Regarding Japanese Versions of the Games, and an unrelated question

So I have LG, Ruby and Sapphire. I'd really like to get Emerald as soon as I can afford it. However, I'm also an intermediate Japanese student at University, and I'm thinking perhaps if I get Emerald, I could get the Japanese version thereof so a) I can work on honing my Japanese skills a bit more, and b) Just so I can say I have it. :p

However, I've got a few questions. I know a lot of the consoles released nowadays are coded to only play games from a certain region. Will I run into this trouble with my GBDS? Is it worth ordering it and it possibly being a hack, do you think?

Unrelated question:
Also, I haven't had access to my advance (it's at my folks' house about fifty miles away right now) so I haven't been able to trade from Sapphire -> LG. Is it possible to trade between a GBDS and a GBA using a link cable?

Thanks a lot for the help!

GBA games are region free, so no probs on the gba, or the ds. And at the moment there is no way to trade from ds-gba. Im pretty sure you cant trade from ds to ds as well

you can trade ds-ds if there ds games but if its gba game on ds-ds it wont work.

Only games that involve a television (i.e gamecube and playstation games) have differences in region. A japanese emerald version will work in an american GBA since it's the same system through-out, just different languages

and it's the NINTENDO DS, and is NOT a gameboy, so please refer to it as either

a) the NDS

B) the DS

(sorry it just really irks me to see people call it a gameboy.)

Do not pass Go.
Well actually, DS is in the line of Nintendo's handheld consoles, which are referred to as the Gameboy series, so tbh the DS is a gameboy.

GBA games region free? I thought that sometimes when games of different regions link up the data can get messed up =\

um, nowhere on the box, or in any article i read, does it state gbds, always dual screen or ds. Al previous gameboys have been called gameboy , gb color, gba , gba sp.

And secondly, ive seen no proof of different regional problems while linking or otherwise

NO, it's a THIRD PILLAR, it's in neither the gameboy or the home console line, it's in it's own line. go do research you must to understand.

no it wont mess up, but it'll be stuck with a japanese name in the US game, and US pokemon names have more slots thus only the first 4/5 letters will stay of the name IIRC.

i found this too, but if you trade back to an english game the name seems to come back

True that it does not refer to itself as a gameboy but saying it is a gameboy ds does not make you incorrect, it's just a term that has become a household word referring to nintendo's handheld consoles. It also holds a hybridization of gameboy advance technology so don't trip if someone calls it a gameboy. People call adjustable wrenches crescent wrenches all the time when crescent is actually a manufacturer name that became an infamous "household name".
And as for the names, the japanese version only have a few letter spaces due to the fact that they don't need as many spaces to fully say a pokemon's name or just about any words at that. I've never dealt with tryin to trade an american pokemon traded to a japanese version back to an american one so I couldn't tell you for sure. I just say choose a short nickname and leave it at that.

How the hell is it household if it's wrong? Anyway, yeah, it would be worth buying the Japanese game, hacks have lessened since it is harder to make a green cart like Emeralds, and everyone knows it's green. Wish I understood more japanese, but noo, mandatory spanish.....

the very definition of a "household name" is that it is an improper naming of something that everyone uses anyways:
crescent wrench like i said.... i don't even think the crescent tool company is around anymore.

On Topic: If you buy a japanese cartridge... only buy from a reputable source because you will sometimes come across cartridges that are close to the right color but are fakes.
