One year ago, after the Rising Volt Tacklers disbanded, Roy continues his travels with Captain Pikachu and arrives at Lumiose City in the Kalos region. When there, he meets a local boy named Ult and his Sableye. While there, he learns about a mysterious Lucario...

The episode starts in present day, they're all on the airship.

Roy/Ult do a brief training battle (the Mega Evolution sequence lasted longer than the actual battle lol) while Liko and Dot are watching, and then after the battle Liko asks Roy about how he met Lucario. This is the beginning of the flashback.

EDIT: Roy just confirmed Pikachu isn't his Pokemon, lol.

EDIT #2: Tutorial on how Mega Evolution works, saying you need the stone/key stone/strong bond.

EDIT #3: Is that Everstone that Crocalor is holding? Maybe not

Okay start to the Kalos mini-arc though the Lucario bit may ironically be the weakest part of the episode since it all feels rushed. Not a good start for the jackal who I haven't been too fond of. Mayonnaise is such a fun character to have around, wouldn't mind seeing him again in the present day.

Good to see Liko and Dot appear at the start so this isn't a nearly Liko/Dot free month after all and not only the ever cute Cap sneezing gag again but also confirmation that Roy's only taking care of him.

Also Crocalor's holding an Everstone? R.I.P. to it becoming a Skeledirge? Unless he drops it by accident or it just magically disappears?

Welp, that was as basic as I thought and also started exactly as I thought it would, with Liko and Dot asking about mega evolution and Lucario.

Cracking up at the opening being a slide show of photos lol.

Maybe it's a similar story to Ash Boldore which didn't evolve since Gigalith was hard to animate... Skeliderge design is quite complex...

Notable improvements across the board in animation and storyboarding. The camera pans to Crocalor and Sableye in the first battle were simple but effective.

Roy and Ult's dynamic worked immediately and served as great setup for both the remainder of the arc and the present day

Isn't that just a regular stone? Crocalor was searching for its mega stone since Sableye had already found his.

This was lowkey a boring episode. I wasn't expecting Roy and Uruto to get key rings that easily

I dunno, you tell me. The fact that the camera zoomed in on the stone and the fact that it pretty much resembles Everstone makes me feel it's not just a random stone.

I'm sure we'll see it evolve eventually. Maybe when the stone is removed from it.

Fun fact: this is the first time we've seen Amnesia in the anime since season 1, where it was also used by a Slowbro.
