Pokemon Taxonomy

Taxonomy is a system of classification applied to the living organisms of Earth. The classification is based on the common characteristic that the organisms share, but those characteristics must have been adquired by a common ancestor, so the taxonomy also show us the the ancestral relationships between species. It also uses the famous "binomial nomenclature (scientific name)" to nominate each species, using two words (the fist one is the genus, the second one, the species) that generally are in latinized greek or pure latin.
So what about applying taxonomy in the Pokemon world??? I´ve made an entire list of all Pokémon giving to each one scientific name. Due to the fact that in the Pokemon world, Pokemon are not all the living beings in the planet, i´ve nominated them with scientific names that doesn´t exist in the real world ,to not breaking the law of Taxonomy that tell us that "no different species could have the same name". OK, before people began suggesting the problem of the Grass types, I´ve decided that EVERY Pokemon is under the Animal Kingdom (Animalia) due to the fact that all of them can move, all of them lay eggs etc, even grass types, doesn´t matter if the have leafs, vines, etc, they´re more animals, the behave like animals, reproduce like animals and eat like animals. Simply imagine that they´ve suffered convergent evolution and that´s why they have many plantish features. So I made a new Phylum in the Animal Kingdom dedicated only for Pokemon, I call it Pokemonia, and this phyllum, like every other, is split into classes, then orders, then families, and then genus and species. I´ve also used the Tribe taxon (Tribe is a group between family and genus that isn´t commonly shown) just to group the Pokemon of the same evolutionary line (Like charmander, charmeleon, and charizard).
The Phylum Pokemonia contains basically any kind of Animal that have a cell structure capable of being transformed into some sort of radiation and data, making them able to be stored into some sort of transport device (Pokeball). Another characteristic of the members of the Phyllum Pokemonia is the ability to reproduce with other species, however, the offpring will always be of the female´s species. Based on the reproductive compatibility, a classification system was established, the EGG GROUPS, however, that classification is not always compatible with the real system of Taxonomy, ´cause for ramdom evolution events, Pokemon have developed some genes that make´em able to reproduce with others that have developed similar genes, but they´re not necessarily acestrally related. SO that´s why I didn´t use the egg group system to make my real taxonomical system. First I´ll post scientific names, and later I´ll post their respective classes, orders, families and tribes, so here we go.

How about putting the meaning beside the name?

such as:

Aerodactyl - Aerodactylus fossilis - [Air Finger Fossil]

Aipom - Johtopithecus longicaudus - [Johto primate long tail (or) Long-tailed primate of Johto]

Look at Slowbro, might need editing.

And I believe this has been done before, but I like this. I've been wondering the same thing.

EDIT: So then are you suggesting that evolved pokemon are from different genera?

Yeah, I gave different genera even to Pokémon of the same evolutionary line, however, like I said in the main post, I´ll use the Tribe Taxon (which I´ll post later along the Classes, Orders and Families) to group the Pokemon of the same evolutionary line.
And about putting the meaning beside the name, yeah its a good Idea, but how about letting people to decipher them just like you did, and then I´ll edit the list an put the meaning of the deciphered ones, to make things funner.

Oh yeahn I need to edit Slowbro, could you help me to give it a new name??

Wow. WOW! Some of those names are purely *awesome* like "Magnifalco".

I can see you've worked really hard on this. Keep up the good work!

Okay, Deciphering's fun! lol. But after someone reasonably guess it, you should edit the list so more people aren't going to continually guess the same one (let other pokemon get a chance)

As forf slowbro: anything to do with Hippos and Hermit Crabs (perhaps even something about their symbiosis)?

Exactly, I´ll edit the list and put the meaning beside Altaria, and I´ve also made the list of the Unown subspecies, one subspecies per Letter. I´ve also edited Slowbro´s name, it´s now Cyllarus sederus

Well, good try, but you missed some words, Toxacanthus globus, Toxo (toxic or poison)+Acanthus (thorn) and yeah, globus is balloon, so its Poison thorned balloon, and you almost deciphered Jynx, but you forgot the hominiformis word, and Boreo isn´t actually "ice".

Praetor, yes, Persian is classic cat, and Lunatone is "Moon rock piece", but anyways you got the idea, but Squirtle isnpt hairless turtle, there is no word in the binomial name meaning hair or less. Keep trying.

I´m still working in the Classification of the classes, orders and families, in a few days I´ll post it.

<-Don't wake him up!
Wow, I'm speechless with the classifications. Impressive; it appears that you have the mind of a scientist, and it must've taken you ages to do that. But that's only one part of the taxonomy> the species b/c you you also have Domain,Kingdom,Phylum,Class,Family,Order,Genus, and of course species.
But well done I suppose. I didn't read it all. Too much for me to read.

Cool, but Pokemon cannot be put under animals, either as a kingdom or as a different life base altogether. The phyllums would be the different types, I guess. Also, what does the first part of lugia's name mean? and what does Charybdis have to do with it?

Dr. MECha

Prof. of Pokeology
I was glad that some finally give those pokemons scientific names so that it'll make even more sense that every species of monsters where named differently in different nations in the Pokeworld (just like here in the real world). Though I rather name the Phylum Monsters (or a lantin word for it) rather than Pokemonia, due to the fact Pokemon was originally named Pocket Monsters. It also because that they represent generic RPG Monsters and Enemies which is why they got the name in the first place.

But It still a great list and all of them might be included in the pokedex along with all the name from different nations. Though it'll be nice if you also list what each universial names ment in eglish, so that we can get a better understanding of it.

Lugia: Argyrodytes charybdis

Argyros=silver, dytes=diver, and charybdis is a sea monster in the greek mithology that swallows ships with whirpools, Lugia is a sea monster and can make whirpools, that´s why I gave it that name.

So Lugia is "silver diving monster". I´ll edit the list putting Lugia´s meaning, but common, I want you to decipper as many as you can, that´s the fun of it, and then I´ll be editing the list as you people decipher the meanings.

And..... no, if you group Pokemon by types in taxonomy it would not work, cause some pokemon have two types and it would mean that it would have to be into two taxons (groups) at the same time, and that cannot happen in taxonomy, same goes to the egg groups system. Just assume that types are just characteristics that were adquired separatedly (convergent evolution).

Yeah, Charizard is "flamming fire dragon", I´ll edit the list

I don´t get references online, the 99% of the list was created by me, Oddish´s name was taken from the FR/LG Pokedexn and Pikachu, Mareep and Slowpoke were taken from Kyogre´s Lair, the rest were all made by me by my knowledge of greek and latin words and the laws to combine them, that´s because I like a lot the real taxonomy. But some words that I didn´t know were taken from an english - greek/latin dictionary that I have.

Oh, I like this thread. Even if I don't know what all the names mean, they still look pretty cool. It would have taken myself ages to compile such a list; kudos on the hard work.
