Arle Nadja all the way...except for her dub voice in Puyo Pop Fever, what's with the speech impediment? "Aith Thtorm!"
I can name the major Puyo Puyo puzzle games that I've played. There were also RPGs, a dancing game and strategy game but I never played them due to the fact that import CD games are ridiculously high.
Puyo Puyo (Famicom/MSX computer)- These were standalone, Carbuncle was in the game but none of the human characters.
Puyo Puyo (Arcade/Mega Drive/Super Famicom/PC-Engine)- This was the first competitive Puyo Puyo game, introduced Jama (Obstacle or Garbage) Puyo, and recurring characters such as Arle Nadja: a magician girl as Carbuncle's owner, Draco Centaur: an ultra vain dragon girl obsessed with challenging other girls in beauty contests and Satan: a flamboyant villain. Among many others to follow up in future games such as Schezo Wedgey, a bumbling swordsman, Seriri a mermaid who wants to make friends but is paranoid of others trying to eat her and Rulue, Arle's main rival.
Puyo Puyo Tsuu [sounds like 2, means 'master'] (Arcade/Mega Drive/Super Famicom)- This Puyo Puyo game had many opponents faced in a Tier system. The opponents you faced were strictly by choice. This was also the first in the series to feature Offsets (countering Jama Puyo by making a chain or chain combo). It also had a 4-player mode. This was the game where the Puyo Puyo theme comes from (when you challenge Arle in Puyo Pop Fever or the Puyo Pop theme in GBA).
Puyo Puyo SUN (Arcade/Saturn/N64/PlayStation)- This is a play on words. The English word for "Sun" is pronounced as "San" meaning the number 3. This game added a bonus "Sun Puyo" that adds to your Jama Puyo in a chain. You play in 3 scenarios representing a different difficulty and different length of play. Draco is easy with a short quest, Arle is normal with a long quest and Schezo is hard with a moderate quest. The story involved the sun being too hot because of Satan.
Puyo Puyon (Dreamcast/PlayStation/N64)- Again, "Yon" means "4" continuing the whole number wordplay. This had much more matured character designs than the last 3 Puyo Puyo games and brought a few more elements into gameplay. Namely the special attack system, by pressing a terciary button (I played the N64 version so it's usually the C buttons, it could be Triangle on PSX and Y on Dreamcast) your character will use a special attack that can anything from cleaning up all the Jama Puyo, changing all the Puyo into a single color or disabling your opponents drops. There was also a buddy system in the story mode, allowing you to change your characters before a Puyo Battle (mostly for their special attacks). I really liked that in the story mode because the funny part is when Seriri joins your group (Arle's like "W-what?! You're coming with us?!" It's priceless...). If you can, try to get the DreamCast version, the load times are better.
