Reggie Hints At Nintendo Wii HD?

Reggie Hints At Nintendo Wii HD?
by John Finnegan
Wii HD not dead?

Speaking about the Wii launch recently, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said one heck of a cryptic quote.

"Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That's because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday," Fils-Aime explained.

Game Informer was wise enough to pick up on the key phrase in that sentence: "at the start." Since the Big N has already announced DVD playback for next year, does this mean HD is also in the cards?

From GI:

We contacted a Nintendo rep to clarify, and while they said that Nintendo is absolutely not currently announcing any plans to upgrade the maximum resolution from 480p, it shouldn't be impossible in theory. The rep noted that Microsoft was able to patch the Xbox 360 to support 1080p. After all, continued the rep, Nintendo has already released a patch to allow Wii gamers to transfer game saves to SD cards.

Very interesting, indeed.

Man, this is pretty interesting...:p I like the sound of this a lot.

Discuss intelligently if you wish...but if you call this "old", you're obviously not aware of the date of the article. ;)

I'm sure it has P.Scan, which is like HD. It has composite cables aswell.

So... if Wii converts to HD tv use. Then I HAVE to get an HD tv. Geez... with these systems pretty high already how are the "non-gamers" going to buy the Wii and a HD tv?

I doubt it's going to happen.

It's black magic!
Well, I knew it was going to happen. For all we know it is just a regular DVD-playback Wii with the Composite Cables included and automatically set up for the HDTV.

Component cables are the standard cables, the yellow, red and white ones. Composite cables are ones capable of 480p, and I'm pretty sure they're blue, green and red.

I seriously doubt the Wii could output detailed games at 1080p. High resolutions require much more processing power, and if you don't have that the game lags, and that's probably one of the worst things that can happen to a game. Remember, the Wii's technology goes in the other direction to PS3 and 360, for example it uses a hell of a lot less power.

I bet you can...

I think the HD version will cost about $270 while the normal Wii gets a price cut to $200.

You got it reversed genius.
Um, no he didn't...

And it'd be quite difficult to make a hardware update over WiiConnect24, imo. Still, it's possible. I reckon, come the Wii's 3rd anniversary, they'll release WiiHD (LOL!! Sounds like "Weed", as in "I weed! I urinated" Ah, I'm so mature) along with Zelda: TP-HD and all new games will come with the option to be played in either. OR, all the software already has the output mechanisms installed or can be installed via a software update through WiiConnect24.

um, and stuff
I'm kind of hoping it does not go HD leave that for next-gen. But yeahin Canada right now it's 280$ so if there was an HD bundle it would be 299.99

I have to agree with Pocchama on this one. I do not want it to go HD. If it does, the console will go up in price (which will not really matter if you already have one), but it also means that the games will cost more as they will be on HD-DVD's.

It would be cool, but it is just not nessasary.

THERE'S NO $50 HERE!
Um, no he didn't...

Let's review what he said since you have the reading comprehension of a fruit fly.

This statement has it all backwards. Quoted for emphasis.

Obviously you're just A/V ignorant.

Component Video isn't found on every SDTV (yes it DOES say they are Component Video cables), and Nintendo would be foolish to make these the standard.

Composite video cables are HIGHLY incapable of supporting anything higher than 480i.

Next time you want to back up his f--k ups, BRING SOME PROOF TO THE TABLE instead of just saying "Um, no he didn't..." like a child, without anything to back up his statement. Seriously not only did you encourage ignorance you could make Nintendo supporters look really stupid when it comes to technology.

Do your homework next time kid before arguing these things with me.

"I'm gonna go get WiiHD!"
"How many times have I told you not to do drugs?"

I'd assume the software already has the output mechanisms, because Reggie was hinting at it already. They prolly aren't planning the better Wii right now, because they're worried about meeting demand first. Therefore, Reggie wouldn't be hinting that if the Wii already had the capabilities, and all they needed to design was a couple of programs to maximize those.
