Rival Showdown! Ash VS Bea!! (1174)

Everyone makes Ash dumb except for DP. DP is the best and consistently written series (better than XY) imo
In DP he was literally told to make sure to restrict his opponent’s movements before using Synthesis and instead he winds up using when his Pokémon is in a disadvantage or the opponent is able to move freely.

Not to mention that in DP it literally had Ash’s Grotle get advice on how to fight from Paul’s Torterra only to then later on make that entire scene pointless by having Grotle learn Rock Climb to increase its speed which wound up screwing it over when it became a Torterra.

Heck after Ash and his Grotle learned that Grotle could power up by eating Energy Ball they never use that strategy again .

Not to mention that after just experiencing it for one episode apparently that was enough for Ambipom to leave Ash and Dawn to go do Ping Pong.

So while DP had it’s moments when you look at it, it had just as many problems and inconsistencies in it’s writing as any other Pokémon series.

I think the calm intro and build-up scenes were actually the best part. My thoughts:
(+) Interactions between recurring side characters, in this case between GLs, is the kind of dynamic I always wanted to see more often in Journeys; same with their Pokémon. This helps us so much to become more attached to both Trainers and Pokémon and even to setup the battle in this particular case, loved all the cute and fun actings. I can see how a two-parte battle ep can avoid the little mistakes vs Volkner and vs Iris committed
(+) "Satoshi, from Kanto, who defeated Denji from Sinnoh region!" It seems that either it's a big deal to beat a Hyper Class participant, or it's a big deal to beat Volkner. In either case I appreciate the callback the announcer did
(+) Battle is solid so far despite the average animation and ME thing in the end. I like it when both Trainers give command to their Pokémon at the same time, just like what happened in the Volkner fight, cus it helps battle flow much better and shows how experienced Trainers must think fast during the match. As almost all the Pokémon here are Fighting type there was a lot of frantic exchanges of fists and kicks, which I really like to see animated. Lucario x Hawlucha just went full Dragon Ball Z there. Also Machamp is a beast
(+) Nice surprise cameo by Leon, the great Galar Gym Leader theme music just started playing when he appeared

(+-) Bea referring to Ash as "Riolu's Trainer" highlights Bea's aloof personality, but could also reveal just how tepid and chemistryless the main rivarly in Journeys is
(+-) Ash was sleeping on the bed and Goh on the floor. I like to imagine that this was some kind of metaphor by the staff to show that they are aware of Goh criticism and this time is reeeally about Ash lol

(-) Animation was mediocre for the most part
(-) Right, so Mega Evolution didn't work because of Lucario's pride, not because there wasn't any Mega training session before the battle? I would prefer him to learn to control the process of Mshinka throughout the match, similar to how Ash and Torracat did against Kukui
(-) Why is Ash's Riolu/Lucario so resistant? We may really have the new Lycanroc here...
(-) Ash: "I'm the one who will fight Leon!" Bea: "No, I will." Me: "??? it's perfectly possible for you both to face him." I love the idea of turn a strong female gym leader into Ash's rival, but that sort of dialogue just show how badly developed the rivalry between these two is.

Forget about Project Mew and PWC, I just want to see Pokémon eating and playing with each other from now on.

wow seriously Ash looked terrible here! Like he literally let lucario get beat up like that? The only interesting part of this episode was the korrina & bea interaction

More like she was MIA for over 40 episodes so of course she's completely out of the loop in that. Though I think I remember seeing her seeing Ash fight Volkner when he did use Lucario.

I really feel like people are overexaggerating Ash's 'ineptitude' here like holy **** people here would make you believe hes some Cameron lol. Clearly this episode is meant to set him up as an underdog so him overcoming it is more fun and builds up tension, like any setup
Ash showed skill with the way he tried to tie down Grappoloct with Electro web and immediately switched when being overcome, or how he was using Double team to sneak up on Grappoloct. He tried to counter both Hawlucha and Machamp as well. He didnt switch Lucario out coz he knows Lucario has great endurance and can withstand and he wanted to ME to get Lucario out of a pinch but Lucario did it himself without the boost, doesnt negate the fact Ash's decision was an understandable one. Hes gonna switch and utilise other mons in the next episode anyway, I really dont see how Ash is 'dumb' here

Funny you should mention that, since i actually think flow has been the thing that is missing the most from journeys battles aside from the early ones. This episode wasn’t any better for me in that front considering how much ash just let lucario took attacks, and called out a move like only once during the entire exchange with hawlucha.

The only ones with really good flow has only been visquez and the lance vs leon.

"The oppression of Poké Balls."
Man, that animation was not hittin. Outside of a couple Bullet Punch scenes, the animation was really stagnant.

Ash's performance here was kinda embarrassing. One moment he's switching Pikachu out, and the next moment he's letting his Lucario get its ass beat by Hawlucha and Machamp lol.
I'm also disappointed that Pikachu was sent out, since Gengar and Dragonite literally have a type advantage over Bea and it's no secret what type she specializes in.

The only part I really enjoyed was Korrina and Bea being close. Their different personalities make a nice combination, despite being Fighting girls. Bea's tactics clearly depend on the physiology of her Pokemon. Machamp and Grapploct use their many arms and overwhelming strength to grapple their opponents while Hawlucha uses its speed and flight to its advantage.

OMG CorniXSaito is a thing that I did not know needed to exist

Also Ash was horrible in the first round of the fight, I could hardly handle watching that. Really hope the second part makes up for that.

Korrina is a pretend Fighting-type, because her Mienfoo and Machoke aren't as important as Bea's whole team, which is deadlier.

(Is it strange Korrina didn't have a two-parter for her fight?)

Not much in the way of great animation for Episode #85 but it's still porn for a Tomioka Atsuhiro fan. Excellent commentary that explains Tomioka's thought-process for battles has always been the highlight of his battles and #85 is no exception. Another Tomioka classic is, of course, his grand use of switching out Pokemon mid-battle. This is something that the cartoon didn't do much up until Tomioka began to introduce the concept in his battles. Diamond & Pearl is where the mid-battle switching started up for real and I absolutely love how Tomioka doesn't just end battles cleanly, he'll change gears mid-battle to keep us on our feet. It's a big part of why his battles are so exciting!

Episodes like this show that writers could do great things if they wanted to. This episode has been the best of Journeys in a long time.

Tomioka has written many other episodes of the series. https://pastebin.com/raw/rYgnn1Xg

At least for Bea, just to make her appear more dangerous for no reason to Ash, who isn't doing it all of a sudden (maybe because suddenly his Lucario has pride when it didn't even care before).

Lucario didn't Mega Evolve here because he knew it wasn't the right moment to do so yet. Satoshi was going to blow his one chance at Mega Evolution too early on because he was worried about Lucario but Lucario kept his cool and it helped calm Satoshi down.

man with the way you guys talk about this animation so much you'd swear it was friggin Dragon Ball Super episode 5 it's fine, servicible like to me this felt like they were obviously saving it for next week where the meat and potatoes of the battle will take place
