Popular Starters?

What were the popular starters from each generation where you lived, and which were the least popular? In my area, these were the dominantly chosen starters:
Kanto-Charmander
Johto-Totodile
Hoenn-Torchic
And these are the least popular:
Kanto-Bulbasaur, Squirtle is very close however.
Johto-Chikorita
Hoenn-Treeko
Personally, my choices are:
Kanto-Squirtle
Johto-Cydiquil
Hoenn-Mudkip
In Kanto, Charmander was the dominant choice, but Squirtle and Bulbasaur weren't far behind. In Johto, Cyndiquil and chikorita were both greaty ignore, but Chikorita was less popular than Cyndiquil, and in Hoenn, Treeko was hardly ever chosen.
The ratio of popularity I would say would have been:
Kanto
Charmander 40%
Squirtle 32%
Bulbasaur 28%

Johto
Totodile 85%
Cyndiquil 10%
Chikorita 5%

Hoenn
Torchic 80%
Mudkip 12%
Treeko 8%
I thought that Treeko would have been the popular one. I guess I was FAR off.

People aren't into Pokemon where I am anymore, so Hoenn's out of it. Kanto, I think was Squirtle actually, who I picked as an influenced kid at the time, and Charmander was close behind. As for GSC, it was like 3 people who played it. Me, who picked Cyndaquil but gave the others chances as well, and my mate, who was obsessed with Feraligatr (obviously picked Toto) and Ursaring, and someone else who picked Cyndaquil.

Treeko, at first, was the popular one becuse I first beat the game with Treeko, but some people, like me, seen how cool Blakien was/is and just use him. It is related to Groundon or Kyougre.

In my area, the fire type of each generation has been the most popular by a huge margin. And hardly anybody uses grass, except me. Water's somewhere in the middle. This general pattern has stayed consistent with each new set of games, and I expect it won't be changing in D/P.

In my place, not many play pokemon but here are these:
Kanto: Charmander - Everyone I know has chosen him as a starter.
Johto: Totodile - He was really popular, but Cyndaquil was really near.
Hoenn: Mudkip - Almost everyone has this one as his/her first pokemon, but I chosed Torchic...

I think that Charmander is the most popular starter, not only in place where I live, but everywhere.

People around my area have not been into pokemon for a long while, and I don't think many owned the games (they collected the cards), but I bet if they did have the 1st games Charmander would have been the main choice. Personally I prefer Squirtle, Totodile and Treeko.

Johto - Cyndaquil, then Mudkip
Hoenn - Treecko

Charmander and Totodile are most popular from their generation (Cyndaquil gives the latter a run for his money though), but the Hoenn starters seem tied.

Hardly anybody plays Pokémon around here anymore except nine-year-olds.

In the first one, there was no definite favorite among my friends. Some went with Charmander. Others with Bulbasaur. Others with Squirtle.

In GSC, Totodile was the preferred... somehow. A friend went with Cyndaquil and I went with Chikorita. The rest with Totodile.

In RSE, everyone went with Torchic.

Funnily enough, nobody I knew EVER picked Totodile except me. o.o They all picked Cyndaquil. Still everybody is saying Totodile was the most popular starter... Darn, I wasn't even original there...

Yes, most of the second generation picked Cyndaquil as their starter, probably because while watching the anime, they liked the fact that Ash had captured that Pokémon first and was quite powerful, so more and more people, including me, chose Cyndaquil. It's just falling under the spell of following Ash, I guess...also, the nine-year-old trainers like to choose the Fire-types because they are stronger. I don't blame them. Next to Dragon- and Ghost-types, they are some of the rarest Pokémon in the franchise.
