i also got a hold of the Christian Death album Only Theatre of Pain. you have any opinion on them?

never listened to Morrisey's solo stuff. i'm still exploring some of the Cure's stuff. Disintegration and Pornography click with me the most. going to give Seventeen Seconds some attention too.

so far Sisters of Mercy's Floodland is my favorite post punk album. but i'm still just getting into it.

Can't say I'm familiar with Christian Death, but I'll look into them.

I haven't got seventeen seconds myself. It's probably what I'll go for next. Have you heard the album Wish? it's probably the most accessible album, but I love it.

I think Floodland is my second favourite, behind Disintegration.

Ah I remember listening to the Cure once I forget what song but I did like it. I think I like more punk than I like to lead on but I just don't know enough artists to say so. Though one of my favorites is Goldfinger, Goldfinger - Spokesman
i know i'm going to sound pretentious for saying this, but i don't really consider stuff like this, newer Green Day, Blink 182, etc, punk. that song isn't bad, but i just don't hear that anger that makes punk for me. but i guess i'm nitpicking.
it's better than Green Day and Blink though, and they have a lot more personality to their sound.

though i consider the Descendents punk, and they're pretty close: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiltQYlNot0
i never liked their lyrics and their vocalist is sorta annoying, but Milo Goes To College is one of the catchiest punk albums ever.

i think with some more listens one of the Cure's albums might take it. they have a bit more gloom to them, as much as i like some of them i'm still waiting for them to "click" all the way if that makes sense.

ooh, yeah, wow.
Well, given the alternative vibe this thread gives off, this'll fit well enough:

Coldplay: "Paradise"

It's a bit more poppy than their previous efforts, but it's an incredible track.

The Black Keys are supposed to have a new LP out at the end of the year, really hope it is more similar to The Big Come Up & Magic Potion than their more recent efforts.

I like old Green Day, not the poppy kind of sounding 2004 reboot Green Day, and good ol' Music elitism eh? Sometimes even though I don't mean to be like that I feel that sometimes. I know punk had it's roots in the 70s guess I don't listen to enough of it or haven't come across it. It's past its prime I guess you can say? Like how psychedelic rock peaked in the late 60s and early 70s?

Ah Coldplay, I used to not like them because everyone was talking about them when they hit popularity and I was trying to be a "cool non-conformist" But I see the error of my ways and have acknowledged their awesomeness.

We have a metal thread, we have a pop thread, time for a rock thread if you ask me - which is basically for bands that don't fit the "metal" genre. So, to start things off, did anyone here in the UK go to/watch this years Reading festival? It was the last time Muse are going to play most of Origins of Symmetry!

I know i'm bringing up an old point here but i was at Readings sister festival Leeds (It's closer and i'm northern :p) and Muse were definitely the highlight of my weekend, especially with them playing the entirety of my favourite album of theirs ;) It's was just generally a great weekend though, cant say i missed anything that i wanted to see :D

You may be in luck then, they say that their next album will be more like Origins and Absolution - something that's got me really looking forward to it!

Nice! Muse is awesome I wish I saw them in concert. Speaking of concerts. Back in August I believe, I saw Sir Paul McCartney in concert in Yankee Stadium for a guy so old, he, is, godly pretty funny too. Guest appearance by Billy Joel too so I just got a two for one ticket. His singing voice hasn't been affected at all by his age.

i don't think punk is dead. it's just a lot different.

nowadays you have stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEgWBnGn-aI

which is obviously a lot different from the Ramones and such, and a lot more influenced by metal. people have been saying punk has been dead since the 80's. same with metal.

and i think a little (justified and polite) elitism is a good thing in music. it might make you look like a dick but i think it helps build taste and opinions.

I agree it would help one formulate taste and opinions on music; it would kind of be boring if you treated all music the same way. Though I refrain myself from giving an example because
1. I probably don't know enough about music
2. I'm afraid to offend someone in their taste of music.
But as long as its not "Yo, Weezer is the greatest band of all time every other band sucks, only Weezer is true music"; and you should have respect other artists as well, I mean I am not a fan of rap but I'm not going say Kanye West- Is a bum who makes crap music . It's fine.

Completely agree with the last point. Ive often said people arent elitist enogh, and far too happy to accept music of lesser quality. I also feel it helps us to both understand music better, but also greater understanding of why we like what we like (though i doubt we could ever fully know that)

I heard a rumour but i didn't want to get my hopes up too much just yet - i'm still eagerly anticipating said new album though and i hope it'll be good! :) Sadly i can't afford to go to Leeds again next year though, breaking my three years in a row tradition :( Oh well, i'll just have to hope the line up isn't so great

Your argument is invalid. It is against the rules to post in threads over a month old.

:D

Anyway, I listen to A LOT of rock. AFI, Hawthorne Heights, HIM... I listen to the old stuff too, don't worry. Just not as much, because those bands won't have new material anytime soon.

It's just garage rock with boring lyrics and (usually) lesser musical talent.
this is clearly the exact same thing as garage rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnCyWEjj0aA

punk is not just the Ramones or the Sex Pistols anymore. **** you if you think so. there's tons of branches on it. also how does it make sense to dismiss an entire genre about lyrics? if you're going to give me that "i don't like political lyrics" point too punk has never ALL had political lyrics.

it's fine to not like it, but the reasons you listed are dumb. the musical talent one is a fair thing to say but it's still not very valid.

It's ridiculous to argue that the roots of punk are not founded in garage rock. Yes it's spread and made its boring way into other genres, but the roots remain.

I find lyrics to be vitally important if the music is stripped to its bare bones. Punk lyrics are boring and formulaic. I'd rather read a Stephanie Meyer novel. I love political lyrics when done well. Punk does not do this.

Ces, yes, 95% + of music is worthless.

yes, you're right, but that doesn't mean anything considering there's tons of punk that's completely different from that nowadays. it doesn't matter if it has roots in garage rock, because a lot of bands have absolutely no resemblance to it.

not all punk has political lyrics. even as early as the ****ing Misfits, punk had lyrics that weren't political.

but i understand why you wouldn't like punk if lyrics mean that much to you. i don't really understand that point of view where lyrics mean all that much, but whatever.
