Pokemon Government?

Does the pokemon world have a Government? Its been puzzling my mind in english class and just want some opinions. The only type of government I could see in the pokemon world is the Elite 4 who maintain order, but in the manga they just F*ck everything up.

Any opinions?

yes i believe the pokemon world has not nessceserily a government but definate authority like with town mayors, pokemon rangers and officer jenny. All authority in pokemon is about keeping peace so therefore any peace keepers have more authority than others.

From what I see, the Pokemon World's main govenment is that of the Mayors of each town, with the International Police acting on some sort of group enforcement basis of a law that everyone seems to share, but nobody goes to decide on.

Well, there certaintly isn't any government in the games, well none that are talked about anyways.

There probably is, it's just that it wouldn't really help the games plot that much. It's probably the same as it is in the real world.

It seems to me that those who gain authority as pokemon trainers garner respect from those in the pokemon world. This accounts for Gym Leaders in their towns (notice how nobody recognises Brock as soon as he leaves Pewter), the Elite Four, Champions in their regions, and even wandering trainers such as Prima in the anime. ;)
There's also the police ie. Officer Jennies, regular policemen in the games (though in Sinnoh most of these seem to be hired by Mr. Backlot), the International Police.
It also seems that large organisations run individual cities and areas, for instance: Team Rocket in Saffron and Silph Co. in Rustboro.

Anyway, as with the question of pokemon religion, there is too little information in the games to draw any reasonable conclusion. This is largely because they're simply not needed in games that focus around individuals. The larger scale questions are for answering in fics (such as mine, which explores the conflict between corporations and the traditional rule of the Gym Leaders and Elite Four[/plug] :D).

Srsly.
The closest thing I think we've seen to government in the Pokemon world is that one Orange Islands episode with the Mayor and his Bulbasaur.
I guess mayors and the police are the closest things they have.

I figured the elite four acted as some kind of government. However, thinknig about how the protagonist always has to save everybody the elite four, due to their consistant failure, would have been overthrown. So in conclusion there is no law in Pokemon world. People with strong Pokemon just do as they please. You best hope that their heart is in the right place!

I surely believe that there is a Pokemon Government. Officer Jenny, Nurse Joy, Pokemon Rangers, Town Mayors, Rules and Regulations related to Pokemon battles and Pokemon Training... There HAS to be an authority to monitor them and assign such people.

i think it is just the elite four and the gym leaders who have govermental power(is that a word).

I'm sure there was a thread about this already but I'll repeat:

I think the pokemon world have the sort of system that the greeks had. Essentially, each city is its own country and basically runs itself however in times of war and other such important issues the region's cities will come together like socialism.

I think the mayors are in charge of the town generally and failing a mayor the gym, leader of chief of police, Head ranger etc will run things. Thats probably why everyone's so "all for one and one for all" in the pokemon world. Because the community has a large part in the running of the town/city. Internationally its probably headed by a summit of the elites or the internattional police. Or both.

Hello
I don't think they have a government, not a real one any how.
I think the Pokemon association just runs a few things but mostly lets things work out on it's own.

I like this thought.
I think so too, I think each town/city is responsible for themselves.
Don't forget that besides humans, pokemons in one way or another take part to protect their city/town, like Darkrai.
So humans and pokemons work as one unity in the government, after all its a pokemon world.

In the video games, barely, but there is a police officer in platinum. In the anime there probably is, because there's officer Jerry.

I think:
Cities are alone, they are independent and have certain jurisdiction over the roads around them, or the forest/monument/ landmark near or in it.

There are also Pokemon trainers which are a community that is forced to follow the code of the Pokemon HQ which means they have a code of conduit but only for those who have Pokemons. There is where law enforcement officers enter, when there is a pokemon related crime they get involved but otherwise is on the local jurisdiction or police.

Well in the anime the Elite Four and Gym Leaders seem to hold power like celebrities in some cases. But in others, they are helpful members of the community, but only to the citizens of the town and people who have met them. Otherwise, like in the case of Brock and Misty, people had no idea that they were gym leaders.

But meanwhile, there are town officials, such as mayors and policemen and stuff. For instance, the mayor of Hearthome city ran the double battle tournament. And if the pokémon world (which is based off of Japan so far) was in Anarchy, then it would be much less organized. If there was no government then the festivals and contests that are held, basically every time a main character comes to a town, would not take place.

And how are the mayors elected? There must be a similar democratic system to the one currently in Japan.

Hm... That's a good question. I suppose that it hasn't been brought up in the anime much because it's from the point of view of travelers. However, there must be some form of government. I've noted that the areas in the games and anime are called 'regions', not 'states' or 'countries' or what have you.

It's very difficult to say whether or not each region is under the same law and order as the others, because while they each have Jenny's and assorted police (in the anime, anywho) and Joy's, it's very difficult to say whether or not they are under the same Governmental organization. For all we know, Pokémon centers are run by the Pokémon world version of the Red Cross.

Sorry I don't really have anything helpful to say.
