parents like they did.” Kilmer threw his head towards the door.

“Close enough. I tell myself that it was an accident just so I couldn’t feel the pain, but I know their deaths weren’t an accident and he does too.” Lanson walked towards his car with Kilmer watching after him with a remorseful look on his face. He drove his black car around the circle until he got back to the driveway and went down the road.

-------

“This is your room Kae,” Akako pointed towards a blue door. "Older boys stay in here so this is one of the better rooms."

Kae noticed while they were walking down the hall, that the doors were all different colors, from bright to dark. Looking at some of the bright doors gave Kae a headache so he was glad to have a dark colored door. Akako opened the door showing the inside of the room.

He stepped in looking around. The wall color was the same as the door, which was blue. The room was wide so that it could hold three queen sized beds, three closets, and a bathroom. The beds were covered with thick, dark blue, silky sheets and four large pillows two of which were white. Beside each bed was a brown stand that sat against the wall. The stand had drawers, but from where he stood, he couldn’t see how many. There were vents in the floor for either the air or heat. Slanted in the corners, touching two walls was a large mirror dresser that had nine drawers, three on the right, three in the middle and three on the left. Above the mirror on the wall was a white shelf made with metal bars with certain items sitting on it that seemed to belong to other kids.

By the dresser was a wide window with curtains drawn back, letting the sunlight fill the room. There was a screen behind the window, so when the window was opened, no one would fall out although there was a balcony. Kae walked in a little more and noticed another door. He went towards it and looked inside to find out it was the bathroom. The floor had white tiles that made a zigzag pattern. There was a tub, sink, and a toilet that were all white.

“Wow,” Kae thought, still staring around the bathroom.

“You can go ahead and put your bag down by your bed,” the woman said, breaking the silence and making Kae jump. “Which is that one near the door.”

Kae nodded in response. After setting his suitcase down, they went to see the room that Ticharia was going to be staying in. It was exactly the same with the exception of the blue coloring, which was pink, there wasn’t any bathroom, and the room was on another hall.

“The kids are out at recess, would you like to go outside and play?” Akako asked. The two shook their heads, deciding to stay in their rooms on the first day.

The Sylvan Saber
Well...

This fic, so far, is definitely showing potential.

The idea is rather original - I liked the concept of the PokeMon Mechas and the level of control that PokeMon can have on them, and the intriguing combination of manmade weaponry and PokeMon attacks and their different effects in different co-pilot modes. I could imagine this as mecha anime, with all the cliche's of the mecha anime genre - which on the whole is good, because, well, making a monster anime into a mecha anime is a biatch. ^_^

I've noticed a few small errors across the fic, but nothing that really interrupted my reading enjoyment. I'm looking forward to see more of this fic.

Tortoises pwnz you!
This is probably one of the most original fics I've ever read. I did however notice a few gramatical errors here and there, but your talent for writing definitely makes up for it. The whole concept of being able to ride into battle in a giant robot has always intrigued me, and you took it a step further. And the level of control the pokemon can have over the PBM....it's really just an amazing concept. The characters were great too, you could really connect to them on a personal level. Overall, it's just a really great story. Just remember to watch your punctuation and wording. I'll definitely have this fic on my read list.

I'll make note of it guys. *Takes notes*
Thank you very much for the reviews StellarWind and VDknuckles, I'm glad you like it. Even though I probably won't be as nearly good as some of the more famous writers around here, I'll try my best to keep the errors to a minimum.<(^__^)> The next chapter should be up tomorrow.

P.S. I also thank whoever rated the story four stars. I greatly appreciate it. <(^__^)>

Chapter 5: A Change for Better or Worse

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The sound of the second hand moving around the clock echoed throughout the room. Kae groaned, lifting his arm slowly due to the stinging pain that went through it. He opened his eyes only to find the room floating around in a blurry motion. The movement made him sick and he closed his eyes again. His head ached as well and he moved his other arm to set his hand across his eyes. Waiting for a few minutes, he reopened them finding his vision had become better and his dizziness subsiding. The room began to stay in one place and everything was becoming clear. The walls of the room were a light slate gray. Obviously, he wasn’t in his apartment.

Straining to sit up, Kae looked around to see the room was decently wider. The curtains covered the windows beside the bed. The floor was light blue with specks of white and gray. To the left was a tall, russet dresser and a closet. Right beside the bed, a small chair was covered with different clothes than the ones he had on earlier. They were more of uniform type clothing. To the right was a mirror dresser and a doorway that led into the bathroom. Gazing in the mirror, he could see that he was older again and didn’t have any clothing on. He sat his head in his hands as he thought about the flashback he had.

“Why am I having these memories again?” Kae thought to himself, getting aggravated by it. “Now I wonder…where I am.” He looked at the clothes on the chair. “Might as well find out.” Grabbing the clothes off the chair, he began to get dressed.

Once the clothes were on his body, he noticed they were a perfect fit. Kae stared in the mirror, looking himself over. The uniform had a collar that surrounded his neck and the colors were blue, gray, and white. The left half of the coat was gray while the other was blue and a white stripe slanted downward to the middle and then changed directions, creating a less than sign. His pants were blue with white going down the sides. The ends of the pants were tucked into his gray boots.

“This doesn’t look too bad,” he spoke to himself. Kae stuck his hands in his pockets and felt something thin and rectangular. He pulled out the item to see it was a card that had the same colors as his uniform. It had Goldenrod Elite P.B.M Organization with the name Kae Zenner printed just underneath. “Wonder what I need with this?”

He asked out loud whilst walking towards the door. Turning the knob, and then pulling, the door opened, which led him into a hallway. Kae looked up and down the corridor to see that no one was there. After walking all the way out, he closed the door behind him, which locked automatically. Seeing as there was an elevator near, Kae decided to use it. As he was walking, he noticed four other doors like his, which he presumed was other living quarters also.

Beside the doors of the elevator, there was a card slot. Kae took out his new card and swiped it. The little machine beeped and the double doors of the elevator opened. He stepped in and looked at the number of levels they had. There were ten levels and he pressed the button for floor one, but B1 was highlighted. He pressed the level one button a couple of times, but it only highlighted B1. Shrugging at the situation, he decided to let the elevator take him wherever it was to take him. If it was an enemy base, then he’d just have to try any fight them off with Vaporeon.

“Vaporeon!” Kae just remembered as he searched his pockets, but there wasn’t any sign of a ball. He desperately went back to punching the buttons, but nothing worked. Anxiety began to build as he remembered what happened to his Pokémon. The elevator passed levels three, two and one before slowing to a halt at B1. The doors opened and Kae hid against the wall, peeking around the corner. People were working, some who were wearing the same uniform he was. Kae eased his way out, trying to walk as if he knew where he was going.

Initially, when Kae stepped out of the elevator he didn’t pay attention to what was around him until he took the time to stop and examine the place. There were endless rows of P.B.Ms, each one different than the first. Kae’s mouth dropped open at the sight.

“Hey you!” a voice alluded to Kae. He looked behind him to see a guy marching up to him who was wearing the same uniform as him, with the addition of medals showing his rank. The man had his indigo colored hair cut in the shape of a small box. In his hand, he held a board with papers clipped to it. Kae turned around fully to meet the guy.

“Why are you standing around with your face hanging out private?” Kae stuttered to answer the first lieutenant who mocked him with his inability to speak. “State your name private.”

“Kae Zenner.”

“Zenner, Zenner,” the lieutenant muttered as he flipped through the papers, looking for Kae’s name. “Well, Mr. Zenner, its seems that you have a meeting with Major Sevastian Kun.”

“Where do I go to meet him?” The lieutenant gave him directions and Kae saluted him before walking off. While he moved down the aisle, Kae looked some of the machines over as he passed. The one he was most impressed with was the machine that resembled an Onix. Kae wondered how an actual Onix was going to fit inside of the P.B.M. Looking ahead, he noticed a metal staircase leading up to a room surrounded by glass walls in the shape of a hexagon. He carefully ascended the stairs glancing every now and then at the people below.

When he got to the door, he saw a slightly chubby man talking on the phone while writing something on plain paper. Tapping lightly on the door caught the man’s attention. Kun motioned to him to step inside. Kae stepped inside, and balked. He examined the chubby fellow to notice that he wasn’t dressed like he thought a major should be. Kun had on a white tee shirt that read, “Better Looking Than the Second and Third Guy” in red letters. From what Kae could see, he appeared to be wearing dark purple sweatpants. His hair was slightly gray, and bushy as well as his mustache. After saying bye to the person on the other side of the phone, the major hung up and then stared at Kae.

“Well…come on over,” Kun told him. “Take a seat.” He directed with his black pen. Kae casually walked over to one of the chairs that resided in front of the desk before sitting down. Kun grinned innocently like a ten-year-old child who was trying to show modesty. “Finally get to meet Kae Zenner.” He held out his hand and Kae shook it. “I’m Major Sevastian Kun or Major Kun to others.”

“Uh, nice to meet you sir,” he replied, setting back in the chair. “Can we get straight to the point and explain why people are trying to kill me…or abduct me, which it seems you succeeded in doing? And what is this N.A.F some stranger was talking about?”

“N.A.F stands for Neo Apostasy Federation. You’re very important to the both of us. I wanted you alive and they wanted you dead. Why? I don’t really know. I’d say you’re better off here than there anyway,” Kun answered.

“Why is that?” Kae wondered.

“For one, you’re still in Goldenrod City. If the N.A.F got to you before we did, then you’d probably be out of this region and number two, they’d probably kill you afterwards anyway after they’ve gotten what they want out of you,” he explained.

“What do I have that’s so important to the both of you?”

“You’re the son of the man who built the first Pokémon Battle Mechanism,” he replied.

“And? What about my father?”

“You know how fathers usually let their sons come and watch them work on cars don’t you?” Kun paused, letting Kae take it in because he appeared to be puzzled. “So they can learn something.”

Kae began to smile a bit. “You think I know some hidden secrets about the P.B.M?” Kun nodded. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t know anything.”

Kun’s smile began to disappear. “What do you mean you don’t know anything? Roni didn’t let you…help build the machine?”

“Help? I didn’t even know he had something like that under our house,” he recalled. “The only way we found out about it is when he gave us a tour of it after he was done. That was the same night I lost him and my mother.” There was silence between the two. The smiles on their faces had turned straight.

“Ah well,” Kun said as he lied back in his leather chair. “I’m really sorry about what happened to you. Maybe you would like to join us, the Goldenrod Elites?”

“Nah, I don’t think so.” Kae stood up. “I just want a normal life and not be around things that bring back bad memories. I’ll just head back to my apartment if you don’t mind.”

“Huh-uh.” Kun shook his head. Kae looked at him. “You’ve been evicted.”

“Evicted?” Kae’s face dropped as he stared with disbelief.

“The old woman said that you were supposed to pay rent after you got off your job and that time is pass due,” Kun told him. “Not only that, you’ve been fired also.”

“Dammit,” Kae muttered, his teeth locked on his thumbnail.

“Like I said, you can work here. You get paid, free room and board…”

“Look, you just don’t understand!” Kae snapped. “I don’t want to be anywhere near those things!”

Kun held up his hands to tell Kae to settle down. “I understand you’re angry about what happened when you were eight, but that was ten years ago. I bet you dream about that ordeal every night.”

“It started just yesterday. I can’t get rid of those memories for nothing,” Kae lowered his voice.

“Maybe it’s trying to tell you that you should track down the person responsible for killing your father and sister,” Kun hypothesized.

Kae looked at him even harder. “No one killed by sister. It was an accident…that’s what the police report said. Something about a gas leakage or something.”

“Wrong. I’ll show you why you’re wrong, only if you agree to join us.”

Kae contemplated on it. He wondered whether he should join them to see the evidence they had to show his sister’s death wasn’t an accident and if it wasn’t, to track down the ones responsible. Of course this deal had its down side. The man could be lying right to his face about everything, all the way down to being fired from his job. Was he still even in Goldenrod? Kae hadn’t look outside to see if it was the same city. All of the big questions he had begun to divide into smaller ones, making his final decision a tough one.

“What about the one that knocked me out?”

“Who? Miao?” Kun didn’t seem to surprise to hear Kae say Miao attacked him, but instead chuckled as not to burst out laughing. “Don’t worry about him. He knocked out and abducted about half of the staff out there with the same Arcanine. You can ask them. Miao believes in getting the job done quick and getting it right, especially when it comes to retrieving people.” Kun watched as Kae got an awkward expression on his face. “He’s been a tough guy when he first arrived here and I think he’s soften up, but he tries not to show it.”

“Soften up! You call getting nailed in the back of the head, soft?” Kae threw out.

“Hey, look on the bright side…could’ve let the other guy kill you,” Kun bantered.

Kae acquiesced and looked out at the people fixing up the P.B.Ms “I’ll join, but under two conditions.” Kun leaned forward and listened to him. “One, I don’t have to wear this uniform all the time and can wear whatever clothes I want. Two, I get to leave this place of my own freewill to go enjoy the outside. I don’t like to be cooped up in one place too long. “

Kun nodded in agreement. “You could do that stuff even if you didn’t ask. Now, there’s just one thing I need you to agree to.” Kae had a serious expression as he awaited the stipulation. “I have to ask that you don’t betray us. No one likes a traitor and if you do betray us, there will be dire concequences. Do you accept this condition?”

“Yes sir,” Kae said as he saluted.

“Then welcome to the Goldenrod Elite P.B.M Organization Private Zenner.” Kun stood up and saluted Kae also. “Come on in.” Kae wondered what Major Kun was talking about until he heard the sounds of the people working pour in, signaling that the door behind him had opened. Kae’s mouth dropped open when he saw who stepped through the door. “Ah Miao. Just in time to meet Kae Zenner again. He’s one of us now.” Miao didn’t respond, nor glance at Kae.

“Sir, where’s my Vaporeon?” Kae asked.

“In our healing center on the second floor. Miao will escort you there since he’ll be your teacher on how to pilot P.B.Ms, training and your tour guide around the place.”

“WHAT!” the two said in unison before finally looking at one another and making eye contact.

Kun began to grin again. “You two get along now.” He stood up and turned his back to them so he could talk on the phone. That’s when Kae noticed what the back of Kun’s shirt said, “Because I’m Number 1.” He heard the door open and watched as Miao left. Although he didn’t like the guy, Kae had no choice except to do what the major said.

Miao kept his regular walking pace with a serious look on face, followed by Kae who kept his distance, not wanting to get near a guy who has a habit of knocking people out. Miao got to the elevator and ran his card. The double doors opened and he stepped in. Kae picked up his pace and stepped in just before the door closed. The button that had the number two on it was already highlighted. Kae stayed close to the opposite wall from Miao while keeping an eye on him. The elevator came to a stop and the doors slid open. Waiting until Miao had gotten out of the elevator, Kae followed behind him.

They moved down the hall and Kae noticed that the walls were made of glass, allowing him to peer into the other rooms. There were numerous amounts of shelves that held people’s pokéball and some that probably contained powerful Pokémon. Finally arriving at the door, Miao ran his card through the slot, giving the doors the command to open. Kae walked in while Miao stayed at the door and waited for him to come back. The floor he stepped on resembled clean ice, as were the interior walls. Scanning the area, Kae’s eyes landed on a pad by a conveyor belt. He made his way over and read the screen, which told him to slide his card through. After completing that, a thin metallic claw stretched over to one of the pokéballs that were on a far away shelf. The machine picked up one of the spheres and sat it on the conveyor belt since it couldn’t stretch over to Kae. The belt turned on and the ball advanced towards him. He grabbed the ball and the belt cut off.

Without hesitating, he released whatever was inside, hopefully his Vaporeon. The white light exited the ball and landed on the floor, taking the form of the blue aquatic Pokémon from earlier. It shook its head and yawned before walking up to Kae. He patted it, happy to see his friend was okay and fully healed. Remembering that he left Miao waiting at the door, he hurriedly returned Vaporeon to its ball and jogged over to the door. Miao saw Kae coming and got a head start towards the elevator. In order to get out, Kae had to run his card through another slot next to the door. Once opened, he ran to catch up with Miao who’d gotten on the elevator. The doors began to shut, the gap getting smaller. Kae dived in just as it closed fully.

He looked up Miao who completely ignored him. "I’ve got long days ahead of me.” Sighing, Kae stood on his feet and went to stand in the corner of the elevator, away from Miao.

Tortoises pwnz you!
Great chapter. It's more of a filler chapter compared to the others, but still, it kept my attention. And trust me, if you can keep my attention long enough to read an entire chapter without skipping parts, you're doing well. Anyways, as for an in depth review, I felt that some parts of the chapter were a bit rushed. For example, I felt that Kae's decision to become part of the Goldenrod Elite went by too quickly. Especially when he just had a revelation about his sisters death. Regardless, it was a great chapter. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the reviews ya'll and I wrote down what you said about it being rushed so hopefully, my others stories won't turn out quite so bad. <(^_^)> I'm kind of horrible when it comes to drama and humor, so you can probably expect some awkward actions from my characters...

Gundam influence? Honestly, I've only watched two to three episodes and those were somewhere in the middle. I wanted to watch everything, but I could never seem to catch it when it came on. Ah well...thanks for the review anyway. <(^_^)>

Chapter 6: Strenuous Training and the Video

Once again, the clock's ticking echoed throughout the pitch-black room. No other sound was present except Kae’s light snore. The clock was glowing a lime green color so one would be able to tell the time in the dark. The long hand on the clock was stationed at a minute before twelve while the short hand was just about to land on the four. When the long hand shifted, the phone rang, shattering the silence. It continued to ring until it almost drove Kae crazy.

Groaning, Kae crawled over to the left side of the bed and reached for the phone. “Hello?” he sleepily answered after picking it up and putting the phone to his ear.

“What the hell took you so long to answer the phone!” a voice boomed over the other side. Kae snatched the phone away from his ear and raised an eyebrow. He looked glanced at the clock that read 4:04 A.M.

“Maybe because its four o’clock in the morning?” he quipped, shifting his mouth to the side while keeping the phone away from his ear.

“Don’t give me that crap!” Miao snapped. “Get down to level four! NOW!” After giving his abrasive command, he slammed the phone down on the hook. Kae looked at the phone before hanging up. He fell backwards, letting his head land on the pillow while groaning.

“Maybe I should’ve said no,” he muttered looking up at the hidden ceiling.

At around 4:30, Kae stepped off the elevator onto the fourth floor, yawning and slouching. His eyes moved from side to side, looking at the closed doors and the different corridors. Stretching his arms and yawning, Kae walked a ways from the elevator door and then stopped, realizing he didn’t know where to go.

“All that shouting…he didn’t even tell me where to meet him,” he mumbled to himself. He continued to move down the hall and decided to pick a room to go into. He withdrew his card and swiped it the card slot that was next to double glass doors. The small machine beeped and opened the glass doors. He entered and stopped as the doors closed behind him. Just then, he felt something grab the back of his shirt and pull him to the side. He looked behind him to see the back of Miao’s head. The two stopped and Miao shoved Kae forward, making him stumbled, but Kae managed to keep his balance.

“You don’t have to be so violent.” Kae told him, straighting his sweatshirt. Miao just glared at him as he walked ahead. Shrugging, Kae followed behind, silently mocking the way Miao walked in exaggeration. He looked around the room, looking at all of the barbells, weights, mats; mainly the things to get a person into tip top shape. In the back of the room, the blinds were closed over large windows to block the light even though it was still dark out.

“In order to pilot a P.B.M, there is a significant amount of strength needed from both human and Pokémon,” Miao explained, coming to a halt.

“I could’ve guessed,” Kae replied, recalling how muscular his father was.

“For the rest of the month, you’ll be working out in here. I’ll be waking you up various times to prepare you in the event of an emergency,” Miao continued, ignoring Kae’s earlier statement. Kae, who had stepped on one of the treadmills just because it was there, partially listened as his eyes were halfway closed and his head drooping. Miao punched a couple of buttons on the pad that made the machine start. All the while, Kae was unaware to what happening because he was still sleepy. The treadmill made a whirring sound as the belt began to move. Not paying attention to what was happening, Kae’s body began to lean forward. He fell on the belt and before he could react, the machine slung him off. He slid across the glossy floor and into a near by wall. Kae rubbed a red spot on his face that burned from hitting the belt.

Later, he was in a white guard shirt and sweat pants, running hard on the treadmill. The clock went from one minute to fifty-nine seconds, fifty-eight, and so on. Sweat ran heavily down Kae’s head and onto his shirt, creating large wet spots. Miao stood to the side, watching him intently while keeping track of the time.

“Can’t I…take…a break?” Kae panted and tripping almost every five seconds.

“You have thirty-three seconds left. If you don’t make it, then you have to start over from twenty minutes,” Miao threatened. The clock just hit seventeen seconds.

“Twenty minutes!” Kae shouted and began to pick of his pace. Fourteen…thirteen…twelve…the clock counted. He groaned and looked away from it, trying to keep up. Five…four…three… He was on his last lap when the machine finally beeped. Kae stopped running, but the belt kept going since he was intended to do the cool down. Once again, it threw his onto the floor, but he didn’t slide as far as before. Kae didn’t even make an attempt to get up, but lied on the cool floor, catching his breath.

“I hope this is all!” Kae shouted in his head. “I’ve done push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, bench presses, jumping jacks, and running on the treadmill without a single break! Ugh…I think I’m gonna hurl.”

“Get up!” Miao commanded, kicking Kae in the thigh. Pain shot through his leg, which maked him dart up to a sitting position and hold the spot where he got hit.

“What’s your problem?” Kae spoke sharply.

“Get a move on!” Miao ordered again before leaving Kae on the floor. He wasn’t sure if he was able to get up owing to the fact all his muscles were aching. Placing his hands on the floor, Kae pushed himself up, gritting his teeth from the pain. It was a simple yet daunting task. Steadying himself when he got on his feet, Kae slogged his way down to the end of the room where they was another hall. To his left was an open door and Miao was in the room, which was the size of an interrogation room. In front of Miao was a keyboard covered with buttons and switches plus a screen revealing him the settings. A window was above the board, showing what was behind the wall in the other half of the room. The second room was pure white and was in the form of a large grid.

“What is this now?” Kae addressed him, looking at the panel.

“This is the Gravity Chamber. It’s used for training your Pokémon so they’d be ready to pilot a P.B.M,” Miao clarified. Kae kept quiet and sat down in a near by chair so he could massage his leg. “Release your Pokémon.” He dug in his pocket and pulled out the red and white sphere that was the same one Nurse Joy gave him some years ago.

“Come on out buddy,” Kae said as the ball opened. The white light landed on the floor and morphed into his Vaporeon, which looked around curiously.

“Instruct it to go inside the chamber,” Miao told him. Kae motioned towards the room and Vaporeon unsurely obeyed. It walked inside of the chamber as Kae got up and stood beside Miao to see what was going to happen. Just after Miao flipped a switch there was a humming sound going through the ceiling, then walls and finally the floor. The door closed, trapping the Pokémon in the separate area. The room Vaporeon was in transformed, at least from its point of view. It now found itself in the forest, surrounded by thick brush and trees. The trees were tall and the grass was almost knee high. It called out, hoping for a response, from its trainer mainly.

Kae watched intently as his Vaporeon acted as though it was lost. From where Kae stood, the room was just like it had been when he came in. “What’s going on? What’s wrong with Vaporeon?”

“Its a hologram that we use for training,” he explained. “Look here.” Kae looked at the screen that was on the panel and saw the world Vaporeon was in.

“Okay great. So you’re teaching it how to go on a safari?” Kae bemused.

“Shut the hell up and watch,” Miao told him. Kae quieted down and kept watch as Miao typed something on the keyboard.

While Vaporeon was walking through the wilderness, a thunderbolt appeared out of nowhere heading straight for it. It used quick attack to dodge the electricity, but just barely. The aquatic Pokémon frantically looked around until its eyes fell on something it hoped not to see. Stepping clear of the trees appeared a Nidoking like the one it encountered earlier. Vaporeon began to tremble as the large creature advanced towards it.

“Ridiculous," Miao said. "Its backing down, when it clearly has the advantage. Pathetic.”

Kae growled and shot Miao a nasty glance, which he paid no attention to. “I would be too after what happened yesterday!” Kae turned back to the screen clenched his fists.

“In order to battle using a P.B.M, you have to over come your silly fears. Both Pokémon and trainer! Or else won't survive in a war,” Miao informed. Kae heard him and wished he were wrong, but knew he that Miao was right. He watched his Vaporeon who was frozen by fear and trembled more violently the closer the Nidoking came. Kae grew restless.

“Isn’t there a way I can contact it in there?” Kae asked him and got handed a small radio. He pressed the button in and spoke. “Vaporeon, can you hear me buddy?” Vaporeon looked around, searching for the origin of the voice without any luck. “Listen, this is a training program. That Nidoking is for training purposes. It’s just a computer program. It’s not the real thing! So go ahead and beat its head in!” Vaporeon nodded and got ready to battle. Kae sat the radio down and watched closely.

The Nidoking roared as it released its large hidden power attack that sped towards Vaporeon like a comet. Vaporeon used quick attack to evade it, but Nidoking was charging for it. The large purple beast had amazing speed for something so large. It twisted, swinging its bone crushing tail towards the water Pokémon. Leaping in the air, Vaporeon managed to dodge again, but not being able to maneuver in midair, it was knocked out of the air by one of its huge paws. Vaporeon slammed into the ground. It looked up to see the Nidoking coming in for a body slam. Just as the beast came down, Vaporeon rolled itself into a ball and rolled out of the way in time.

Nidoking slammed into the ground, making it shake violently. It made the miss into an earthquake attack, making a combo. Vaporeon had trouble standing because the ground shook violently. Nidoking rushed Vaporeon again while the earthquake was still in effect. Since it couldn’t move very well, Vaporeon released a hydro pump at the ground. The force launched it in the air above its opponent who abruptly stopped and released another electric attack. Vaporeon stopped its hydro pump and quickly put up a sparkling golden shield. The lightning connected with barrier, but the force exerted was too much and the golden glass shattered. The thunderbolt connected with its intended target and propelled Vaporeon higher into the air until it ceased.

“Vaporeon!” Kae called when it crashed into the ground. It strained to get up and coughed as the digital dust got into its lungs. Another roared erupted and it glanced only to see solid purple tail already upon it. The little animal howled in pain as it felt the force of Nidoking’s tail. Vaporeon was knocked through a tree and hit another one, splitting it.

“It's had enough,” Kae said, closing his eyes.

“The battle’s not over yet,” Miao told him.

“Yes…it is. For Vaporeon,” Kae responded. “Please turn it off.” Miao didn’t move, only continued to watch the battle. Kae looked at him until he heard Vaporeon scream in pain again…and again…and again. Kae remembered the screaming of his sister, the explosion, and the fire. “Vaporeon!” Kae ran around Miao and headed towards the door of the chamber.

“What the hell are you doing!” Miao snapped. “Don’t open the door!” He was too late as Kae had already grabbed the handle and yanked it open. The computer cut off as a deafening sound erupted while Kae and Miao were blown backwards. Miao went through the window behind him and Kae was blown through the door, but both flew into the corridor. Vaporeon was spun around in the chamber like a rag doll trapped inside a whirlwind. There was a power surge making the lights flash. A few bulbs exploded, but the lights managed to keep themselves on. The event lasted no longer than a minute.

Kae groaned and coughed as he gradually pushed his aching body off the floor. He looked around to see the hall filled with smoke. His head was throbbing and he lowered it in his hands as he took deep breaths. Once the throbbing began to ease, Kae got to his feet. He kept his hand against the wall for support until he was snatched away from it. He soon found himself back on the floor again with a jarring pain on the side of his face where a red print was implanted on his cheek in the shape of a large fist.

“Dammit! You ***!” Miao shouted at him with rage. There was a slight cut on the side of his face from the glass he went through. “I TOLD YOU NOT TO OPEN THE DAMN DOOR!”

“You’re the ***!” Kae retorted, straining to get to his feet again. “I told you to stop the battle!” Kae coughed a little before continuing. “You could’ve told me the chamber would explode!”

“It wouldn’t have if you didn’t open the damn door!” Miao hotly spat. “The gravity control was on! When the gravity control’s on, that makes pressure build up in the chamber. You’d better be glad that it was on low!”

After Miao had finished his sentence, Kae remembered Vaporeon and ran to his friend’s aid. Members of the Goldenrod Elite entered the corridor followed by Major Kun who shoved his way through. He stood beside Miao who was enraged, but tried to hide it when the Major looked at him. Kae found Vaporeon lying on the panel, bruised with severe cuts. He put his hand on it, but the creature was so tender that it yelped in agony. Kae moved his hand away.

“I’m sorry buddy,” he whispered, resting his hand on the panel. He heard the glass crunching behind him.

“Let me guess,” Kun plainly began, sounding neither amused nor displeased. “You opened the chamber?” Kae didn’t respond, just turned his head somewhat. He held up his ball and recalled Vaporeon. “Hand me the ball. Your Vaporeon’s going to need special care.” Kae tossed him the sphere without looking at him. Kun caught it and motioned one of his men by him. He gave the man an order before handing him the ball. The guy left out of the room in a hurry.

“No reason to sit here and mope over spilt milk. This chamber will be fixed in no time. As for you, you’re going to need your rest. It’s eight o’clock in the morning and I know kids like you like to sleep late. Head up to your quarters and I’ll send the doctor up to have a look at ya.”

Kae slowly nodded before trudging out of the room pass Miao and by the other members. Kun sighed and rubbed his bushy hair. “Ho boy. This is going to be a long month.”

Afterward, Kae was in the shower with his muscles still rigid from the training. The warm water shot out of the nozzle onto Kae’s head and body, soothing him. He stared at the azure titled wall, ruminated over the incident at the Gravity Chamber. The sound of when the door was opened was just like the sound of the explosion when their home got attacked. Kae was lamenting at the thought as he exhaled and turned the shower off. He grabbed large towel from the rack and stepped onto a mat that soaked up the excess water that drained off him.

Once dry, he pulled his lamp black khaki pants up to his waist and buttoned it. Leaving the towel on his head, he moved out of the bathroom. As he did, there was a knock at the door along with the sound of a tiff outside. Kae opened the door only to have a lady barge inside, wearing a white lab coat and a burlywood romper. Her thistle colored hair was braided back into a circular bun being held by a violet red ribbon and her magenta eyes filled with aggravation. She clutched a sienna case, which probably contained most of her medical supplies. Following in behind her was Kun who was carrying on like a little child.

“But what about Dr. Stevenson or Dr. Morimoto?” Kun pleaded.

“Doctor Stevenson had an accident at work and Doctor Morimoto, he’s on trial about his high school transcript,” the woman responded in exasperation.

“How about Matt or Duke?” Kun beseeched.

“Doctor Matt is a pediatrician and Duke is an anesthesiologist,” she said, looking at him with disbelief.

“There has to be someone…”

The doctor interrupted him. “I am someone. I am here. I’m a doctor. I showed you all of my medical degrees and they decided I was the best choice. If you don’t like that, I can call the Lieutenant Colonel and tell him that…”

“The Lieutenant Colonel sent you?” Kun asked quietly.

“Yes,” the woman nodded with relief, throwing her head forward as if she was jerked backwards.

The major looked at Kae. “Um, I’ll meet you later in the Meeting Room A on level 3. Eighteen hundred hours.” Kae said okay even though he didn’t know what eighteen hundred hours was. Kun backed out of the room and headed down the hall. The woman sighed with relief before turning to Kae who was still wondering what was going on.

“Sorry about that,” she told him. “My name’s Doctor Kana Himoru. I was called in to check on you because of some kind of accident?”

“Oh yeah. Nothing’s broken, just a little sore,” he chuckled.

“Well, let’s just check to make sure. You don’t wanna know what kind of major medical problems may result from sore muscles,” she smirked. “It may cost you an arm and leg.” He smiled while the woman took out her stethoscope. Placing the ear tips in her ears, she lightly tapped the circular part to make sure it was in working condition before placing the chest piece on Kae’s torso. A chill shot through his body when he felt the coldness of the metal and flinched. After hearing his heartbeat and checking his pulse, she ran her hands his muscles to find them tightened.

“Well? Do I need to get something amputated?” Kae smirked.

“Nope. All you need are some hot patches so your muscles can loosen up and maybe a couple of pain relievers if you can’t take the pain,” she instructed. Kana touched the side of Kae’s face and turned it slowly to the side. The spot where Miao punched him had swelled into a large purple hump. “And an ice pack for this bruise the size of a baseball. The application of an ice pack off and on for the first twenty-four hours will reduce further bruising and swelling. After twenty-four hours, a hot pack to the area will help the bruise heal more quickly.”

“Thanks a lot,” Kae said grateful. “By the way, why was Major Kun fussing earlier?”

The woman placed her stethoscope back in her case and locked it. She stood up, looked at Kae and smiled innocently. “Because he’s a pig.” Doctor Kana walked to through the door and into the hall. Kae just realized something and ran to the door behind her.

“Hey! One more thing!” he called. The woman stopped and looked back at him. “When’s eighteen hundred hours?”

She gave him an awkward look. “You don’t know military time?”

“No,” he chuckled nervously and rubbed the back of his head. “I just started working here and I really never needed the use of military hours.”

“That’s six o’clock this afternoon,” she answered. He thanked her once again and the woman went down the hall towards the elevator. Kae closed the door behind him.

Around twelve, Kae was walking down the streets of Goldenrod with a patch over the bruise. The weather was warm, but with all the cars going up and down the street releasing carbon monoxide into the air that felt hot. Occasional winds blew through, cooling down the ones who were sweating. Kae waited at a stoplight until the little light box gave the okay before walking across. He put his hands in his pockets on his indigo coat as his white tee shirt fluttered in the wind.

Walking three more blocks, Kae made his way into a large brick building, which was nearly as large, if not larger, than their own. The front was covered with windows, equally spaced apart; some with the curtain drawn and some open, letting the sunlight along with the wind enter. The sign sitting over the shelter above the double doors read Goldenrod City Hospital. Kae entered into the lobby where a guy sat in a leather chair reading the newspaper. With three other single chairs and four couches made a rectangle. In the middle was a small wooden table with stacked magazines and books neatly laid out.

The walls were a floral white and the carpet was light slate gray with the pattern of diamonds, which were bisque. Kae sauntered up to a large cornsilk desk with a titanium white top. Behind the desk was a woman dressed in a nurse’s attire, typing on the computer.

“Hi Kae,” she greeted before turning away from the computer and looking at him.

“Hey Bianca. Any changes yet?” he asked her.

She shook her head, her ruby red bangs swinging from side to side. “No, nothing, but her heart is still beating strong.” He left the desk and ambled down the hall to the elevator, which was opened as someone had just stepped off. There was a man that held the door for him and Kae got on, pressing the button labeled six when he was inside. He looked the doctor over out the corner of his eye to notice who it was, despite the specks of gray in his hair.

Kae smiled. “Hey Doctor Lanson, what are you doing here?”

“Long time no see Kae,” he replied glancing over at him. “I’m going to check on some of my patients. You come to see your mother?”

“Yeah.” Kae heaved a sigh.

“What happened to your face?” Dr. Lanson patted his own cheek.

“Oh, a little accident at work…nothing major.”

“Want me to take a look at it?” Dr. Lanson reached for him, but Kae held up his hands.

“No, no. They had a doctor to look at me already,” Kae quickly responded. DING! The elevator’s doors opened, letting the two out into the hall that had the same wall and carpet coloring as the lobby. They said bye to one another as they took separate directions down the hall.

The room Kae entered brought back memories of when he and sister arrived here after the destruction of their home. Lying in the bed was a woman with half of her face gruesomely scorched. The thin white sheets she lied under hid the rest of her burnt body from view. Only her mismatched arms lied atop the covers. Even with her head covered by a cream colored cap, one could still tell most of her hair was missing. The machine beside the bed with a dark green screen beeped, following the beats of her heart.

Kae took a seat on the right side in a cushioned, light green rocking chair that sat next to the wide windows of the room. He looked the woman over, mainly at the third degree burns that won’t go away. He exhaled, turning to the window to see people moving towards their destination and various bird Pokémon fly pass going on about their business. It felt as though the world should’ve stop and wait on them, but it kept moving without notice or remorse.

“I don’t know if what I did was right mom,” Kae spoke, even though he knew she wasn’t going to respond. “Should I have joined these people…just to find out if what this guy told me might turn out to be a lie?” He stopped as though giving her time to come up with an answer, but nothing came from her to help him.

“I really need your help mom. I wish you were here.” Without taking notice, Meiko’s hand twitched. She lightly moaned as she gradually opened her eyes, but was blinded by the sunlight. Before her eyes were fully closed, she caught the silhouette of someone sitting by her bedside.

“Ronnie?” she whispered, her voice soft, but hoarse. Kae whipped his head around and watched her with unwavering focus, hoping what he heard wasn’t his own imagination. He gently held her hand and rested his elbows on the mattress. With the passing of a few minutes, Kae thought he’d heard something else until he felt the faint tightening of her hand around his.

“Mom?” Kae he gently called, trying not to shout with excitement because he was afraid he'd cause her to go deaf. Her eyes were half way open and staring at the ceiling.

“Kae…my baby,” she whispered. “...Where’s Ticharia?”

Kae looked down out of sorrow that his mother could come up with such a question at her reawakening. Part of him wanted to get the doctor, but if the room was flooded with people in a short amount of time, she'd probably lapse back in a coma, but he had to tell them sometime. Just this time, just this moment, he wanted her to himself before they would begin to help her.

“She’s…she’s gone,” he said, holding back his own tears as he looked away from his mother. “She died at her foster parents’ home.” He stopped and left her with that answer. Even that little bit of information was going to be hard swallow. If he were to tell her how Ticharia died, she might definitely go back into a coma or even fall into the dark abyss of death.

“What about your father…and Bear?” Meiko continued, her eyes still gazing blankly at the ceiling.

“They’re gone too,” he answered, lowering his voice before quickly adding, “I’m sorry mom.” Kae moved his eyes back towards her to see a sparkle roll down the side of her face and into her ear. “I should’ve done something. I failed as a son and a big brother. If only I had been defiant and tried my best to stop dad from taking that job…t-t-then none of this would’ve happened. We all would've still...”

“It’s okay,” she comforted. Although her physical features were scarred, her spirit and voice were not. She blinked as the corner of her lip turned up on the unburned, left section of her face. The right side was exposed to so much heat until her part of her lips had melted together. “I know you did everything you could…I know you did…but this…life…fate.”

“I hate fate,” he mumbled. His mother always believed that things happen for a reason and people had different destinies that they’re supposed to fulfill within their life. Kae hated this talk, but was also fascinated by it even though his life seemed to be filled with nothing except bad luck. Silence crept into the room.

Kae stared at her face, grimancing at the sight of the burns. Her soft, glowing exterior was to be no more. The warmth and smoothness of when she use to lay her cheek against him, replaced by warped skin. He wanted to shed tears for her as she probably hadn't shed any for herself, but he didn't. He wanted to be strong for her...wanted to give his own strength to her...wanted so much. The more he stared, the more he desired to cry. His heart was in him churning stomach as what happened to his mother ate at him. Guilt reared its head as Kae remembered her shoving them away from danger. If only he had sensed the beams falling, and if only he had grabbed her by the wrist to pull her to safety along with them would she not be there.

It wasn't fair she had to suffer if she was to move again. Kae envisioned people stopping, staring, and pointing at his mother as she makes her way to the mart or to simply retrieve the mail from her box. Inhuman and cruel jokes would surround the air in which she'd stand. Unpleasant names would match the degree of her grotesque appearance. Then, she'd be at home alone, sitting in a chair that faced a mirror only to see an unknown person stare back with the expression of a broken monster. Tears would then stream down her face as her heart shattered from the pain of loss and lonliness moreso than being addressed by vulgar humour.

Shaking the thoughts from his mind, Kae tightly shut his eyes and cupped her hand in his in a protective grip before whispering in a pleading tone, "Please hang on mom...p-please hang on. Don't slip away. I'm being strong for you." He laid his forehead against his fingers.

"You...don't have to...be strong...for me. Be strong...for yourself," she told him. "You're the one who has to keep moving forward."

"What about you?" he desperately wondered.

“I have all the strength I need...Kae,” Meiko began as her eyes closed. “I love you.” A wave of fear swept through him as the grip of her hand loosed and became limp again. He leapt to his feet in panic, but sighed in relief that the machine was still beeping. There he stayed until he remembered the meeting he was supposed to have with the major. He hesitated about leaving her, but he had to go and said good-bye.

Kae returned to the P.B.M building fifteen minutes before six. He was nervous and yet eager to view the video. In his mind, he hoped they made a miscalculation or something, but if they did, why did he have that terrible gut feeling that kept eating at him every time he thought about it. He decided to take the stairs and ponder about it for a while longer. It was strange though; one week after she was adopted and three days after the millionaire couple went on air to say they had accepted Ticharia did it happen.

“This isn’t too hard to figure out Kae,” a menacing voice in the back of his head spoke to him in a chilling tone that sent shivers down his spine.

“What are you talking about?” Kae responded to this darkness in him.

“Look at the facts. That night your family was attacked, whoever it was wanted all of you dead. Once the couple went on air, they knew where they could find your sister and that’s where they went,” it told him, quieting itself as it went, giving the way it communicated a depressing feel. Fear crept through Kae’s body, making him hesitate to take the next step towards the truth. Looking up, he could see the door marked level three, just a few steps in front of him. Was he sure he could handle the truth? Would he rather live his life believing his sister’s demise was nothing more than a misfortune?

"This is what I joined for. I wanted to the see the evidence. I felt so sure of myself, convinced that all he said was a lie, but…if it was a lie…why was I still compelled to join?” Kae fought within himself as struggled to either progress towards harsh reality of what might be the truth or back down in the depths of the lie he in which was comforted.

“Come on Kae,” the chilling voice taunted. “You don’t have much time.” If the voice came with a face, he knew that it would be sneering at him with a provocative grin, but he understood that this dark thing was right. If he didn’t hurry and make a decision, Kun might just forget all about showing him the tape, if there was one. Kae got out of his thoughts to find himself trembling.

“Why am I shaking? What is there to be afraid of? It’s just a stupid tape!” Kae shouted at himself, trying to force himself to move, but something was holding him back. It felt like something or someone had a freezing grip that held him in one place. He was completely paralyzed with fear.

“So this is what people meant by not being able to handle the truth,” the voice came again. “Isn’t lying in the lie more comfortable than beating yourself up over the truth?” Kae nodded slowly. What was he saying? Lying in the lie was more comfortable than facing the truth. It was a protective shield that blocked everything else, nothing could get and nothing that anyone said or did made any difference. It was a shield, yet it was a dark one, one that never gave peace, even now. It never gave him peace even on the day he heard on the news. He knew from that day something wasn't right. Kae backed down a step.

“I can’t do this,” Kae quivered. He looked down at his hand to see it trembling, but gripped the railing in order for it to stop. “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I do this? Its four steps plus air standing between the door and me. Its so easy to get there, but why is it so hard for me to make the move?”

“Look at this,” the voice seemed to chuckle. “Have you ever seen an eighteen year old cry?” That was it, that was the last straw. The darkness was the lie and the truth was the light. Although he stayed in the dark for many years and the light may hurt his eyes, he’ll finally be able to see clearly and possibly rest. Kae took a step forward.

“This is the only way,” Kae said to encourage himself, but only halfheartedly believing it. Another step. “I can do this. I know what I’m about see may not be pleasant, but…” One more step. “At least I’ll know.” Kae made it to the door and opened it. Right in front of him lied the door with Meeting Room A on it. With his shaking hands, Kae opened the door. The room was dark, only the light of the projector provided enough light for him to find himself a seat.

“Well, aren’t you an on time person,” Kun spoke through the blackness. Kae picked up his wrist and pressed a button his watch that illuminated the flashing numbers. The time went from 5:59 to 6:00 and here he thought he’d been standing in the hall for almost an hour. “Are you ready?”

Kae jerked his head up, somewhat startled before saying yes. Kun pressed a button on the projector and the screen flashed, bringing up an unsteady picture taken by the amateur recorder. Kae was now re-examining the video he dreaded so much, with its extraordinary similarities between the millionaire’s burning house and his own. The flames roared and screaming entered the speaker on the camera. Whatever the person, who was taping, was trying to say was vague. Sirens entered the scene as firefighters drove their trucks in front of the camera and scrambled to get everything operational to put out the fire.

“There!” Kun burst out above the noise, almost making Kae leap out the chair. He looked at the major’s shadow covered face.

“What?” Kae asked him.

“Didn’t you see it?” Kun wondered. Kae shook his head. Kun rewound the tape and played it again. “There.” Kun pointed, but Kae still didn’t see anything. He rewound the tape again, but slowed it down. “Look carefully…towards the back of the house.”

Kae did as he was told and there, he saw it. The thing he didn’t see before. There was a faint glint of light, but it only lasted for a split second. “Not again,” Kae sighed as he let the truth sink in. Kun paused it where they saw the shimmer of light. He zoomed in, clearing up the pixels as he went until it was as clear as it was going to get, but Kae noticed it. Although the head of the machine was still shrouded in darkness, he knew that it was same thing that shattered his family. “That’s the thing. That’s the one that destroyed my home.”

Kun sat the remote down and looked at the screen with his hands locked under his chin. “We’ve noticed on the monitors that there have been some strange activities going on and that a P.B.M was flying around. We’ve checked our stock, but they’re all here. What I don’t understand is why someone would attack a small place, no offense.” Kun looked over at Kae who nodded that it was all right. “Machines like those are supposed to be used for the protection of Johto, not destruction.”

“Maybe so, but even the things that were meant for good are also used for evil and sometimes visa-versa,” Kae said, staring at the screen. Kun didn’t respond only made a clapping sound so that the lights came on. “But the guy that was after me,” Kae began, catching Kun’s unflinching attention. “He said that my sister and I saw something we weren’t supposed to see or see and live to tell about it.”

“Is that all he said?” Kun asked, getting slightly hopeful with this newly found information. Kae only nodded, as he got up from his chair and walked towards the door.

“Thank you Major Kun. Now I know the truth,” he told him before leaving. Kun only followed his movements until he was out of sight and felt powerless to help the kid. There was nothing he could do.

“What’s in the past, stays in the past,” Kun muttered more to the screen than to himself. “Too bad that doesn’t go for memories.”

Kae walked down the hall, somewhat hunched over with his head hanging low. The pain of the past had returned and it ached inside of him even though he felt an unusual sense of relief. Laughter from his father, his sister, and even the growl of the unpredictable Bear was something he’ll only hear again in his memories, which were sure to fade in time. Without realizing, Kae was on the floor where the training equipment sat. He threw his jacket on a near by chair as he made his way over to a large ivory bag that hung from a string.

“I can’t sleep,” Kae thought to himself as he swung his left fist into the broad sack. “Why didn’t I just leave?” He swung his right fist into the bag, making it rock gently. “I should’ve decline! I shouldn’t have seen it!” He kept throwing punches, each one getting more furious than the next. “It’s not fair! Why do I have to be the one to suffer?” The punching bag swung outward from the harsh punch. Kae caught the bag before it could hit him, his knuckles blood red, but unscathed.

“Why!” He shouted in the still air of the room when there wasn’t a reply. He sank to his knees and held his head even lower as it rested against the unconscious bag. “I should’ve just died, I should’ve been there with Ticharia so I won’t have to suffer and we...all could be together.”

Kae sat still, almost appearing inanimate himself. Behind him, watching from the glass was Miao as he had watched Kae take out his anger on the bag. Without Kae moving anymore, Miao silently left as he had came, leaving Kae alone again. He stepped through the opened doors of the elevator and pressed a button on the panel.

"Suck it up kid. You’re not the only one who experience traumatic events. There’s always someone with much worse things than you. Get over your ridiculous, childish fears.” The doors closed and Miao was gone from the floor.

Five…ten…fifteen minutes passed and yet Kae still hadn’t moved from his spot. The lifeless room and the still air would make almost anyone go insane when trapped in their own mind. His eyes filled with the harshness of reality that life will never be fair and that life doesn’t care for anyone.

“Why am I still here? Why am I not the one who died?” The shadowy questions, still clinging to him and there wasn’t an answer to relieve them from his head. “Why am I alive?” he repeated with sullen dignity.

“Kae?” a pleasant and mellow voice whispered through the air. Kae was too tired to recognize the voice.

“I must be going insane.” A cynical smile stretched across his face.

“Kae…my little man,” the voice kept speaking with a placid tone, a tone that was so familiar and brought peace. “Are you hurt? Here, mommy will make it all better.”

“Mom?” Kae whispered as he lifted his head, his neck aching from being bent for so long. He scanned the room, frantically looking for the source of the voice, but noticed himself going back in the abyss of his memories. There…under the great oak tree was Kae, who was no more than three years old at the time, crying with his hand clasped around his injured knee. Bent over him was his mother in orange maternity clothes, her stomach fairly plump with Ticharia inside.

“I remember this,” Kae thought. “This was the time I got chased up a tree by a Zangoose. I didn’t know that Zangoose could climb.”

“Hold still, this won’t sting,” she told him, her voice gentle as she poured some clear liquid on a rag and then placed it on Kae’s knee. She blew on it, after removing the towel, her breath cool yet warm. It eased the stinging pain and she placed a bandage over it. “See,” she said as he picked him up. “That wasn’t so bad.” Mieko cradled him in her arms, staring down at him with an affectionate smile.

“It hurts mommy,” the younger Kae sobbed. “And I was so scared.” Mieko held him closer her to her as though she was afraid someone was going to take him from her.

“I know son,” she replied. “I know you were scared, but there’s only so much I can do. The medicine can help heal the physical pain, and I can try to help with the inner pain, but you’ll have to do your part on that one. No pain is too great to overcome no matter how hard it may seem. Never let anything weigh you down Kae…anything.”

“But why did it happen to me?” he blubbered, with snot running out of his nose.

Mieko sighed. “I don’t know son. Things happen for a reason and usually come out to be a good reason in the long run. If that Zangoose didn’t chase you then you’d probably end up eating those poison berries.”

“That’s right. I was out picking berries that day for my mom. I stopped to eat some off a bush. They resembled oran berries, but they were a shade darker. If the Zangoose didn’t get angry at me for trespassing into its territory, then I’d probably be dead from the poison.”

“It’ll be okay Kae,” she whispered to him as she laid her cheek on his head. “I love you.” Those three words echoed through Kae’s head as he was teleported back from his memories into the real world. He looked around for his mom, but the exercising equipment was the only thing there. Getting himself together and taking a few deep breaths, he made his way over to the shielded windows. Pulling back the blinds, Kae noticed the city looked like a vast empty space with specks of light. Goldenrod was still bustling with activity for the people who weren’t too fond of daylight.

“If things happen for a reason…then why did this happen?” he muttered before taking his hands away from the blinds.

Tortoises pwnz you!
I don't have much to say this review. This was a good chapter for character development. We learned a little about Miao's personality, and his past was hinted at. Also a good emotional chapter for Kae. Keep up the good work!

Good to see at least one regularily updated fic. ^_^;

Heh, I could definitely imagine Miao as the tough drill-sergeant person. And the expressions on Kae would have probably been absolutely priceless were this animated. xD

He seems to have a lot of emo moments, though. I can't blame him, of course, considering the suddenness of all the traumatic events that happened to him. Heh.

I really loved the bit about the Zangoose. ^_^ And I really pity Vaporeon. Idiot humans. BOTH of them. xD

Lookin' forward to see more of this.

As usual, thank you for the replies!
I don't know about regularly updated. There was a four month difference between chapter two and three (I think those were the ones) <(^_^;)>. Chapter eight will be up soon...as soon as this horrid monster called writer's block leaves me alone<(-_-)>...

Okay, I accidentally made another thread because I could not find this one, but now that I have, I will make the updates here. The other I will delete since no one else has posted in it.

Chapter 7: Novice

Kae, half asleep, watched the clock tick. It was four forty seven in the morning and yet the phone didn’t ring. Kae sighed as he awaited the ringing of the phone to signal him to get up for more training. The only thing that kept him awake was the video he saw that proved his sister’s death wasn’t an accident. Even after he’d turned over things in his head about the incident, he dozed off every now and then. Around seven, Kae figured he had the day off so he decided to catch up on the sleep he missed. Only an hour had passed before the phone sounded. It rang at least five times before Kae opened his eyes. With his tired arm, he extended his hand over to the phone and clumsily took it off the hook. Too tired to hold the receiver, he sat it on the bed and laid his ear against it.

“Hello?” he mumbled, his eyes steadily going close.

“Meet me on level B one,” Miao instructed. “You got that Kae?” Kae didn’t respond in words, only let out a snore in response. “Kae!” Miao shouted into the phone.

Kae slit his eyes. “Yes sir.” There was a click on the other end and no other sound filtered through the receiver. Kae tried to set the phone on the hook, but it only slid off and hung by its spiral cord, letting out its dial tone. Kae ignored the agitating sound and rolled over. He buried his face into the feathery cream pillow and groaned.

----------------------------------------

“You’re late,” Miao told Kae as he stepped off the elevator.

Kae shifted his mouth. “You’re the one who’s late,” he responded. “You were supposed to call earlier!”

“I told you I was going to wake you up at various times,” Miao reminded him. “You never know where there maybe an attack.” Kae couldn’t disagree with that statement although it seemed highly unlikely that someone would attack a place right outside of Goldenrod. Following behind Miao led him to a P.B.M.

“A Vaporeon P.B.M?” Kae questioned, looking the enormous object over.

“Today, you’ll begin practicing piloting the P.B.M.” Kae began to look worried as he didn’t want to pilot any of the machines, but it was the only way for him to probably find his sister and father’s killer. Miao went over to the left side of the machine’s front leg and pressed his hand against it. A small square piece slid down revealing three buttons on a hidden panel. Kae watched as he pressed a green button that stood alone. Under the head of the P.B.M, a circular platform descended and stopped just above the floor.

“Get on,” Miao commanded. Kae nodded and hesitantly stood on the platform. “There’s a pilot suit already in place. Put that on and sit in the chair. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING!” He emphasized. Kae knew he was referring back to when he opened the door of the chamber. Miao pressed another button and the platform began to ascend. Kae stumbled at the sudden movement, but maintained his balance as the weird elevator rose. He looked upward, through the hole to see darkness. The inside appeared to move down and come to a halt. The inside lit up a little, allowing Kae to see better. He looked the inside over to find that nothing was different. It was just as simple as when his father had built the first one, with the exception of a few computer things added. Memories, of when he asked his father questions about certain things in the P.B.M to satisfy his curiosity, flooded his mind.

“That’s the set pod,” Kae said as he found himself pointing towards the large cylinder in the back. It was as though his body was quizzing him on the parts he knew. As his eyes scanned the bare area he ran across the pilot suit, which had a dire resemblance to the uniform, folded neatly on the light slate gray chair along with the helmet.

“Kae,” Miao’s voice called. Kae looked around to see where it came from before his eyes landed on a small speaker embedded in the metal.

He zipped up his suit before responding. “Yeah?”

“Strap yourself in and get ready to take it out,” Miao told him.

“Okay.” Kae put the helmet on and sat down in the seat. He snapped the safety belt into place and took hold of the controls. The wall in front of him began to withdraw into the floor, letting sunlight fill the room and the P.B.M.

“Go ahead and take it out.”

“Take it out?” Kae looked at the radio in astonishment. “But I don’t know to control this thing!”

“That’s why this is called training!” Miao shouted at him. “Just make sure you don’t back up!” Kae sighed and took a deep breath. Carefully, he leaned one of the sticks forward. One of the front legs of the P.B.M was lifted, moved forward and then sat back down on the floor, which slightly vibrated. He kept making slow steps towards the exit. Once he was inside the corridor, the door closed behind him, preventing him from going back inside the room. Kae kept going, even though the passage seemed longer than what it was.

Above the ground, the field was neatly cut along with a large hole in the shape of a rectangle. Kae finally exited the passage and was outside in the daylight. The door closed behind him, blending in with the rest of the field.

“What now?” he wondered, taking in the scenery. A whirring sound of a machine caught his attention and another door was opened in the ground. A second mechanism came forwards or leapt forward into the air and landed, with poise, onto the ground. “Show off,” Kae muttered, shifting his mouth.

“This will be a training session,” Miao informed. “Looked above you. There should be a screen above you that’s inserted into the ceiling. Press the bar that says training session.”

Kae did as he was told and touched the bar that was labeled training session. The other two bars above it, read Configuration and Status. The screen changed to another, which had the title as training session along with five other bars under it reading rank, wins, losses, draws, and battle. Kae pressed on the bar labeled battle, which then changed yet to another screen that had two open spaces. The space on the top with the blinking cursor wanted him to enter his name and the one on the bottom wanted him to key in his opponent’s name. After doing so, he tapped the word okay.

“What does this do?” Kae asked.

“It’s now set on a program which will emulate an actual battle. There are prototype missiles and weapons that are now set and armed for this occasion. The weapons won’t cause any physical damage. Just think of it as one of those arcade games where you pilot jets to take out your enemy.”

“Alright,” Kae said, looking up at the screen where it showed the outline of his P.B.M in white. There wasn’t any damage that was recorded, or at least, not yet. “But how do I launch my weapons and things like that?”

“That, you’ll learn on your own,” he replied. “Get ready to begin.”

“Huh? But that’s cheating! I don’t know how to work this thing that well!” Kae shouted as he grabbed the controls and watched as Miao charged him. Kae tried to move backwards, but wasn’t adjusted to moving the mechanism. The Arcanine P.B.M ran into his, head on. Kae was knocked forward, but was snatched back by his seat belt where his head slammed hard against the headrest. Although he wore a helmet, his head still hurt and throbbed. The dodger blue machine was thrown to the ground and left a deep trail in the dirt.

Kae opened his eyes and sharply inhaled, not only to see that everything was sideways, but there were a barrage of missiles heading straight for him. Without having enough time to react, Kae braced for impact. When the missiles connected, they exploded, sending fire towards the sky before disappearing. He breathed heavily and rapidly, trying to gather what had just happened to him. Glancing at the screen above in him, he saw that a part of the right side of the on the outline flashed in red. Twenty-six percent lied in the corner of the screen, meaning he had taken some damage.

“I thought you said we weren’t using real missiles!” Kae yelled into the radio after holding down the button to communicate.

“Are you callin’ me a liar?” Miao replied angrily.

“If the shoe fits!” Kae snapped while miraculously getting his P.B.M back on its feet.

“I said we’re using prototypes! Everything we fire will feel as though you got hit with an actual weapon!” he retorted. “Now quit being a cry baby and battle!” Kae growled in disgust when he heard Miao reply. “You’d probably wouldn’t survive in combat, battling the way you are.”

“I just started!” he exclaimed. “Give me a break!”

The Arcanine P.B.M crouched. “With pleasure.” Miao rushed him again. “Let your instincts take control.”

“Alright,” Kae thought. “Here goes nothing.” Kae tried to relax a bit, but made sure his hands were securely on the controls. He forwarded his, glancing over the controls. “Now where are my weapons?”

Frantically searching for the correct button, he overlooked the two that were on top of the joysticks. While doing that, he didn’t anticipate the speed Miao could conjure up and wasn’t prepared for impact. Kae could see the forepaw of the machine in the air and he also wasn’t able to see the ground anymore. Thinking as well as acting quickly, Kae made the back legs shift so the Vaporeon P.B.M kept its erect position before making a lightning twist. The fin of the machine came around and knocked Miao away from him, but he wasn’t knocked far. Kae breathed heavily with amazement at what he just did.

“So you do have some kinda fight in you,” Miao told him, but it didn’t sound as though he was congratulating Kae on his feat. “Let’s take it up a notch.” Miao shifted a lever in his P.B.M, which was on the ceiling, back to the number two. The outside of the machine flashed with a faint mixture of colors. “Maybe this’ll make fight more.”

“Oh boy,” Kae said as he clutched the controls. Kae finally noticed the button on top of the two joysticks. “Here I go.” He slammed his thumb down on the two buttons. He saw a missile followed by a bombardment of bullets coming from his machine and going towards Miao. The Arcanine P.B.M disappeared from its spot, letting the missile explode against the force it left behind and the bullets carve the ground.

“Damn, where’d he go?” Kae scanned the area, but Miao seemed to have vanished. “There!” A clump of grass swayed and petals were torn from their stem, but there wasn’t any wind strong enough to blow the flowers apart. “He’s too fast!” Different spots in the grass moved in various directions, almost at the same time, emphasizing Miao’s speed. Not wanting to stand there and be an open target for his opponent, Kae released a rapid fire of bullets at randomly selected spots. While firing, Kae got an uneasy feeling as he swung his P.B.M around, only to meet oncoming bullets.

Kae managed to jump backwards, evading the attack, but a brute force struck him in the back and sent him to the ground. The mechanism vibrated violently as numerous amounts of missiles connected with him. The screen began to flash with red as the percentage of damage rapidly rose. The assault deceased, giving time for the dust to settle. Kae’s machine was on its side and he was still clinging to the controls, trying to catch his breath.

“You giving up?” Miao asked, sounding as if Kae had told him that and he was just repeating.

Kae groaned as he shifted his hands to make them more comfortable. “Of course not!” He shouted back as he looked closely at the screen. The percentage of damage he had now taken on was eighty-nine. He got his Vaporeon P.B.M onto its feet to confront Miao again. “You’re nothing but a cheater,” Kae growled. “You’re using Arcanine’s speed. You didn’t tell me I could use my Pokémon!”

“Do you think your Vaporeon can handle it?”

“Of course!” Kae automatically shouted as Miao finished the sentence. Anger took control of him as he unbuckled himself and got from the seat. He pressed a button that opened the glass in the set pod. With a press of the small gray button in the center of his red and white sphere, the contraption opened, ejecting light onto the floor that formed into his Vaporeon. The aquatic creature looked around, taking in the sight, strange smells and even the tension that seemed to cling to the air. “Vaporeon, you remember this place don’t you?” It nodded, staring at him while shifting nervously. “Good, then I need for you to get into the set pod. You’re piloting.” The creature looked at him with a nervous expression, but sensed that Kae was in no mood for defiance.

It could only do as he said and entered the container, letting the glass close it in. The bottom it was standing on lit up and Vaporeon was levitated a small ways in the air. Kae got back into his seat and strapped himself in. “I’m ready!”

“Are you sure you want to keep up this ludicrous farce?”

“Shut up and lets continue!” Kae shouted at him as he moved the lever into P.C.P two. He could hear the humming of the machine as it got adjust to the change. Vaporeon flinched and strained to stand as its legs began to buckle. It squealed in pain, but low because it didn’t was Kae to hear and think that it wasn’t able to handle the machine. The strength it had felt as though it was being sucked up by a powerful vacuum cleaner. “He thinks he’s indomitable, but he’s going down.” Now that Vaporeon was in control of the steering, all Kae had to do was discharge weapons. “Let’s go Vaporeon!”

Vaporeon opened its eyes only to see blurred figures in front of it. It was already exhausted from standing in one position. Kae called its name again and Vaporeon summed up strength to move. Kae launched a missile, but Miao just sidestepped it as if dodging a harmless ball. Vaporeon went after him with a command from Kae. Miao met them head on, but bent low to the ground so that Kae’s front end went over him and once again found himself stand erect. The Pokémon managed to work its way back onto four legs before doing a three hundred and sixty-degree turn, knocking Miao with its tail.

The force from the hit backed him up and Vaporeon took the opportunity to attack again. It whipped its tail around, bringing it close to the ground, thus, knocking Miao’s legs from under him. With his chance in sight, Kae released a barrage of missiles mixed with bullets. Miao only had enough time to keep from hitting the ground, but not enough time to evade the missiles. There was as explosion and Kae smiled in triumph as he caught his breath.

“How do you like that?” Kae asked.

“So you’re satisfied with this simple feat?” Miao responded with his own question as the smoke cleared.

“What?” Kae checked the status of his opponent to see that he only took twelve percent damage. “There’s something wrong…there should’ve been more damage than that! How did…” The shifting of the machine interrupted Kae’s sentence. “Vaporeon…what’s wrong?” Kae leaned and glanced behind him to see Vaporeon gasping for breath as though it was suffocating. “Oh man, I did it again.”

“I think that’ll be enough practice for today,” Miao told him.

“But the match isn’t over yet,” Kae reminded him, switching the machine from Pokémon Copilot two to one. Vaporeon collapsed onto the solid platform after it wasn’t levitating anymore and the machine stopped absorbing its energy.

“I know,” Miao replied as he caught Kae off guard by quickly discharging his weapons. The percentage was now at a hundred and the match was over. It was recording the score and announced that Kae had lost by forming large, white bold-faced words that covered the screen before returning to the main. “It is now.” Although Kae had completely given up, he wasn’t prepared for a sneak attack that would wear down the last bit of energy he had left. “You’re worthless, I don’t know why Kun sent me after you, it was a waste of time.” Miao moved his machine towards the tunnel from which he had come. Stunned by the insult, Kae was momentarily incapable of speech, which allowed Miao to say, “You’re inept for this job. Why don’t you quit and go home.” Miao told him as his P.B.M entered the shaft and disappeared from sight.

Kae looked down as the controls before silently answering the question to himself. “Because I have no home.” The door opened for him to bring his machine back down and into place. With better precision than when he started and less fear, he backed the machine down so he wouldn’t have to turn it around and possibly cause an accident while doing so. The only thing that bugged Kae was Miao’s attitude and how angry Kae got when he was around him. It was as though Miao had done something to him…or didn’t do something. Since he had to concentrate on getting the battle mechanism into place, Kae couldn’t think as much as he wanted to at the time.

Once his machine was in place, he unbuckled himself and opened the set pod. Vaporeon lied on the platform regaining its strength through sleep. Kae quietly recalled it and placed the ball in his pocket. Standing to the far left, he pressed a button, which was followed by a high-pitched hum and began descending towards the floor of the building. The circular elevator came to a stop and Kae hopped off and the piece climbed back into its rightful place. Kae was greeted by a descent number of members who had wide smiles across their faces and some were even giving him applause. The exhausted Kae wasn’t in the mood to entertain the sunny disposition audience, but he was partially curious as to why they had flocked around him.

“Is there a problem?” Kae asked in a tedious tone, looking the spectators over.

“Congratulations,” the one who was nearest him spoke, his glasses pushed up on his face. “You are like the first person to ever get a hit off of Miao.”

Kae tilted his head slightly as he raised his eyebrow in a questioning manner. “Haven’t you guys ever hit him?”

They all shook their heads before the same person responded. “Nope. None of us had ever laid a hit on him and some of us been here for at least five years.”

“From the way it looked,” another responded, his hair cut low and in the shape of a box. “He was taking it easy on you. Normally, he would be more severe than that.”

Kae was lost at the statement and wondered if that was easy, what hard was. Unfortunately, he didn’t have time to ask them because the sergeant ushered them back to their workstations. With the crowd scattered, he made his way to the elevator.

Chapter 8: Mission I – Part One: Mission Briefing

Three weeks had passed since the time Kae had first learned to control a battle mechanism. It was only four more weeks before the preliminary rounds began to sort out the weaklings in the bunch and to find the ones who will put on a good show for the paying spectators. Although Kae still nearly had an entire month, he was nervous and fidgeted constantly like a seven-year-old child who had a rash on his rear end. Even though a lot of time has passed, things still didn’t get better between Miao and him. Miao was still the same austere, silent type that didn’t give anyone a break, but Kae learned to cope with it.

He was still being woken up at various times, which he also got accustomed to, even to the point where he’s able to predict when Miao’s going to call. His mom was still in a coma and hadn’t woken since that day she spoke to him about the rest of the family. With all the work Kae had been doing lately, and hearing some of the other members’ life stories, he learned to cope with the loss of his family as well as come to the fact there was nothing he could’ve done to change the tragedy. He had been granted permission to use the Goldenrod Elite database, the restricted library and files to track down the murderer, despite the fact there wasn’t a trace of any type of evidence.

Kae was deep into studying in the recreation area on the sixth floor when he was called to level B one to move some packages. He got up from the table, leaving his papers the way they were, confident no one would want to look at a jumble of sophisticated information. The blinds were pulled up letting the light shine in from the cloudless blue. He walked past a large beige, curved sofa that sat on a mahogany carpet. On the sides were two lazy boy chairs and two rocking chairs that could recline, which one of each were black leather. In the front of the chairs was a big screen, silver television that was inserted into the wall. The speakers were on the side and were just as large as the television screen.

Behind the chairs were two round, manila tables with five chairs seated under each one. Then came the marble white counter that was like the one found in a café. Stools with cushioned red seats were neatly pushed under it. Behind the counter on the left wall and the right wall were refrigerators along with a few smaller ones. Food resided in them, for those who weren’t afraid that their ration would somehow disappear. Cabinets covered most of the back wall and over the eight-eye stove. Of course there was the usual little microwave, stuck in the corner and available for use by those who were too lazy to cook.

Kae exited the elevator on B1and the place was bustling with activity. Most people were running back and forth, carrying boxes, clipboards, and papers while others were still being advised in what they were supposed to do. He looked around, catching sight of boxes being stored in several P.B.Ms, including his Vaporeon mechanism. Dodging the rushing members, Kae made his way over to his battle mechanism, but collided with another person. The two fell to the ground, landing hard on their rears.

“Are you okay?” Kae immediately asked, looking at him.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” the teenager replied, rubbing his short, aureoline yellow hair. Glancing around with saddle brown eyes, which laid behind thin glasses, he noticed a flat, slate blue rectangular object. After grabbing it, the two stood up. The boy dusted off his burlywood pants and pulled on the hem of his ultramarine shirt.

“I haven’t seen you around here before.” Kae pointed towards him.

“I just joined…well, not just. I became a member five days ago,” he replied, placing the laptop under his arm. “I’m Scix Konichi from Saffron City.” He held out his hand and Kae shook it.

“Kae Zenner,” he responded. “Wow, Saffron City? That’s in Kanto!” Kae looked at him in surprise. “It’s a pretty nice city from what I saw in pictures. What made you leave? Did they draft you?”

“Where have you been for ten years? Kanto’s completely annexed by an iniquitously vice team, who I must say, must have access to advanced technology for such an invasion. Although there isn’t any evident confirmation of this hypothesis, I suspect there’s a correlation between them and the N.A.F,” Scix intelligently spoke.

Kae raised an eyebrow in uncertainty. “Huh? Could you run that by me again?”

“Oh, sorry about that,” the boy apologized, rubbing the back of his head. “I’m known to be a…”

“Motor mouth?” Kae finished.

“Yeah. What I said was Kanto had been taken over for ten years now and we’re still at war with the people who did it. I’m thinking the Neo Apostasy Federation has something to do with it.”

“War? I remember! That’s what my dad was talking about.” He snapped his fingers. “Unbelievably, now that I think about it, I hadn’t even remembered that the P.B.Ms were built for combat. The only thing I associated with them were the annual tournament.”

“Kae!” Kun called as he walked up to him. Kae shook his head as he focused on the present. “Glad to see you’re getting acquainted with your teammate.”

“My teammate?” Kae muttered as he looked at Scix only to receive a bewildered expression in return. “My teammate for what?”

“We’ve just received a shipment of evolutionary stones and overchargers that needs to be delivered to the Olivine Technology Center," Major Kun informed them. "They need to arrive no later than twenty-two hundred hours tomorrow."

"Over-what-ers?" Kae asked, dumbfounded.

"Overchargers," Scix corrected. "Overchargers are devices that gives the P.B.Ms extra energy incase the main source runs out, but only in emergencies. It's never to be mixed with the main source or else the P.B.M would be liable to explode."

"Then what are the stones for?"

Major Kun was beginning to answer, but Scix cut in. "The Olivine Technology Center has been researching the properties within the stone. Their trying to harvest the power that make the Pokémon evolve and use it as an alternate source..."

"For powering the P.B.Ms," Kae finished.

"Yeah...basically," Scix said as he nodded.

"Are you finished now?" Kun interrupted with an irritated expression.

Scix gulped and took a step back. "I apologize, sir."

He coughed before continuing. "Now, as I've said, these items are to be delivered no later than twenty-two hundred hours tomorrow. The items are expensive and not easy to come by. Obviously, the Lieutenant General trusts us with it getting there safely." Major Kun began walking off and motioned the other two to follow behind him. He stopped over by a map of Johto. "The items are actually going to be stored in your P.B.Ms and the transport trucks will be just decoys, but protect them like they're holding the items. There may be some interference. How heavy, I cannot say. The trip should take you no more than a day and a half, providing it's safe all the way."

"What time do we deport?" Scix asked.

"As soon as the P.B.Ms are finished being stocked," Major Kun told him. "Miao, he'll be the commander on this mission."

Kae narrowed his eyes. “Why am I not surprised?”

“That won’t be a problem will it Kae?” Kun asked as though able to read Kae’s mind as his back was to him.

He quickly straightened up. “No, sir!”

“Who’s Miao?” Scix inquired.

Kae laughed weakly. “You’ll meet him soon enough.”

The major looked back and nodded before moving off. Kae sighed before looking over to see Scix sitting on a stack of boxes typing on his computer.

“What are you doing?” he asked, leaning over to look at the computer screen.

“I’m reconfiguring my laptop so I’ll be able to control the P.B.M by the use of my computer,” he answered, still typing rapidly.

“Hmm? Why don’t you use the control sticks like everyone else?”

“My muscular density isn’t as, in the absence of a better word, great as others,” Scix admitted.

“Ever tried lifting weights?” Scix shook his head, his attention more on the computer than the conversation. Seeing as how the conversation wasn’t going any further, Kae excused himself and returned to the recreational room.

One of the many documents left on the tabletop by Kae was lifted away from the pile. Miao flipped open the cover, his eyes skimming the document as he leafed through it. When he neared the end of the folder, his eyes was suddenly locked onto a picture of the victims. Underneath the photographs were their biographies. He read each one over, especially the deaths or sustaining injuries. The sound of footsteps appeared and Miao turned his head slightly, looking out the corner of his eye at the one who entered.

Stealing one last glance at the page, Miao flipped it close and casually held it outward. “You shouldn’t leave classified documents such as these lying around. This type of personal information can be utilized by anyone.”

Kae walked past him while snatching the manila folder from his grasp. “Yeah, I’ll try to remember that.” He moved over to the table, beginning to stack the papers and folders atop one another. As he sat the items in a cardboard box, he got a weird feeling of being watched. Lifting his head, he noticed Miao staring intently at him with a subtle expression of annoyance. This irked Kae and dropped the last stack into the box, creating a loud thud.

“Dude, what’s your problem?” Kae asked with obvious irritation. “All this watching like a Pidgeot has got to stop because frankly, it’s pissing me off!”

Miao turned to the side, but kept his eye on him. “You’d better be aware of how you address your commanding officer,” Miao responded sternly. “For this mission.” Kae backed off somewhat, but continued to growl with hatred seeing the odds was not in his favor.

“Y-Yes, sir,” he muttered strangely, forcing himself to say just two words.

“Hurry and suit up. They’ll be finished within the next fifteen minutes.” Miao moved towards the door, but then stopped in the opening. “I suggest you focus on this upcoming mission because I don’t want some distraught teen that can’t control his emotions on my team.”

Kai curled his fingers into a tight fist as he shot Miao a look of disgust. “Not like you’d ever understand! You probably never even had a family that took time to care about you with the way you act! They probably wouldn’t even care if someone had kidnapped you at an early age like a brother of mine whom I’ve never even met nor knew about.” Kae dropped his eyes somewhat. “My mom…she…every year she would pin his picture on the fridge as a reminder.”

Miao snorted somewhat. “And what? Want me to show you sympathy…to take it easy on you? To feel your pain? I have news for you private…this isn’t a humanitarian summit. I couldn’t care less about what happened to you or your family. If you want a shoulder to cry on, I suggest you find someone who cares…” With that, he left the room leaving Kae in a drowning in a waterfall of emotions, which he quickly put to the back of his mind and hid it with a face of neutrality. Hoisting the boxes, he left the recreation room as well.

~~~~~~~
Kae had finally gotten in the pilot seat of his P.B.M and just a few minutes he would be on his first mission. The earlier statements said by Miao was now locked in the hidden vaults of Kae’s mind. He pulled the safety belt across his chest and waist before locking it. Twisting his helmet, he pulled it down on it head and adjusted it so the item sat comfortably. Just as he did, a small video popped up, showing Major Kun’s face. He as well as the others turned to face the screen.
“Is everything in order and operational?” he asked.
“Yes, major,” Miao answered.
“Good. I will go over the mission briefing once more,” he told them. “As you know, you will be transporting elemental stones and overchargers to Olivine City. The convoys that will also be joining you are decoys, but protect them as you would if they were carrying the actual items. If there’s to be any interference on the way, do what is deemed necessary, but do not, under any circumstances, let there be casualties. Remember that you’ll be under the command of Miao as he is the commanding officer on this assignment. When you reach Olivine there they’ll remove the cargo from your possession. However before you return, one of their own is transferring here. His name is Daemeon Rose and he will accompany you back. Any questions?”
“No sir!” they responded.
Major Kun nodded. “Good luck on this mission and may you make it to your destination without intervention from outside force.” The screen of him disappeared before being replaced by Miao’s face.
“When we move out I will take the lead, Scix you take the center and Kae you bring up the rear. Be alert at all times because the last thing we need is to be ambushed. Is that clear?”
“Yes sir!” the two replied. His face disappeared and the hatches began descending into the floor. Kae pulled the handle back into the P.C.P one position. The machine hummed as the energy flowed throughout and came to life. The top of the heavy door reached the floor, allowing them the freedom to move forward from their current position.
Being experienced as he was, Kae gripped the sticks and leaned them forward, causing the P.B.M to dart from its spot and up the ramp. The second entrance opened, letting him leap from the corridor and onto the ground. He noticed Miao was already ahead and waiting for them. Since he was to be the last in line, Kae stayed back and waited for Scix to make his appearance. Just after a few seconds, a streak of red darted from the ground. Not paying much attention, Kae couldn’t make out the figure until it landed in between him and Miao.
The appearance of the erect P.B.M resembled a creature that has a thick, metallic outer exoskeleton and crab-like pinchers, which had circular shapes that were black on the outside while the smaller, inner circle was yellow. The two sets of white bug-like wings on its back shifted a couple of times as if being tested.
“So…” Kae began, speaking through the radio. “I guess this means you have a Scizor as your copilot.”
“Yeah,” Scix smiled as he replied back. “Techno and I have been together for quite some time. I guess this means you have a Vaporeon.”
Kae nodded, momentarily forgetting Scix couldn’t see him. “Uh…yeah. We’ve been through a lot stuff together. Ain’t that right buddy?” The bubble jet Pokémon squealed in response, revealing its agreement to what was said. The convoy or vehicles pulled to the far side of the P.B.Ms and one of the people’s waved, signaling their readiness.
“Alright you two, stop conversing! It’s time to move!” Miao inserted commandingly as he steered his P.B.M to follow beside the group of trucks. Scix followed and Kae moved behind. The trucks had to take the road through Goldenrod while the mechanisms moved along the edge of the city. Due to their enormous height, they didn’t go unnoticed. A little girl tugged on her mother’s sleeve before excitingly pointing at the giant machines. Others decided to wave while some didn’t even take care to notice.
Kae felt a sense of pride and excitement swell within him as he saw people wave and cheer for them. Yet, he felt a deep sense of worry concerning the mission. He wasn’t positive about when the worried feeling came or wasn’t sure of what cause it. Taking a deep breath, he calmed his racing heart.
“Okay, this is my first mission and I can’t afford to screw this up,” Kae thought as he turned his attention in front of him.
Tortoises pwnz you!
Nice to see this is back. The pace is still a little rushed imho, but I think the chapters were still good. I really like the interaction between Kae and Miao. Keep up the good work!
