Political correctness

I think this is more of a discussion thread than a debate thread. If a mod disagrees and wants to move it then that's fine.

Most people should know what politcial correctness is. People being banned from saying the word "black" because it "could offend people". Parents being banned from smacking their kids. Etc.

Has anyone here had any experiences with political correctness? At home, work, school, etc?

IT'S POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAAAD. MAAAAAAAD.

Tbf, the whole idea of political correctness has been blown out of proportion by papers like the Mail and the Express in the UK. Admittedly people are becoming a bit too wary of insulting someone by accident, but it's not as bad as people are making it out to be and I wish they'd stop. Half the people doing it are racists and abusive parents and the like who are butthurt because they can't be prejudiced or beat the living daylights out of children any more.

Ehhh, go and watch Russell Howard on YouTube, his views are the same as mine so it saves me time and text. Here he is talking about the kind of people I mean, just to start you off.

And no, I have never had any experiences of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAAAAD because , as I say, it's not remotely common.

*waits for bashing*

Down with the conservative media.

Parent's smack their children all the time, but there's a line between discipline and abuse which some parents cross, but a majority of the time it's just discipline, if you get put in jail for this, it's way too much.
As far as being called black, people are too sensitive about race that's all there is to that, you shouldn't get in too much trouble for it. I myself have never been involved in political correctness, not that I can remember.

These days nearly everything has been ruined by political correctness, or the 'nanny plague', as I call it. Today's adults have become ridiculously paranoid, like "oh noez a tiny germ! My child's going to die!" or "oh noez a swordfight! If my kid sees that he'll grow up to become a criminal!"

BTW, I don't know much about the Miscellaneous Discussion in this forum, but I believe the Debate Forum is a good place for this thread.

Ehhh, go and watch Russell Howard on YouTube

Great comedian, my second favourite after frankie boyle

Anyway I've never really had any problems with political correctness to be honest, at least none that come to mind.

I think political correctness is a good thing. People get offended less, and thus happier. Not sure what the problem with people being happy is. If you want to not be politically correct, go on the internet.

Political correctness is necessary to an extent. When communicating to a wide audience, it is important not to offend them or you will possibly offend an entire audience. That's never good.

.. However, there is a point where it does go too far. Political correctness can ruin the overall argument or message a person is trying to get across by making it too soft. In fact, it's hard in general to point out shortcomings and drawbacks of anybody without offending them; and that's not political correctness sometimes, that's just plain people not wanting to see themselves at fault.

You're not afraid of politically correctness, are you? ;)

Frankly, I've learned to not worry about being politically correct. I don't try to just go out and make people mad by offending them, but more often than not, something that you say about an important issue is going to offend somebody. So I just don't worry about it.

I think it ought to have been termed "diplomatic correctness." Politics is rarely ever involved in any kind of correctness.

More seriously, I don't mind it generally. There isn't much of an excuse to do or say something that is going to greatly offend other people when you have a perfectly inoffensive option at hand. As in everything, however, taking it to extremes only obstructs the point of it in the first place.

Political correctness can be chucked into a super high gravity location for all I care.

Oh, you haven't heard? http://www.impactlab.net/2007/06/22/...ffensive-name/

That's what black holes are called now.

that is just sad :/
black is a colour ffs! how do they want to call it then? -.- I don't mind political correctness usualy but there are times it just anoys me a lot :/ like not calling something
black because it 'offends' or may be 'racist' tbh the people changing the words are the
racists in that case considering they making something differend because of race.. while
90% of the people don't conect black hole with a black person..

I see your on Obama's side... Well... When the time comes to take him out I'll be happy to destroy you too. Damn Loyalist Liberal!!!
*forces you to take your tranquelizer* are you like OK seriously you know this actualy against the law?

I'm British. Which American politician I'm on the side of is completely irrelevant and threatening me gets you nowhere. If threats are all you have then you're clearly just a moron. Hardly giving your kind a good name, now, are we? Have a nice day.

Ok, I really need to know what's correct to say these days. Is it black or African-American? I'm not racist, but if you have to say it, which is it?

If you're talking to college teens, black.

If you're speaking in front of a seminar, African-American.
