Roads to Madness: A Survival/Psychological Horror Game (Rated M for Mature)

DVB

Philosopher Knight
Fear…

The primordial feeling...
Long has it been needed toward the survival. Fear comes in all forms, but one of the greatest is that of lonliness… No one likes being lonely. Facing those fears alones… It could do something to someone… Especially to a kid. But you must face those fears… Upon turning 13, the number of misfortune you will face the fear of life.

When one turns 13 in the Western world, it was the beginning of a trial. Where one leaves their innocence and discover themselves as they are changed from the outside and from within. 13... Both good and bad.

In this case, it was bad.

One day in Spring, around near the end of school, a boy had his birthday. His 13th birthday. However, it was also his deathday. For you see, you know or knew this boy. At one point or another, you saw this boy on his birthday and deathday. You talked to him. You saw the look in his eyes. It looked like there was something wrong, but you didn't ask. You don’t remember much about him, not even his name. You try to, but perhaps you are uncomfortable remembering so.
At the end of the day, it was heard that he was killed. Much blood was found and that incident occurred near a cliff.

No body was ever found and it faded into a scary story.

Now the years have passed. 7 years have passed...

How old were you on that day?

You were all in high school or maybe even in middle school. The point is, you all knew him. Back then, your last talking with him wasn’t good. Maybe he asked you and you said no harshly. Maybe you bullied him. Maybe you let him down when he needed you most.

Seven years later, now... are you in high school or college or maybe even a graduate. Who knows? You do? You became numb. You became another cog of the large machine of life. You think you have everything set. You are wrong.

You will be reminded of what terror means. You will be used as examples as to why the world as a gray area is a myth. You will be put to the ultimate test that will show whether you can become a 'hero' or simply descend to madness and become a 'devil'. Who knows? That's what makes it fun.

You receive a letter, inviting you stay at the large manor build months ago. The letter is black and written in blood-red cursive ink, it says you are invited for a challenge. You will be put to the ultimate test and winner(s) will be awarded $1,000,000.

You accept because with that kind of money, you would be set for life pretty much.

You all one way or another make your way to the house, unaware of awaits you. The invitation was sent on the kid’s birthday and the day where this begins would be on Friday the 13th in October and ending on Halloween night.

------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome everyone! It is now Day I. This RPG will be fairly fast-paced so we can try and finish it. Now, there is the good ending and the bad ending as well as the secret true ending.

By sometime this week, one of you will be chosen to be broken to the point of becoming the mad man's minion. So brace yourself everyone. It is Day I and it will test your limits on puzzles and riddles.

Rated M: Swearing, Violence, Distrubing imagery and adultery-related stuff.

Dexter saw it was overcast when he arrived at the massive manor. It was built pretty much in the middle of nowehre. Well, scenic nowehre. The area was beautiful. On that day, he was informed to get his stuff ready because someone would come to pick up early. It had been a long drive and now here they were.

Dexter waited for the others to come as he shuddered in his hoodie. He looked up through the windows and though he saw a mysterious person. He rubbed his eyes.

Probably just daydreaming, he figured.

?????????????

"Everything in place?" the figured asked his masked and cloaked minions.

"Yes, sir. The guests will arrive," one said, The figure simply nodded. "Good, then let everything proceed as planned," the figure told them as he looked down at the gathering guests.

"Let the games begin."

Benedict rolled over, it was way too early to be up. Although, today was the day of that party he and Jordon had been invited to. He thought of going to get ready, maybe make a pot of coffee, have a cigarette. He looked over at Jordon, he still looked fast asleep.

Benedict moved closer to the side of the bed, ready to hop out. He felt an arm wrap around him from behind, pulling him back onto the bed.

“Mmm, is’ too early.” Jordon mumbled, wrapping both arms around Benedict like he was some sort of plush toy. Benedict smiled slightly and rolled over.

“Jordon, we have to get up. We have to head to that mansion later.” He said, looking at Jordon. Jordon groaned and sat up, rubbing his eyes and running his fingers through his messy hair. He looked at Benedict, letting out a yawn before smiling at him.

“Is there any coffee?” Asked Jordon, looking at Benedict. Benedict shook his head.

“I’ll go make some while you get ready,” He replied. Hopping off the bed and slipping his dress pants and sweater on, before formally wrapping his scarf around his neck. Jordon grinned.

“Sounds good,” He smiled and pulled Benedict down by the scarf, planting a small kiss on his lips before sitting up and starting to get ready. Benedict blushed, walking down the hallway from their shared bedroom to the kitchen. Preparing a small pot of espresso. Jordon came down the hallway, fully dressed and grinned. Benedict poured the coffee into two travel mugs, ready to head out to the mansion.

Jordon started up his car, and drove him and Benedict to the mansion.

---------------------------------

Upon arrival, the duo noticed a boy, standing on his own by the mansion. Benedict had originally been unsure of leaving, of going to the mansion that is. But Jordon had insisted on it, due to their need for the money. Benedict finally agreed.

The two approached the boy, Jordon did the talking due to Benedict’s shyness hitting him rather hard.

“Hey, this is the place for that uh. Thing, right?” He asked, adjusting the straps of his backpack on his back.

Mandy’s beat-up second hand station wagon pulled up to the manor’s gates. Gee, this place really was in the middle of nowhere, no cell service (correct me if I’m wrong), and her radio kept picking up static instead of playing the station clearly.

She slowed down as she rolled up to the extravagant building. It was really nice, but she wasn’t sure she’d want to live in such a big place for very long, it was a lot to worry about. Well, then again, the people that lived in places like this tended to have enough money to hire maids, butlers, and caretakers.

There were three guys waiting out front. She wasn’t sure if they were taking a smoke break or what. Obviously, it would be in poor taste to keep guests waiting at a place like this, unless the host wanted them all to see it at once for some sort of shock value, yawn.

Mandy parked the car and turned off the headlights. She got out, pulling a small duffle black bag out after her. The letter had said something about the challenge taking place over the course of days, and she wasn’t about to wear the same shirt for that long. She addressed the guys as she strolled up to the entryway, “Well, this is certainly far enough out of the way, isn’t it?”

It was dull and somewhat cold. Allison was starting to seriously regret bringing a jacket, because her work clothes were not cutting it.

Handing the taxi driver his payment for driving her so far out, she stood up straight. She was here.

She stumbled up the entryway towards the large mansion, cursing lack of foresight. Had she thought, she could have gotten home and changed into something perhaps more suitable for the challenge. As it stood, she was in her receptionist outfit and was regretting it.

Ahead, she saw three guys and another woman, presumably the others in the challenge. The cruel and pessimistic voice in her head told her she was doomed. The others were probably more suited for whatever challenge they had been challenged to. She shook it off. No use going into this with those sorts of thoughts.

“Hello.” She said cheerfully. “I take it you guys are here for the ‘challenge’ too? Excited?”

A taxi rolled up the manor’s driveway. A blonde woman in nice clothes, of the sort worn in an office setting, stumbled out. The taxi pulled away, the driver eager to get back to civilization where there might actually be some one for him to pick up. The woman recovered her stride and addressed Mandy and the boys, “Hello. I take it you guys are here for the ‘challenge’ too? Excited?”

“Eh, yeah,” sighed Mandy, “Hopefully it’s not a total waste of time… You’d think they could at least let us in to the foyer.”

She looked down at the duffle bag by her feet. The boys did try knocking, didn’t they? At least she had a ride out of here if they never got inside, this poor girl… well, she probably should offer her a ride back to town if that happened.

Dexter took a look to see who else was coming. According to the list, there were two more people missing. He took a note to see who arrived. Two were a gay couple. They seemed nice enough. Hope this didn't shake them up. Dexter got the creeps from this place.

Besides them, one was a rather cheery girl and another a serious one. Dexter took a deep breath before the door opened. Inside the manor, it was internestingly decorated. While ornate, it wasn't gaudy or overly flashy.

The floor was checkboard marble and there were columns. There were several doors and the massive stairway leading up to the second floor where more stairs could be seen to different floors where they will face their fears.

"Looks the challenge will begin soon," Dexter muttered before knocking on the door to get everyone's attention and he led them inside. Unbeknowist to him, there were several cameras watching them.

The shadowy figure looked on before he made note of them. Beside one, he stared.

They would be a nice start.

In front of the group was a lone pillar with a pillow and a note on it. Dexter went to read it.

"Welcome to the most painful time of your life. Your physical and mental strengths will be pushed to the limit. While one may win the money, all of you will learn a valuable lesson or more." Dexter read out loud before putting the note.

He was admittingly a bit creeped out, especially when they didn't notice, steel doors covered the windows, and the only opening left was the grand door.

Benedict smiled at the two women who had joined their group, they both looked rather friendly, the male ahead of him seemed to be leading the pack. Benedict kept his eyes on him as he walked up the stairs to the manor, the door swinging open to reveal a rather nice looking place. It wasn’t extremely flashy, although it had that aura of cleanliness and tidiness.

Benedict was jolted from his thoughts as Jordon grabbed his hand, they slowly walked into the manor. Jordon looked around, scanning the area with his eyes, trying to figure out where to go from here. He nodded slightly to the stairs when the other boy pointed them out, Benedict supposed that’s where the challenge lay.

Benedict felt eyes on him, this made him slightly nervous. He looked around and was unable to spot the cause of his distress, so he shook it off as nothing more than the creeps.

Benedict heard the other male begin to speak again, him and Jordon stood, full attention as he spoke.

"Welcome to the most painful time of your life. Your physical and mental strengths will be pushed to the limit. While one may win the money, all of you will learn a valuable lesson or more."

Well that certainly sounded mysterious, he looked up at Jordon to see a bit of a confused expression crossing his face.

“So, yeah, that’s all fine and dandy. But where do we sleep?” Asked Jordon, causing Benedict to grin and roll his eyes playfully. Of course Jordon would ask a question like that in a mansion like this.

Finally the doors opened and the group was able to walk into the foyer. Mandy scanned the lavish entryway, from here she could see halls, doors, stairs, marble floors, pillars, and a pedestal with a pillow and a note on top.

"Looks the challenge will begin soon," commented the guy in the hoodie as he knocked on one of the doors.

The guy in the hoodie walked up and read the note off the pedestal aloud:
Welcome to the most painful time of your life. Your physical and mental strengths will be pushed to the limit. While one may win the money, all of you will learn a valuable lesson or more.

Was that supposed to scare them?

Looking around further Mandy realized the windows were covered in steel plates, like a lock-down from an action movie. Ooooh, spooky… yeah right. Apparently the front doors were the only obvious way in and out of the building. Of course the staff probably had another entrance, but they’d try to hide it for effect.

“So, yeah, that’s all fine and dandy. But where do we sleep?” joked one of the other guys. Mandy smirked slightly, okay, that was almost funny. This place was huge. She set her bag down and called out to hoodie guy, “So that’s it? No other instructions?”

The group of them entered the manor, following the guy in a hoodie who seemed a little less open than the others. Allison’s cheerful grin faltered slightly, slightly unnerved by the way that the manor seemed somewhat empty. Unlike quaint houses that seemed oh-so inviting and willing to accept, this one seemed a little unwelcoming. Maybe it was because the ‘challenge’ loomed in her mind.

Other than her slight fears against it, it seemed nice on the inside. Columns on the wall, a simple checkerboard style floor, grand stairs leading up to the other floors and the assorted corridors and doors leading off in many directions to the rest of the manor.

The hoodie boy went to a pillar that stood alone in the hallway, on which sat a pillow and a note.

"Welcome to the most painful time of your life. Your physical and mental strengths will be pushed to the limit. While one may win the money, all of you will learn a valuable lesson or more." He read.

Allison’s lack of foresight into preparations was coming back to bite her. She’d never been very physically strong, and she was wearing heels. That did not make for a good combination.

One of the guys called out about where they were to sleep. She smiled, the joke at least in part brightening her up.

The other girl called out asking if that was it, and Allison wondered.

“Is there anything on the back, maybe?” she said.

"I guess we will be led to rooms soon enough," Dexter mumbled, shrugging his shoulders as he answered Jordon's questions. "Hopefully not in coffins or iron maidens," Dexter commented on before Mandy looked at him.

He raised an eyebrow.

The girl Allison then asked if there was anything on the back. He turned it. "The game will begin after a certain time or when all the guests have arrived," he read further.

"In the meanwhile, go to the dining room for a complimentary dinner," it said before lights became lit up, showing them to the dinner hall. Dexter went first. The doors were written in a language he did not understand. However he was suspicious of this place. It put him on edge. When he arrived at the dining table, he was shocked.

It was massive and beautiful. There were large amounts of foods of all sorts. Boar, turkey, phesant, lamb, beef, venison and so much more with exotic vegetables and fruits will large amunts of cheeses, breads and large amounts of desserts. The placemats were there with their names on cards with ornate utensils and large goblets. The sight, the smell, it made Dexter's mouth water.

"Wow..." Dexter said as he took place on his seat. It was large and orante, but also a bit creepy looking. Unknowist to them, the chair was modifed to serve two more purposes and hidden in a secret compartment of the magohany table was the machinery needed for the first game.

Hoodie boy flipped the note over in reaction to the other girl’s suggestion, reading the back, "The game will begin after a certain time or when all the guests have arrived. In the meanwhile, go to the dining room for a complimentary dinner.”

Lights came on showing the way to the dining room. Obviously they were being watched, there must be hidden cameras all over the place. Hopefully not in the showers.

Mandy followed him into the dinning room. There was sign in a foreign language on the door. Mandy shrugged, she didn’t know what it said, so if it was for some unnerving effect it didn’t work on her.

The table was piled with a classic buffet and place cards let them know who the host had intended to sit where. Well, might as well play along, decided Mandy sitting at the seat assigned to her.

“Do you think there’s something hidden in the food?” she asked as she examined the silverware and napkin on her placemat. They seemed clean. She set the napkin in her lap, “I mean like, something meant to scare us, or something that’ll matter later in the competition?”

Benedict fake smiled at Dexter’s comment about sleeping in coffins. He was scared enough as it was, although he highly doubted that would be the case. No one was that cruel... were they? He was distrupted from his thoughts when Dexter flipped over the note.

"The game will begin after a certain time or when all the guests have arrived," he read further.

"In the meanwhile, go to the dining room for a complimentary dinner,"

A complimentary dinner? Well, Benedict had to admit that he was pretty hungry, Jordon looked pretty hungry too. He watched as lights lit up, illuminating their way into the dining room. Benedict followed Jordon and the others into the dining room. He was still suspicious of the mansion, but his hunger was outweighing that suspicion.

Benedict saw a massive door, he watched as the other boy pushed it open, leaving a strange language to be pressed against the wall.

He was greeted by mounds of food, he watched as Jordon’s mouth also began to water at the smell. The placemats had all their names printed on them, specifying where they should sit.

He took a seat, the host had placed him and Jordon next to eachother, a blessing from somewhere obviously. Benedict heard Mandy speak.

“Do you think there’s something hidden in the food? I mean like, something meant to scare us, or something that’ll matter later in the competition?”

Jordon took his seat and shrugged, “Maybe, I’d certainly love to dig in at the moment though.” He replied, licking his lips. Benedict smiled.

“Hey, what if we, uh. Got to know each other a bit? The boy flipped it over per her suggested, and read.

"The game will begin after a certain time or when all the guests have arrived. In the meanwhile, go to the dining room for a complimentary dinner.”

As if on cue, lights turned on, lighting the way to what was presumed to be the dining hall. They went towards it, to the door with writing that most certainly wasn’t English, or any language Allison knew. Maybe it was just fancy ornate decorations to make people think it was a language. Just maybe.

Through the door, Allison stopped and stared. Food – lots of food – piled on the ornate mahogany table. Placemats with their names written assigned their seating positions, and Allison couldn’t believe it. Now she was somewhat glad she hadn’t gone home before calling the cab. She had room in her tummy for all the food, whereas she’d have eaten before coming otherwise.

Sitting at her spot, she felt overwhelmed. So much good food to choose from. Her stomach grumbled faintly in protest to her holding back. She didn’t want to seem a pig for eating first.

The two boys – the couple – decided it’d be best to introduce themselves. The red head was Benedict, and the dark-haired one was Jordan.

“I’m Allison.” She said cheerily. The darker voice in her head told her this would give them an advantage over her. Knowing how much of a team player, she’d probably help the others more than herself, especially if she knew if. She shook it out. There was always a chance.

Though apparently the five of them weren't the only competitors. There were apparently more, evidenced by what the note had said. That made her a little worried that maybe she’d be let down by her lack of preparation.

In the doorway of mansion stood Veronica. Late, sweaty, and tired but she had made it nonetheless. Her van had broken down along the way and she had been forced to haul her luggage the remaining mile, but only after calling up one of her friends and negotiating to have the truck picked up. As she had been told her friend's second cousin's uncle owned an auto shop and could "like, totally fix it up" as it had been put.

It was still along the highway so it wouldn't be too hard for the tow truck to find her beloved old 1994 van but it left Veronica on her own to navigate through a mess of back roads to get here. Just to be certain of where she was she pulled out her invitation one more time, reflexively blinking at the horrendous eyesore typed in red font on a black paper. A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she imagined how her design friends would react to the sight of it. If only it had been written in Comic Sans as well.

She scanned over the invite once or twice before feeling certain that this must be the place. And why not? The front door was wide open and everything! Placing a hand on the strap of her purse and the other on the handle of her suit case she stepped inside listening to the eerie silence.

Setting her wheel-bound luggage off to the side of the room she began to inspect it. No sign of anyone else, not that she could see. There was an empty pedestal, a stairway, and one of the hallways seemed lit up. Veronica chewed her lip for a moment as she stared up at the stairway. It felt like ages that she stood there looking up but she finally decided against it thinking she would have more luck down the hallway with lights.

"Hello?" she called out down the corridor, her voice echoing back slightly sounded almost not her own. Clearing her throat and filled with a little more confidence she tried again. "Is anyone there?"

A shaft opened slightly and a piece of paper landed in Veronica's face. The paper simply stated. "Everyone is at dinner. Tardy folk will suffer the worst."
The hidden cameras still watched the situation while the folk remain unaware of the truama about to be unleashed onto them in the upcoming days.

Dexter simply showed off his name card to introduce himself when the boys and Amanda did. He then turned to see the newcomer, Veronica come in. She is late and she looked like she was in a rush. Dexter simply began taking some food onto the plate and eating. It all looked so good.

He watched the girl take her seat.

When everyone finished stuffing themselves, fortune cookies appeared in the center. When they all opened theirs, they all said one thing.

"Let's play the first game."

Suddenly, there were all strapped by the waists and legs as headbands we placed on them by the chair. From under the tables, a large slip of paper appeared.

"Write your fears down and place them in the centerpiece. Your main fork doubles as a pen. Twist to use it. Liars and those who don't cooperate will be delivered a shocking surprise"

the paper stated while leaving the rest of the sheet to write on. Dexter cautiously grabbed the paper and began writing, not wanting to get shocked.

Benedict smiled at the other people who began introducing themselves and scooped some of the food onto his plate, aiming mostly for the vegetables, and the pastas. He still didn’t trust this place, and would honestly like as little blood on his plate as possible.

A new girl came in, taking a seat quickly and promptly. She didn’t say anything to anyone and seemed to be in somewhat of a rush.

Benedict finished eating watching Jordon, and the rest of the group do the same. He wiped his mouth with the serviet slowly and jumped slightly when fourtune cookies appeared in the center of the table. He certainly loved fourtune cookies, he leaned in for one and broke it open, eating the cookie before reading his card.

"Let's play the first game."

Before Benedict could even react to a note like that, he was restrained; bound around the chest, legs and forehead. He let out a small noise of shock, covering his mouth so that no one heard him. It was all just part of the game after all.

A piece of paper appeared in front of him, he saw the intructions carefully written in ink. "Write your fears down and place them in the centerpiece. Your main fork doubles as a pen. Twist to use it. Liars and those who don't cooperate will be delivered a shocking surprise"

He certainly didn’t want to find out what that “shocking” surprise was, although he could pretty much guess.

He picked up the fork and twisted it, well there was certainly a pen in there. He began writing down his fears, a little worried as to why the gamemaker wanted them.

Drowning, Spiders, Knives, Fire.

He glanced over at Jordon, shaking a little. He hoped Jordon wouldn’t try and be stubborn.

Jordon saw Benedict glance at him, the bounds around his ankles and chest made him look so delicate, so fragile. Jordon just wanted to get him and Benedict out of here now, he regretted this decision, Benedict had been right.

He tested the bounds around his legs by trying to move his leg, they were tight. He didn’t want Benedict to have to watch him get that shocking surprise, it would probably hurt him more than anything else. Actually... he didn't want to see ANYONE here get that surprise.

Jordon leaned forward and picked up the fork, twisting it to reveal the pen tip. He tapped it against his mouth as he tried to think of what he was truly scared of.

Losing Benedict, Heights, Needles.

He sighed quietly, pushing his paper towards the center of the table. His fears were pretty stupid, but the one that bugged him the most was the losing Benedict one. Why would anyone want to know his fears? This was a concern he wasn't quite sure he wanted to face. He turned his head slightly in it’s bind, seeing Dexter had written on his piece, and Benedict had finished his. They were just waiting on the girls to write their fears.

One other person, another female, came in a little late. Allison supposed that the group assembled was nearly everyone. Unless someone else was coming up the driveway, they were probably all here.

She ate her fill, and she had to admit the food was quite nice. And since she hadn’t eaten in a bit, she most certainly enjoyed.

Fortune cookies fell, and she picked up one. In her experience, fortune cookies had often given her less than desirable fortunes. She cracked it open and read the fortune to herself.

Let’s play the first game

She looked confused, and gasped as the chair strapped her in by her waist and legs. She tried to kick out, but she couldn’t. That worried her immensely.

A slip of paper came from the bottom of the table. How that even worked, Allison didn’t know.

Write your fears down and place them in the centerpiece. Your main fork doubles as a pen. Twist to use it. Liars and those who won’t cooperate will be delivered a shocking surprise.

She glanced down at her binds, and her face paled.

Cautiously, she picked up the fork and twisted it. She personally didn’t want to write her fears. But she did not want to be shocked or some such.

She bit her lip. She wasn’t ready to admit to that.

Dying painfully, confined spaces…

She really did not want to write that one fear down. She didn’t. But the fear of being punished for lying made her.

Obviously he didn’t know the first rule of being in a horror situation. Names create attachment. No names.

“I’m Allison,” announced the other girl. Well, too late now, everyone was going to introduce themselves.

A second feminine voice called out from the entryway, "Hello? Is anyone there?"

A second girl joined them shortly and the feast begin. It was delicious, Mandy couldn’t help but eat a little more than she knew she should. After all there were challenges to come, she probably didn’t want to be too full for that. That and she really didn’t need to gain any weight.

In the center of the table appeared some fortune cookies. Mandy reach forward and grabbed one, snapping it if half, "Let's play the first game."

Suddenly the chair came to life and snapped bands around her! Instructions appeared. Cautiously Mandy discarded her cookie and took up her fork-pen.

Snakes, Death, Darkness lied Mandy. She could barely admit to herself her true fear… much less tell a stranger.
