Ash and Misty need to buy gifts for each other, as their ninth anniversary is quickly approaching. They both go to the Goldenrod Department Store and take two different departments, agreeing to meet back at the entrance when they both have a gift for each other. Wandering the men’s clothing section, Misty’s eye catches something in the women’s department. A local modeling company is holding auditions. Out of curiosity, Misty strolls over to look at what the agency has to offer. The representative at the tryout booth, Ralph Akamatsu, comments Misty on her appearance and claims that she would make a fine model. Misty thanks him, but turns down the offer. But Ash spots her at the booth from another department and thinks that she has taken an interest in modeling. Once Misty has gone, Ash goes to the booth and fills out an audition card for her as an anniversary gift. Several days later, Misty receives an e-mail telling her that her audition appointment has been scheduled at the Akamatsu Modeling Agency. Misty is surprised when Ash tells her what he did for her, but seeing that he did it to show how much he loved her, Misty agrees to go and at least perform the audition. At the agency, she is assigned a swimwear shoot, and the photographer is impressed at how well she poses. Akamatsu himself comes to the audition and is so impressed with Misty that he offers to give her a modeling job. Having taken a liking to the profession, she agrees. Ash is pleased that his gift made Misty happy after all, but after several weeks of modeling for magazines and product packages, Misty realizes that the industry isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She’s forced to keep poses for minutes at a time, wake up earlier, and eat less. She contemplates resigning, but she knows how happy Ash is to be engaged to a fashion model. But Ash assures her that he loves her regardless of what her job is, and Misty quits the modeling business.

Not believing it, James, Jessie, and Meowth drive back to Viridian City to sort things out with Giovanni. As it turns out, Giovanni had lost James’ file when listing all the Japanese agents to be attending. He gives it to James and apologizes, but as James surveys the file, he notices that the space for “Parents” is blank. Wondering why his wealthy parents aren’t mentioned on his file, James sets off to the massive mansion where they live. They are pleased to see James again, and invite him, Jessie, and Meowth to stay a while. Though they manage to recall everything about James’ childhood, he finally shows them the file and asks what’s going on. After some skating around the issue, James’ parents admit the truth – he’s adopted. Shocked that his parents kept the secret from him for 34 years, James storms out in anger. On the way back to Viridian, Jessie and Meowth try to console James, but he is too depressed. Once back at base, he shocks both of them by announcing his retirement from the Team Rocket organization. Jessie, Meowth, and Giovanni beg him not to leave, but he claims that he has no further initiative to work there. After retiring, James sets out to find his biological parents, but has no luck. After a week, Jessie tracks her husband down and convinces him that he does belong in Team Rocket – after all, nearly all its agents join to suppress some childhood trauma. James agrees and willingly returns.

“Press Select for One Player”
Episode 5ACP02
Original Airdate: 10/5/07
Guest Voice: Satoshi Tajiri as himself

Ash purchases a new Gamecube video game system for the apartment, replacing the out-of-date model he formerly had. After hooking it up, he finds that none of the old games he owns work on it, so he and Misty head to an electronics store to restock. Ash buys several new games for his 512-bit console, basing his purchases on the recent game reviews. However, when he gets home and tries them, he is disgusted to see how truly lame they really are. He voices his concern to the Nintendo company, who admire Ash’s opinions and ask him to come down to their headquarters to be a beta tester for their next wave of games. Ash readily takes the job, having always been a gaming fan. Misty, Pikachu, and Togetic come along with him, where they see the game-making process in action. Wandering away, Pikachu and Togetic are shocked to find the multitude of “Pokémon” games. Pikachu dislikes that the Pokémon species are being exploited for video games and merchandising and registers a complaint with the head of the company. The game’s creator, Satoshi Tajiri, explains that he can’t discontinue the games due to their popularity. Meanwhile, Ash points out to the development team just what they’re doing wrong in their games – there isn’t enough action, the missions are too simple, and the characters are too boring. With Ash’s suggestions, Nintendo completely redesigns its upcoming games. Ash and Misty are given free copies of each new game upon their completion, and in several weeks they are also released to the public. But the backlash is horrendous. Ash’s suggestions have made the games insanely violent and far too difficult. Nintendo’s customer service line is swamped with complaints of inability to beat the games and the violence warping kids’ minds. Nintendo yanks the new games from the shelves. Ash deduces that he got carried away in his testing, creating games pandered only to his tastes. He and Misty put it behind them and instead watch TV – where Pikachu is outraged to see that the “Pokémon” TV show has launched its 21st season.

May accidentally locks herself out of her apartment. After calling for help by cellphone, she goes to Ash and Misty’s apartment to pass the time. While there, she sees how romantic Ash and Misty are towards one another and begins to develop jealousy. She still does not have a boyfriend of her own, and decides to remedy the problem by visiting the Goldenrod single’s bar that night. Unfortunately, she has no luck, as all the men she meets are jerks with sex on their minds and nothing else. Depressed, May returns to the apartment, where she runs into Gary. She tells him what’s troubling her, and Gary understands – he hasn’t been able to find a decent girlfriend in the recent months. Realizing that they both have the same trouble, May asks Gary if he’d like to go out with her that weekend. Gary agrees. Upstairs, May enthusiastically tells Ash and Misty that she has finally found a boyfriend. On their first date, May and Gary have dinner at the finest restaurant in Goldenrod, but May fears that Gary isn’t as interested in her as she hoped he was. Back in her apartment after dinner, May realizes that she isn’t as good-looking as she could be. Asking Misty for help, she learns of Suzie, the Pokémon groomer of Scissor Street who also specializes in hair and makeup for people as well. To ensure that she looks appealing enough to Gary, May makes a cross-region trip to Kanto, where Suzie gives her a total makeover. Looking absolutely stunning, May returns home and asks Gary on another date. But Gary notices how different May looks and asks what she’s done. May explains that she wanted to make the absolute best impression possible, but Gary assures her that he likes her regardless of how pretty she is. Relieved, May removes her makeup and continues her relationship with Gary.

Original Airdate: 10/26/07
Guest Voice: Pamela Reed as Misdreavus, Donal Logue as Gengar

Al sends Ash on another business trip to pick up new bike parts. This time, he must travel to the sleazy Lavender Town. Not trusting the town’s residents, he brings Misty, Pikachu, and Togetic along with him. Once in the city, Ash picks up the parts he needs from the Lavender bike shop, but once he gets back outside he is shocked to see that his car has been stolen. With no mode of transportation, Ash and the others must stay at a hotel for the night. The only place they find is in a very inopportune location – right next to the Pokémon Spirit House. Trying to get a room for the night, Ash runs into Morty, the leader of the Ecruteak City Gym, who is in town on a research trip. Fascinated by the workings of the undead, Morty has been investigating the Spirit House. To assist him in his search for spirits, Ash lends Morty his Gengar for the night. In the hotel room several hours later, Ash cannot sleep knowing that a reliable member of his Pokémon team is in the hands of someone he’s only met once before. Careful not to wake up Misty, he sneaks out of the hotel and into the Spirit House next door. Pikachu follows him out of curiosity. Ash tells Pikachu to get back to the hotel, but the door has been somehow sealed shut. Both of them set out through the house to find Morty. Searching the first floor, Pikachu suddenly falls through the floorboards, landing in the basement. Ash has no choice but to recall him into a Poké Ball. Pikachu flat-out refuses to go into the ball, but Ash sucks him up anyway. Finally, Ash locates Morty attempting to contact the spirits of the house. Ash asks for Gengar back, but Morty says he cannot disrupt the spirit-reaching process. Ash insists that ghosts do not exist, but at that moment, the room goes dark and chilly. Morty claims that Ash has angered the spirits of the house and that they are about to attack, but then Pikachu explodes out of the Poké Ball and blasts a Thunderbolt through the room, driving the supposed spirit away. The next day, Morty is depressed to learn that the boiler in the basement had broken and was causing the commotion, coincidentally breaking down completely upon Pikachu’s attack. Ash reclaims his Gengar and, still with no car, he and Misty catch a bus back to Goldenrod, where Ash is now forced to walk to work each day.

“It’s Not Easy Bein’ Blue and Green”
Episode 5ACP03
Original Airdate: 11/9/07
Guest Voice: Stephen Colbert as Armond Mitsumune, Juliette Lewis as Jennifer

Watching the evening news, Ash and Misty are horrified to see that the Viridian Forest is going to be leveled in the coming weeks to make room for a new highway strip. Though Ash sees it as depressing, he shrugs it off, as there is nothing he can do about it. But Misty reminds Ash of everything that happened to him in that forest – it is, after all, where he caught his first wild Pokémon 18 years ago. Ash sees her point and decides to put a stop to the construction. Misty learns of environmentalist group JEET: Japan for Ethical Earth Treatment and signs up herself and Ash. The leader of the group, radical Jennifer Narusegawa, has organized a sit-in at Viridian Forest to prevent its destruction. Ash and Misty, along with the other fifty or so members of the group, travel to the forest and shackle themselves to the multitude of trees. Ash sees little point in this, claiming that he would have just sent in a petition or something, but Misty encourages him to stay resolved. Sure enough, the group’s protest succeeds and the construction is cancelled. Misty enjoys the thrill of saving the planet and decides to remain a JEET member, though Ash is frazzled by the experience and immediately quits. Attending weekly meetings, Misty soon discovers that the sit-in at Viridian Forest was insanely tame compared to the usual acts of the group. As the Petalburg Convention Center will soon be hosting the annual Hoenn Fashion Show, Jennifer plans to have the group’s members burst onto the stage during the show with signs protesting the animal fur clothes the models will be wearing. Misty claims that they don’t have to go that far, but Jennifer dismisses this suggestion. On the day of the show, Misty ducks out moments before the planned raid, and Jennifer calls her a traitor. Returning to Goldenrod, Misty tells Ash that he was right about not having to be so radical about the planet’s protection. The point is driven home when Misty learns that everyone in JEET was arrested.

Original Airdate: 11/16/07

Tracey invites Ash and Misty to an art gallery opening on Cinnabar Island. While they are there, they run into several former acquaintances of Tracey’s from the Orange archipelago. Everyone there recognizes Ash as the one who beat the Hoenn League in 2005, and Misty as the ex-Cerulean City gym leader, but even Tracey’s friends only remember him as “that kid who drew Pokémon” or “that gay guy Ash hangs out with”. Tired of constantly being outshined by his friends’ achievements, Tracey wants to do something that everyone will remember him by and decides to become a gym leader. Ash does not think that Tracey has the skill to become a gym leader, but Tracey points out that he won’t need skill – he plans to open his gym in Pallet Town for just-starting trainers to try their new Pokémon in, and can use his new and less used teammates. Meanwhile, Misty has become infatuated with an art piece she saw at the gallery opening. Feeling it would be perfect for the apartment, she looks up the piece online and is shocked at its 6,000,000-yen price tag. Desperate for it, she secretly withdraws some extra money from her and Ash’s bank account and purchases it. After getting the funding from Professor Oak, Tracey constructs and opens his gym in the heart of Pallet Town. He makes virtually no money in his first few weeks, as he lets the young and inexperienced trainers that challenge him win intentionally. Before long, he realizes that he’ll need more capital to stay in business and begins calling his Scizor, Azumarill, and Venomoth into battles. But he ends up crushing the spirit of all the trainers who face him, and interest in becoming a Pokémon trainer in Pallet Town plummets. When the Pokémon League discovers that Tracey does not have a gym leader’s license, they shut his gym down. Back in Goldenrod, Ash is perplexed by the new painting in the apartment, and a guilt-consumed Misty ultimately returns it and gets Ash’s money back.

Ultimately, Aqua and Magma become the strongest organized crime group in all of China. Several weeks later, Giovanni is approached by the Aqua and Magma bosses, Harlan and Isabel, who ask Giovanni to merge Team Rocket with their two rings to become the greatest crime ring in Asia. Tracking down Jessie and James, Giovanni’s best agents, they offer them jobs at Team Aqua and Team Magma. Jessie and James are unsure whether or not they should leave Japan, but Harlan and Isabel tell them that Giovanni is planning to fire them soon. Swallowing the believable fabrication, Jessie, James, and Meowth march back to headquarters, tell off Giovanni, and officially resign. They set off to China, where they meet with Harlan and Isabel separately to discuss their new jobs. But there’s a catch – Jessie is offered the Aqua job, while James would take the position at Magma, and Meowth would not be included at all. A week into their new jobs, both Jessie and James realize that they’ve made a huge mistake. Reuniting with Meowth, they return to Japan and offer their deepest apologies to Giovanni, who rehires them back onto Team Rocket B Class.

Developing a strong dislike of walking to work each day after having his car stolen in Lavender Town, Ash decides to go out and buy a new car. He takes Misty, Pikachu, and Togetic with him to decide what model they would all like. After some searching, Ash comes across the 2015 Mitsubishi Tochukaso, a sleek SUV with a “HUMMI” power engine and DVD player. Shelling out the massive sticker price, Ash is able to drive home in it that day, to the delight of Misty and the Pokémon. Ash soon becomes the envy of Al and all the guys at Kevin’s Bar and Grille with his new vehicle. To show it off in the other towns, Ash takes Misty out for a drive one weekend afternoon. Driving towards New Bark Town, Ash takes a detour over the Tohjo Bridge to see how the SUV handles offroad. Driving along the rocky terrain of Mt. Silver, Ash rams head-on into a boulder and the car spins out, rolling down the rock and stopping millimeters from a chasm. Ash can’t open the doors on his side, and the other side drops off into the canyon. Ash and Misty are trapped. Back at home, Pikachu wonders what could have happened to Ash and Misty to keep them so late. When he spots them on the evening news in a breaking story, he asks Togetic to fly him to their aid. Togetic, self-centered as she is, wonders why she should risk her life for people she doesn’t even like very much. Outraged at how apathetic Togetic is, Pikachu belts her with a Thunderbolt attack. Being a Flying Pokémon, Togetic is knocked out. Realizing that he just lost his only mode of transportation, Pikachu runs down to the street and catches a bus to the Goldenrod TV Station. Explaining that his trainer is stuck in the car at Mt. Silver, the news crew takes Pikachu in their helicopter and flies him to the scene. They lower him to the car by cable, and Ash opens a window to grab onto Pikachu. But Pikachu can barely hold on. Ash is in danger of falling into the chasm – but Togetic has come to and arrives on the scene to help successfully hoist Ash and Misty to safety. Back at home, Ash collects the insurance on his car in order to pay for its repairs, and Misty congratulates Togetic for her bravery, despite Togetic’s assurance that “this was a one-time gig”.

Unfortunately, Al has hired several college interns over the Christmas vacation and is unable to pay Ash the Christmas bonus he promised him. With no real present money, Ash searches desperately for another part-time job in the days before Christmas. He is left to play Santa Claus at a collection bucket outside the Goldenrod Department Store, but he barely makes any money. With no gifts for anyone, Ash returns home on Christmas Eve extremely irate. To make his holidays even worse, Ash receives terrible news from the United States – his father, whom he met only once before, just died while on the job. Positively fuming, Ash takes out his holiday stress by yelling at Misty and Pikachu, who give him the cold shoulder afterwards. Going to bed that night, Ash says out loud that he wishes he’d never been born. That night, Ash awakens to an incredible vision – the spirit of Mr. Ketchum standing at the foot of his bed. Mr. Ketchum takes Ash by the hand and shows him what things would be like if he did not exist. In the alternate version of Japan Ash sees, crime runs rampant as Team Rocket has overtaken many major corporations. In Pallet Town, Ash sees that if he weren’t around, Delia would have nobody to comfort and care for her, as Ash encouraged Mimey to take his job there. Professor Oak, old and weary, has nobody to assist his research since he has never met Tracey. Misty is still suffering under the iron thumb of her older sisters. Brock has never left the Pewter Gym and has no initiative to be a Pokémon Breeder. Gary, with his punked-out Pikachu as a starting Pokémon, has gone on to win the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn Leagues. May and Max have failed as Pokémon trainers because they had nobody to guide them. And Jessie and James have become the nastiest Team Rocket agents to ever disgrace Japan. Realizing just how much impact he’s made in his life, Ash begs his father to return him to the real world. When he awakens on Christmas, Ash apologizes to Misty and Pikachu for yelling and assures them that as long as they have each other, they can still enjoy the holidays.

“Faster, Butterfree! Kill! Kill!”
Episode 5ACP09
Original Airdate: 1/11/08

On a particularly sunny day, Ash takes Misty for a romantic lunch outdoors at Relaxation Square National Park. While Pikachu and Togetic run rampant, Ash and Misty are pestered by the multitude of bugs swarming the area. Trying to shoo them away, Ash stops. One bug, a Butterfree, is wearing a yellow scarf. Recognizing it as the Butterfree he owned for the first month of his Indigo League training, Ash is overjoyed to see it. He asks him to return to his team, but Butterfree is uncertain. He is a husband and a father at this point and will only come back if Ash agrees to take in his wife and twelve baby Caterpie. Ash agrees. Butterfree is surprised to see just how well Ash has made out in the past seventeen years without him on his team, living in an apartment and engaged to Misty. Nonetheless, Butterfree’s family settles into the apartment fairly quickly, but before long they prove to be a bit of a hindrance. It isn’t easy for Ash to help Butterfree keep track of all of his kids, and Pikachu and Togetic dislike sharing living quarters with two butterflies and twelve caterpillars. And of course, Misty is still terrified out of her wits when it comes to insects. When Butterfree overhears Misty telling Ash to get rid of the bug family, he is infuriated. Thinking that he isn’t welcome in the home, Butterfree suddenly turns very testy against Ash and Misty. Eventually, he flies off the handle, blasts Ash and Misty with Stun Spores, takes his family, and bolts from the apartment. Though Togetic is impressed with this act of rebelliousness, Ash sets out to relocate his Butterfree. He finds Butterfree’s wife and kids lost down a dark Goldenrod alley and asks them what’s happened. Mrs. Butterfree recalls that Butterfree said something about finding a new trainer who respects him. Ash deduces that Butterfree has gone back to Relaxation Square to allow himself to be caught in the Bug-Catching Contest. Catching up to Butterfree at the park, Ash convinces him that he is cared for at the apartment by personally fighting off another trainer who wants Butterfree for himself. Impressed that Ash would want to protect him, Butterfree returns to Ash’s team, as well as his family.

“Blackface Killer”
Episode 5ACP11
Original Airdate: 1/18/08
Guest Voices: Wanda Sykes as Jynx, Loni Love as Carole B. Weatherford

Ash receives a call from the head of the Violet City Pokémon Institute, asking him if he would give a lecture to the first grade students next week, since he has spoken there before and has many great training tips to share. Ash agrees, and brings Misty, Pikachu, and Togetic along with him. At the institute, Ash asks the class if they know how many species of Pokémon there are. When one kid answers 385, Ash tells him that he is wrong, but all the other students seem to agree with him. Confused, Ash consults his PokéDex, which also states that there are only 385 Pokémon instead of 386. Ash searches through the numerical listing and finds that there is no data listed for Jynx. The teacher, Ms. Priscilla, informs Ash that Jynx is no longer recognized as a Pokémon due to its “racially offensive appearance”. Ash finds it ludicrous, and when he gets home, he calls Professor Oak about the subject. Oak tells him that the Japanese government ordered all Pokémon trainers to release their Jynx several years ago. However, he does have one left in the lab that he’s kept for his studies. Determined to return Jynx to the public’s recognition, Ash has Oak send him the Jynx through the Pokémon Center PC. Jynx tells Ash that she once had a trainer, but after one woman wrote a concerned letter to the Pokémon League claiming that she was a racist stereotype, she was shunned and eventually abandoned. Ash assures Jynx that he won’t let that happen to her again and vows to get her recognized as a Pokémon again. He makes calls and sends e-mails to the Pokémon League, claiming that there is nothing wrong with Jynx and that they have been unfairly pegged as stereotypes just because of how they evolved. But he gets no serious responses. Nonetheless, Ash’s resolve stays firm, and he brings Jynx out in public with him to show the world that he doesn’t believe Jynx deserves to be oppressed. Naturally, the appearance of Jynx causes an uproar on the streets, and passersby attempt to beat her for being so offensive. Ash fights back against the mob, but the police intervene and Ash ends up in jail. At his trial, Ash insists once again that there is nothing wrong with Jynx, but he can’t convince the jury. However, when Misty stands up in the audience and explains that there are plenty of other aspects of Pokémon training that may seem offensive but truly aren’t, the judge rules in Ash’s favor. Jynx thanks Ash and sets off alone, hoping to find a trainer someday.

“Don’t Fear the Reefer”
Episode 5ACP10
Original Airdate: 2/1/08
Guest Voice: Kevin Smith as Jay Aoyama

Giovanni assigns Jessie and James a new mission – they will oversee Team Rocket’s new drug selling division. For the mission, they are paired with Jay Aoyama, a tough A Class Rocket who has experience in dealing drugs. Jay informs Jessie and James that they will be handling the sale of marijuana. James and Meowth find the job to be fairly easy, but Jessie has problems when she is assigned the task of adding up the money they’re making – having never had proper schooling, she’s not all that great with math. Eventually, the stress gets to be too much, and Jessie is exhausted. To calm her frazzled nerves, she samples some of the marijuana being sold. With just one drag, she is immediately addicted and totally blows off her calculating tasks. James is shocked to find that Jessie put off her work to get high (on their own merchandise, no less) and tells her to never sample their drug shipments again. Jessie reluctantly agrees, but shortly after she finds herself needing another buzz. She finds a way around James’ request by stealing a bag of marijuana for herself, and with her own private stash she is able to get high whenever she wants. Jessie keeps her smoking sessions confined to the times when she’s not working, but soon her addiction grows stronger. James and Meowth notice that Jessie constantly comes into work disoriented. When James discovers a bag of marijuana leaves in Jessie’s locker, he is left with no choice but to report her to Giovanni, who promptly takes them off the drug dealing assignment. Left with no easy source of marijuana, Jessie continually goes behind James’ back and buys more bags from Jay. Eventually, her addiction gets totally out of hand, as she gets stoned moments before a bank robbery. Totally out of it, Jessie fails miserably. Outraged, Giovanni suspends Jessie for six months without pay in order to give her enough time to break her addiction. After a lengthy rehab session, Jessie returns to Team Rocket, promising James that she will never betray him like that again.

“Dr. Strangebugs (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Bug Pokémon)”
Episode 5ACP12
Original Airdate: 2/8/08

One night, Ash is awakened by a nervous Misty. She tells him that a bug has gotten into the bedroom and she needs him to dispose of it. Ash finds that the bug in question is a nervous Ledyba cowering in the corner. He sends it out the window, but Misty is still wary. She fears that if an insect got in once, more can get in again. In turn, she stays up all night, watching the darkened room for bugs. In the morning, Ash sees how burnt-out Misty is from not getting any sleep. He tells her that her fear of bugs has gotten out of hand and must be cured. Misty does not want her fear conquered, telling Ash that she can live with a fear of bugs. But Ash is determined. He schedules an appointment with Dr. Vanessa Maehara, a psychiatrist who has been hailed as an expert in helping people overcome phobias. Dr. Maehara tells Misty that her fear of bugs is probably inspired by some bad experience that happened to her once before. Misty recalls that once, as an infant, she had been playing outside when she irritated a swarm of Beedrill. Though she narrowly escaped, the experience left her scarred for life. Still, Misty refuses to accept that all insects are not out to hurt her. Ash realizes that the sessions aren’t working and instead goes to a more reliable source – Bugsy, the leader of the Azalea Town Gym and an expert on all Bug Pokémon. Bugsy proposes a more direct way for Misty to overcome her fear. If she spends a night in the bug-infested Ilex Forest, she should realize that bugs are really harmless. Misty refuses, but Ash tells her that if she wants to live a normal life, they should give it a shot. That night, Misty sets up camp in the forest but cannot sleep knowing that there are bugs everywhere. When a Weedle crawls into her tent, she is terrified, but she sees that the Weedle is just as scared of her. Realizing that bugs aren’t as evil as she thought before, Misty overcomes her fear.

“Scornin’ the U.S.A.”
Episode 5ACP13
Original Airdate: 2/15/08
Guest Voice: Danny DeVito as Ralph MacDougal

While Ash is at work, Misty decides to watch a heated Pokémon battle on TV. When Ash gets home, the match is still raging, as the opponents, an Exploud and an Electrode, refuse to back down. Ultimately, the Electrode’s trainer realizes that if he is going to lose, he might as well take his opponent with him, and instructs Electrode to Explode. Electrode does so in a spectacular mushroom cloud, but somehow Exploud stays up. Though Misty, Pikachu, and Togetic are amazed at the outcome of the battle, Ash is suddenly very irate and storms off into the bedroom. When Misty asks Ash why he got so upset, Ash explains that the mushroom explosion reminded him of the nuclear bomb that the United States Army dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. Ever since he first heard the story of the bombing as a boy, he has detested the event. Misty realizes that this is why Ash constantly shows prejudice against America. The next day at work, Al introduces Ash to his new coworker – Ralph McDougal, an American who has recently moved overseas to witness the efficiency of Japan firsthand. Ash finds it hard to control his dislike of Ralph, as he constantly tells of the differences between the American and Japanese cultures. One day, Ralph brings up the topic of the World War II ordeals, and Ash turns it into a heated argument. When Ralph claims that Japan had no right to bomb Pearl Harbor in 1941 and that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified, Ash snaps and punches Ralph in the nose, his years of hatred of all things American finally seething to the surface. Al witnesses the act and promptly fires Ash. Left with no job, Ash realizes that his prejudice against the USA has gone too far. He tries to change his attitude, but cannot find it in himself to overlook the massive slaughter of millions of Japanese citizens, even if it was 70 years ago. Misty tells him that if he cannot abandon his opinion, he’s better off just not voicing it in public. Ash agrees and asks Al to give him his job back, promising not to fly off the handle again. Al allows Ash to return to the bike shop.

Unfortunately, the one he has in mind costs upwards of 6,550,000 yen at the Goldenrod Department Store. Not wanting to disappoint Misty, who has already guessed that Ash plans to get her a necklace, Ash must search all over Goldenrod for a cheaper place to buy jewelry. But nothing comes up. On Misty’s birthday, Ash tells Misty that he will surprise her with her gift that night, then spends all his free time at the bike shop searching the telephone book for discount jewelry stores. He finally finds one in Lavaridge Town, offering the necklace for 90,000 yen, but it is a six-hour drive away from Goldenrod. Desperate, he takes off early from work, claiming to be sick, and heads to Lavaridge at well over the speed limit. He is stopped on the highway and issued a speeding ticket, which costs him valuable time. When he finally gets to Lavaridge, he spends half an hour trying to find the store he needs. Once he gets there, he tries to find his desired necklace, but before he can make his purchase, the store is robbed by a Team Rocket agent. The necklace Ash wanted is stolen, and Ash pursues the agent’s van in an attempt to get his fiancée’s gift back. He makes a daring leap from his brand-new 2015 Mitsubishi Tochukaso to the Rocket van, startling the driver and recovering the necklace. But his unmanned car crashes into a guardrail and tumbles down a hill. With no mode of transportation, Ash must call a friend to pick him up. The only one close enough to reach him in time is Tracey, on a research trip for Professor Oak. Subjected to a five-hour drive with nothing but Tracey’s terrible taste in music to listen to, Ash gets out of the car at the Goldenrod city limits and makes his way back home on foot. Bursting into the apartment at 11:30 PM, Ash presents Misty with her gift, but accidentally drops it. When it breaks, Ash realizes that the necklace wasn’t even real diamond, but Misty doesn’t care. As long as she can spend her birthday with Ash, she is happy.

“You Don’t Mess Around With Gym”

Episode 5ACP18
Original Airdate: 3/28/08

May and Max announce to Ash, Misty, and Gary that their father Norman’s 50th birthday is approaching. The two siblings plan to travel to Petalburg City and give him a surprise party, and Ash, Misty, and Gary agree to come along. When they arrive, they see that Norman’s wife Caroline is alone in the house - Norman has been putting in more and more extra hours at the gym, leaving less and less time for her. May sees that her mother is upset, but tries to raise her spirits for Norman’s party. When Norman arrives home, the party commences, but it is obvious that Caroline is angry at her husband. After dinner, the two of them get into a huge argument that commences with Caroline announcing that she wants a divorce. Norman is shocked, as are May and Max, and the two decide to do all they can to reunite their parents before Caroline can act on her words. But the next day, Caroline throws Norman out of the house. Left with nowhere to live, Norman dejectedly closes his gym and starts drinking on a regular basis. Unable to stand to see his dad like this, Max invites Norman to move into the Goldenrod Arms building. Meanwhile, May tries to talk to Caroline and convince her to take Norman back, but she flatly refuses, explaining that she’s had pent-up aggression towards Norman for years. In Goldenrod, Norman sees how happy Ash and Misty are together and decides that he can’t allow himself to be knocked down so easily. He starts playing the dating scene, looking for someone new. However, every woman he meets finds him too old. Norman gives up, admitting that he still wants Caroline. May and Max are far from giving up, however - they manage to get Norman and Caroline together in the building, then lock them in Ash and Misty’s apartment until they reconcile their differences. Caroline explains to Norman that she doesn’t like him working at the gym so late and ignoring her, but Norman explains that the reason he puts in extra hours is so he can always be able to provide for her. Touched, Caroline forgives Norman and allows him to return home.

“The Computer Wore Hair Dye”
Episode 5ACP16
Original Airdate: 4/11/08

James is trying to figure out how to work the cellphone that Jessie got him for their wedding anniversary. No matter how often he fiddles with it, he can’t get its Internet access feature to work. Later, Giovanni tells Jessie, James and Meowth that they are to infiltrate the Devon Corporation building again, only this time, they are to go undercover as employees to get info on a new OS they are developing. To ensure that they are not found out, they disguise themselves more thoroughly than usual, this time dying their hair in addition to donning business suits. Once inside the building, Jessie and James identify themselves as employees while Meowth sneaks around in secret trying to find the master files for the new OS. James is shocked to see that coworkers keep greeting him as “Ken Takamoto”. Wondering what’s going on, James locates a cubicle that features a photograph of a man who looks exactly like he does in his disguise. Ken has gone on vacation for two weeks, and the other Devon workers think James is Ken having returned early. James sees this as an opportunity to go further undetected as a Rocket. Meanwhile, Jessie and Meowth locate the master files for the new Devon OS and download it to disk. But in the middle of the transfer, the power goes out momentarily, causing the entire OS to be deleted. Knowing that they need something to bring back to Giovanni, Jessie must read the designer’s manual and recreate the entire OS from scratch. Back on the office floor, James (still believed to be Ken) is asked to present a meeting on the Devon Corporation’s new Internet access feature on their newest wave of cellphones. Unfortunately, James still has no idea what on earth he’s doing and totally blows the presentation. When he starts sweating profusely before the board of employees, his hair dye washes off and his cover is blown. He makes a break for it and locates Jessie and Meowth, who have managed to recover the lost OS from backup files. All three of them return to headquarters, where James gives up on trying to access the web via his phone.

“Up In Spoke”
Episode 5ACP19
Original Airdate: 4/25/08
Guest Voice: Josie Lawrence as Meowzy

While on a mission to hijack three shipments of rare jewels from a jewelry store in Goldenrod City, Jessie, James, and Meowth split up in order to take the delivery vans they are after. Lurking in an alleyway behind the store, Meowth detects movement behind a trash can and cocks his shotgun in preparation – only to hide it hastily when he sees the thing that caused the movement. It is none other than Meowzy, the female Meowth that he once was in love with. Meowth denies that he is still a Team Rocket agent, but when the truck arrives he remembers his mission and immediately shoots out the tires. Meowzy is appalled that Meowth is still following the path of “common street trash” and returns to her owner, who has taken cover in the store. Once Meowth catches up with Jessie and James, he tells them what happened. Though James can offer little advice on what to do, Jessie, who understands the female mind, agrees to tell Meowth how to win Meowzy back. Meowth tells Jessie that Meowzy is not interested in him because of his alley cat past and his attempts at human behavior. Jessie suggests that if Meowth wants to impress her, he can’t act like he does now. Confident, Meowth takes a week off from his Team Rocket duties to visit Meowzy at her elegant owner’s home. He walks on all fours and meows, acting more like a real cat, but forgets all that when he sees the Persian that Meowzy left him for eleven years ago and is still going out with. Realizing that he still doesn’t stand a chance if he acts human, Meowth takes drastic measures. He goes to the Move Deleter in Blackthorn City, who brainwashes Meowth into forgetting how to speak or walk. Once again a normal Meowth, he returns to Meowzy more confident than ever – but she still turns him down. Jessie and James soon come to retrieve Meowth, but are shocked when they see what he has done to himself. Desperate to get their old Meowth back, they take him back to the Move Deleter, who reverses the effects of the brainwashing. Afterwards, Meowth accepts the fact that Meowzy will never love him.

Misty notices that Ash is spending more time on the Internet recently. He explains that he’s found a new message board called The Coliseum, where Pokémon trainers (active and retired) can talk about their favorite subjects. Logged on as HoennChamp151, Ash encourages Misty to join too. When she sees how friendly the other board members are she agrees and registers under the name Cerulean_Water_Nymph386. Both enjoy spending time on the board, as Ash recounts his stories of his past training adventures to the newbies and Misty offers advice to other gym leaders on the board. One morning, Ash logs on to the board quickly before heading off to work and leaves the computer on for Misty to use. Misty surfs around the board for a while, and when she tries to type a post she realizes that she is still logged in under Ash’ username. Before logging Ash out, she cannot resist taking a peek in Ash’s profile. But what she finds is deeply shocking. Under Ash’s entries for “Other Favorite Websites” is a list comprised mostly of adult websites. Misty is outraged that Ash is also using the Internet to check out porn sites. When Ash comes home, she does not say anything immediately but hints that something is upsetting her. That night, Misty slips out of bed and logs on to The Coliseum, re-registering under a new username. She anonymously sends Ash dozens of private messages telling him to stay loyal to his fiancée. When Ash finds the messages, he deletes them all, thinking that someone is playing a prank on him. Misty tells him everything and demands to know why he feels the need to look up dirty websites when he already has a girl. Ash insists that he has never looked at any of the sites listed in his profile. Wondering why Ash is lying, Misty finally uncovers the truth – several days ago, Pikachu had logged on under Ash’s username and screwed with Ash’s profile, jokingly putting in the sites. Misty forgives Ash, who bans Pikachu from using the computer anymore.

“International Lampooned Vacation”
Episode 5ACP21
Original Airdate: 5/16/08
Guest Voice: Brian Posehn as Norm

Ash and Misty begin thinking of destinations for their honeymoon after their wedding. Though Ash proposes the Orange Islands, Misty wants to go somewhere outside Japan. She decides on the United States of America. Naturally, Ash is totally against this decision, recalling all the negative things America has done to Japan in the past (most of which Ash makes up on the spot). Despite Misty’s objections, Ash refuses to set foot in the States. Misty insists that America cannot possibly be as bad as Ash claims it is, and to prove it, she books a vacation for them next month. Though Ash is truly disappointed that he is being dragged to the USA, he nonetheless takes two weeks off work for the trip. He, Misty, Pikachu, and Togetic pack their bags and book a flight, and soon Ash finds himself in Los Angeles, California. As soon as they get off the plane, an uproar occurs over the presence of Pikachu and Togetic – American citizens have never seen real Pokémon before. Ash and Misty are forced to keep them in Poké Balls for the whole two weeks. At their hotel, Misty is eager to go sightseeing, but Ash does not want to leave the room. Misty points out that there are plenty of things Ash can do that will remind him of Japan. There are plenty of video games and Japanese movies available for him at any store. Out on the streets of L.A., Ash is initially bored but soon finds himself suddenly captivated by a Japanese anime and manga store. To remind himself of home, Ash peruses the rows and rows of videos, DVDs, video games, and comic books. Meanwhile, Misty explores the famed Hollywood Boulevard, but finds herself vastly behind on American culture when she can’t identify a single name on the Walk of Fame. To accustom herself with the native movies, she hangs out at Mann’s Chinese Theater to catch screenings of all the latest films. Unfortunately, as it is summer, nearly all the movies are sequels, so Misty decides to hit a local DVD store to rent the originals. As Ash and Misty partake in the culture, Pikachu and Togetic are separately going insane from being locked in their Poké Balls for days on end. After five days of their vacation, Misty has bought every American movie she can get, while Ash has bought every Japanese anime DVD he can. At this, they realize that they have completely drained their supply of American currency and have no money left. With one week of vacation remaining, they have no way of paying their hotel bill, let alone getting back to Japan…

To be continued next season.
