This is the sequel to Scourge of the Skies, in case you didn't catch that from the title. If you weren't involved in the first installment, fear not, for very little knowledge of the original is required to partake in this RPG. The only information that is necessary can be found below. Now, without further ado, I present to you: Scourge of the Skies 2! Fellow RPers, join me in the skies!
From the diary of Jill Tempest, daughter of the late Captain Timothy Tempest:
From the diary of Jill Tempest, daughter of the late Captain Timothy Tempest:
Seven years have passed since the defeat of the Aristocrats, and sky pirates have been free to soar the skies as much as they please. Sky piracy rates have rocketed, due to the lack of a firm military. The world, once thought free, has, in reality, only been thrown into chaos. Sky pirates rule the world by force, raiding cities and towns across the globe, and killing each other for plunder. Innocent citizens are caught in the cross-fire, and countless lives have been lost.
The skies above have lit up with explosions of aerial battles. Fire reigns down from above, engulfing the land below. The sky is the battlefield, the pirates are the combatants, the people of the land are the victims. Our world has been plunged into chaos. Perhaps a chaos even worse than before. Many believe that Armageddon has come upon them at last.
But all is not lost.
Up in what used to be northern France, there is a tavern called "Tempest Tavern" that houses refugees from pirate attacks. No sky pirate in his right mind would ever set foot in the tavern, for rumor has it that it's guarded by a crew of hellish sky pirates, perhaps some of the most notorious sky pirates ever. And they don't raid cities; they specialize in taking down other pirates. And they're the best in the business.
They are the Sky Pirates of the Phoenix. Captained by a master mechanic named Walter "Mechs" Haley, rumored to have built the Phoenix himself, the legendary pirate crew defends nearby cities and towns, and plunders enemy ships like taking candy from a baby. Their ship, easily one of the most powerful in the world, could take down an opposing ship within an hour, possibly even in mere minutes.
But soon just defending towns and plundering other pirates won't be enough to suppress the approaching winds. An ominous storm is on its way, and something earth-shaking and sky-splitting is about to happen.
The Sky Pirate War is about to begin.
This is where you come in. As a crewman of the Phoenix, you will take part in soaring the skies, plundering enemy sky pirates, and trying to stop the biggest war in history from occurring. Allow me to explain some things:
1. Being sky pirates, we travel by air, not by sea. The Phoenix is the name of our ship, named by its original captain, Timothy Tempest, after "rising from the ashes." Armed with one hundred cannons, fifty on each side, and four massive double cannons, two in front and two in back, the Phoenix strikes an imposing figure, especially when in direct sunlight, as the light grants it a fiery orange tint.
2. The parts of our airship are essentially referred to by the same names as a typical ship. Allow me to impart some knowledge on these terms:
Aft – the back of the airship
Bow – the front of the airship
Forecastle – the crew’s quarters, located in the front of the airship
Hull – the body of the airship
Poop Deck – the rearmost deck of the airship
Port – left; if you are facing forward
Portwing – the left wing of the airship
Quarterdeck – the area where the airship’s controls are located (for normal ships this is in the back, but for airships, it is in the front)
Starboard – right; if you are facing forward
Starboardwing – the right wing of the airship
Stern – the back of the airship
The Watch – a four-hour period when a crewman is on duty
Now, don't get the wrong idea. This is in no way a typical ship. When picturing the Phoenix, think of one of the massive airships from Final Fantasy. That should give you an idea...sort of.
3. As we all know (or should know), a ship of any kind cannot move on its own. It requires a crew. Crewmembers can be from nearly any background and any ethnicity, but all have a specific job to maintain.
Airship duties (possible classes):
Captain* (the leading figure of the airship; needs to have a very loud voice for barking orders [he's still working on that]) – Walter "Mechs" Haley (Hotshot)

Swordsman(men)* (wields one or more swords; swords of almost any kind are allowed; don't worry, they can use guns too...they just don't do as well with them; CLOSED!) - Temperance "Temper" McClymont (Food Guy); Ross G. Burr (Possk); Daniel "Twigs" Clowes (Pokefan0234)
Deckhand(s) (keeps the ship up and running; refueling, etc.; can wield swords, guns, and the like; ONE SPOT OPEN!) – Leonardo "Lee" Steeldirge (ShadoWolfDemon); Mordecai Heller (Possk); Lance Donovan (Kamotz)
Cannoneer(s) (essentially, ‘powder monkeys’; they fire the cannons; TWO SPOTS OPEN!) – Grigori Shostakovich (Hotshot)

RETURN OF THE PHOENIX

From the diary of Jill Tempest, daughter of the late Captain Timothy Tempest:
August 17, 2283 A.D.
Last night, our sky pirate alliance launched its final blow to the aristocrats. The airships, the Ali Baba, the Divine Wind, and the Phoenix took flight with over a dozen other ships forming their small fleet. Led by my father, Captain Timothy Tempest, the Scourge of the Skies, we lit up the night sky with our rain of terror. But, because of my father's traitorous first mate, that aristocrat hog, Rephasul, caught wind of our plans. He summoned every last bit of power he had left to wipe us out. When we reached his castle, we found ourselves staring straight into the gullet of an enormous beast; the aristocrats' entire military force.
Their ships filled the sky, hovering before us, taunting and beckoning us to draw near. And draw near we did. They didn't underestimate us. All of their power was focused on one ship: the Phoenix. They knew that Tempest was aboard...but sometimes even the greatest of minds are wrong. It was thanks to the quick-thinking of our ship's strategist, Jayden Darkhart, that we were able to get inside the castle. My father stormed the castle on foot, with only a handful of his crewmen with him, while the airships battled above. With him were Jay Darkhart, Roger Fiend, Gale Legato, Brooke Sangloup, Jase Kongo, and Walter "Mechs" Haley. Their mission was, so I've been told, to plant remote-controlled bombs inside of the castle...to send Rephasul hurtling into hell in a ball of fire.
Meanwhile, in the skies, the Phoenix and the other ships held their own against the military. But Captain Arima's ship, the Divine Wind, was severely damaged. The legendary Japanese pirate knew he wouldn't last any longer, so he hurled his ship into the side of the Magellan, taking out both the pirate ship and the military ship. The power of the Divine Wind was sorely missed by us for the rest of the battle, but we held together. Kassim, captain of the Ali Baba, tag-teamed with our ship's pilot, Jasper, a mechanic who greatly assisted us in the building of the Phoenix. Together, the two ships dealt massive damage to the enemy, depleting its forces by half within an hour.
My father and his team spent a long time in Rephasul's castle, and we were growing worried...that perhaps something had happened to them. But all was going as planned. Just an hour ago, Mechs told me exactly what went on, describing it to the best of his ability.
When they reached Rephasul's room, they stormed in and found him alone, which was surprising. Mechs guesses that he assumed the full brunt of the military would be enough to stop my father. But as we all know, nothing can stop Captain Tempest. As my father and his crewmen entered the room, Rephasul pulled a pistol off his belt and fired at Tempest. But one shot wasn't enough to take my father down. He took a firm step forward, slowly approaching Rephasul.
"The devil sent me back, Rephasul. He said I couldn't come empty-handed. I had to take someone with me."
Rephasul stumbled back a step and fired again. Still, Tempest approached.
"Your time is up, Aristocrat Pig. The world is no longer yours! The Sky Pirate Era has begun!"
Another shot rang out. Tempest was bleeding severely in three places. Mechs and the others tried to help, but the captain waved them away. Then he turned that terrible gaze of his back on Rephasul. The aristocrat fired another shot. Four bullet wounds in Tempest's torso. But the great man stomped forward still.
"Tonight is the night every soul on Earth will remember as the night that Captain Timothy Tempest, Scourge of the Skies, an' the crew o' the Phoenix, freed the world from your clutches! Join me in a drink, Rephasul. It'll be your last."
My father reached for a glass and a bottle of wine on Rephasul's table. Filling the glass, Captain Timothy Tempest elegantly raised it high and said, "A toast to Lord Rephasul, and his foolishness in believin' he could ever rule the Earth when sky pirates roamed the skies! To Lord Rephasul!"
Enraged, Rephasul fired a fifth shot at Tempest. My father, his torso bleeding terribly, downed his glass and let it fall to the floor. Reaching forward, he grabbed hold of Rephasul, shouting for Mechs and the others to fall back. As the others hurried out of the castle, suddenly understanding what Tempest planned to do, Mechs remained.
Tears streaming down his face, Mechs recalled an incident very similar to this one. "Cap'n Tempest...come on, we gotta go!"
My father, grinning, turned to him and said, "Aye, Mechs...it's time for you to go."
Mechs just stared at Tempest, too choked up to utter a word. Tempest, grasping Rephasul tighter than ever, so as not to let the fat hog escape, smiled and closed his eyes. "Mechs...the world's as it should be...and, as promised, I give you my permission to--" (Mechs paused there and didn't tell me what exactly my father gave him permission to do)
Mechs wiped his tears away with his bloody, sweaty sleeve. Smiling weakly, he said, "Aye, Cap'n. Thank you...for everything."
Tempest chuckled to himself and called out, over Rephasul's exasperated screams, "Now, go, Mechs. GO! Yer holdin' up me big finale!"
When Mechs and the others evacuated the castle, we all heard my father's signature booming laughter, and then the entire castle exploded in a pillar of fire. Even over the roar of the explosion, we could all hear clearly the thunderous laughter of Captain Timothy Tempest echoing across the sky.
The world was free.
From the diary of Jill Tempest, daughter of the late Captain Timothy Tempest:
October 1, 2283 A.D.
As I was staring out over the horizon on the Phoenix early this morning, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me. I turned around and there stood the Phoenix's new captain, Captain Walter Haley. He stood there fidgeting for a moment, before finally speaking, "Hey, uh, Jill...since you kind of volunteered me to be captain, could I ask you a question?"
I stared at him for a second, and then laughed. "Sure, anything, Mechs--I mean, Cap'n."
"'Mechs' is fine," he replied, taking a step closer and joining me. "Anyway, if I'm going to be captain, I'll need a second-in-command...and I was wondering if, well, if you'd like to be my first mate?"
I was ecstatic. I literally jumped up and down (a thing I never do). I could hardly speak I was so excited. I just sort of squealed like a little schoolgirl.
Mechs' grin widened to extreme proportions. I don't think I've ever seen him smile that big. "So is that a 'yes', then?"
"Yes, Mechs, yes!" I answered. "Whatever the question, my answer will always be 'yes'!"
Then Mechs did something completely unexpected. To my surprise, he dropped to one knee, took my right hand in both of his, and said, "Then, Jill Tempest, I have another question to ask you..."
And the rest is history.

Name: Walter “Mechs” Haley
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Airship position: Captain/Mechanic
Description: Captain Haley has always been naturally thin, though he's grown much more muscular over the past few years. Still, he strikes a much less intimidating figure than Captain Tempest did. Mechs is not tall, nor is he short. He's exactly five-foot-eleven-and-a-half, and he is quite irritated with that fact. He has high cheekbones, a well-developed chin, and thin lips. A scruffy goatee can be found on his chin, and he is quite proud of it, often stroking it thoughtfully. The reason behind this is that many years ago, the other sky pirates thought him to be incapable of growing facial hair. His skin is fairly tanned, but it often looks darker due to his hair. His hair, a silver color due to premature greying, is long and unkempt. His bangs have been cut shorter so that they no longer hang in his eyes, but instead rest over his forehead in several spikes. His sideburns frame the sides of his face, stretching down past his ears. The rest of his 'do is tied in a ponytail that hangs down his back, ending just below his shoulder-blades. His bright green eyes are both intelligent and inquisitive, always seeking knowledge and adventure. His eyebrows have thickened a fair deal since he was younger, but would still be considered to be thin.
The garb of this infamous pirate captain is not the norm. Most captains of his standing decorate themselves with fabulous jewels, expensive coats and robes, and perhaps very large, frilly hats. But Mechs wears none of that. Instead he dresses as an average sky pirate might dress. A white collared shirt, kept unbuttoned at the top, covers his torso, and over that he wears an unbuttoned crimson-colored vest. The sleeves of his white shirt are stuffed into a pair of brown gloves that he usually wears (primarily because he's almost always tinkering with something or other, due to his fascination with mechanics). On the lower half of his body he wears a pair of dirty, brown breeches. Like his shirt-sleeves, Mechs stuffs the ends of his pants-legs into his large combat boots. A crimson sash can usually be found tied hastily around his waist. A single earring dons his left ear. Hanging on his sash is a sword-sheath, where he keeps his close-range weapon, and on the other side one can find a holster for a pistol. His favorite wrench rests in a pouch on the back of his sash, completing his attire.
Personality: Over the past few years, Mechs has become much more like Captain Tempest. He is adventurous and fun-loving, but at the same time, smart and observant. Mechs is fascinated with machinery and weapons, and has a fancy for airships. Having been in charge of the building of the Phoenix, he knows it almost perfectly inside and out, backwards and forwards, and could probably even build another one, if he had in his possession the right parts and manpower. He probably wouldn't, but he could. Perhaps one of the only thing he loves more than mechanics is his family and crew (who he considers to be part of his family). He loves his wife, Jill, and his daughter, Tiffany, with all his heart, and would do anything for them. And he would do the same for his crewmates as well. He is compassionate, and most definitely not as imposing as Tempest.
Adventure is one of his passions. He loves soaring the skies at the airship's wheel, just flying over the earth below. One of his mottos is "If you want to discover new lands, be prepared to leave the ground." He is quite outgoing, and knows every member of the Phoenix at least by name. Many of his crew are good friends of his, and have been with him on countless adventures. Despite being the captain, he is always ready and willing to learn something new. He's been taught many things by his crewmen over the years. Jill taught him how to sword-fight (in which he has nearly surpassed her), Gale instructed him in firing a gun accurately, and Lee taught him hand-to-hand combat. Doctor Deckard gave him very useful advice for first-aid, and Layla tried to teach him how to cook (unsuccessfully, I might add). His head-strategist, Nick Gadit, has taught him much about battle-strategy and even inventing new things. And, of course, Mechs has been able to impart some of his own knowledge (mostly of machinery and mechanics) to some of his crewmen.
History: Walter Haley grew up in an average family, and by average, I mean, incredibly poor. As he was growing up, his mother told him stories of the sky pirates, a group of free men and women who traveled the world and enjoyed every bit of their freedom in the skies. They soared on the winds and plundered the aristocrats, leaving without a scratch. Inspired by these stories, Mechs would often sneak out after dark and gaze up at the stars for most of the night, wishing upon every falling star he came across. All of the oppressed considered the sky pirates to be heroes, and Walter was no exception. He longed to be free like a bird, soaring through the air, being able to go wherever he pleased, do whatever he pleased. He longed to be free.
Then, that fateful day came. A short while after his sixteenth birthday, his father (who had to work tirelessly) became ill, and his mother sent him into town to find some medicine. After an exhausting three-hour walk into town, the young lad found that the townspeople had all retreated into their homes. He wondered why, but soon came across his answer. They had arrived. The dreaded sky pirate, Captain Tempest, and his crew of the fearsome Behemoth, had decided to stay in town for the night. Walter stared in awe at the massive figures that stood before him, waiting for their captain to settle a deal with a nearby vendor.
Walter’s eyes crept past the bulky sky pirates, and rested on a girl, perhaps a year younger than himself, of unsurpassed beauty. She was a sky pirate? Surely not. But then again, his mother had clearly stated ‘a group of free men and women’. The teenage boy sighed. There was no way he could abandon his father and mother. He had to put off his dream until another time. Clutching the newly-acquired medicine, he set out for home.
A week passed, and his father had reached a near-recovery. The time for sowing the seed in the field his father worked had come. Walter’s father was unable to work as well as he could before, for he was still recovering, so Walter spent day after day, night after night, in the fields. For three days he worked almost nonstop, pausing only for a couple of hours of sleep every night and times to eat a small dinner. On the last day, when all the work was accomplished, he went out to gather wood for their fire, for the nights were cold in that area. It was there, among the trees, lay the gigantic airship: the Behemoth. Standing around it were most of the ship’s crewmen, all grumbling and cursing. With no mechanic, they had no way of fixing their ship’s broken engine. The sky pirates had been grounded.
The boy understood the problem almost immediately. He had always had a thing for machinery. Stepping out among them, Walter offered his help. After a moment or two of eyeing the newcomer suspiciously, Captain Tempest accepted. Despite his lack of previous mechanical experience and having worked three days nonstop, Walter fixed the problem with ease. Amazed by the boy’s natural talent, Tempest asked him to join their cause: to defeat the Aristocrats and claim all of their riches. Walter thought it over. Now was his chance, his chance to be free. But then again, his parents needed him. Just as he was about to decline, the girl from a week and a half before appeared, and urged him to join. Now, Walter was no idiot. He knew that when a pretty girl asked you to join, you always joined. So he excused himself for a moment, went back to the field, and etched into the dirt:
Mom, Dad, do not worry for me. I am free now.
Your son, Walter
That said, Walter Haley, dubbed “Mechs” by the sky pirates, became a crewmember of the Behemoth. Ten years have passed since then, and he's had countless trials, adventures, and fun times with the crewmen of the Behemoth, and later, after the destruction of the former, the Phoenix. When the Aristocrats were defeated and Captain Tempest passed on, the position of captain was thrust into his hands, as both the previous captain and his daughter, Jill, had taken a liking to the young mechanic. After much persuasion, Mechs consented, and ended up becoming a far stronger man than ever before. Shortly after becoming captain, Mechs proposed to Jill Tempest, and the two of them were wed.
When sky piracy got out of hand, they started Tempest Tavern, a place of refuge for innocents affected by the notorious deeds of sky pirates. Appalled by the level of destruction his fellow pirates were causing, Captain Haley and the crew of the Phoenix took to the skies once again in an effort to put an end to it all.
Other: Mechs often practices his "Tempest Laugh" in front of the mirror. He is certain that one of these days he'll master it.
Name: Jill Tempest
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Airship position: First Mate/Swordsman (and Mother...it's a full-time job)
Description: Jill is a woman of slim figure, but is not in any way weak. Her hands appear delicate, but, in fact, are very adept in the wielding of a sword. Jill usually wears a look of cunning somewhere on her face; whether it be in her sea blue eyes, or on her rosy lips. Her skin is a golden-tan hue, as she spent much of her childhood outdoors, “adventuring”. Jill wears a ragged black bandana on her head, covering a portion of her dark, crimson-colored hair. Her long, messy hair frames the sides of her face, and a single braid runs down to her left shoulder. The remainder of her red hair spills down her back. Before she was married, many of the male crewmembers regarded her as “a good-lookin’ lass”. But never to her face.
Jill's attire is fairly typical for a sky pirate (despite the fact that nearly half of her time is spent running the tavern). Her torso is covered (mostly) by a tight, noodle-strap shirt that's slowly coming apart at the seams. Anything else is too restricting, she claims. Her otherwise bare arms are decorated with bracelets and the like, and a tattoo of a ship's wheel can be found on her left shoulder. Several earrings can be found in each of her ears (most of them loops). Jill’s trousers are a faded green-color, and very baggy. She often rolls them up a bit past her heel, so she doesn’t trip. Around her waist one can plainly see the holster for her pistol and two sheaths- one for her legendary cutlass with a razor-sharp blade and a basket-shaped guard (hilt), and the other for long dagger. Her brown boots accommodate her feet, and are each equipped with a small knife hidden in a pouch on the side.
She always keeps a handkerchief in her back-pocket (for cleaning the blood off her sword).
Personality: Most of the time, Jill is outgoing, fun, and energetic, but she has a fiery temper. When angered, Jill will spout off insults and challenges. She takes great pride in her skill with a blade, though in reality, she is not by any means the best (though she is close). Being both the captain's wife and the first mate, all of the crewmembers know her name, have seen her on multiple occasions, and have heard her booming voice (which is much like her deceased adopted father’s was, despite the lack of blood-relation), though not very many have actually befriended her, for fear of her temper. And, of course, if something ever happened to her, the one at fault would be subject to the fury of Captain Haley.
She sees her husband, Mechs, as her best friend, and will often try to get him to do crazy things with her...every time leading them into a dangerous situation. Jill loves him, but she doesn't always show it very well (at least, not in a normal way). She's a major tomboy, and usually greets Mechs with a playful punch to the shoulder (sometimes a kiss on the cheek, but he has to be really lucky for that). Jill loves her daughter, Tiffany Haley, with all her heart, and does anything she can to make sure her daughter enjoys the freedom in life.
Jill is adventurous, to the point of being reckless. Her commonsense isn't the best, but her instinct in battle is unmatched by nearly all. She has a no-mercy battle tactic, and will almost never leave an enemy alive.
History: Jill’s history is a shrouded one, to be sure. Until the final battle with Rephasul, all she could remember was that one day she woke up, and was all alone, hidden among the bushes. Slowly, bits and pieces of her memory returned, and she recalled running through the forest with her mother, in order flee some unseen attackers. Her mother had not told her why they were running, or from whom. Eventually, they reached a point of refuge, where they could hide among the brush, but Jill’s mother wouldn’t. She left Jill there, and ran in a different direction, hoping to lead the attackers away from her daughter.
The next morning, when Jill awoke, she found herself in that same forest. Nervously, she stumbled through the woods, searching for her mother.
Finally, just when it seemed that all hope was lost, she found her. And then, all hope shattered, for what remained of her mother was but a mere corpse, hacked and slashed, and left to rot. Unable to handle it, the twelve-year-old girl dropped to her knees and threw up, all the while sobbing. It was then that she felt a strong hand rest sympathetically on her shoulder. She couldn’t explain it, but it...comforted her. She turned and looked up at the owner of the strong hand: Timothy Tempest. Her eyes drifted down to his robotic arm and leg, and she realized that he had suffered too. A tear formed in the man’s eye, and he extended his hand to her. She grasped it in both of hers, and she followed him.
She never left his side. She was with him when he formed the Behemoth crew, and took it upon herself to help lead the crew. Despite her young age, the first crewmembers came to accept her as their fellow pirate, due to her passion for pirating and her courageous heart. Jack Bonny, the first-mate aboard the Behemoth, was like an uncle to her. He taught her how to swordfight, and she even bested him a couple of times (two out of twenty or so). When they came to a small town a couple of years ago, they met up with a young man by the name of Walter Haley. She saw the fire of adventure within him almost immediately, and urged him to join their cause. Of course, Walter accepted, and the two became very close friends.
Jill was crushed when her father died in the battle against Rephasul. She broke down and cried for hours, even though she knew why he had done it. With Mechs comforting her, she finally came to accept that it was for the best, and decided that Mechs, of all people, should be the new captain. Less than two months later, Mechs requested her hand in marriage, and she couldn't speak for several minutes. Instead she fell into his arms, so overwhelmed by the realization that he loved her and that she loved him. Finally, she calmed down and whispered "Yes" in his ear.
Now, whenever she isn't on-board the Phoenix, at the captain's side, she is in Tempest Tavern, running the place and taking care of her daughter, Tiffany.
Other: Jill would rather fight by sword than by gun, so she doesn’t always carry her pistol around.

Name: Grigori Shostakovich
Gender: Male
Age: 31
Airship Position: Cannoneer/Deckhand
Description: Grigori is a well-built man of about 6'1" with a solid jaw, firm chin, and broad shoulders. He is muscular, but not gruesomely so, weighing in at about one-hundred-ninety pounds. The man's skin is lightly tanned, but not quite as tan as many of his fellow crewmen. His bushy eyebrows jut several centimeters over his eyes, which are black. The hair on his head is jet-black and cut very short, almost like a sailor-buzz. His nose is pointed and slightly disfigured after being broken twice. A thick, black mustache can be found just beneath his nose.
Grigori's garb consists of a dark gray coat that stretches nearly to his knees, and a pair of khaki breeches stuffed into black combat boots. A black belt with a brass buckle is tied around his waist, and six brass buttons can be found on his coat. He wears big, black, leather gloves on his hands. Underneath his large coat his torso is covered by a white muscle shirt and suspenders that connect to his breeches. His pockets and the pouches on his belt are filled with explosives of every kind; grenades, flash grenades, smoke bombs, trip bombs, small sticks of dynamite, and pretty much anything else that goes "BOOM!". He has a special holster at his side that looks like a pistol holster, but in fact only carries boxes of matches.
Personality: Grigori is a man of many words; many words in a very strong Russian accent. He likes to talk, and talk he does. He could sit with you for hours talking about life in "Mother Russia", despite the fact that he's never lived there. The population of Russia was mostly wiped out when the aristocrats took over, and his family fled before he was born...so in reality he knows nothing of Russia. But he likes to tell stories about it.
Being an average cannoneer on board the Phoenix (and the ship's self-proclaimed explosives-expert), he spends a lot of time with lower-ranked members of the crew. He rather enjoys talking with Marcy Wisenowski, particularly when the young mechanic is busily working on something important. And others too, for he always seems to want to tell a story at the wrong time. It's not that he's trying to bug you; he's just oblivious most of the time.
Another big part of his personality is that he can be a bit of a chicken at times, particularly if a plan of his fails. For instance, if the Phoenix has been boarded, and his first plan of retaliation falls through, he'll usually go hide. That is, unless there's a way for him to incorporate some explosions into the battle without damaging the Phoenix. He's a bit obsessed with explosions. Captain Haley has recognized this, and will sometimes sacrifice the loss of cannon-power when in battle, so that he can send Grigori to destroy an enemy airship from the inside.
History: Grigori's family fled Russia before he was born, when the war (which the aristocrats won) first broke out. They had been fairly wealthy, for his grandfather had owned many different successful farms, but all of these were destroyed in the war. They lived as refugees for a time, and shortly after Grigori was born. Being the youngest of four children, and the only boy, Grigori was very spoiled. He was offered everything they had to give him, but he always turned them down. The only things he wanted were stories of his homeland.
At the age of ten, he gained a passion for explosives. He started with small fireworks, and then went to creating his own, customizing them himself. He was soon crafting fireworks and selling them to make a living as a teenager. His mother and sisters could do very little work outside the home, and his father was always busy working in the fields. For many years they lived this way, until one day, when Grigori was twenty-four, they learned that Lord Rephasul had been defeated.
Now, this didn't mean much to them, for they had been in a largely-untouched area for quite some time...but just the fact that the aristocrats had been defeated caught Grigori's attention. He was a grown man, and fully capable of living on his own. So one day he set out to meet these legendary people who saved the world, just out of curiosity. It took him a year to finally find them, during which he wrote to his family nearly every week. When he finally found them it was entirely by accident. He was quite close to Tempest Tavern, but he had stumbled upon a small town and was asking around about the sky pirates who, he'd been told, lived nearby. Just then, an explosion rocked the town, and Grigori stumbled outside to see a horde of sky pirate raiders making their way into nearby buildings, burning, stealing, and killing.
It was then that he saw it. The Phoenix soared overhead and landed not far off. Then, with a loud battle-cry, the crew thundered into battle, knifing through enemy sky pirates like warm butter. When Grigori saw that the raiders were beginning to flee, he quickly followed them onto their ship and planted several of his fireworks on the inside, which he set off before they could take to the skies. Captain Haley and many of the Phoenix's crewmen were quite intrigued by this interesting new character they'd stumbled upon. Especially when he greeted them (in his heavy Russian accent) with, "Hello. No need to worry. I blow them up good. They all go 'boom!'"
Other: Grigori still writes to his family nearly every week, but, due to the Phoenix's constant travels, he can't always mail the letters when he finishes them. At times he has several letters stacked up in his room, waiting to be delivered.

So what're ya waitin' for? Buckle yer swash an' take to the skies!
