Reviewing Journeys Episodes Watched in 3D

I'll be watching the Masters 8 in 3D each week and I'm going to share what its like and review the 3D quality, ranking scenes as Stunning, Great, Lackluster, or Bad 3D and describing what 2D Pokemon scenes look like after they are transformed into 3D.

It is sort of like the image above. Unfortunately this type of image only simulates a 3d effect and pales in comparison to what its actually like to watch this action unfold in 3D.

My first 3D episode review is of Journeys Episode 115, the clash between Alain and Leon.

STUNNING 3D: Top 5 Scenes

1. The stage with the lights and Masters 8 contestants looks sick. It's like looking through a portal into a live concert stage with lights crisscrossing physically in space moving across the stage. When Leon takes the stage standing in a translucent 3D red pillar of light emerges and the way it is surrounded by the other spotlights and champions looks incredible. They all appear clearly separated out in space.

Ash viewed from below the stage looks like you are literally looking up over the edge of physical stage at him because the stage is coming out at you, and the shot of him shown from above waving his arms feels like you are up in the spotlight with him. Super cool.

2. All shots of the stadium! In the birds eye view the metal arch above the stadium protrudes out of the screen and the stadium floor appears far below. The shot of the whole stadium sitting in the town looks like a real mini Galar stadium would if it were situated in a diorama. Feels like you could reach in and grab it.

3. The shot where Ash walks into the stands to sit with Hop and Go. Feels like you are up their with them and their is great depth and distinction to each row and spectator/Pokemon behind them, with the trio popping off the screen

4. Alains Charizard. It really looks like its standing in the stadium ready to face off against Leons Rillaboom. When it flare drives right through Rillaboom's roots, the roots are coming out of the screen with tendrils sweeping in behind the main part of the roots. Charizard is surrounded by a translucent ball of fire with the stadium seats in the back drop as he flies towards the screen bursting through the attack. The shot looks twice as epic in 3D. Chestnaught spinning along the Gigantamax attack looks equally awesome. He comes towards then slightly out of the screen.

5. Leon and Alain walking in. The line diagonal line that divides them into separate views splits them off into their own separate 3d spaces making a really cool effect. Like two separate windows into 3D spaces in the same screen.

GREAT 3D:

1. The Kalos lab. Looks convincingly 3d inside and outside. Really feels like you are in the lab with them, with nice distance between Garchomp the others and then the monitor even though they are all positioned diagonally.

2. Hop holding his Pokemon after the loss. He and his Pokemon are actually projected out of the screen. When the animation of Leon pops up as he mentions his brother, it is cool because it appears in layers. Leon appears in 3D on top of the orange background with Hop sticking out of the screen and the Ash/Go pop up bubbles floating beside him.

3. People standing around in the town as the drones fly overhead look like they are standing in a 3d space/town

4. The whole Iris selfie scene. It looks really cool when she is taking the selfie though because Steven and Lance are out in front and the three girls appear back in the room making the scene feel really realistic, where it just feels flat watching it in 2D and you miss out on that completely.

5. Ash and Iris running through the hallway. It's like a 3d corridor with real depth. When they come through the doors the two of them pop off the screen and the hallway appears like a physical space behind them that could be reached into.

LACKLUSTER 3D:

1. When fireblast collides with the psychic attack, the whole thing looks flat The original image is a bit unclear so the shapes seem to be not very well detected and separated out.

2. When Leon and Alain release their Pokemon. The blue Pokeball beams end up at the same level of depth of the stadium entrance hallway throwing off the effect.

3. The side view of Ash, Go and Hop as the battle begins. Not enough distance between them and it looks too flat

4. Chesnaught punching his opponent. His arm is on the same level as the hair of Leons Rillaboom, so it feels a bit off.

5. The green pin missile barrage attack looks too flat, could look really cool if everything was more spaced out

BAD 3D:

1. Jessy standing in front of the stadium. Her hair was misinterpreted and is displayed at the depth level of the stadium stairs making it look chopped off.

2. From behind the challengers on stage looking out at the stands just before the match ups are displayed on screen. The middle entry ramp of the stadium is misplaced to the same level as Leons hat. Although everything else there looks great, that totally throws off the visuals and is weird to look at.

3. Not actually technically bad, but the selfie camera shots end up having team rocket popping out of their camera, which shouldn't happen unless their camera display is also 3d.

SCORE: 8/10

Overall a good number of amazing looking scenes in this episode. Love the shots of the Kalos lab, Galar stadium, stage, waiting room, and town. It feels like you are actually looking into those places or even there with the characters. Some attacks and shots of characters look a bit flat with a handful that just look very wrong or bad. For the most part very good quality and way more dynamic and immersive to watch compared to regular 2D.

Honestly Id love for you to continue this thread for all Masters 8 episodes and other select episodes, it's a cool introspection
Thats the plan! I will at the very least continue it for the Masters 8 episodes and then maybe continue after that depending on how things go. Since there is kind of a long break going on right now I was thinking of doing one in between of maybe a Sun and Moon episode or one from one of the other seasons. Let me know if you have any requests for which season I'm interested in doing a 3D episode review for any of them. I'll probably post the review on Friday.

In this post as requested I will be reviewing Sun and Moon Episode 144: From Z to Shining Z!, where the battle between Ash and Kukui concludes. Like last time the review will be from the standpoint of how good it looks in glasses free 3d. And wow did this episode NOT disappoint!!

STUNNING 3D: Top 13 Scenes (too many to narrow this one down! Mostly getting better from top to bottom this time)

1. The very first shot of the battle looks awesome! Kukui is coming out of the screen with both pokemon hovering in the sky and Ash at the far end of the stadium. Its a great angle to appreciate the stadium from the battlefield with the scoreboard and Alola style viewing tower appearing physically 3d above the layered spectator seats (and palm trees appear further out beyond the walls of the stadium)

2. Close up shot looking down at the floating pokemon towards Kukui and then Ash as they talk to them. The pokemon float off the screen and appear very sharp in 3d, with their trainers appearing quite a distance below looking up at them creating a cool effect.

3. The shot from behind Kukui as Naganadel fires a sludge born from the air. The sluge bomb shots fly in all directions towards the ground and appear to be flying through the air, some even coming right up to/a bit out of the screen. Looks super dynamic

4. The scissor cross and steal wing clash. This happens fast, but looks epic in 3d, with Naganadel coming out of the screen and Tapu Koko floating out in front of the stadium room have the combination of great depth and fast paced action

5. First magical shine used. When Kukui waves his hand to command the attack from his shoulders up he is coming out of the screen a bit and it looks crystal clear, then Tapu Koko flys with the camera following slighly behind/to the right and the magical shine effect pops out of the screen as the camera follows along.

6. Ash recalling Naganadel. This looks beautiful in 3d. The blue/red recall beam covers the bottom half of the screen coming out of it and actually has different layers of depth with Ash clearly behind and then the stands behind him. Then the beam takes the shape of an arc that stretches through space going back to his pokeball and this looks so cool, like you could reach under the arc of the beam. Once the beam disappears the stadium entrance door and the details and textures become visible and look super clear and the textures look very 3d even though it is all behind Ash and Pikachu

7. Tapu Koko uses natures power (or something). It punches the ground and stones float up appearing really to float in space! and the purple lighting bolt effects look beautiful in 3d. Then Pikachu's electric net comes down on top of that from a view behind Kukui and it looks like theres actually an electric net out in the middle of the field. looks dope

8. Trails of smoke as pikachu's quick attack collides with Tapu Koko. This view is looking up at the sky with the edge of the stadium wall and trees behind visible all with appropriate 3d depth positioning. The smoke trails coming from Tapu Koko spiral in different directions all beautifully at different depths towards the screen against the blue sky backdrop making this shot look amazing

9. 2nd electric net. Tapu Koko appears physically trapped within and each line of electricity is clearly separated out from Tapu Koko, the stadium floor looking. As Tapu Koko struggles around inside the net and all its details move around in space shockingly realistic (no pun intended)

10. The Stadium viewed form across the water as an explosion shoots out of the stadium when Tapu Koko blasts back thunderbolt breaking out of electric net. This is absolutely breathtaking in 3d. The stadium really appears out there on the water and the electricity explosion looks like it is rising up really from within, not on the same level of depth as the stadium walls, with the sky and clouds even further behind

11. Powering up for the Z moves. Everything looks really crisp in 3d like its happening before you and the energy that surrounds kukui appears like this thin wisp/aura around his body that looks very 3d. Then Tapu Koko floats in a clear ball of yellow energy that appears very spherical with stones rising from the ground actually floating in space and when the ground cracks open beneath the crevice apears to actually drop off far below! The shot from behind Ash as the stones are floating into the air and protruding from the ground looks epic!

The shot from near the ground as giant Topu Koko begins to rise looks so cool. The broken ground is coming out of the screen like a low level wall in front of you with the giant rising in the middle and the seats far behind as it stands to tower before Ash. And the shot from behind Ash's friends as the stand to cheer him on looks sick. Its like you are actually standing behind them looking into the stadium with the shining giant rising in the middle of the battlefield and stones floating in the air around it.

12. Pikachu's z move. When ash puts his hat on Pikachu the shot is from an above angle close to pikachu and you can see the depth between the lid of the cap and pikachus face making it look really realistic. the cap looks rounded like it would in real life and is sticking out of the screen. Everything that follows looks gorgeous. The rains shining from Ash's band, the sparks flying from pikachus cheeks, the text that pops way off the screen displaying the name of Tapu Koko's z move, and his giant fist viewed from the side that comes smashing down through the air, everything looks epic. There is real depth to the casm that opens up in the dark clouds above as lightning strikes. Pikachu's detailed 3d form becomes consumed in electrical energy and this looks super clean and 3d.

The multicolored lightning bolts are slightly disappointing and don't appear super distinctly spaced out. However the side shot of the "head" of Tapu Koko's giant looks like you are sitting on its shoulder coming out of the screen with the Tapu Koko itself in the middle of the space within the screen and looks very realistic.

That final shot though as the camera spins around Ash and Pikachu pushing pack the giants arm is breathtaking. Feels like you right out in the battle field with them experiencing that dynamic action as the ground breaks apart under the force of the attack. The last shot of the multicolored electricity looks nice as it curves towards the fist. Ash's hair and Pkachus hat blowing in the wind from the explosion look really cool. And there is a final beautiful shot from closer up out on the water.

(have to add the entire opening looks gorgeous in 3d)

13. The final shot zooming out of the stadium looks like you are following a drone watching this with your own eyes in 3d and then the final painting like image of Ash and Pikachu as the narrator says congrats not only pops off the screen but actually has 3d contours and dimensions. Its absolutely beautiful! Art like that has a completely different feel and comes to life when viewed in 3d in a way that really is hard to image just looking at the original still 2d image. (You know technology is really groundbreaking when it makes your jaw drop repeatedly on a daily basis)

GREAT 3D:

1. Tapu Koko floating above the smoke created by dragon pulse. The smoke clearly apears to be kicked up down below him and then Naganadel flys up out of it and scissor cross sends Tapu Koko into the sky with a great depth effect as Tapu Koko is sent flying away from the screen into the sky.
2. Shots of Gladion watching the match. He really pops out of the screen especially when he leans forward with clear real distance between his bangs and shirt and face, and his head appearing closer to you than his shoulders and chest because his leaning

3. Naganadel being knocked back and flipped backwards by magical shine. The camera is right up against Naganadel as this happens and it literally looks like you are physically looking over the slope of its arched body towards the ground that appears way below. Its a really cool effect

4. Shot of the scoreboard from below after Naganadel goes down looks perfect. The tv screen appears a bit off the actually wall as it should and all the details are given the perfect amount of 3d depth making you feel like you are really stairing up at the scoreboard!

5. High five between Kukui and Tapu Koko. From this side view they are close to the screen with the floor nicely separated out from them like it would be in real life. The wall to the spectator seats is made of bushes and it actually has been given a 3d texture making it appear more realistic

6. Tapu Koko touching Kukuis wrist. Almost looks like you could reach out and detach the Z move band from his wrist. Very good depth and detail.

7. Kukui hopping over the wrecked ground of the stadium to check on Tapu Koko shows off a lot of great 3d detail of the physical shape of the broken up ground as he runs across it with the stadium looking really nice surrounding them.

LACKLUSTER 3D:

1. The dragon pulse animation. It mostly happens with a flashy background and the effect ends up a bit flat looking.

2. The electric field at the beginning. The pulses of electricity don't really appear to be separated out in space from the stuff they overlay so its a bit disappointing.

3. Close up spectator shots. The shots of Ashs classmates up closs look kind of flat. theres a lot of yellow going on without much actual art detail and it probably throws off the AI conversion a bit because the layers of seating, can't be easily distinguished

4. Naganadel getting electrocuted in the air. this shot looks a bit flat overall and one of the trees behind the stadium looks like its actually physically closer to you than the wall of the stadium itself

5. Tapu Koko hit by first thunderboldt. The stadium and everything looks nice, but the depth bolts are not quite spaced out enough in the air (although there is some depth and it looks cool enough)

BAD 3D:

1. The close up shot of Tapu Koko flying after Naganadel near the ground. The pokemon look amazing, but the ground comes up too much making it look like its really bulging and doesn't match the standium situated behind/around it very well.

Conclusion:

This episode must be re-watched in 3d if you ever have the chance. Absolutely breathtaking from start to finish. A lot of this is thanks to the detail and care put into the original animation, which was very high quality to begin with. High quality animation tends to be converted even more convincingly into 3d and that just compounds the fact that the animation looked great to begin with, so once it ends up in 3d the result is nothing short of jaw dropping. The characters, attacks, stadium, z moves, battlefield, everything is gorgeous in 3d. This one gets a 10 out of 10 from me.

SCORE: 10/10

Thank you so much for this!!!
Honestly not a surprise the 3D animation is so good considering this episode is easily the best animated episode Pokemon has ever done, and hopefully JN beats it with Leon, although it seems unlikely

If you can, I'd like you to cover more significant battles of the series!!

Bortgreen

Captain Pikachu is EPIC
This is the kind of thread we never knew we needed, really cool to know how it goes. The imgur gifs already look stunning, imagine seeing it live
I was sure the spinning camera finale would be breathtaking, it already is awesome in 2D

Maybe you could try a XY episode next? That series did very crazy things with the camera and it might be incredible with actual 3D

This next 3D review is of Pokemon Journeys Episode 116, Lance vs Diantha.

I am going to change of the format a bit and just focus on the top 5-10 stunning and great 3d moments and give an overall conclusion at the end.

STUNNING 3D:

1. The opening shot of the stadium from above brings you in immediately. You can really see far down into the stadium and the battlefield looks HUGE and realistic thanks to the angle of image.

2. When Lance commands dragonite to fly up and slam down on Diantha's pokemon his movements and dragonite's look perfect in 3d, everything has amazing depth like when dragonite leans forward and clenches its jaw bracing to jump its head comes out of the screen and so does lances fist as he commands it. Then as it rises up it looks like a real mini dragonite is rising up within the screen in front of you towards the steel stadium arch overhead making what otherwise wouldn't be a very memorable scene or flashy attack look super cool

3. Reflect used to block dragonite's second slam looks like a beautiful multicolored 3D wall with depth beyond it when viewed from either angle. It looks gorgeous

4. Lance tossing his pokeball towards the screen with Gyarados stretching itself upward menacingly looks absolutely epic and majestic in 3D. Its like you are staring up at red gyarados from right below it with its powerful body coming out of the screen and head appearing high up and far away but still having the huge stadium backdrop

5. The explosion when Gyarados's first dragon pulse collides with gourgeist's light screen is amazing in 3d. Its like theres a min battlefield (or maybe I should say a shrunken gigantic one) with a powerful explosion that appears perfectly placed in the middle of everything with the cloud of smoke appearing somewhat spherical and then rapidly expanding right towards you/the crowd. Then gourgeist is sent blasted backwards flying diagnally towards and partway out of the screen

6. The mega stone necklace on Diantha and gardevoir swinging as they begin to emit beams of light especially with the detailed close up shots have the stone coming out of the screen and it looks absolutely beautiful, like you could reach out and grab it. The whole animation sequence is gorgeous already but even better in 3D. They way the mega symbol flashes and pops out of the screen at the end is a nice touch

7. When dragonite goes dynamax. The clout that appears even farther above the stadium archway looks ominous in 3D its awesome. Dragonite looks even more like a behemoth in 3D after dynamaxing. Then when moon force smashes through the ice dynamax attack, it looks like a physical ice bal shattering in front of you with the moon force ball of energy flying through it at you, then when dragonite blocks it with its arms everything also has near perfect depth and looks really cool with this awesome sense of scale.

8. Dynamax dragonite stomping. The sense of power you feel when watching this in 3D really is shocking. I was litterally taken aback it looks so cool, which goes to show how impactful the 3D makes this, because I barely noticed it even happened in 2D. Then the fissure that emerges and the light that engulfs mega gardevoir from it is very 3d looking light a surge of a wall of light rises up to overwhelm gardevoir looking translucent but 3d at the same time

9. The final hyperbeam/moonforce sequence is breathtaking. The moonforce attack itself looks like a perfect 3d sphere from all angles and the way mega garevoir looks in the moonlight is mesmerizing. As it flys towards dragonite and dragonite grimaces before taking the hit it looks like this is all really taking place right in front of you. The pillar of light that emerges before the explosion appears right in the middle of the battlefield and the whole things just looks epic

GREAT 3D:

1. Dragonite's first hyperbeam looks awesome, including the collision with multi layered light screen. Dragonite leans back to charge up the attack and its wings are flexed behind it with nice depth between its arms and wings and then the spectator seats way behind it. Then when it fires it off, this pulse effect encircles dragonite and the hyperbeam flys through that towards its opponent. The collision with the barriers all separated out looks really nice

2. The Kalos group with the rounded screen looked awesome and the wall and TV look physically rounded.

3. The Gyarados aqua tail. Especially when it slams into gourgeist who slips into the background barely warding off the attack with reflect as the aqua tail rushes across the srceen in front of you, this looks really cool.

4. Ice fang. When gyarados opens its mouth there is even depth into its mouth which makes it look even more intimidating and then the way gourgeist dissapears into the ground with a purple shadow effect rising up in 3D makes this whole scene look even better

5. Shadow pulse looks so cool in 3D because there are lots of rings that are spaced out that form the attack and it looks really spectacular to see that in motion in 3d, especially alongside the resulting collision with gourgeist and the explosion of smoke

Conclusion

Overall the episode was filled with really nice looking 3D (dragonite basicallhy looks aweseome in every shot/moment), some absolutely stunning. However, there were also a noticeable amount of shots that just turned out a bit flat or even look weird because the 3D was incorrect. For example, the Kanto group shots unfortunately look a bit messy and the 3D was ended up placing depth kind of all over the place so it wasn't very good. One close up of the scoreboard at the beginning of the match has Lance popping way off the scoreboard screen and Diantha flat next to him. It looks cool but funny at the same time.

Despite the underwhelming shots and some odd ones, there were a lot of great and amazing scenes too and this episode was very entertaining and immersive to watch in 3D, turning some scenes that would have been very forgettable to me into ones that are now extremely memorable.

Score: 8.5/10

Pokemon Journeys 3D Review 4: Episode 117 VS Shirona! Iris's Road to Dragon Master!

STUNNING 3D:

1. Both Hydropumps. You get multiple very cool angles of hydropump in quick succession. Mylotic looks at the screen and fires the shot at the viewer. Then it shifts to show it flying into the screen and hitting Excadrill. The next shot is the coolest with this giant shot of water zooming behind Cynthia with her standing pretty much off screen and that appearing actually fly quickly across the battlefield behind her. Its super cool to watch in 3D and feels really immersive.

2. The second muddy water. It looks great as it rushes towards Excadrill, but the shot of the torrential waves up against the screen looks wicked cool. The waves look very powerful and not only come out of the screen, but have amazing depth across the surface of the. turbulent water making it feel almost as if its going to pour out of the screen. Definitely makes the attack feel 10x as frightening as it does watching it normally.

3. The first Draco Meteor. The coolest part here is when Haxorus has red energy shine around it powering up for outrage and the meteors come crashing down all around it. They look super cool in 3d and then the best part is when everything goes into slo-mo as Haxorus navigates through the powerful cluster of meteors. They appear huge up close and pop out of the screen with amazing depth to everything that is in the field of view.

4. Mega evolution! When Cyntha holds out her lipstick with the stone in it it looks very 3d, even with the screen divided in 2. Then 4 beams of light rotate as they shine out of the screen and tranform into the energy that connects to Garchomp to begin the evolution sequence. Cynthia does a 360 and poses halfway through and the way she stands there with very convincing 3D contours looks so cool. The stone appears in front of garchomp as it and the pokemon stick out of the screen with the energy beams in the background before being engulfed in mutlicolored energy. This looks gorgeous to albeit slightly harder to make out exactly whats going on in 3D possible because the colors all sort of blend together, but there is still depth to it. Mega-garchomp posing in front of the mega evolution symbol looks fierce.

5. The final draco meteor sequence! This was top notch! From the moment the plasma like energy forms at the tip of Garchomps nose everything looks beautiful. As the pulsating purble and blue energy auro surrounds Garchomp it stands out as a gorgeous 3d see through layer. Iris looks perfect as she commands dragon pulse with her hand waving outwards and her long champion garment sleeve waving in 3D coming out of the screen. As Haxorus leans back to wind up and deliver the attack its tail and head/horns pop out of the screen with the glowing pink energy ball even closer to the viewer.

Then the dragon pulse is fired off and it is shown in front of Ash/Go, the champions and team rocket and it looks very powerful and menacing. The next shot shows draco metero erupting into many different metiors that beautifully fly in all directions including at and out of the screen in 3D. What ensues is an amazing sequence where the different streams of the dragon pulse fly in different layers and collide with individual meteors in mid air causing explosions that also have their own depth. The view from behind the announcer standing up in his room is breathtaking and truly thrilling to watch as the numerous meteor streaks and explosions stretch across the entire battlefield in the air.

The meteors and energy beams come crashing to the ground around Haxorus physically behind, next to and in front of it and then there is a really cool birds eye view of the entire stadium where you can clrearly see the archway stretching overhead and the giant ball of smoke sticking up below that. Feels like it would if you were flying over in a helicopter to look down at the aftermath. The pink defense barrier up close in front of Ash/Go/Hop looks cool in 3D too. Even the final shot of multiple layers of smoke drifting away in front of and behind Haxorus and Garchomp before Haxorus goes down looks epic.

This sequence alone makes the episode more than worth watching in 3D.

Conclusion

This episode had a few major highlights as described above, including honorable mentions like when mega garchomp and haxorus clash for the first time. The shots of all cameos like the whole Unova group, and electivire/infernape with their trainers standing outside a stadium, and Iris's mentor watching from the street in town all look coo and feel like you are actually looking into each of those scenes/locationsl. However in general things looked a little bit too flat or just a bit off in terms of the 3d for more shots than the other episodes I have reviewed so far. Possible reasons for this include the lighting being darker overall or complicated things going on on screen. For example when Milotic wraps around dragonite, the AI doesn't do a good job of brining the body of Milotic wrapped around dragonite out to different levels of depth, it kinda looks like its all on the same layer. Some similar problems to other episodes like layers of the spectators and their pokemon being in different rows but having certain body parts appear at the same level of depth, or someones hair appearing where it shouldn't occured a bit moore frequently than the other episodes.

The top 5 scenes in this episode really bring up the overall score though because of how amazing and immersive they are.

Score: 7.5/10

Can't wait for Steven vs Ash !

Pokemon Journeys 3D Review 5: Episode 118 Satoshi Goes into Battle! VS Daigo!!

STUNNING 3D:

1. Pauls house lol. From the moment it is shown outside, to the different shots inside that place looks borderline real. As in you really feel like you are looking at and then inside their home. Looks like you are looking over shallow sloped grassy hill to their log home, with the forest in the background. Then the shot inside shows their TV (with the live match) on a wooden tv stand that looks super 3D, so does the yellow couch with the brothers sitting on it looking across their spacious living room to watch the match. Even the edge of the stone fireplace next to the TV looks super 3D. In the front view of them, Paul and his brother pop out of the screen, with the couch behind them and then the railway to the stairs further back in the background. Scenes like this kind of just slip by unnoticed when watching in 3D, but it really makes you do a double take when watching in 3D because of how the environments come alive.

2. Aggron's heavy bomber. This looks way cooler than I expected in 3D. When Aggron charges up and the steel aura surrounds it moving fluidly, it clenches its arms in front of its chest and everything looks crystal clear in terms of 3D depth. You can see the arms coming out of the screen, the gap between its arms and torso, its arms and tail going backwards as it leans forward and braces to charge with its head and horns coming out oof the screen and knees popping out somewhat too. Then it pops out of the screen for a brief moment as it zips by in a close up. The actual collision looks nice too, with both Pokemon in mid air appearing halfway across the stadium depth-wise and having the wall and spectators further behind. The energy waves that pulsate outwards after they collide also have pretty good depth considering this happens very fast.

3. Cradily charging up for meteor beam. This sequence is gorgeous. Cradily's face up close pops out, with its tendrils going back into the screen and them coming around towards the viewer all with great depth. Then the energy ball and waves of energy appear even closer to the viewer and look very clear. Then the green energy tendrils are shown holding Gengar as it struggles and are positioned as if they are going into the screen from outside it and Gengar is right on the level of the screen so it looks pretty cool. I love the next angle showing Satoshi (supper back and above) who comes nicely out of the screen feeling close to the viewer gazing at Gengar his is way back out in the battlefield, but yet has great detail in the depth of the energy tentacles that are holding it. The shots that ensue after that culminating in the energy beam colliding with magical shine look great and create an explosion that reminds me of the one in Gyarados vs Gourgheist filling the middle of the stadium battlefield.

4. Mega evolution. The pin with the mega stone is shone up close first in beatiful 3d detail popping way out of the screen and then moves into the screen as Steven's hand comes over to grasp it and sticks out. He then brings it up in front of him and everything from his hand, face, and hair, to the beams of light that shine from the stone look sooo clean. The shot of Metagross's leg with the stone attached looks really nice too. Then when the evolution begins and metagross becomes multicolored it maintains better 3D depth that previous mega evolutions had for some reason making it look extra cool. It finishes with a cool pose in front of Steven with all its legs coming together and the camera is in the middle so its like looking down a funnel towards its face with 3D depth. It looks pretty cool! Then the camera forcefully jumps backwards and to an angle with rapid waves of dust kicked up and flying towards and off the screen as the mega evolution symbol appears and that whole shot looks epic.

5. Z move. The way the camera rotates around Ash as he holds his fist out and energy charges, and the same for Pikachu as it spirals around them looks really cool in 3d the way the stadium floor is positioned relative to both of them and the nice depth to their poses. When Ash swings his fist back and then thrusts it upward to shout the name of the move it looks amazing in 3D. When his arm is fully up you can actually see depth between the bottom edge of his shirt blown outwards by the wind and his body. There is a view of the bolts zipping across the battlefield from above that shows nice depth and looks really cool because you can see the space between the thick bolts and the distance to the stadium floor and metagross positioned a bit far out, even with a 3D section of Steven's face divided out in the bottom left corner.

Then when the bolts fly at metagross one at a time and it dodges this looks wicked cool! The bolts actually have beatiful detail and flash across the screen but appear ouside of the screen with metagross clearly floating in mid air having beatiful 3D contours as it doges each bolt, despite all this happening very quickly. Then it show pikachu firing the bolts in the wrong direction with metagross charging up luster cannon beside it. Metagross pops nicely out of the screen, especially its arms, but then zooms backwards into the depth of the screen to fire the shot at Pikachu. The shots taking down Metagross and Pikachu's finisher with irontail also look clear and nice.

Conclusion

This episode had some really cool moments that did look stunning as described above, but surprisingly not to many others I would classify as close to stunning in 3D, mainly just the five I listed. With other episodes its usually hard to narrow it down and I could list up a lot of honorable mentions, but not with this one. The other scenes just look nice. On the flip side there are also less scenes that look flat and too underwhelming, although there are a few, and a handful that just appear odd as with other episodes. Cradily's tentacles and energy tendrils look beautiful in the scene I described above, but ok in others, and occasionally mis aligned in depth, so pretty inconsistent. Shots of the rivals and friends from Hoenn look nice, but not as cool as the Kalos gang shots, and there is a lack of impressive stadium angles in this episode too.

There is less jankity 3D overall and everything mostly looks good, but there are also probably the least amount of stunning shots out of the episodes reviewed so far, so overall it evens out to the same score as the previous episode.

Score: 7.5/10

The next couple weeks are going to be an interesting change of pace and I'm actually kind of looking forward to seeing how it all looks in 3D

Pokemon Journeys 3D Review 6: Episode 119 Koharu and Eevee- The Magic of Evolution!

This one took me a bit off guard because it turned out to be one of those recap episodes, rather than a proper episode. For that reason there was a major lack of scenes and angles that limit the potential of this episode more than probably most in the series so far. Just as a note, I first started watching Journey's episodes in 3D in early January, so this was the first time for me to see most of the flashback scenes that appeared in this episoode in 3D.

STUNNING 3D:

Sadly none

GREAT 3D:

1. Meeting Eevee in the Garden. The garden looks very pretty, especially viewed from the side angle. Feels like you are kneeling down in the path with the garden bushes right next too you and going back into the screen. Chloe and Yamper are midway into the screen depth-wise and the garden wall with the city even further behind it are set as a beautiful backdrop at the perfect depth to make this scene feel very real. Eevee coming out of the bushes looks nice too, with great depth to the different leaves and flowers that move aside as Eevee emerges. This is the closest one to making it into the Stunning 3D section, but still doesn't quite cut it.

2 Close ups of Chloe from various episodes.. Some of these look crystal clear with perfect depth, both in and out of the screen. It makes the character much more memorable viewed that way, like her expressions, hairstyle etc.

3. The electric attack. When Pelipper uses hydro pump it looks cool coming down at an angle in 3d, and then Eevee and Yamper use electric attacks at the same time, and fire of a bolt that also has really nice depth appearing midway into the screen as if its really flying through the air. The entire sequence isn't perfect but it looks nice, especially the close up of Eevee with the fur around its neck rising up, that looks great in 3D.

4. Huntail vs Vaporeon. Its really cool to see Huntail rushing towards Vaporeon surrounded in water because it feels like you are looking across the surface of the water in fast motion with Huntail enclosed in this sphere of water that has a nice 3D rounded effect. Then the angle changes and you are between the waves of water created as Huntail rushes towards the rocks where the characters wait and it feels pretty immersive.

5. Chloe and Lana. So far shots of Alola in general end up beautiful in 3D. This one was very simple and just had a couple of angles of the two talking and the Eevee's playing, but everything looked great. I like how the stone wall looks behind the Eevee chasing each other on the ground in front of it and the girls sitting on the wall, with the jungle behind them.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, the lack of actual content in this episode really impacts how entertaining it is to watch from a 3D perspective. The shots that actually look pretty nice are shown repeatedly, like the lab assistants at their desks. These look nice, but not phenomenal and after seeing it multiple times had me wishing they had given more unique angles and variety. Then there are some that don't look that good in the first place and are also shown repeatedly, making the experience not so great. I kept hoping to see more, only for it to keep coming back to Mr. Mime on stage and things like that.

The quiz interface that pops off with different layers and backgrounds and mini episode clips in the center frame looked pretty good. The text boxes and other icons float off the screen nicely. But the captions that pop up when Mr. Mime is on stage have really misplaced depth. It would look nice if the text all came off at the same level, but some of it is set back into the screen and it looks very uneven.

For other episodes in the past, views of the lab or inside houses have looked great, but the scene with the Chloe lookalike where they are in the old Japanese style room actually has the depth kinda messed up which was kind of unfortunate (although technically this is a problem with that original episode since it is a flashback).

Overall the scenes were repetitive and had quite a bit of lackluster 3D. And the 3D that looked best is all footage from flashbacks. I've never been bored watching a Journey's episode in 3D so far, but this episode was really pushing it. So in terms of a 3D viewing experience this one gets the lowest score that I would give any Journey's episode I've watched in 3D.

Score: 4.5/10

It's interesting how Alola always looks beautiful with 3D animation
I'm guessing it's due to Alola having more of its distinct personality thanks to it being the recent series as well as being a home region so having a well developed background that stayed throughout the series rather than random forests and cities each new episode

It may also be something to do with the style of art used for the locations. It tends to look amazing from the few episodes I've been able to watch that feature the Alola region. I do actually really like to see even random forests and other locations from various episodes in 3D, because it makes places that would normally feel boring to look at so much more immersive and interesting in 3D.

Pokemon Journeys 3D Review 6: Episode 120 Chloe and Eevee- The Possibilities are Endless!

STUNNING 3D:

1. Clefable Petal Blizzard. This one looked so mesmerizing. When the Clefairy ritual site is shown from above the lighting is perfect and you can see the group standing in the clearing way down below with the stone formations rising up around them and then the forest surrounding that. There are a few tall rock formations that are close to the screen and look like they are much taller than everything else in 3D and the nearest one comes out of the screen, so there is perfect depth contrast to everything in the view. Then the petals spiral and rise up towards the screen. It is a very beautiful scene to watch in 3D.

See here for clear image: Full Size High Quality

GREAT 3D:

1. The Cerise family home. From the views at the doorstep and the diagonal airborne shot look like actually viewing a Japanese neighborhood with nice homes. You can see the depth over the side of the stone fences bordering the houses, and the Cerise home looks very 3D, like a miniature home set. The car is parked in the road outside the driveway and then trees on the bottom right across the road come out of the screen.

Inside the house looks pretty good too. The different angles of the dinner table all look great, with the family situated around it, the table mostly coming out of the screen, and then all the appliances and everything behind that given proper depth placement making the scene feel very realistic. It really draws your attention to the layout of the dining room which is a super typical layout for Japanese homes.

2. The car ride. The side view of the car as they are about to drive off looks cool, because Chloe's brother and mom are coming out of the screen, with the car slightly further back, but you can see through the window of the car and the fence of the yard behind it looks like it would if you were actually looking through a car window, with real distance through the window. The views from inside the car as it is moving are also pretty convincing and I really like the one shot of the winding mountain road with the stone wall. Everything is perfectly placed in 3d.

3. The forest cabin. Had I watched this in 2D I don't think I would have thought twice about it, but watching it in 3D made me feel like I'd actually like to visit the place. There is a lot of detail in this one view that all looks great in 3D. The cabin itself is situated midway into the screen depth wise but you can still see the space between the deck and the ground below it, and then the path leading to the lake further back into the screen and all the other scenery make this look very beautiful in 3D.

4. Metronome electric attack. Whatever electric attack Clefairy used on the young professor actually looked really cool. It looked like he was really trapped inside this interestingly shaped electric grid.

5. Golbat appearing. This is the first time I've had fun watching Golbat do something in the Anime. The way it comes sweeping down through the air right at the screen over the edge of the cliff looks really cool.

Conclusion

This episode was much much better than the previous one and was very fun and pleasant to watch in 3D throughout.

The different parts of the Eevee evolution lab look nice. Same with the close ups of Chloe like last time, but the blue haired researcher had something weird going on with certain facial features and hair for some reason with the 3D. I also noticed that when still images like of the Eevee evolutions move across the screen horizontally fairly quickly the 3D becomes unstable like it can't keep up. Horizontal side scrolls and motion were used a lot in this episode, so it was hard not to notice the flickering or unstable images in those situations.

Everything else for the most part looked very nice. The different angles of the forest scenes, all the forest Pokemon, the Poliwag pond, campfire and other stuff all looked really great. The lack of stunning shots and repeated use of side-scrolling images brings it down a bit, but it was a good one overall.

Score: 6.25/10

I was wondering whether you would do posts for the Kalos League battles
Edit: I just posted the latest review of episode 120, which actually turned out really good in 3D. It is the last post of page 1.

Currently I am only able to convert Pokemon episode videos on Youtube 3D and the selection available to watch is limited. I think there is one from the Kalos league that is uploaded from the official account, so what I might do is review that episode for this week rather than doing the flashback episode that will air on Friday. I will still watch the new episode in 3D though just in case there is anything interesting or unique that happens worth talking about.
