Pokemon Emerald problem!

Im trying to trade from emerald to fir red but it says i cant because it can't trade at a time like this?! I have only just started so im only in petalburg city.Does anyone know why?

you need to beat the elite four first, you can only trade with other emerald games where you're at.

To add to KirbyXD's post:
You can ALSO trade with Ruby and Sapphire.

OH yeah, you have to beat the Elite 4 in Firered, too and get the National Dex.

9. Q: How do I trade with FR/LG?

A: You need to beat the E4 and get the National Dex in Emerald, and in FR/LG you need to do the same, plus fix Celio’s Network Machine.
