wat is the point of this? btw red traded venusaur for charizard for flying purposes
i don't recall he traded Venasaur. I always thought it was his Gyarados that he traded with Green who used it when he was fighting Entei with Silver's Red Gyarados.

Also, there seem to be a pattern i spotted for the main character's starters.
Red-Grass (Bulbasaur)
Gold-Fire (Cyndaquil)
Ruby-Water (Mudkip)

It goes from Grass to Fire to Water. Just like the arrangement of the starters in the pokedex. Hence, there is a possibilty that in the next series, which is probably D/P, the starter would be a Grass type.

charmanderandswampertguy, I think you should at least give a reason as to why you think that should be the case, because there's no way a discussion could be carried on with just a statement without anything to support it.

Anyway, the writers actually have reasons for the starter choices of Red, Green and Blue. One major reason they stated was the colour balance for the characters. Red was the major character at that time, and since Red himself is wearing a red outfit, the writers didn't want to give him a red coloured pokemon. With his Poliwhirl taking up the blue colour, and Pikachu the yellow colour, they gave him Bulbasaur for the green colour.

I guess one other reason is, they wanted to reflect the original choices of the game designers, as even the character design of Blue was inspied by this game picture.

I don't think no-one's noticed this yet. Like what Mewbiraxys has pointed out, I've also noticed a pattern.

The male characters (Red, Gold and Ruby) chose Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil and Mudkip as their starters. The male rival characters (Green, Silver and Wally/Emerald) chose Charmander, Totodile and Treecko. And the female characters (Blue, Crys and Sapphire) chose Squirtle, Chikorita and Torchic.

My point is that all the main characters have chosen one of each type of starter. For Kanto it's Grass, Fire and Water; for Johto it's Fire, Water and Grass; and for Hoenn it's Water, Fire and Grass. It forms a balanced cycle.

And notice this, Green, Silver and Wally/Emerald have chosen the starters in the Dragon Egg Group. Once it goes back to Grass, Fire and Water for Diamond and Pearl (presumably), the male rival character will get the Dragon Egg group starter.

I thought that picture had them surrounded by their Pokemon's fully evolved forms?

I think that there were two pictures. One is the one Coronis posted up and there was another with the fully evoled forms.

I believe the other image you're talking about is this one, which appears at the end of Vol. 3, after the last chapter of the RGB series. I'm not sure if there are any official game pics like the one I posted before showing the fully evolved starters around Red, Green and Blue though.

Another thing to point out is that Squirtle, Chikorita and Torchic were considered to be the 'cuter' starters of each region respectively. The female trainer will probably get the 'cuter' starter of DP, me thinks. It's a weird theory, XD.

The Dragon-like starter goes to the rival, and the one left goes to the main character, me thinks. Like what Jack of Blades said. *points*

It is true, and hopefully the writers will follow the same sort of pattern for D/P (providing the new starters have those qualities)

No, that's not a weird theory at all. It's actually quite commendable and makes sense (do those two words mean the same thing?); girls love the cutie Pokemon. And because Dragon-types have few weaknesses, the rival being the strategist will choose that.

The main male protagonist will choose the one left because it's a balanced sweeper (is that right?) Venusaur can deal with Fire-types with Earthquake; Typhlosion deals with Water-types with Thunderpunch; and Swampert obviously has Ice Beam/Blizzard for Grass-types.

I always thought the main character of the series chose the starter that was the easiest to begin with in the games with Bulbasaur being the easiest in Kanto, Cyndaquil being the easiest in Johto, and the same for Mudkip in Hoenn.

Emerald isn't a main male hero really. He is more the Yellow/Crystal of Hoenn as he is on his own quest.
