Pokemon BDSP - Recent Happenings Thread

Made it to the Pokémon League before Victory Road on BrilliantDiamond. Just need to do the same now on ShiningPearl, and I am way behind on that one. Hopefully if I get the energy needed, I will.

Ace and Aspie, for life and light!
My brother didn't think he was going to be able to get BDSP. I had to replace my 2DS XL, and after a system transfer to my new one, I used the trade credit from my old system to get him Shining Pearl for Christmas!

A couple of things I noticed:

  • This game does not carry over the feature in Pokémon Sword and Shield in which if you breed two Pokémon of the same species with Egg Moves, they will learn each other's Egg Moves. (I found this out in a rather disappointing way when I was breeding Pokémon and I hatched a shiny one before I could transfer all of the intended Egg Moves over.)
  • This game, however, does carry over a weird quirk from Pokémon Sword and Shield in that feeding a Pokémon a lot of the EV-reducing Berries (the Pomeg group) will cause it to be hungrier for more. I've seen the number go up to 51, though I currently have fewer of these Berries than in Galar, where my record was 171 Qualot Berries (my full allotment of at that time).
EDIT: I tried it just now and hit a new record of a Pokémon wanting up to 55 Berries in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (for Grepa Berries), in this case a Munchlax I had just fed 6 each of Pomeg, Kelpsy, Qualot, and Hondew Berries.

You mean the feature where a pokemon can learn egg moves from the other parent if they have an empty move slot? If so that's extremely disappointing since I spent several hours in my 3DS games to make three egg move pokemon for nothing!

It's also a little weird though since this video showed that BDSP DOES have the feature

You! Me! Rivals! Yes?
Poffins- 100 times harder than the original games or the curry mini game in SWSH. I eventually got the hang of stirring the pot after watching a few tutorial videos, but it seems like they completely changed the flavors of most of the berries so it’s hard to tell what kinds of poffins I’ll end up with.
So it's not just me, that's a relief to hear. I tried the Poffin mini-game a couple of times, could never get it right, and always ended up with Foul Poffins. Once I realised that Poffins aren't really needed outside of the Pokemon Contests, like they don't raise friendship or anything, I gave up on it, but I'm glad to hear that it isn't just my lack of skill and the mini-game is actually harder now.

Huh, it may be glitched for shiny Pokémon or something.

It took forever, but I have obtained Togepi and am in Hearthome, currently trying to get the friendship bonus before moving on...sometimes the music feels a little quiet.

I think that if the mini game had motion control as an option, it would be less frustrating. I think I've only managed to make Poffins that we’re level 10 without burning once and only two were made.

A lot has happened since my last post but I'm just here to lament losing a full odds random encounter Shiny Weezing yesterday in Stark Mountain. I was in about the worst scenario for it you could have since it was with a double battle with Buck. The Weezing had Neutralizing Gas so Claydol could hit it Super Effective with both Extrasensory and Earth Power, and I had to take out the second pokemon in the double battle before I could even attempt to catch it. It Exploded immediately, making this the second shiny I've lost to explosion (first was a Gravelar in Soul Silver - broke out of a quick ball and turn one exploded).

It is what it is, but what a mood killer -__-

Just beat Wake I mean Crasher Wake with my Luxray and Infernape, taking a break then going after Fantina. I chose a good time to get Shinx. I didn't catch it until after Maylene, when I realized I needed something to deal with Cynthia's Milotic. Now I just need to do that with Riolu.

Or touch controls. But with me, it's fear of Joy-Con Drift. I've had four Joy-Cons undergo some amount of drift now. They've been repaired, but it's still a delicate setup.

Well, I caught a few more Legendary Pokemon in Ramanas Park. Apparently, both Latias and Mewtwo are practically free if you have them face a Dark Type. Those two can't do a thing to Dark Types and I just caught them both in a Premier Ball.

Started with another Shiny Stone hunt in the underground. Still nothing, but i got 2 Water Stones and another Armor Fossil. Then it was a trip from Oreburgh all the way back up to Floaroma town and Eterna City to toss Honey on every tree. Found out the Haunted House in Eterna Forest was basically wasted game data and empty. Then it was back down the Cycling road to level up Sword. By the time we reached Mt Coronet Sword was up to level 15. Explored Hearthome, and unlocked the Pokemon follow option. Tested out the Super Contests and it is the worst version of Contests. Moves dont have Contest moves anymore. We only use one move per contest, but it's just pressing A to the beat. So i don't know what the Moves do exactly. I think i won, but i dont think we get Ribbons anymore just stickers for Ball Capsules.

After that mess, i grabbed the Happiny Egg and Odd Keystone.

Made it to Hearthome City.

Tried out one of the contests via tutorial, the rhythm based one, and didn't do as bad as I thought I would.

Took on my rival yet again, beat him easily.

Seeing this makes me so frustrated with Gen2/HGSS.. With regards to the Dark-types..

I mean honestly, everybody knows that the Dark and Steel-types got introduced in Gen2 so that they could balance out the Psychic-type unbalance.

But then they put Houndoom, Murkrow, Sneasel and Tyranitar in the postgame (Sneasel was put in Ice Path in Crystal) and Scizor and Steelix behind a tradewall (which was a considerable wall in the physical play days pre-GTS). Basically the only Dark-type that you could use was Umbreon and the only Steel-types were Magneton, Forretress and Skarmory (albeit very late and not even available in Gold). So if you're playing Gold and can't trade you're left with slow Dark and Steel-type options that can hardly dish out - or Magneton and that's just sad in Gen2..

It's just so utterly weird. I mean Houndour evolves at level 24, why the heck did they put that it in the postgame?!? I get that Larvitar was left as postgame (especially considering the level-curve GenII had), but Houndour should've been able to be caught between Violet City and Azalea Town.. Burnt Tower would also be a great location.

And then they clearly realized their f-up, because we got Poochyena, Nuzleaf, Sableye/Mawile and Aron incredibly early in GenIII - and single stages like Absol weren't put in the final route before you take on the E4. Yes, Metagross once again as postgame, which is a shame, but I think Aggron is a suitable storymode-Steel-type which you can replace with Metagross during the Postgame (which lets be fair is too OP for storymode).

I think it’s like the ORAS contests where you only get ribbons for beating the Master Rank, while you get stickers for all of the ranks

Just to make sure you're aware, the Shiny stone, Dusk stone, and Dawn stone are not found in the Underground from digging. You need to use Pick up to get additional ones outside of the overworld ball capsule items.

Did ILCA buff Stone Edge in this game? I was catching a wild Solrock which was level 63 against my level 67 sceptile and that thing still took me down quite a bit.... from 190 to 4 HP in 2-Shots.

I thought Grass Types resist Rock moves or does Sceptile have terrible physical defense ?

I even had a few high level water starters pokemon during my rematch with Roark and stone edge was ridiculously powerful against Water them in these battles too.

I just made poffins and failed. I really wish it was touch screen like the original.
