Question about EV training

Hi everybody, I have a situation and I need a little help.
I've bred Hitmonlee with Ditto twice to get two Tyrogue eggs. The first was hatched with highed defense than strength, so I grew him to level 20 and so that he evolved into a Hitmonchan. Now, the second one was also born with higher defense, but in order for him to evolve into Hitmontop, both defense and strength have to be equal. So I read up on EV training and battled against a handfull of mankeys and ekans, enough so that when he gained a level, as far as I understand, he should have gained two extra effort points to strength. But he didn't. I tried this a few times, but it isn't working. He's now level 17 with his defense still higher.
I'm probably misunderstanding something important about EVs, so I was wondering if anybody could offer some advice. Or, should I just keep hatching eggs until I get one with equal stats?

When you EV train, you won't get the stats right away. You trained it so that it would get 8 EV points, right? Well, usually if it is low-level, you won't get the points right away, but in the long run you will still get them. What I would do is fight more Pokemon that will raise it's attack until they're equal (they will be eventually), then give evolve it.

Alright, that clears things up. I guess I'll jam him full of as many strength points as I can within 3 levels... or give him the everstone.
Thanks for your help

No! lol. Don't EV train him. Just use the correct drugs until he has the right attack. Then Ev train him ;)
