With the portability of the Nintendo Switch and 3DS I started wondering something.

Do you prefer to physically own the game with case, and cartridge/disc? Or do you prefer to own them digitally so its easier to play?

I’ve always preferred getting games physically out of habit ever since I was younger, though I wouldn’t mind trying out more digital in the future. It’s always nice to look at the box arts and cartridges that I’ve stored at home. But it’s sad to see that physical instruction booklets have basically disappeared.

I mostly get physical, but sometimes, when digital comes with a physical version (i.e. Bayonetta), or when there is a special promotion (i.e. Club Nintendo back in the day), then I would get digital.

One exception is Animal Crossing New Leaf, since I didn't want to just plug in the game everyday.

Also, if the game is older, then the digital version is often cheaper, like with Virtual Console.

I almost always get physical. It's always nice to look at all my games in a shelf.

I only get digital version if there isn't physical version or the digital version is significantly cheaper than the physical one (ex. Shovel Knight).

  5. Darthlord7

All my PC games are digital but when it comes to consoles I almost always go for physical.

I usually get physical. Physical games have far more benefits than digital right now, you can resell them if you don't want them, you can share them with other games, they won't be unplayable if online services go down, they don't eat up as much storage space. I usually only buy digital if no physical version exists.

*Looks at video game collection, notices more physical games than digital* When it comes to purchasing games, I prefer going for physical games. For one thing, I like to be able to feel the game case. You can't feel a digital game.

I'd have to go with digital. You can't lose track of them because they're on the system itself.

Physical as they tend to be cheaper and I like to buy second hand pokemon games so I can get all their best mons.

  10. I have to buy PC games digitally because my laptop doesn’t have a CD player and most games for PC are steam-exclusive nowadays anyway, but other than that I almost always go with physical copies. I’ve often found that buying games physically is actually cheaper than digitally, especially when it comes to games like Akiba’s Beat (which due to obscurity lowered its price to £11-16 physically, while it’s still super expensive on PSN). I do want to clarify that I mostly buy physical copies of games through Amazon, and normally when I actually go out and buy a game in a shop it’s second-hand.

I've always preferred physical games to digital but now that with the Switchs portability in mind I think digital isn't a bad thing.

Figure I'll digitally purchase the games I know I'll want to replay. Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart, and Skyrim being a few examples. I'm even thinking of purchasing FE: Three Houses and Pokemon digitally to always have them on hand.

While I'll physically buy other games I know I'll only want to play once. After I'm done with them I can resell them online to get some money back. DK: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario Odyssey, LEGO City Undercover, etc...

I lean more towards physical since I prefer having a tangible collection. I don't mind buying something digitally if it's either out of stock everywhere, exclusively digital, or cheaper on the eShop/PSN Store.

For portable systems, Switch included, digital. For PS4, I prefer physical.

I've been slowly leaning more towards digital lately, because I just don't like not having games with me while I'm gone.

However, the physical copy is more assuring. If anything happens to the Switch, I still have the games, and vice versa.

I'm sad to see physical falling out of favor.

Putting a little too much faith in online storage always being a thing, I feel. Just what if it vanishes and then the games are gone? It just seems foolish to me.

Also, you know my favorite thing about having physical games for console, especially? I can play them, and uninstall everything but the save files (if I even still want them) after that and clear up all room on the system. Then any time I want, I can pop them back in and it's all back again. No need to have 8000 billion gigabyte upgrades to my hard-drive. It's so handy.

It's hardly falling out of favour, it got seven times more votes in the poll.
Hell, I've lost two of my pokemon games but I still voted physical.

Looking at the games I've played on my Nintendo Switch I'd say the ratio is Physical (75%) and Digital (25%).

Suppose the only games I do own digitally are ones I know I'll want to replay. Notable examples being Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Okami HD. Figure I can resell the physical games if I no longer have a desire to play them.

Going with physical, it takes up less space on the console and you will still have your games even if something goes wrong with your gaming system.

Ah, I should've elaborated I was meaning more with PC in that regard. Finding physical PC games now is almost as rare as finding gold pieces on the street these days thanks to Steam. And now PC games are basically set to one time use due to the fears of piracy and the like. Gone are the days you could just buy a disc and then pass it around.
Yet I can't help but feel consoles might follow suit eventually too, which I certainly don't want to see.

Ah, I can now see where you're coming from. I have way more pc games on steam than on disc but I do still have so discs. I doubt consoles will follow suit because consoles are used differently than pcs, but you could be right, time will tell.
