One thing I'm super glad about is that this remake is one game. The originals were 2 versions, which means it will be very nice not having to deal with version exclusives. I also noticed the Lucario in the trailer, meaning we might have slightly more than 386 Pokemon, which is nice, even if it is just the evolutions and pre-evolutions.

I assume that Lucario will be more like a cameo character similar to how the original pair of PMD games had Lucario references in them. I'd be very surprised if Lucario is recruitable in this remake, though.

You must have missed the part of the trailer Lucario appears in.

If it weren't for this part of the trailer, no one would even be talking about Lucario in the first place. Lucario is clearly a part of the team in this shot. So unless this cameo you expect happens to be an escort mission or temporary team up, Lucario is fully integrated into the game.

Easygoing Luxray.
And by the way, someone spotted a Togekiss in the game, so it's not just Lucario.
You've mentioned that a couple times, but does that really matter much? How does you playing a Riolu conflict any more with that Lucario's story than you playing as a Charmander would conflict with Team A.C.T.'s Charizard?

Given, I am very interested in them turning the Lucario statue into a character, but I just can't figure out why that preclude Riolu from being playable.
Because none of the previous entries has had any of the starters' evolutions be very important to the main story. The other main characters were always Pokemon outside the player's choices.

And ACT's Charizard is pretty much a background character behind Alakazam.

I think you might be forgetting one of the most important main characters in Mystery Dungeon. Grovyle in Explorers. And yet you can still play as Treecko.

And honestly, not sure if I would expect them to turn Lucario into a main character. Would be cool, but would also require significant changes to the story.

In a strange (and mildly disturbing) sort of way, Treecko is kind of the most appropriate Pokemon for the main character to become. It was never fully explained why the PC transformed into a Pokemon, but given that it was a result of Darkrai attacking them and Grovyle during time travel, it could possibly be that the player's "essence" or "spirit" or whatever partially fused with Grovyle's, and that was responsible for their tranformation into a Treecko. It's not much, but in other cases you're left with the PC transforming because the plot needs them to transform (which logically speaking is probably the case, but I like to fill plot holes and Mcguffins with at least plausible explanations wherever possible).

Although it's my headcanon that the Voice of Life from Gates is the voice that speaks to you at the beginning of every PMD game (with the exception of PSMD, where it's later revealed that the voice at the beginning of the game is Mew's), and represents some sort of fate-like force that brings you to the Pokemon world and then guides your journey. For whatever reason they decide you're better off as a Pokemon than a human (maybe they decide that you'd be more capable of fighting the opponents you'll need to fight as a Pokemon, or maybe humans simply can't exist in the Pokemon world for extended periods of time, and transforming you into a Pokemon is a workaround to this), and Darkrai's attack on you and Grovyle in PMD2 was simply the most convenient opportunity to transform you. If the latter is the case, that also explains another mild plot hole that I noticed; if Darkrai's attack would have killed Grovyle, who can survive Flamethrowers and Draco Meteors and Rock Slides by getting knocked out at worst, surely it would have killed you, a squishy human being, and yet it didn't. Maybe the Voice of Life protected you from Darkrai's attack. The alternative is that you survived the attack by sheer willpower alone, which given that it's a Pokemon game isn't really out of the question either.

Anyways, kind of went off topic there, what are people's thoughts on the artstyle for these new games? It seems to be a blend of the new 3d graphics style that was present in Gates and PSMD and the old pseudo-hand-drawn style from the first two installments. There's a weird sort of papyrus-like quality to the coloring that I find particularly interesting, as it wasn't present in the original games, but was in many of the pieces of official artwork for them.

I'm not really a giant fan of remake games that are heavy stylized in order to be a literal representation of the older game. If we're bring the game into the modern era, let's bring the art style there too. What works with sprites and pixel art doesn't necessarily work with 3D models. The DS Mystery Dungeon games looked great with the style. This one not so much. This is the same way I felt about Link's Awakening art style as well.

I've never played the Mystery Dungeon games, and I don't know a huge amount about them beyond the player character is a human who gets turned into a Pokemon, but I may buy Rescue Team DX and give it a try. The trailer in the Pokemon Direct made it look like a pretty fun game (again, this coming from soneone who knows nothing about Mystery Dungeon so has no real frame of reference), and seeing Mega Charizard X pop up makes me happy that Mega Evolution isn't completely dead yet. Or at least not in spin-offs.

I tend to agree. While it looks neat as a still image, I think the new graphics are going to look quite jarring when they're actually animated. I'm not even sure it's a fair defense to call them a literal representation, because the original games didn't have that weird oil-painting-like quality to them that seems to be present in the screenshots of these games. It seems like a really strange choice to take the artstyle in that direction and I don't think I overly like it.

Hello how many generations will there be

By that I assume you mean up to what generation will there be Pokemon from, right?

The answer to the question is unclear. Right now it's looking like it's up until Gen III with some special exceptions from Gen IV. We've seen Lucario and Togekiss so far. This could mean they'll just bring in the newer evolutions of old Pokemon, plus throw in Lucario due to its cameo in the original game. Though it's also possible that later generation Pokemon appear later in the game.

I agree that the artstyle is very odd. I played the demo and honestly judging from both it and the trailer it feels very jank when they try to make 3D models move like sprites would. Not only is the combination of the 3D models and the watercolor backgrounds jarring, I feel often times the backgrounds are too desaturated or washed out in comparison to the original.

Also I think the texture on the pokemon themselves is disgusting and makes them look liked dirty flocked toys, there is no reason a Butterfree's wings should look so covered in filth. These pokemon are civilized and I would like to believe they bathe.

This is just a demo. They will fix it in the full game for sure.

Why would the demo have different graphics from the final game? It's pretty clear that the graphics, whether you like them or not, are a stylistic choice made on purpose. Even ignoring that, with the game coming out in just over a month, there's not really any time for them to make a massive graphic overhaul.

The demo got data-mined and only portraits for Gen 4+ evolutions of old mons were uncovered (plus Riolu's line). Interestingly, some Gen 4+ moves are included.

I don't mind the picture-book background art style. The static texture over the models is OK, I'll get use to it.

My problems are with the 3D model animation.

The walk cycle animation for some of the quadruped starters is absolute garbage. If I do get the game, I'll have to play as Cubone or Torchic or something; at least they move somewhat naturally.

It's really jarring when the portrait emotes, but the models look on with a vacant stare.

And couldn't they actually animate the pokemon checking the mail? Is that gonna crash the game or something? Guuuuhhhghg.
