Question about Physical/Special Attacks

I'm a little confused as to how this works. Is a physical attack any attack that physically touches the opponent (e.g. low kick), and if so, would thunderpunch be considered a special or physical attack? Thanks in advance!

It's electric so it's special. Electric is special but it's not the same for D/P.

In the 3rd gen Special or Physical depends solely on the TYPE of move (Electric, Fighting, etc). This has changed in Diamond/Pearl to become completely confusing. :/
