Saffron High

“Chris…are you sure you want to go tomorrow?”
“Dad, for the last time, yes.” I replied, giving him a toothy grin.
“You know, you could go to an average high school, graduate, and work at Silph with me, that would be completely acceptable” he replied, with a touch of sarcasm.
We both laughed, cause we both know how much he hated the 9-5.
“But seriously Chris, don’t feel like you have to do this because…”
“What…mom?” I replied curiously.
“Yes… your mother, I understand if you’re doing this to try to get out of her shadow but…”
“Okay fine, I am… I’m the kid who had a Mr. Mime as a butler, and a Jynx as a nurse… the kid who nobody takes seriously… cause his mom’s… a…a” I hesitated cause I hated saying it, “a gym leader”.
We talked for a little longer that night, mainly about my first day of school, and what I should expect. I had already flipped through the brochure a thousand times, but all I could think about was what pokemon I’d be getting on my first day of school.
After a while, I said goodnight to my dad, and headed upstairs. I turned on my t.v. and flipped to the news channel. All they covered was the pokemon league, but I was bored with it. I had watched battles since before I could remember. This year’s finals weren’t anything spectacular, just some guys from Pallet fighting each other. I turned off the t.v., laid back, and drifted off to sleep.
I woke up to my dad knocking on the door. “Hey buddy, guess who’s here to see ya?”
“Tell the challenger’s that I haven’t opened a gym, I don’t plan on opening one, and that they should go see my mom for that crap” I sarcastically replied.
“You mean… see me?” her voice drifted slowly into the room, jolting me awake.
“MOM!!!” I yelled out, leaping from my bed, and bounding out the doorway, right into her outstretched arms, “How did you ever find time…”
“Don’t be ridiculous, my son’s first day at Saffron high, I wouldn’t miss it for the world”
I hugged her tighter, “and the Pokemon League just finished, so I won’t be getting challengers for awhile…” she added on, giving me a wry smile.
We both laughed, and then headed downstairs. Jynx was busy making some pancakes, and Mr. Mime was cleaning up the room furiously, something that he didn’t usually do, but since mom was home, well, you get the picture. Me and my parents chatted away as we stuffed the fluffy pancakes into our mouths. Dad chatted away about new pokemon technologies, while mom discussed remodeling the gym with a more contemporary flair. I just let their word fly right over my head. I was gonna be a pokemon trainer today, nothing they said even mattered.
Before I knew it, it was time to go, dad had to go to work early for a meeting, so mom said she’d take me. Dad told me he really wished he could go, but I cut him off, saying it was no big deal. He chuckled and told me he’d have something special for me when I got back. I couldn’t help wondering what it was…but before I could play the guessing game, my dad had headed out the door. I grabbed my backpack off the floor, wiped some syrup off my jeans, adjusted my belt, and headed out with mom.
