PS3 won't be getting Blockbuster hits if they go through with this plan.

Originally posted by ikachii at IGN

"SCE has secured the patent for a new disc technology that, if used, would not allow the PS3 to read used games for that platform. The technology was invented by Kutaragi himself, as well as two others

Details regarding the patent are featured here: http://www.ipdl.ncipi.go.jp/homepg.ipdl

It is indicated specifically that the technology is to prevent the use of used as well as pirated software

The technology involves actually rendering a authentication code originally encrypted on the game disk unreadable to other machines once the disk it is used

This would mean that Net-based and other such games will not be the only ones to be affected by the technology

Naturally third software developers would embrace this technology, and it would ensure sales of the inevitable "Best series" for the PS3, but used games shops would be put out of business if the PS3 were to become the primary platform in the next generation

While information regarding the patent does not specify outright that the technology will be used in the PS3, Kutaragi has gone on record saying that copy management is absolutely necessary in order to endure that no "Napsters" of the game industry create problems in the future "
I for some reason don't think Sony is stupid enough to go through with this but, if they do well that seals the deal for it not maintaining its grip on the video game market.

That's Sony for you, a pioneer in anti-piracy technology. Only they've gotten a little to far in saying "One game per person, period." This also means you can't borrow games either.
yeah I know and if your PS3 breaks your totally screwed.

I prefer Microsofts anti-piricing methods. They just write "do not make illegal copies of this disc" on all the games.

Haha, you won't be able to rent games either. What a gigantic load of stupid.

LOL, how would that work, anyway? You wouldn't be able to rent or borrow games, and what if you lost your disk? That's such a dumb idea.

Wow. This just made PS3 go from my "If I've got $450-$500 to blow" to my "never" list.

Sony PS3 is becoming like another TPM (Trusted platform module) that limits you severly on music, software, and etc. It's the same thing like that. If sony is to do that, noone wants to buy it because there are people who want to rent the game before they buy one. Now thats become impossible so the person will not know if the game is good or not.

also I found out it is working with the entire blue ray format so that I don't think many places will support blue ray altogether then.

Calm down everyone. Even though the thing is patented, that does not mean they will use it on the PS3. The first sentence in the first post said:

PS3 won't be getting Blockbuster hits if they go through with this plan.

Aww... Crap.
what if you lost your disk?
It says that a disk will only be able to be played in one system, not that a system can only play one copy of the disk. Sony would like it if you had multiple copys of a game.

Meh, I didn't plan on getting a PS3...so, meh.

If that new technology actually goes through, it would be the dumbest thing to come out. It would mean that no one can rent games and not only that, if someone wanted to show a friend a cool PS3 game (not necessarily loan it), that means they'll have to drag their PS3 along, even if said friend has a PS3.

Pretty much, I think the technology is pretty dumb.

Omg... that sucks... this is a load of bull. It really takes a lot of flavor out of getting the PS3. I might but if they go through with this... well lets just say my feelings on this system will drop to a new low...

Yep! If they do...I will unfortuantely have to get a Xbox 360 for Sonic The Hedgehog....and I don't want to do that too!

I just hope they release Sonic on the Rev... then I'll be happy. :)

I wasen't planning to get 360 but I may now, seeing as PS3 won't be that great now and 360 may have a lot more going for it. I bet Sony loves the idea though, we can't rent games, we just have to buy a new copy, we can't get cheaper used copies, we always have to get a new one, we can't borrow from a friend, etc. But I know quite a bit of people who just won't buy the PS3 now...

Hopefully Sony will rethink this idea. They still got to next year not to use it but still...the very idea of this stinks.

Braaiiiiiinss......
If this things goes in the PS3, then I don't wanna say it, but....

Kill Kutaragi! (Not really, though.)

Well...really if they don't want people to pirate it and such maybe they could be like Nintendo as well in their anit piracy technology? For a small Gamecube compared to the big PS2...is sure is smarter.

I highly doubt that this statement is completely true. Most of game sales come through public rentals like Blockbuster, so Sony would have lost money by making this move.

No this is an affect from the blue ray drive. also even G4TV was talking about it on one of their shows
