Anime references in other Pokemon media. Name them!

I'll start with my over-talked about favorite one lol, Pokemon Adventures! Yes. Pokemon Adventures has some major anime references. In fact some of you may not know that the Pokemon Adventures creator, Kusaka, actually has a lot of respect for the Pokemon anime.
  • Mewtwo - When Mewtwo originally first-appeared, it appeared more similar to it's Pokemon Origins counterpart, a wild Pokemon gone berserk. Overtime, it became more similar to it's anime counterpart gaining the power of telepathy and wanted to put a stop to one of his creators daring plans, Team Rocket.
  • Deoxys - Adventures take on Deoxys is certainly far more interesting than any other take I have ever seen however it does borrow one power from the anime and that it can make hollowed clones.
  • Team Rocket's airship in Pokemon Adventures FRLG which made some anime fans think, "Wait!? Team Rocket of the anime has an airship!?" and what surprises them even more is that this airship appears in plain-sight in the Pokemon special, "Mewtwo Returns" which many of them claim to seen. The thing is I've also had this same reaction too as this was literally hiding in plain-sight in the Pokemon Adventures manga. This reference alone made me re-watch the Mewtwo Returns special to see if this was the very same airship that Giovanni rode in Pokemon Adventures.
  • In the Emerald Chapter, Latias can change human form which looks remarkably like her human form from the Pokemon Heroes movie. This is in my opinion one of the more fun references to the anime as it portrays Latias's human form wearing different fashions of clothing throughout the story and the author's little art-sections/gags from an explorer outfit, to a professional reporter outfit, to a nurse outfit, to a scientist outfit, to a coach outfit, to a casino dealer outfit, to a queen outfit.
  • A more obvious nod to a famous scene in Pokemon the First Movie, is Mewtwo's armor. The armor is called, "M2 Bind" and in the manga, it's purpose is to control Mewtwo's destructive powers much like in the movie actually. The big difference is this armor actually succeeds in controlling Mewtwo and it takes the combined efforts of the original Pokemon trainer protagonists to free Mewtwo from it.
  • MAJOR STORY SPOILERS but for those who've seen Pokemon Jirachi Wishmaker, you may have notice an interesting counterpart to False Groudon and that is False Kyogre from the Pokemon Adventures Emerald Arc. Much like in the movie, False Kyogre is created by Jirachi which is similarly what happens in the movie only it's False Groudon. The main difference is that False Kyogre isn't a lovecraftian-like monster that absorbs people with giant energy-tentacles but is a lovecraftian-like monster lol that is made of the giant sea itself giving it a more ghostly but intimidating giant appearance and instead of absorbing people, it tries to drown people much like a tidal wave which in-turn causes the Emerald Arc's setting, the Hoenn Battle Frontier to look like Atlantis as it's towering roof-tops are covered in water. A major difference is how the main characters beat False Kyogre and it's quite amazing. In the movie, False Groudon is so powerful that Ash and Butler's abilities as a trainer alone can't stop it and therefore has to reverse it through the power of Jirachi. In the manga however, things go down much differently. Jirachi has limitations according to the Pokedex and that is Jirachi can only grant three wishes based on the number of unused wish-tags it has, the blue tags on it's head. They can't use anymore wishes and the team of experienced and even legendary Pokemon trainers are forced to fight it using all their accumulated experience they've gained from there journeys utilizing the most powerful elemental moves of Gen 3, Hydro Cannon, Blast Burn, Frenzy Plant and Volt Tackle to finish off False Kyogre.

That wasn't some simple reference. That was an easter egg... AND AN AMAZING ONE EASTER EGG IT IS! I freaking love it when game devs sneak easter eggs like that. Another easter egg to the Pokemon anime is when you talk to Steven Stone in the ORAS remakes during the Delta Episode. If you talk to him, he explains that he met an exceptionally strong trainer with a black charizard that helped him fought Mega Rayquaza at one time . I wonder who that trainer could be lol?...

though IIRC you needed the event shiny beldum (or metang/metagross if you evolved it, which you most likely did by that point of the game) in your party for that line to come up

You do. I believe it happens in the Mossdeep Center once you get it.

Thanks. Very good eye. I've been on these place four times (I have all Gen 7 3DS games) and never noticed that one.

The Pokémon Anime and Pokémon Adventures certainly has a strange relationship with one another. You may notice that in Pokémon Adventures, N has Zekrom as his dragon whereas in the anime, N has Reshiram instead. Same thing with the False Kyogre. It cannot be a coincidence that Adventures utilizes the opposite Legendary monstrosity created by Jirachi in opposition to the more famous one in the Jirachi Wishmaker film.

Now this reference is a bit more unclear, but Red's Espeon seems to be rather a random choice for a Kanto trainer. Even if Eevee were to take a fourth choice, it had two choices available in Gen II. But it seems that either the games/Adventures or the anime decided to play opposites when you realize that Red's Espeon perfectly parallels with Gary's Umbreon. We all know that Ash is anime Red and that Gary is anime Blue (Green). So if Ash were to have an Eevee in opposition to Gary's, what would be the logical Eeveeloution for Ash's Eevee? Why none other than Espeon, of course! Of course, we never saw Blue have an Eevee that evolved into Umbreon. Nor will Ash get an Eevee any time soon.

Speaking of Red though. The Pokémon that replaced Espeon in HGSS is Lapras. And thus, Red's team follows as this:

025MS.png
003MS.png
006MS.png
009MS.png
131MS.png
143MS.png

Devolve Venusaur and Blastoise to Bulbasaur and Squritle respectively (and for the case of the photo, replace Snorlax with Tauros since Ash's Snorlax couldn't be used for the final battle against Drake; but do note that Snorlax was part of the team for the majority of the time) and you get:

tumblr_inline_o4pt598cA21rb8g7l_500.jpg

Ash's Team from the Orange Islands arc.

And if that's not enough, Red's Pikachu in HGSS knows Volt Tackle, Iron Tail, Quick Attack and Thunderbolt. The very same moveset that Ash's Pikachu used for the Diamond and Pearl anime, which airing at the time when HeartGold and SoulSilver was released.

Honestly I think they just went with Zekrom for N because it makes a lot of sense that N represents ideals since his beliefs conflict with the truth like in the games. As for Espeon, I think it's only because that Red just happens to have an Eevee and it evolved into Espeon. As for Red's team in the games. What you said makes sense. I bet the thought process was that they've notice that Red's team is similar to Ash's so they switched out Espeon for the much more popular Lapras. In fact the most common reason behind Red's team at the time, the original reason including Espeon is that it's suppose to represent all the Pokemon Red has obtained in Pokemon Yellow not through catching but obtaining it as gift Pokemon or interacting with them.

In Pokemon Yellow, you could literally obtain all those Pokemon without battling random wild Pokemon. Red's Espeon is a far more interesting reason as many people think that Espeon is supposed to symbolize the crossing of Gen 1 to Gen 2. In fact this can be seen reflected in the Pokemon Adventures manga where the original three protagonists each carry a new Gen 2 Pokemon. Red gets Espeon, Green (Rival) gets Scizor and Blue (Female) gets Granbull. Now the reason why it's Espeon in the games originally is honestly kind of obvious even though it isn't proven. Umbreon is a Dark-Type and for those who don't know this, in Japan, Dark-Type means Evil-Type and from GameFreak's mindset, it wouldn't make sense for Red and his Bulbasaur originally during marketing, who symbolized friendship and tranquility, to have an evil-type Pokemon which is why they went with Espeon.

Although what I do find interesting is that Red's Pikachu's moveset is pretty much Ash's Pikachu's moveset. I wonder if that counts as an easter egg?

From the very beginning of Best Wishes, long before we get to know which dragon would pair up with N in the Adventures manga, Ash was immediately associated with Zekrom. And thus, any savvy Pokémon fan would know that the opposite dragon, Reshiram, had to be with N in the anime; of course that was before the whole earthquake put the kibosh on classic Team Plasma plot.

As for Red's team, while that has been the mundane explanation to avoid premature assumptions on Red's team reference (before 2009, Bulbapedia hastily assumed that Red's Gold/Silver team was based on his Adventures' counterpart's team because of Espeon; it wasn't until Lapras was included in the remake that sunk the notion), remember that GameFreak wasn't shy of making anime references even back in Gen I. Let's face it, the only reason why Red has an unevolved Pikachu is thanks to Ash's Pikachu. Why else is Pikachu at Level 81 and 88 in the Johto Games, the highest leveled Pokémon ever owned by Red?

And I do consider Red's Pikachu's moveset to be an easter egg because there are better moves for Pikachu to have other than Quick Attack. Like Brick Break. And Red's Pikachu in the other games (G/S/C; B2W2, and Gen VII) doesn't have a moveset that matches Ash's Pikachu's. All except HeartGold and SoulSilver. It's a perfect match. Add Red's Pikachu Light Ball into the equation, and you got yourself a Pika Brusier from Ash's DP Team.

I'd say the reason why Red has a Pikachu because of the anime dates back longer than Gold and Silver. In fact, you could say Pokemon Yellow is just one giant Pokemon anime reference.

Yellow was a giant reference, yes. But remember that not alot of fans thought of it as canon. It wasn't until Gold and Silver that references to the anime became a permanent addition to various details whether the fans like it or not. Starting with Red's Pikachu being his highest level Pokémon in every single team he's had. Not even the Kanto Starters had that claim to fame.

Actually much of that were theories as to why Red's team was like that. I think it took Let's Go's re-introduction of James, Jessie and Meowth to say that Yellow was canon.

The Anime/Special's canon know it all.
Hey there is something interesting about Satoshi and his pikchu in both the Pokemon electric tail of pikachu manga (although it was more like a joke) and Shudõ-san's novel that Satoshi was or did try give his own pikachu a nickname @shoz999......it is was Pika !

Detective Pikachu makes a references to the Pokemon anime by talking to another certain Pikachu who mentions a certain trainer who wants to be the very best like no one ever was! In fact, Detective Pikachu might actually be set in the anime-verse.

Well there is jigglypuff had green mic in it's hand
Do you remember that Pokemon association in the Pokemon special manga? Well there is Pokemon national Association in the shudõ's novel.

We are so back Zygardebros
There’s 4 instances where there’s a female trainer named Ikue: a Picnicker in the Japanese Johto games, a Breeder in Japanese versions of XY, another Breeder in all regions of SM/USUM, & a Master Trainer in LGPE. The one trait shared trait besides their name is they all have a Pikachu. This is because Ikue is the name of Pikachu’s voice actress
