Ash’s performance vs Alain > Ash’s performance vs Paul in terms of trainer skill. Also vs Alain easily had the best overall production quality of any battle in the series.

Ash vs Paul is the magnum opus amidst all other battles in the Pokemon anime and nothing ever trumps that, the amazing tension, emotional weight and the buildup of the Ash-Paul rivalry climax, especially Infernape vs Electivire. Even as someone who was voted the biggest fan of the XY series twice in successive years, I can't help but admit that.

Yeah that battle was quite frankly an utter thematic failure as the culmination of Infernape’s character arc. Paul initially caught Chimchar due to him seeing value in its special Blaze, but since Chimchar wasn’t able to activate it whilst under him, Paul released Chimchar dismissing him as worthless without it. Ash on the other hand saw Chimchar for a lot more than special Blaze and even flat-out refused to train Chimchar to activate it when Paul suggested he do so. After this Chimchar gets double wins in gyms 5-7 forming a character arc showing that he can be strong even without Blaze, but then in gym 8 they have him suddenly master Blaze out of the blue with no prior training ‘cuz bond power’ undermining said character arc of Infernape not needing Blaze to be strong.

This is even further undermined when Ash deliberately exploits Infernape’s special Blaze in his battle with Paul by having Infernape take a direct Thunder, so that he could activate special Blaze (whilst still having enough stamina to perform close to optimally in that state) meaning that even Ash himself flat-out accepted that Infernape couldn’t get the job done without Blaze thereby proving Paul right that Infernape’s value primarily comes from his Blaze ability. You know what would have been more thematically satisfying? If Paul kept goading Ash and Infernape to activate special Blaze during the climax of their battle, but instead Infernape doesn’t activate it and wins with only his own strength a.k.a the strength that he obtained through his training with Ash.

Guess what my favorite part of Ash vs Paul is? Paul! In particular Paul’s long game plan during this battle that no trainer before or since in this anime has ever been showcased onscreen. Aggron + Gastrodon (Scouters) -> Drapion (Setter + Sweeper) -> Ninjask + Froslass (Stallers) -> Electivire (Clean-Up).

Aggron and Gastrodon’s job was to pressure Ash into situations where he would feel the need to switch thereby revealing more of his team in particular Paul needed to figure out his full team to know if he had any Poison pokémon on hand. After he was certain Ash didn’t have 1, Drapion setup Toxic Spikes and proceeded to dismantle half of Ash’s team. Ninjask and Froslass have incredible utility while Toxic Spikes is on the field due to the former’s insane speed (augmented by Speed Boost) and the latter’s phazing which makes her impervious to damage in Hail as long as she doesn’t go on the offensive.

I consider the 2nd episode of the Ash vs Paul 3 parter to be the best for how well it was structured. It starts by building up Drapion as an absolute beast and showcases the detriment of Toxic Spikes for Ash’s team even when Drapion isn’t on the field to then Ash having his ‘eureka’ moment and using underground Flare Blitz to burn away the toxic spikes thereby changing the momentum of the battle in his favor (though he did take over 8.5 minutes to figure it out while XY Ash was able to figure out a similar solution in about 30 seconds) and then mounting a counterattack to finally Gliscor being able to land massive damage on Drapion without facing the consequences of being vulnerable from Giga Impact thanks to his back spinning trick showcasing the fruits of its training with the air battle master and throwing Paul’s game off even further.

I’m highly confident that there’s no one on these forums who has analyzed Ash vs Paul in greater detail than I have, so trust me when I say that this battle most certainly isn’t some untouchable masterpiece (even by pokémon standards) that represents the peak of pokémon anime battles in every single area. As the climax of the story about 2 trainers with contrasting methodology for raising pokémon coming to accept each other’s methods as equally valid and even adopt them at times, this battle worked quite beautifully. As the climax of a story about Infernape’s long term character arc of proving that his worth isn’t primarily tied to his special Blaze, this battle is ultimately a failure. With regards to showing incredible strategies and tactics throughout, this battle was a roaring success and in terms of overall strategic/tactical display is still at the top ( thanks to Paul) though it has been outdone when talking about Ash’s trainer skill performances specifically. In terms of visual quality, this battle was the best at the time, but would pale in comparison to several battles from XY.

This battle is still Atsuhiro Tomioka’s magnum opus and 1 of the best battles in the show, but I reject the notion that it’s the undisputed best. In particular Ash vs Alain, also known as Shinzo Fujita’s magnus opus, out performs it in multiple aspects, and so is also a legitimate contender for the title of greatest pokémon anime battle. While it does not reach the heights of the Ash - Paul rivalry in terms of their conflict on pokémon raising methadology, neither does it drop the ball so absurdly low as this battle does in terms of being a culmination of Infernape’s character arc. Furthermore Ash vs Alain had much more of a ‘big fight feel ‘ meaning it felt like it was conducted on a considerably higher lvl strength wise because Alain was the only trainer to actually beat an E4 (Ash and Paul always got wrecked by the E4/Champion class trainers they faced in DP), and yet he showed such a strong desire to battle Ash with Ash in turn actually keeping up with him and giving him a competitive fight not to mention that Ash himself had previously performed so well against a freakin champion in XY.
