Raising the best Dragonite.

Monk76

Student of Life
I've always been fond of dragon types and I wanted to raise a dragonite to use on my Emerald team for Battle Frontier. I'd like to focus on speed, special defense, and special attack. What nature, moves, and hold item would you suggest to make the best of these abilities? Thank you.

Could you be more specific? I'm not familiar with these abbrviations.

There are a lot of ways to go with Dragonite, it has such a good movepool. It is just a shame that it has Inner Focus as an ability. Still, there are a lot of ways to go with Dragonite.

Dragonite (special attacker)
Modest Nature

Ice Beam
Thunderbolt
Fire Blast/Flamethrower/Surf/Dragon Claw/Thunder Wave
Fire Blast/Flamethrower/Surf/Dragon Claw/Thunder Wave
@Leftovers.

Dragonite

Focus Punch
Substitute
Thunderbolt
Ice Beam/Flamethrower/Fire Blast
@Leftovers.

Although you want a special attacker, here is a physical attacking option.

Dragonite (physical attacker)
Adamant Nature

Aerial Ace
Earthquake
Brick Break/Thunder Wave/Roar
Dragon Dance
@Leftovers.

A lot of people will also mix up special and physical moves with their Dragonite, so that they will not be so one-dimensional.

As for those abbreviations, they stand for...

sub=Substitute
punch=Focus Punch
bolt/flame=Thunderbolt/Flamethrower
beam/claw=Ice Beam/Dragon Claw

I like the Dragon Dancing one the best. (IMO)
Dragonite@ Leftovers
Adamant Nature
Evs-252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 HP
-Brick Break
-Aerial Ace
-EQ
-Dragon Dance
But that just makes it pretty much a salamence...

Do you think it would be wise to have a physical attack even if it's a special sweeper?

Well, Dragonite has such a high attack stat, it can do decent damage even if it is a special attacker, and throwing a physical move in there can help Dragonite against Pokémon such as Blissey that are pretty much immune to special attacks. It doesn't really matter, you don't have to use a physical move if you don't want, it is just there as another option. ^_^ Dragonite is pretty a versatile Pokémon.

subpunching is dumb ingame, and Dragonite is not a special sweeper, with a base 134 atk, you should take advantage of that, use the dragon dance set, but if you want to use the sub/punch/boltbeam/flameclaw seet use a brave nature

sub-punching ingame can work

the only time focus punch seriously fails is expecting the switch

Sub Punching in game works the peice! But it seems to work best when the Subber goes last. This way the Sub isn't broken straight off, and you can get away with a Punch no matter what.

But still, go for your choice of Dragonite, cos as Sc1z0r PwN0rZ said, it is a very Versatile Pokemon.

The best nature for the kind of Dragonite you're looking for is Modest.
Here:

Dragonite@Leftovers or anything else.
Modest nature
Moves:
- Thunderbolt
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- SORRY - I forgot that Dragonite can't learn Calm Mind. Can't think of another one right now.

I think that the best nature for Dragonite is Adamant or anything that raises attack.

Next time could you not post Fake Movesets/Sharked movesets.

CBdraggy=win

Dragonite@Choice Band
Adamant Nature
Aerial Ace
Earthquake
Focus Punch
Ice Beam/Thunderbolt

Although FP tends to fail in-game so go for the DDset dude ;o

Of course, there's the option of Brick Break > Focus Punch if a Fighting-type move really is necessary.

I see a conflict of interest...

No.

CBdraggy=win >:O!

But that's for competitive means whereas for in-game, the DDset will be his best bet.
