Salac, Petaya, and such

in the trainer towers in fire red/leaf green/emerald, I've noticed that some of the pokemon in there are sometimes holding salac, petaya, etc
can you steal the berries away from them using thief?

i've tried theif in the FR/LG trainer tower and i didn't get anything...so theif doesn't work in the trainer tower

Yep, like everyone said, it goes back to the Pokemon from the place after the battle's over.
