I'll be watching the Masters 8 in 3D each week and I'm going to share what its like and review the 3D quality, ranking scenes as Stunning, Great, Lackluster, or Bad 3D and describing what 2D Pokemon scenes look like after they are transformed into 3D.
It is sort of like the image above. Unfortunately this type of image only simulates a 3d effect and pales in comparison to what its actually like to watch this action unfold in 3D.
My first 3D episode review is of Journeys Episode 115, the clash between Alain and Leon.
STUNNING 3D: Top 5 Scenes
1. The stage with the lights and Masters 8 contestants looks sick. It's like looking through a portal into a live concert stage with lights crisscrossing physically in space moving across the stage. When Leon takes the stage standing in a translucent 3D red pillar of light emerges and the way it is surrounded by the other spotlights and champions looks incredible. They all appear clearly separated out in space.
Ash viewed from below the stage looks like you are literally looking up over the edge of physical stage at him because the stage is coming out at you, and the shot of him shown from above waving his arms feels like you are up in the spotlight with him. Super cool.
2. All shots of the stadium! In the birds eye view the metal arch above the stadium protrudes out of the screen and the stadium floor appears far below. The shot of the whole stadium sitting in the town looks like a real mini Galar stadium would if it were situated in a diorama. Feels like you could reach in and grab it.
3. The shot where Ash walks into the stands to sit with Hop and Go. Feels like you are up their with them and their is great depth and distinction to each row and spectator/Pokemon behind them, with the trio popping off the screen
4. Alains Charizard. It really looks like its standing in the stadium ready to face off against Leons Rillaboom. When it flare drives right through Rillaboom's roots, the roots are coming out of the screen with tendrils sweeping in behind the main part of the roots. Charizard is surrounded by a translucent ball of fire with the stadium seats in the back drop as he flies towards the screen bursting through the attack. The shot looks twice as epic in 3D. Chestnaught spinning along the Gigantamax attack looks equally awesome. He comes towards then slightly out of the screen.
5. Leon and Alain walking in. The line diagonal line that divides them into separate views splits them off into their own separate 3d spaces making a really cool effect. Like two separate windows into 3D spaces in the same screen.
GREAT 3D:
1. The Kalos lab. Looks convincingly 3d inside and outside. Really feels like you are in the lab with them, with nice distance between Garchomp the others and then the monitor even though they are all positioned diagonally.
2. Hop holding his Pokemon after the loss. He and his Pokemon are actually projected out of the screen. When the animation of Leon pops up as he mentions his brother, it is cool because it appears in layers. Leon appears in 3D on top of the orange background with Hop sticking out of the screen and the Ash/Go pop up bubbles floating beside him.
3. People standing around in the town as the drones fly overhead look like they are standing in a 3d space/town
4. The whole Iris selfie scene. It looks really cool when she is taking the selfie though because Steven and Lance are out in front and the three girls appear back in the room making the scene feel really realistic, where it just feels flat watching it in 2D and you miss out on that completely.
5. Ash and Iris running through the hallway. It's like a 3d corridor with real depth. When they come through the doors the two of them pop off the screen and the hallway appears like a physical space behind them that could be reached into.
LACKLUSTER 3D:
1. When fireblast collides with the psychic attack, the whole thing looks flat The original image is a bit unclear so the shapes seem to be not very well detected and separated out.
2. When Leon and Alain release their Pokemon. The blue Pokeball beams end up at the same level of depth of the stadium entrance hallway throwing off the effect.
3. The side view of Ash, Go and Hop as the battle begins. Not enough distance between them and it looks too flat
4. Chesnaught punching his opponent. His arm is on the same level as the hair of Leons Rillaboom, so it feels a bit off.
5. The green pin missile barrage attack looks too flat, could look really cool if everything was more spaced out
BAD 3D:
1. Jessy standing in front of the stadium. Her hair was misinterpreted and is displayed at the depth level of the stadium stairs making it look chopped off.
2. From behind the challengers on stage looking out at the stands just before the match ups are displayed on screen. The middle entry ramp of the stadium is misplaced to the same level as Leons hat. Although everything else there looks great, that totally throws off the visuals and is weird to look at.
3. Not actually technically bad, but the selfie camera shots end up having team rocket popping out of their camera, which shouldn't happen unless their camera display is also 3d.
SCORE: 8/10
Overall a good number of amazing looking scenes in this episode. Love the shots of the Kalos lab, Galar stadium, stage, waiting room, and town. It feels like you are actually looking into those places or even there with the characters. Some attacks and shots of characters look a bit flat with a handful that just look very wrong or bad. For the most part very good quality and way more dynamic and immersive to watch compared to regular 2D.
