Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet - General Discussion/Speculation Thread

Satoshi & Touko

Peanuts aren't just a nut.
It's hoopaning! Tomorrow's reveal is gonna weigh heavily into how optimistic or pessimistic I feel about how much overall content these games are going to have. The 6/5 SwSh trailer was a monster, so if the ScVi trailer isn't at least that level, I'm going to be very concerned. Especially since in the end I found SwSh to be lackluster.

I hope they reveal the new Rotom form. I said it before, I'll say it again, best form of worldbuilding right there. I'm hoping for a Rotom ipad.

I'm also excited to read the information on the new Pokemon on the website. The lore is so interesting.

Probably said already but, I'm surprised this isn't a Pokemon Presents. But it makes sense considering all the updates for GO, UNITE, TCG, anime and merch we're already shown beforehand.

Expecting the usual first info: box art, box legends, release date, rival, professor, at least 1 gym leader, regional gimmick, and at least 2 early route Pokemon.

But most importantly, really excited to finally know the region's name.

How annoyed would you be if when we get the trailer tomorrow if we still don’t find out the name of the region. lol XD

Haha. Imagine a full 5-10 min trailer that never mentions the region's name at least once. Not even published on the official website nor in any press release kit.

I'm not expecting this game to have Gyms.

Regardless, they will still probably show at least one"type specialist" NPC. And I hope it's not Rock or Grass/Water/Fire.
I don't even think they'll have those, as I believe that they'll go for tournaments instead.

Well, Legends Arceus didn't, as the Nobles didn't have a type specialty.
Yeah, but Arceus was before the invention of gyms so lore wise that made perfect sense. I can't believe that there wouldn't be some type of special type NPCs of some kind.

Junichi Masuda has stepped down as the Managing Director of GAME FREAK.
He is now appointed as the Chief Creative Fellow of The Pokemon Company.

So, perhaps SV is less traditional in its approach now. New era of Pokemon I guess? SV could either be handled by Shigeru Ohmori (ORAS/SM/SWSH) or Kazumasa Iwao (USUM/Legends) now. There's also Shigeki Morimoto (Emerald/HGSS) and Takao Unno (B2W2).

I believe Hop was also revealed in the trailer. He could've been revealed on the website beforehand (I can't remember), but he also showed up in that second trailer with everything else you mentioned. As for the gym challenge, Milo was specifically shown, so maybe we'll get the first gym leader for SV tomorrow too! And hopefully the rival- I really wanna see them.
We also got Magnolia and Sonia (from what I remember).

not really, SV is mostly done by now. I suspect they are only bug fixing, polishing, and adding in the last few features at this point. Gen 10 on the other hand, might end up significantly influenced by this.

On reflection of the news we have had had for S/V, and the games we've played in the series the last couple of years, (SW/SH, PLA, etc), I feel strongly that there needs to be a central Stadium/Coliseum game once more, primarily for competitive battling and for simply adding the new Pokémon to the roster for each generation. Like Pokémon Home but for the express purposes of online battling.

By splitting it out from the adventure portion of the games, there could be scope for having all of the Pokémon available to battle with. By adopting different rulesets in tournaments like the original stadium games, you bring a bit of the strategy back more too.

I suspect we won't see something like that with the announcement of Scarlet/Violet, but I would like to see something along this development line in future.

Maybe Scarlet/Violet will build on some of the better aspects of recent generations - I enjoyed Galar's stadiums immensely, harking back to the football stadiums of Britain as well as bringing back something of that Pokémon Stadium feel.

Pokémon battles for me have always been a bit about the "event" feel - and playing out battles in a stadium really add to the gameplay.

So who knows? Maybe we will see some gyms and stadiums again in a new way.

Just spotted something I said back in 2016 about alternate forms for Pokémon. I mentioned Sneasel and Zoroark specifically! weird how you can be spot on the money in some ways without any prior knowledge.

There are so many good, excellent ideas I have seen from Sun and Moon. Alolan forms are a brilliant idea. The potential for new typings and looks to older Pokemon was a stroke of genius. The early revealed ones - Sandslash, Nineties - all brilliant ideas. They should have gone further - maybe ten, or fifteen from each generation previous to add to the Alolan sexes with new Alolan forms. Imagine Sneasel as a Fighting/Dark type or maybe Flygon as Fire/Dragon. What about Zoroak as a Fairy/dark type? The possibilities were endless and what we actually got were a surprising number of additional dark types.

I know we didn't get those typings but...points for effort!
