Question about 360 controllers and pc gaming

So I'm recently delving into the world of pc gaming. But as a primarily console gamer I am not as accustomed to the keyboard/mouse setup. I'm playing some games with it and it is ok but I still prefer a controller and I have a 360 controller and went out and bought a cord to hook it up to my pc (a Plug-and-Play kit). and I have been having some trouble with my controller not working. It turns on but doesn't work on any of my games (Portal 2, AC3, and GMod) I was wondering if there is any way to get it to work.

For some strange reason that only Microsoft can come up with, this is actually "normal" behaviour. The Wireless 360 controller needs a device to connect to a PC. This is one of them: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Wirele...USB+Gaming+Receiver+for+Microsoft+XBOX+360+PC

I personally use wired 360 Controllers. (I actually have two.) I know that Portal 2 works fine, but the Level editor may need keys and Mouse. Both GMod and Assassin’s Creed 3 have Partial Controller support, which means you may need your keyboard to set up the game.

I thought you could use the Wired controller if you used one of the charger wires from the Plug-and-Play kit.
