MECHANICS & GAMEPLAY FEATURES
  • OPEN WORLD // The game utilizes full-scale models of characters and Pokemon in a full seamless open-world setting.
    • The world can be explored at your own leisure and not in an order dictated by the story.
      • But areas are numbered on the map, which likely corresponds to difficulty.
    • There is only one loading zone in the whole region: Mesagoza.
    • Pokemon react to weather and environment (such as Farigiraf running in circles during the rain).
    • The Day/Night cycle is no longer tied to the system clock, similar to Legends: Arceus.
      • A full cycle now only lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes in real-time.
    • At Pokemon Centers, there is a guy that gives out quests (such as beating a certain number of nearby opponents in a set time).
      • There is no quest log that tracks your sidequests.
    • If you crouch while running, you can slide.
    • Battles are seamless. During battles, the field is the exact same scenery where you stood. Pokemon and people in the background will remain as is and still move independently. Even wild Pokemon can spectate.
    • Aside from approaching Pokemon, you can also start battles by aiming and throwing your lead Pokemon at it.
      • You can also start battles while mounted on Koraidon/Miraidon.
    • Targeting the Pokemon on the overworld will show its name and level.
    • You can sneak up on Pokemon by crouching to catch it unaware. You can also get a small boost at the start of the battle.
    • You can move the camera during battles at will, but you cannot move your trainer around.
    • Trainers will no longer lock eyes and force you into battles, instead you have to manually talk to them.
      • However, a League Member on Pokemon Centers will reward you with new TMs based on the number of Trainer battles you had.
    • The Drowsy status from Legends: Arceus return.
    • Horde Battles return.
    • There is no level scaling. But EXP scaling is still in the game.
    • Shiny Pokemon can be seen on the overworld.
    • You can set up your own waypoints on the map.
    • Items and Tera Raid Dens are indicated on the map.
    • You can access your Pokemon Storage anytime.
    • You can select and heal your Pokemon instantly. The game automatically selects potions from your bag.
    • The in-game menu is more streamlined. Your party is on the left, while the Bag, Settings, Save and the Poke Portal (connectivity features) are on the right.
  • TERASTAL PHENOMENON // This is a new battle mechanic where Pokemon shine and glimmer like gems.
    • When a Pokemon Terastallizes, a Tera Jewel appears above the Pokemon’s head like a crown, and the Pokemon’s body turns into a gem.
    • Each Pokemon has its own Tera Type which activates when they Terastallize. Some Pokemon have Tera Type that are different than its usual type (i.e. an Eevee with a Flying Tera type).
    • Pokemon can Terastallize once per battle.
    • The transformation only lasts until the battle ends.
    • When a Terrastallized Pokemon uses a move that matches its Tera Type, that move will gain a boost in power.
      • Same-type Terastallization bumps STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) from 1.5 to 2x.
      • If you change type, you still keep the original STAB (1.5).
    • The Tera Orb is a key-item that allows the use of Terastallization.
    • Tera Blast is a new Normal-type move that changes type based on the user's Tera Type.
      • It can be learned through a TM.
      • It can only be used when a Pokemon is Terastallized.
      • It inflicts damage using the Attack or Sp. Atk stat - whichever is higher for the user.
    • Some wild Pokemon can be found shining on the overworld. These Pokemon are able to Terastallize.
    • Wild Tera Pokemon will not despawn if you run from them, unlike normal wild Pokemon.
  • TERA RAID BATTLES // These are new Raid Battle format that allows you to team up with 3 other players.
    • In these battles, you face Terastallized wild Pokemon within a time limit.
      • When a player is knocked out, 2 minutes are taken away from the 10-minute timer.
    • You can also attack without waiting for other Trainers’ turns.
    • You can only Terastalize your Pokemon after three normal attacks.
    • You can attempt a Tera Raid Battle by touching shining crystals. The colors of these crystals correspond to the Tera Type of the Tera Pokemon you’ll find.
    • Online Tera raids still required a code to enter. But you don't need people on your friends list to join a raid, unlike SWSH.
    • Around Paldea, there are rare black Tera Raid Crystals that contain very special Pokemon. These are unlocked post-game.
  • LET'S GO // A new feature that allows you to send the Pokemon currently following you off in the direction you indicate. Then it picks up and Auto-Battles nearby wild Pokemon.
    • Auto-Battle, as the name implies, is a new feature allows you to battle wild Pokemon and Trainers (only during Team Star quests) automatically.
      • Auto-battles will not differentiate normal Pokemon with Shiny Pokemon.
      • EXP gained from Auto-Battles are significantly lower.
  • PICNICS // Picnics allow you to spend leisure time with your Pokemon. You can give them a bath, play, take photos with them, or make sandwiches to raise your bonds.
    • To create sandwiches, first you have to select the ingredients and condiments. Then you have to arrange it by stacking properly. These sandwiches can restore HP, increase powers of specific Types, or even increase chances of encountering and/or catching Pokemon of specific types. It can also boost shiny rates or chances of encountering small/huge Pokemon.
    • During picnics, you might sometimes find a Pokemon egg.
    • You can also customize the designs of the tablecloth, cups, water bottles, and other picnic items.
    • Other players can join picnics through the Union Circle.
  • TM MACHINES // Pokemon Centers now have machines that allow you to create your own TMs using your own resources and League Points (LP). LP can be obtained as you advance the story or by trading in materials you obtained from Pokemon. You can also exchange your LP for materials in return. LP can also be used to purchase items.
    • Materials must be obtained first in order to know what's needed when crafting TMs.
  • RIDE POKEMON // Koraidon/Miraidon can be ridden and will serve as the player's primary mode of transport in land, sea and air.
    • Sprinting Build (Koraidon) / Drive Mode (Miraidon) allows fast travel by land.
    • Swimming Build (Koraidon) / Aquatic Mode (Miraidon) allows travel by water.
    • Gliding Build (Koraidon) / Glide Mode (Miraidon) allows travel by air.

  • ROTOM PHONE // The Rotom Phone returns as your companion. It contains apps such as the Pokedex and the map.
    • The Rotom Phone case can be customized.
